In to see hater comments on how overprice this awesome gadget is

    • +3

not hating but it's just funny how i got a 13" cheaper than this a year ago…

      • A macbook?

        • +2

yes sir. even look at the mac air deals a year ago - 13" for $1k @ futu

        • @spaghettiman: I paid $1111 with the 10% off at jb AND some wiggling from friend as a staff member, for a 13" 128gb 4gb air. So you did really well! Good for you!

        • +1

@OnlinePred: yeah I also did something similar. ~$950 @ david jones with discounted gift cards + staff discount from friend.

        • @spaghettiman: And that was Australian stock too.

      • +1

That's not much to brag about, quite a few ozbargainers scored the 13" 2 years ago that can be resold now for the same purchased price.

        • I wasn't bragging…simply stating a fact that could have been taken as "hating".

        • I believe that was the greatest deal ozbargain has ever given me. I still kick myself I only bought one for the wife in that sale. Should have picked one up for myself as well…
          Still going strong.

        • @NigelTufnel: I second that. That was the greatest deal ever. I was lucky enough to get the MBA 11 inch for $500 in that deal. Except for some random issue with FaceTime camera still going strong. Running Windows 10 using Bootcamp to get the best of both worlds.

        • Yep that was great. Got 2 from that deal which they sent me the updated 2014 model rather than the listed 2013 ones. What a great time to be when Kogan doesn't take advantage of eBay promo and actually lowers their prices.

I think the term "awesome gadget" is a bit sensationalist for what is basically a standard laptop.

The new xiaomi laptop is worth looking at if you're not stuck on a mac.

      • +1

It's true these new Xiaomi laptops look really interesting. I think usability wise they fall into the same category as terrible windows hardware/drivers for touchpads as an example. But we will see, very interested to see the reviews!
But any way you look at it, this is the top dogs of ultrabooks/laptops, unless you want something more specific like windows, dedicated gpu, etc etc.

      • My brother and mate wants one after I showed them Xiaomi notebooks. They look pretty good spec wise. I have Intel 535 SSD on my pc and it's great experience, will see how the pcie ssd performs.

      • +3

Can you even get them in Australia?

And what happens if something goes wrong. That mac price includes having access to Apple stores.

      • They are definitely stacking up some interest. I just couldn't go back to windows otherwise I would seriously look at these

        • Can you still hackintosh? Mind you without a good trackpad…..

    • +1

No hate from me, deals like this absolve me of a shitload of pro bono support work helping family & friends with Windows machines!!! ;)

That said, I personally don't like Mac OS…but thankfully that's not the issue at hand! :)

Gotta say these macs are awesome value for what they are, they will last you years. I'm still using my daily MacBook Air 13" from 2012. Still as good as it was the day I bought it (minus a ding on the corner…). I wouldn't consider buying a windows laptop these days, still have no idea how to make a quality ultrabook. Great value for under $1k for these things.

    • +2

i agree. 2012 MBA here never had a problem.

      • +2

Agreed on this - 2011 MBA still going strong.

        • +1

Couldn't agree more- 2009 MacBook still going strong although a bit slow.

        • Used to have one too but mine had a malfunctioning controller chip after 3 years infrequent use (I mainly use my desktop and don't take laptop outside) which disabled the trackpad, one of the two USB ports, SD card reader and the iSight. Still I was able to dump it on Gumtree for $600 after scoring a new one from the epic Kogan eBay group deal.

The 13 inch MBA would have to be one of the best all rounder laptops ever made. Back in 2012 there was almost nothing to compare. Trouble is they have not been updated.

I got both a 13 and an 11 inch broadwell version of the MBAs for my daughters back in January. The 13 inch screen is fine, and that it isn't UHD or whatever is probably one of the reasons for it's awesome battery life.

And while littlest miss entropy's bane loves it, IMHO the resolution of the screen on the 11 inch is just too low, especially side by side with the 13. Compared with an rMB the screen is terrible. Otherwise it's fantastic for a highly portable full size keyboard device.

      • -1

The 11's have a higher DPI than the 13.

    • totally agree.
i bought my MacBook Air simply because all the laptops at JB HI FI were so fkn crap. seriously - built just to flog off cheap not much else.

    • Agree, my MacBook Air has a higher upfront cost than any PC notebook i've had over the years, but has proven to have a MUCH longer lifespan. Although I must say if I had bought the 11" and used it, coveting an upgrade to the 13" version would have been pretty rapid. Definitely glad I went with 13". I hate using PCs now, the trackpad is now like part of me. The only annoyance is the storage space, because I can't store my full iTunes library on it.

    • Funny you say that, my 8 year old windows laptop is going strong after ssd upgrade, whereas my MacBook purchased to replace it didn't last a year. It got stolen :(

  • +1

Would like to see a retina display on the Airs

The 13" is particularly hard to use once you've used a retina Macbook or Macbook Pro

  • +1

Does Dick Smith Kogan charge GST or are all these grey imports like Kogan now too?

    • would also like to know…

  • Great laptops. If you're planning to use Bootcamp 128GB might be a bit cramped, but otherwise the build quality is super for this price!

  • Looking to replace my 7 year old Samsung laptop soon. Sick of replacing battery every 6-12 months and it is slowing down a bit. But I think I will wait for new Macbook Pro to come out and then compare with Windows machines. Like the Air but don't like that it doesn't have retina screen.

    • If Apple don't update its laptops at its iPhone event in September, or October at the latest it will be in serious do do with its base.

      • As long as people keeping buying them y would they be in any hurry

  • +3

Apple laptops also have 1 year international warranty, I had the screen on my Kogan-bought 2015 Macbook Air replaced no questions asked at the apple store in Adelaide.

  • -2

    4GB RAM and a 16:9 low res screen> I'll pass.

    • But then you'll miss out on the 5th gen Core as well!

    • -1

yea bro, go for a windows HD 1300x700 thas the shiiiiit

      • -1

Yea! The plastic ones are the best! Even ones with a trackpad that's 2cm x 2cm!!

  • rad, thanks. just got one.

  • Not having a go at dsebay store but isn't ridiculous that they are selling 38mm Apple Watch for $482 (before discount) whilst the same Watch is available for $429 at Apple Store? They say it's an international model, yeah but was it worn by Lady Gaga that it's $60 dearer than its original price?

    • +4

sounds like you are having a go there sir

  • Top machine, just don't look at any retina Macs ;)

  • is 520$ for iphone SE 16GB worth it with the C20ds deal? or should i wait for price drop after iphone 7?

    • won't drop much, around $500 for a latest model iphone is quite cheap, the only thing is whether 16gb is sufficient for your need.

  • My mid 2011 13" Macbook Air is still going strong as the first day. Love it

    • You'll notice the battery life more than double these days, how many hours does your's last 4 ?

      • About 4 to 5. And yep battery life is much better these days but I don't mind I mostly use it at home

  • Same dicksmith store has a Apple 13” MacBook Air MMGF2 (1.6GHz i5, 8GB Ram ,128GB) AU $1,235.20 free shipping just use the same C20DS code

    www.ebay.com.au/itm/191940899211

    • If you look at their other listing this was selling for $1343.99 yesterday. They have jacked up the price by $200.

  • +1

Any chance of this being a scam? Dick Smith account only has 2 feedback…

    • And one negative feedback

    • +1

      It's not a scam - it's Kogan.
Wait, let me read what I just wrote…
