That's a great price. If I didn't already have an ultimate I'd be all over this.

  • +11

    $284 for a remote?!?

I nearly choked on my weetbix.

Edit - I wonder if this could control my heap of junk "r-box android t.v." that I regrettably purchased in a recent deal.

    • +5

It's a major time/effort saver if you consume a lot of entertainment and have a few devices but probably no point if you only have a Smart TV and use that for everything.

Once you own a Harmony remote, you never want to go back.

Edit: It also has the ability to learn from your current remote, so it basically supports anything IR.

      • +2

I've used harmonys for years - activity settings makes it so easy for the wife/kids to watch something without having to fiddle with a million remotes.

    • +2

      same here. amazingly expensive

    • Must have brought mine the same deal :(. I recently purchased the Harmon 650 and while I couldn't find the rbox in the database I used the learning feature and remapped the bottom half of the remote for the rbox, it still has some bugs but is much better then the standard remote that needs to be right next to the bloody thing to register key presses

    • Most likely. I picked up a Harmony Ultimate for $60 during the DSE demise, and ended up setting it up as a Bluetooth controller with my U-Box android box. Unfortunately the bluetooth side of it isn't as customisable as I'd like (as in, at all, no custom keys), but it is enough to control Kodi no probs and get around the android interface..

At $284 though, I don't know.. (though the layout is much better on this remote)

The hub is the real winner in these, no line of sight needed from the remote, no missed commands, plus Bluetooth control.

Depends on your setup as to how much value you will get out of it. I think they are incredible devices, but I have about seven or eight things plugged into an AV Receiver (which has a horrid control).

Works really really well in my case, and I'm looking to get some Philip Hues in the future so this will also be able to control those. Note I don't own this particular model but rather two previous gen products (Smart Hub and the Touch Remote), which combined basically equaled the Ultimate unit.

If you can find it cheap, the Smart Hub is probably the best buy and I believe has gone for under $100, but even at a more common $150 isn't bad. The basic remote that ships with is terrific and supports up to 6 different activities, which I assume is enough for most. Despite having a remote with a touch screen, we find the basic remote quicker and ultimately better for the simple tasks we are looking to accomplish (essentially power on and change volume). The battery also lasts months in the basic unit.

  • I have the Ultimate (older version) and these things are amazing.

Just a word of warning for PS4 users - this remove barely works with it. You'll be able to navigate the home screen and it'll turn the PS4 off. But it wont be able to turn it on and if you go into an app (for example Netflix) I stops working - basically you will still need to use the controller if you have a PS4. Works with my PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, AppleTV etc.

    • I discovered this also recently, I'm working on trying to get a node.js script going called PS4-Waker to work around it. Poor form from Sony though!

    • hmm, that's a pain. You'd think that they could integrate the function buttons from a ps4 controller with no worries?

      • I have no idea why Sony doesn't have remote functionality for the PS4. They don't even sell a remote.

        • Yeah, it's very frustrating, a 3rd party has a licensed remote so why cant Logitech get the same ability!?

    • Wait, wait, wait. This remote DOES turn the PS4 off? That's basically the only function that is missing if you use HDMI-CEC to control your PS4 (VieraLink etc). Right now I use an older Harmony and via HDMI it can turn on and navigate the PS4, but can't turn it off.

So doesn't that mean that with this thing plus HDMI-CEC, you could control everything?

Sony's attitude to remote control support is insane. They could literally have put a $2 IR port on the PS4 and saved everyone a lot of trouble, but they are obsessed with bluetooth and the "PS button" that no other device in the universe uses.

      • +1

It certainly does turn off the PS4. Can confirm.

I am feeling internal disharmony when I see the price of this remote.
Then I click on the link to see the product photos bathed in an odd background colour and I feel more disharmony.

Then I am reminded of being in Officeworks recently and seeing some new Logitech keyboards (with new Logitech logo). Anyway, that packaging had the same colour scheme: the product photo then the whole rest of the packaging bathed in this same background colour. I shook my head at how cheap it all looked. Feeling disharmony.

Then I wonder what is going with Logitech marketing and branding.

  • Not a bad deal.
Kinda tempted to go this was for an Logitech Harmony Ultimate One. Works out to be $141.60 using CTEC20

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Logitech-Harmony-Ultimate-One-Tou…

    • Yeah, that's also decent, no hub or RF control though :(

    • There is no Hub. This is a useful bit of kit as it actually is the device which sends the commands. That way you can use the remote or the Hub. It also pushes updates to your remote so you don't need to connect it to a computer.

      • If your devices were not blocked by cabinets, and you didn't mind plugging in the remote to a PC for updates are there any other disadvantages im missing ?

        • Screen resolution and awkward play/ff/rw button positioning.

Edit: If you want a fairly basic Universal remote with a screen, go for the 650.

        • @XeKToReX:
Yeah that's the one i have at the moment, am looking at upgrading because i like the looks of having the favourite channels on the home screen.
          Thanks for the info

        • +1

@razzor: 650 also has favourite channels for the Watch TV activity, check out how to use them, you can even assign channel images.

        • Check but I don't think that remote has Bluetooth, which is something the hub would take care of (at least in older units). That might make it incompatible with certain devices that dont use IR/RF (PS3, Wii and possibly others).

        • @XeKToReX:

The downside to the 650 is that it's made to very low quality control standards. I have an older 700 series which is built like a tank, but my parents are onto their third 650, two have died for no discernable reason in the last year.

      • I already have a hub but with the smart remote (non-touch screen).

I can purchase logitech harmony ultimate one and add it to my hub?

        • I'd assume if it's the same hub it shouldn't be a problem. I'm not sure how compatible they are with different remotes but would assume they're fairly universal.

        • Check the Logitech site, it lists combinations that work. I combined a Smart Control (hub) and a Harmony Touch. Adding the Touch to the Smart Control also removed the 8 device limitation on the Smart Control (which may or may not still be an issue).

        • @Smigit:
Took me ages to find the page but here it is if anyone else needs it.
          https://support.myharmony.com/en-au/harmony-add-on?&utm_sour…

I have the smart control, and it appears the ultimate one is compatible with the hub I have.

The smart control is fairly basic but does the job, curious if upgrading to the touch made much difference for you?

        • +1

@so3n: The Touch hasn't really done a huge amount for me. As above, the Smart Control had an 8 device limitation (https://forums.logitech.com/t5/Harmony-Hub-Based-Remotes/Max…). With any luck thats been lifted via software updates since then, I don't know if it has but. I purchased the Touch as at the time I had 8 devices and wanted the ability to add more to my Smart Control, and as per that link adding the Touch made the max 15 devices up from 8.

Other than raising the device count, I've rarely used the Touch. While I do have a number of devices and activities, I still tend to have four or five primary activities I use and for this the basic controls fine. The fact it's as quick to use and has a longer battery life has means I've hardly ever picked up the Touch. It's in a dock by the TV, and if I need to do something more advance I'm just as likely to use the mobile phone app.

Touch wasn't a complete waste as I only paid $86 or so for it on sale, so having it unlock the ability to use more devices was nice. You may get more use out of it if you need to do things via the Logitech Remote that you can't do on the basic controller and don't want to do on your phone. The Touch Remote isn't bad, but if you are happy with the basic remote it may not offer enough to make it worth an additional purchase.

    Great price!

The Elite looks to be the best remote Logitech have ever made.

I bought a used Touch for cheap on Gumtree (same remote as the Ultimate, minus the tilt sensor and vibration feedback) and paired it with my Harmony Smart Control:

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/239650

Works well enough, and love the RF, however the positioning of the much-used play control buttons above the touch screen made it nearly impossible to use, to the point where I have reverted back to using my 525!

Can I justify an Elite lol?

    • Haha, yeah I steered clear of them because of the nav button position, what a terrible idea! I love my 650's at the moment but don't suit my current desire to automate all the things!

Anything can be justified by simply staring at an OzBargain post for long enough :P

    • 525s were great, I had a couple, but over time they got a little glitch and some buttons stopped working. On 650s now, would love the Elite, but ultimately for my use, the 650s do it all and this would just be a waste of money. I can live with destroying a 650, but not one of these.

  • what happens if you are your kid drop one of these? Whats the cost of replacement?

    • "cost of replacement?"
well, same price as the new one? ie $284? am i missing something on your question?

      • +1

Not really because you just need to buy a new remote, not a new Hub. Which makes it a bit cheaper.

    • My 950 has been dropped plenty of times and no problems at all.

      • I knocked my One of the top of the couch onto hardwood, the screen did not appreciate it one bit, cracked the LCD which became unreadable. I switched to 650s and have two with another in storage (DSE closing down great price) for the next time one gets destroyed.

    • If I was my kid? Well, I'd hope it would cost a lot to replace me.

  • +1

    Thanks Upgraded!

  • Is the quality of these new ones any better? I've had 2 previous Logitech Harmony remotes, and they fell apart pretty quickly; the touchscreen was next to useless, the grippy part started peeling, etc.

Plus the remote programming software was awful to use.

    • +1

My 2 650's have been fine except for when my gf ripped one of the buttons out accidentally :( and they've been thrown around, dropped etc for years.

You can program the remotes using the mobile app now which is much better than the PC software.

    • +1

This is the third Harmony I've had and never had any of those issues. Obviously YMMV.

The prefer the new software to the older one. It's a little more intuitive.

    • +1

Mine's been good so far - seems much more solid that the One it replaced.

The rubber stuff on my One did peel - I cleaned it all off with some of that citrus goo cleaner. I can't remember what the back of the One was like originally but I think the Elite is better.

  • +1

I have a Smart Control with Hub, that I picked up for cheap during DSE sales.
    but I really need touchscreen.
everytime a command doesn't get registered by the device, and I need to fix it, I need to get my phone, go into the app, etc.
not so good for non techie people.
Also has the same problem with the play fwd rew buttons. who the $#$# came up with that?

Is the 950, the same as the harmony elite, but without the hub?

  • +1

I decided to go the 650 for 55.20, since I have been after one for some time and they haven't been on a good sale. It's only a $5 saving over OW, but better than nothing I suppose.

  • After I set up a harmony remote, I mainly only use 2 button, 1 button to turn on projector, PC and hi-fi. 1 button to turn them all off.

so 200 is a bit pricy, I got the smart remote

  • Buy cheap phone with ir blaster.

  • Can somebody who owns one already please answer a simple question for me?

Do I absolutely have to have an Android or Apple device to set this up, or can it still be set up via a Windows computer?

    Many thanks. :)

    • +1

Windows PC with silverlight installed is fine, software is kinda crappy but it does the job fine

    • +1

For configuration I still find crappy Windows Silverlight software is easier to use compared to iOS app.

  • +2

    Thanks to you both. :)

  • Could anyone advise if the light bulb and powerpoint buttons can be configured to trigger a macro?

Assume so but not 100% sure. Hoping they are not tied to just individual smart bulbs or switches.
