Optus $10 Starter Pack $2 at Coles

1570

Spotted this at my local Coles.
$2 for a $10 Optus Starter Pack, good for 1GB data or free data streaming with Spotify, Googleplay music… Probably nationwide. Happy porting!

Edit: most of them will expire in 2018, hope this helps. It is longer than the on sale $10 Coles starter pack.

o.0 Coles SIMs != Optus SIMs

    • +3

That's Coles Prepaid, this is Optus. (They're on the same network though). This is even better because of unlimited music streaming.

      • +1

OK, my mistake, this does seem a better deal if you get free music streaming.

    • +30

      Should've gone to Specsavers

  • +5

Pretty good for getting access to Optus Perks and cheap movie tickets :)

    • +2

If that's all you want, woolworths currently have the Optus $2 starter SIM for $1.

  • What are the expiry dates like? Optus has a habit of doing this when SIM expiry is imminent.

        • +6

DU99, your link is to a Coles branded SIM, whereas this is an Optus branded SIM.

    • +5

Well I politely tried to say the same thing but appearently I was wrong, they are not the same deal as pointed out above. Glad I posted politely (but still got a neg vote.) :)

      • +10

I hope you learnt your lesson (do not be polite on Ozbargain)

        • +2

Thats actually not the lesson.. JTR got significantly less neg votes than DU99.. Politeness has its benefits. Humanity is real.

Too much Sugar in tea today ;-/

  • OP, is the $10 starter pack same as this? If so, it does not have a set number of days to expiry, but rather a $2 daily trigger. My read of it is that if you make a lot of calls, you may only have a maximum of 5 days use on this SIM?

    • +1

Also 2.5GB of data for $2 isn't bad. I'm not sure but I think you could also top up for a higher plan, effectively getting $8 discount.

    • +2

The $10 starter pack sold on optus website I think has $10 credit based on "My Prepaid Plus Daily" service.
Edit: It does have a 30 days expiry provided you have remaining credit. Best to turn off data on your mobile for the day if you have low calls/data use that day.

    • So with the deal on this page when you activate one from Optus on "MY PREPAID ULTIMATE" does that mean
      a) You get $30 of credit (28 days data, unlimited text and calls)
      b) You have to pay the extra $20 to get $30 of credit
      c) You have to add another $30 recharge to get your $30 of credit

And does it apply to these sim cards from coles or only the $10 cards listed?

Sorry for the silly question but it's been about a decade and a half since I last dealt with Optus.

If you get your first $30 included, why wouldn't you do that instead of $2 days until October when the deal runs out? Are people wanting the $2 days thing because they uses masses of data every day?

      • -2

Never mind. Got confused by the advertising for the $30 sim on the $10 sim page. All clearer in the light of day. One less reason to rush into buying anything Optus.

  • Should be good to buy tons of these and coles sims and port between each other

    • +6

Optus <-> Optus MVNO ports take longer due to manual intervention needed. My recent one took 1.5 days.

      • Can confirm. Had this issue when porting from Amaysim to Optus about half a year ago.

In fact, if I didn't intervene myself and ask what was taking so long, it seems like the port may not even have gone through.

        • +2

Gotta throw the monkeys a banana once in a while

        • +1

Same carrier. Always delays and issues.
Optus carrier to Telstra carrier etc goes alot smoother and quicker.

        • +1

@albanyson: But Telstra to Woolies went normally so the bottleneck is Optus.

      • You always have to call up and ask to speak to port of house porting office and get them to verify your personal details are updated to the database. Then porting is automatic even out of hours, easy.

Amaysim used to have a uber employee in porting office, now she is in forensic liaison. Wow she was good

  • Are there any issues activating multiple sims with the same identification?

  • +1

Does this have the 10 day expiry like the other coles one, if not, why would anyone buy the coles one over this

    • This has 5 day expiry, but has free music streaming I guess.

  • 5 days of optus unlimited use for $2

  • If u don't top up after 1 month, how long does the sim stay active if I don't top up

    • +1

      6 months

      • Can receive calls in the six months?

  • +3

What do people do with these kind of sim packs?

I used the Telstra sim packs for Google Store purchases, but not sure what these are good for?

    • +3

      Good for bouncing between telcos.
The Telstra SIM packs are good for google credit, sure, but if you wanted to keep your number, you can't port from one Telstra pack to another. You could use this as a cheap way to bounce between one Telstra starter kit and another starter kit, whilst still keeping your number and even having some data to use in the middle when bouncing (as opposed to using one of those $2 replacement SIMs where $2 gets you a SIM with no credit).

      • How were these supposed to be useful for Google credit?

    • +2

Chuck them in a 4G modem for added data on the go.

      • +3

I do this, also using old Android phones (work perfectly as a Wi-Fi hotspot).

Perfect for when you need extra data on the go - holidays, remote work etc.

The Optus SIMs are particularly good for this because the My Daily Plus plan gives you 500MB for $2 worth of credit, or 1GB for $4 and the credit expiry is 6 months. Perfect for sporadic usage.

  • +2

Hold Up, Is Spotify streaming free with optus?? .. Im currently with optus and I'm pretty sure im charged to use spotify
Speaking of which, I have a dedicated Iphone that i use for spotify when im travelling, sounds like these will be good for that?

    • +2

      Prepaid customers only

      • Damn. im on month to month post paid

      • You still have to pay for spotify if you want the premium service. The free part is the data is not counted off your GB allowance.

        • yup, i pay for the premium service

    • Is it still data free if your credit expires?

  • +7

Choose between Coles and Optus depending on your usage. Both have merits. Coles gives you 1GB and unlimited calls and text over 10 days, less data but lasts longer so it's definitely better for someone like me. Optus gives you 2.5GB and unlimited calls and text BUT only lasts 5 days, and you can only use max of 500mb in a day. If you just need more data, and don't care for 5 more days of texts/calls, go for Optus. Either way, after the 10 days/5 days, the cards will have $0 value left and they'll end up in the bin! But I guess Coles has a really shitty expiry date of Dec 2016!

    • Thanks for your post, but how did you know this one only lasts for 5 days?

      • +2

I presume the best bang for buck would be the $2 a day plan, which gives you 500mb, unlimited calls and text, and streaming services a day. So after 5 days your $10 credit will be gone.

Alternatively, you could use it with other plans, either 1GB of data for 7 days but doesn't come with text/calls. Or 100 mins of calls and 300mb of data for 7 days.

From my experience, the $10 credit does not go very far if you don't use it to activate a plan. If you use it on its own, you only get about 10-20 minutes of calls, and a pathetic amount of data (maybe not even 50mb). But I guess if you're an incredibly light user it miiiight be ok? But I'd recommend not.

Can check out the plans here http://www.optus.com.au/shop/mobile/prepaid/plans?SID=con:pr…

        • Thanks, but if I were to only use the starter kit for the data, would it only last for 5 days?

        • +2

@didntknowicould: Haha if you only get the 1GB data plan you can use it for 7 days. TBH I have only used the $2 a day plans, and the data plans.

On the Optus site there is an option for Data Add-On of 1.5GB for $10 which lasts for 14 days which looks promising, but I am not sure if you can actually pay for it using your existing credit, and I've not tried it before, you gotta check with Optus/someone else about that!

    • +3

You can actually use up the whole 2.5GB in one day. It will auto bump to $4 / 1GB level when your first 500MB is finished, then you'll have the option to purchase another 500MB for $2 via their app or SMS 9999, and you can buy as many as you like until your credit is used up. The system doesn't allow $2 top ups while you are still within your $4 level, but after that you can make multiple top ups in one go without waiting for each top up to exhaust.

      • +1

Haha I've never exceeded 500mb so I didn't know about this whoops, thanks for that!

        • +3

My home broadband is pathetic so I've got a pile of sims for everyday use…

      • Good info. Very handy to know. Thanks.

    • +3

As someone above mentioned, the Optus one gives you 5 days worth of 500MB data, but it does not need to be used up in consecutive days (unlike the Coles Prepaid one). This means you might use 500MB today, and if you do not use your data tomorrow, then you can just use it in the future. The $2 gets deducted as soon as something triggers it (text message, call, data usage). This is handy if you're running down the end of your usual monthly cycle and you're running out of data on a PostPaid. You just use the Optus one to give you the extra data rather than pay excess data charges. To take advantage of this effectively, it would help to have a dual SIM phone so that your usual number is unaffected (i.e. so you can still receive calls/sms whilst using data on a secondary SIM).

It's also handy for if you're going overseas in (for example) 2 days. You'll only get $4 deducted, and you can just use the remaining $6 over 3 days when you return.

Flexibility-wise, Optus > Coles, but yes I absolutely agree both have their merits. I just wanted to highlight what some of the advantages of Optus over Coles where that you didn't seem to be aware of.

      • +1

Lol yep that's good to know, I mainly use the $2 plan on $30 starter packs and didn't know they weren't consecutive. Guess you gotta be really careful that you don't trigger it accidentally on days you want to save it but it takes too much effort for me!

  • Not sure if this sim card will give you unlimited streaming. I think it's only if you recharge $30 or more.

    Can someone confirm?

  • +2

Thanks op. obtained 3 at Coles CORINDA Qld. Not on display but staff went through under counter unopened boxes At 8.50 tonight there would have been at least 17 in open box and another unopened box there. However must be activated by December 16.

Will do my data fill in when low. Perhaps ? at Woodford if I can twig installation.

  • Premium SMS work? 1900 numbers?

    • +1

      Hahaha you wish.

    • Premium sms worked for me

  • +1

    Good deal op.
Expiry 6th September for the deal. Where did you find that?

  • If I buy 4 starter kit, then i can get on the $40 for only $8. According to Nocure, these can also be used to Recharge an existing number.Just phone Optus and ask them to do a Sim Retention (transfer of credit from the Starter Kit to your existing number) and Hanofee mentions that "If you plan to do it multiple times, and don't want to call: You can do something similar yourself here, but it'd be the other way around: http://www.optus.com.au/replacesim
It'd transfer the number and remaining credit of ur old one to the new one automatically.
As the link suggest, you have to change the Sim (that link would say taking up to 4h
to make the balance transfer work at the end, but in my experience, normally good within
    the hour".

    • +2

I don't think that works any more with a credit-loaded sim.
IE they are onto it as a cheap way to recharge. I used to do that from time to time but last few just fail with error messages. You can call them and they will do it but they grilled me about exactly WHY I was changing SIMS when they could see I had done it a few times. I bullshitted that I was changing phones but I think you could only pull this off a couple of times.
One thing: I did it from within my account, not that link you gave so worth giving it a try but be prepared to call them.

      • +1

Great info once again K.T. Sounds correct to me from my experience also.
O.K. if people share what has worked for themselves ( sometimes one off individual cases ), but more helpful to point out what is the standard up to date policy that would apply for most people.

  • Do I need to give them my ID or can I just buy it??

    • Just buy it. Up to 5 per transaction.

  • Does this give you access to the EPL as well??

  • This is freaking hilarious!!!!!
I've been hunting $15 Starter packs from telstra to use as data for my iPad.
It gives me 3GB but I only ever use 1GB out of that before the 30 day expiry.

Now I can just stock up on 20 or so of these to last me the next year and a half right?

It would only cost me $40!

      • DELETED -

Got confused with a previous comment further up.

    • Woah how do you get a year and a half out of 20 of these? They're only good for 5 days of data each, right? (I've also recently got a $15 Telstra starter pack for data..)

    • This would only work if you activated a $10 once per month and would only then get 5 days at 500MB each day for one week from date of activation. Theoretically that would work for 18 months for 20 $10 ( now $2 ) starter pack sims ( with new numbers every time ), but would only give you the ability to use data/calls/sms for one week max per month. If you activate 20 sims back to back to use each day, that would give you around 3 1/2 months ( 100 days of 500MB data and unlimited calls/sms ).

For your use, better off getting the Coles $10 sims ( now also $2 ), as they give you 1GB data for up to 10 days. Just keep in mind that they currently have an expiry date of December 2016. Some stores might vary, especially ( if/when ) they get re-supplied in the next few weeks ( her's hoping :-).

  • Can I use this for Optus Billing in the Google Play Store? Or, to be more specific, CAN I USE THIS TO BUY POKECOINS?!

    • +1

No, only Telstra SIMs have the play store billing feature.

  • +1

No stock belmont and cannington WA

  • +1

A question for those using this to port in/out to another provider. Can you port it out on the very last day or expiry? or do you usually give an allowance of 1-2 days before the expiry?

    • +1

Even if you port not too long after credit expiry the port will go through because the service is active, people can call and text you but of course you have no call, text or data credit. So really the question is can you bear to be without credit until the port completes.

      • Oh alright, thanks for the tip. I am new at this and was afraid to loose my number so I ported it in 1-2 days before the expiry. Now I can do it on the same day of expiry.

        • Just to clarify the porting in and out process, to be clear there are three expiry dates. The first and main is the sim expiry date, you have to activate or port/activate a sim before or on last day ( best to do this Monday to Friday and Sat morning business hours and sometimes later, check porting times online with your network sim provider ).

The second is the expiry date of your included data. That will depend on your included sim credit and time or data and/or service.

The third is the final sim expiry date when the whole service is cut off. This depends on the type of sim/included credit/data and how long after last credit/re-charge. Hope that helps.

  • pretty much just want for optus perks.

can i get a new number with this sim, and basically just not use it?

    • Of course, multiple sims and numbers ( not sure what maximum would be ).

  • +1

Plenty of stock at Chadstone Coles, sighted about 30 or more hanging on the rack. Price tags show $10, but they scan at $2. The lady at the counter looked surprised! Limit of 5 cards per person. Expiry date 1 Jul 2018.

  • -5

    http://www.optus.com.au/shop/prepaid/sim-card/2-sim

dont even need to leave your house

  • +1

Plenty of stock available at Lane Cove Coles. It says $10 but when you scan it's $2.

    • +1

Hahaha I was there too and when I asked at the service desk if they could do a price check the assistant volunteered: 80% off. Good thing it isn't publicised in-store or stocks would all have been snapped up already.

      • That is only because Lane Cove Coles does not have a $2 shelves on display. Other Coles have a section of all $2 stuff on sale, and the Optus $10 starter pack were all hung in there.

I went into another Coles and there are heaps of them.

        • Maybe the store(s) you went in, but from my experience of checking three, none of them had the $2 price advertised, nor had a $2 clearance stand.

  • +1

There is a $2 rack of cheap junk down aisle's where they display these, if there's none out front of stores
The 5 per person is per transaction, brought a dozen so I have bridge when porting from woollies to amaysim
Last time porting took 5 business days and I had to go back and confirm number transfer
First time I've ever had a problem, usually a mater of hours

Reminds me of that Kenny Rodgers song 'its hard, to be, atightwad'

    • It isnt it expiry on 1/12 how many bridge do you need by then?

      • +1

Expiry for the optus $2 starter pack is June 2018, at least on mine
Coles $2 starters are the ones that expire Dec 2016
        There were heaps left too
Was contemplating getting more but there seems to be plenty of deals on starter packs

        • Seems like most/all of the Coles $10 sims expire on 1/12/16, but best to check the Optus $10 sims first as the ones I purchased all had expiry date of 1/12/16 too, others expire June 2018 and possibly other dates.

  • +2

Was told it was one per person…. lol
but the person helping me knew me, so allowed me to buy five.

Having now looked at the comments, it looks like I could've just bought it legitimately without any "favours" having been done for me.

  • I always missed out on these deals.. Missed out on woolies and now these..

    • There's still a month to go, they will restock. The Optus rep was only putting the stand up in one store yesterday. They seem to be setting them up in the $2 Coles kitchen junk section. I'd say Optus will keep them pretty well stocked. Also one staff member had trouble finding the unopened ones, but they found them in a different place to the other sims behind the counter.

    • How, just try multiple Coles's over the next few weeks.
