How I wish I could just point a Chromecast at an SMB share. I'd buy six of them.

    • +6

The VideoStream extension for Chrome works to do exactly this.

      • +5

I only discovered VideoStream 2 weeks ago, its amazing. I picked up the JB-Hifi 43' Soniq special for $299 and it wasn't a Smart TV thought I was lost, nope winning with videostream I can stream from the PC to the Chromecast no dramas and its yet to stutter.

        • +1

Agree, I have a Soniq Dumb TV too. Thank goodness for Chromecast.

        • off the topic question, how good/bad is that Soniq as a PC monitor ? :)

        • +2

@scud70: The colors would need a lot of tweeking to get them correct on a PC. I use a soniq 48" for PS4 and the picture is markedly different than on my 55" LG as I haven't adjusted the colors. The response time of the Soniq is fine however. If you are prepared to put in the effort to calibrate it properly it would be a good pc monitor.

        • @Todes Angst: Thanks mate! was just seeing how legible say text and things like that are if it gets used as a monitor … i.e. mount it up on the wall above the desk in the study, so it can be used to watch movies and stuff by the kids or for us to use when we work from home :)

        • @scud70: regarding using TVs as monitors, I wonder if 4:4:4 Chroma is relevant to you?

          e.g., from rtings.com:

TVs and PC Monitors are very similar in function. If you however plan on using a TV as a monitor, you should look into two aspects these displays may provide: The ability to support a 1080p @ 120hz signal for vastly a superior gaming experience, or the ability to display 4k @ 60hz @ Chroma 4:4:4 which will produce clearer and sharper text. TVs that can offer both of these functions are somewhat rare…

and also a discussion on overclockers:

I'd personally go for a 4:4:4 if you can, almost all decent 1080p PC monitors will be 4:4:4 - even TN ones. 4K TVs (and possibly monitors) will sacrifice this to make it cheaper (among other things). But if you went for a 4:2:2 4K 60Hz TV with low input latency, I don't think you will be missing much - provided you don't really use that TV for color-sensitive work

      • +1

No I don't want to set up a web browser on a separate machine to connect to a media library on a share and then use the browser or my phone to control what plays. Last I checked it also worked with DNLA, which chokes on large libraries. All I want to do is play a file from a directory, not deal with streaming and browsers. Dead easy from a PC.

        • +2

So you want a network enabled device with enough local memory and CPU power to decode videos on the fly for ~$30-50? Me too!

        • -1

          @Domingo:

It's great that there's plenty of options out there, which meet the very requirement, hey.

        • +1

          @Domingo:

It can already do all of that. The Chromecast 2 has a dual core CPU and half a GB of memory.
          http://www.anandtech.com/show/9688/googles-chromecast-2-is-p…

This isn't an issue of local memory or CPU power.

        • +5

Having bought a Chromecast 2, I can confirm that all the videostream/plex addons are complete and utter waste of your time. They suck hard and are incapable of playing H265 full stop, only good if you want to play 1 file which is pointless because the Chrome browser can do this natively at 1080p with no stutter (H264). They are also incapable of easily switching between files, resuming at the last location etc, they can only do this in a highly complex/limiting manner.

Luckily, the Chromecast 2 is capable of streaming your desktop at 720p with no noticeable stutter. However, it is unbearable at 1080p. All my equipment are top of the line compared to your normal users. However, my laptop doesn't have ac, it's running on n. That might make up the difference but I doubt it because wireless n runs at 56MB/s and my video files are only 300MB for 45 minutes.

So set it up at 720p, mirror desktop and use the unified remote app. You can access all of your content with minimal effort (H265, 1080p files and all), no need to get up. It'll just play at 720p on your TV and you will have a 1 second time lag between your computer and the TV but there should be no lag unless you're moving the mouse.

        • +2

          @IndecentExposure: If you're lacking 5ghz I'd say that's the bottleneck you're encountering.

        • @Vanit: can anyone confirm that it mirrors the desktop at 1080p with no stutter? 1080p movies in mpchc/vlc? So far, everyone on the internet says it lags.

As far as I know, 5ghz is only beneficial when the 2.4ghz band is being crowded, at my place I only pick up one neighbour very faintly. All my equipment except for my laptop are fully 5ghz ac capable.

        • +1

@IndecentExposure: I regularly stream 1080p content to my Chromecast with no problems, although I'm not so sure about the desktop. It may be a moot point because the Chrome extension has been made native in the latest version of Chrome, and they removed the options to control the resolution with it instead auto-adjusting for your setup.

        • If you have an Android device, try an app like "LocalCast for Chromecast/DLNA' to allow you to cast from the SMB share to the Chromecast. Or use Plex (which requires you to set up a server).

    • +4

If you're looking to stream to a TV or something like that, you can do the same thing with a $35 Raspberry Pi and one of the Plex frontends available for it.

      • i want mirror my andriod phone sscreen, can pi do it? i do have a pi lying around…

    • +1

Nexus TV with Kodi or Raspberry Pi with Kodi.

I see no reason to use anything else.

      • can it mirror my andriod?

        • Nexus TV can natively (Chromcast built it).

Also, Kodi can do AirPlay, and there are Android apps that cast to AirPlay.

          So, yes.

      • +1

To be clear, my post above isn't the reason for me neg.

        My neg reason is below.

      • -1

cos its not more than $50?

        • -6

Android Boxes and Raspberry Pis are often under $50.

        • -5

Reason for the vote down idiots? If you're going to vote someone down, at least explain yourself.

        • +2

@PainToad: just down voted cause you got a potty mouth

        • +3

          @Rick Sanchez:

I may have a potty mouth, but at least I know how to use the shift, comma and period keys.

        • @PainToad: True, but don't you think it sounds hella cool when I write like that?

      • I agree for local media playback. Unfortunately only a select few devices are netflix HD + 5.1 certified. The android boxes / kodi boxes are not and so are limited to SD + 2.0
The chromecast at $33 is a good way to add HD + 5.1 netflix to a system IMO

    • +3

if youve got an android toy. Localcast has DLNA/UPnP & SMB support.
works a treat. Free with ads (on your toy), or upgrade to ad free

    • Localcast
maybe there are other apps out there does same or better

if you want to setup server/client
      Plex

Subscribing to a newsletter for coupon is not a deal. The expensive TV is only $25 dollar off. No deal.

      • You have done well with having some bold words in there

    • +22

Price showing as $58 for me…

voucher can only be used once per customer…

This is essentially a dupe of the voucher deal as these prices by themselves are certainly not bargains…

      • +1

        True that.

  • +2

Temporarily available? hmmm.. Sounds like they are going to jack everything up by $25 like their ebay sales??

  • +1

might be time to replace the original chromecast and this is a good excuse

  • +2

    Requires mobile phone spamming.

    • Just make up a number

      • +2

I just use the phone number of the people I hate.

        • +1

But how can you fit sooooo many phone numbers into that little bitty text field?

        • @banana365:

Multiple account, multiple voucher. Win win.

        • +4

Where did you get my number?

  • I don't know anything about the chromecast 2,but does it let you overcome the splash/login page in hotels (cc1 couldn't do it).

    • you might need a travel router to interface the hotels wifi and the chromecast. like a local hotspot.

Come on, a blender won't be used for more than 20 times. Believe me.

    • +18

i use mine a few times every day and love it . originally bought from JB for $42

    • +7

      I use mine 5 times a week

    • +5

If you have a workout routine, it can be used to make protein shakes - possibly twice daily if you are serious (breakfast and right before/after your workout).

      • +2

I use mine for protein shakes after a workout and every morning to make a yogurt drink .

    • Bought a blitz2go last winter, told myself I'd open it in Summer and make some sick smoothies. Well, the entire summer passed and it's winter again, it continues sitting unopened in my closet.

    • +1

I hated my blender, but my nutri ninja is fantastic

    • +1

Love my Nutri Ninja best blender I've owned for great price so good value. I use mine for my veg/fruit juice in the morning and protein shakes at night. Kids use it alot for chocolate milkshakes. Powerful little unit that blends the veg/fruit to smooth consistency. I'm after another one for work too.

      • +4

Great blender, kids use it for HepA smoothies whilst I use it for Margaritas, but not every day.

        • +8

          Hepatitis A smoothies?! Dafuq?

        • +5

@Crowdedthehouse: I think he's referring to frozen berries.

    • That's the way, mate.. 20 times smoothie and then back to raw fruits.. huh!

What's the cheapest way to get 4K Netflix at the moment? My 4K TV isn't smart, and doesn't have the app inbuilt :~(

    • It's not the cheapest - but if you're after an Xbox too you could get the Xbox One S and stream through it.

    • +1

Probably the new Xbox One S

    • -1

One of those Android TV boxes going for about $50… but you'll need a mouse or something to navigate

    • If not after Xbox One S, perhaps look for something like Roku 4

  • My 1st Gen ChromeCast stutters on initial connection constantly (reconnecting fix's but is a little annoying) has anyone experienced this and will the ChromeCast 2 fix this?

    • I believe that the CC2 has better WiFi connection which may fix your issue.

      • Thanks, will consider grabbing one

    • Also FYI the Chrome extension has been dodgy the last month or 2, and only got fixed the other day via native Chromecast support in Chrome. So if you haven't already, upgrade Chrome to v52.

      • thanks mate. there is a new interface to chromecast as well.

  • +1

Any reason why I'd get one of these over a ~$50 android box, when they can:

    • run android apps (kodi, youtube, etc)
    • connect to external perihperals (wireless kb/mouse)
    • connect to network shares

    ?

    • +13

      Significantly easier to use…

      • +1

i second that … wife wasnt open to it but now uses it more than i do.

        • got any recommendations for a decent android box?

        • +1

          @benny79: following too

      • I have an old no name android box and I can cast to it with like youtube etc? Is that the same as what chromcast does

        • +3

          Not really..
          You're likely screencasting (Miracast)..
Chromecast doesn't require your phone to stay in the app to continue to play.
You can even start a movie on Netflix for the kids and then leave the house and it'll continue to play.
The phone just tells the CC what movie to play and the CC goes off to the net to find and play it.

        • @scubacoles: This explains exactly what many had been looking for. Cheers!

      • got any recommendations for a decent android box?

  • +2

jesus i didnt read T&Cs lol credits available "after 2nd and 5th catalogues"

    • +2

I know i was ready to click buy right now on the chromecast 2.

  • so i have to wait for 2nd catalog to arrival in my email?

  • +60

I'm a bit confused - this doesn't seem to be an "active" deal, and won't be until some arbitrary 2nd catalogue is delivered. How can I purchase this for the price in title?

Not sure why this has so many pos

    • You are right.Between now and the second catalogue being delivered, the price may(for sure) will go up. TGG are good :)

      • +1

With the Chromecast 2 I think $58 is around the RRP, so I don't think they can increase it by much anyway. I will be interested to see what they come up with though.

        • +4

Surely TGG won't do a Dick move.

        • @PinzVidz: I hope not. I'll eye this for now and maybe upgrade

      • THE good guys. :)

    • +1

      Seconded.

There's no guarantee this will be the price weeks in the future.

      • +1

true - it could be lower :)

$58 is their current normal non-sale price, reduced from the original $59 rrp

        • Then the deal should be posted then.

          Currently, it's all hypothetical.

        • @PainToad:

so deal should state that it's the maximum price payable?

        • +1

          @tonester:

It should state the pricing for when the voucher is actually available. Hence, unless you have a crystal ball, the post is pointless.
