Value is questionable, what's the mark-up on flight centre compared to direct bookings?

    • I think this is a great deal.
Flight more expensive on Flight Centre? Great. That means you can price beat.. albeit only by $1. But my point is that you don't need to worry about it being more expensive than others as this gives you the opportunity to price beat.

Also - only book with Flight Centre (or any 3rd party for that matter) if you're fairly certain you're going to fly (i.e. not changing plans) because you have to pay double the fees if you wish to make changes. You need to pay a set of fees for the 3rd party for amendments, and the airline, which is just Flight Centre passing on the airline's charges to you.

      • true, they slug me with $400 x 4 tickets for my mistake and my ticket is ~1000 each. Their fees on top of the airlines fee is ridiculous. When it comes to amendment, they are truly robbers.

      • Wasn't aware they price match (beat), this actually isn't that bad of a deal then.

        • I believe they can only do this if they service the airlines u found. Ie, if they don't, they can do anything for you. So the airasia cheap flights u found can't be beaten, but the qantas flights to malaysia, they can.

        • @cloudy: No, they price beat everything that they themselves are able to book, including AirAsia etc. Stuff they can't physically book (Nok Air requires credit card paid at checkout to be sighted for boarding pass etc), the can't price beat then.

        • @Ryugen:

They beat price equated by business having ABN and either from/to should be an Australian city

For maximum saving: purchase Flight Center discounted gift card ( weekle special ) from super market ( discounted e gift card) . go for price beat and pay with FC GC

You will save at least 10% + supporting Australian job and business

        • @vr4indian: This was true up until about 6 month ago where FC overhauled their pricebeat system. Not advertised but they will now price beat ANYTHING(airfare) given that it's a legit source and does NOT require credit card being sighted upon check-in (again, Nok Air reference)

          London to Perth - Fine
Kuala Lumpur to Beijing - Fine
Some Spanish website (For some reason I swear they are all Spanish) - Fine

Given standard TnCs though, so taking into account all booking/merchant fees, currency, booked on the spot/same day etc.

Just FYI they will also try to pricematch hotels and insurance as well. More places to use those discounted gift cards.

  • As per Terms and Conditions any existing user of any ANZ credit card not eligible.

    • I think it does. The T&C says - where you currently hold or have closed an ANZ Rewards Travel Adventures credit card within the previous 12 months.

      • "This offer is not available in conjunction with other discounts, offers, packages or promotions, when transferring from an existing ANZ credit card or where you currently hold or have closed an ANZ Rewards Travel Adventures credit card within the previous 12 months."
"Existing ANZ credit card" OR "Travel Adventures card".

        • when "transferring" from an existing ANZ credit card.

        • @macadamia:

What do you think transferring means?

        • If you have an existing ANZ card, you can apply to transfer to another card type (there is a link on the internet banking). I haven't done one before but I think the balance will be transferred to the new card and the old card closed.

I think this deal should apply to us if we do a new application…

        • @macadamia:
Ok, please try and let us know how you go.

        • @macadamia:

Have u got the card yet?

        • @noskich: No.. I didn't apply for it.

        • @macadamia:
Why not? I counted on you as my guinea pig.

        • @noskich: hoping to keep my credit query for bonus points offer instead ;)

  • Better off w/ QFF points

This deal is actually a lot better than the OP suggests.

For $225, you get a free domestic return flight with Virgin, a $200 travel gift card and no fees on overseas purchases. This would be a great alternative to the 28 Degrees card given that level of value.

    • +1

Complimentary travel insurance with simple eligibility, free return flight, 2 virgin lounge passes, zero international transaction fees, free international cash advances, and points earn on everything too.

Seems pretty good to me! Covers both 28 degrees and platinum edge.

      • I hadn't thought of it replacing the platinum edge as well. Great point.

      • +1

Agree that it's a great card for everything you've mentioned above.

        However, couple of things:

I wouldn't consider this a replacement for the Platinum Edge (I know you're thinking of the free flight) because on the Platinum Edge:

        • The free flight can be booked in anyone's name
        • The free flight does not need to be booked 60 days in advance
        • The Rewards program that the ANZ earns into (ANZ Rewards) is not as good as AMEX Membership Rewards which the Platinum Edge earns into
        • The points that you earn on the Plat Edge gives you bonuses at supermarkets and petrol stations, whereas the ANZ card just gives you a flat earn at wherever you spend
        • The 2pts/$ on the ANZ AMEX is basically equivalent to the 1pt/$ you get on the Plat Edge, but this has no bonus points on any type of spend and the points are less flexible relative to AMEX Membership Rewards
        • The travel insurance eligibility is less restrictive than the ANZ Travel Adventures. The Plat Edge will cover you for overseas trips as well, whereas the ANZ only covers you for domestic (it is worded "interstate") trips of up to 14 days.

On the flipside, the ANZ card is better because:

        • You can book flights from the East Coast over to the West Coast (Perth) which is not possible on the Platinum Edge.
        • 2x Virgin Australia Lounge access per year
        • Forex charges waived

Considering all of the above, I still think Plat Edge > ANZ Travel Adventures, but why not have both?
I think of the ANZ Travel Adventures Card merely as a replacement to the 28 Degrees. It doesn't replace the Platinum Edge to me.

Btw, free international cash advances? Where did you see that? You mean it doesn't cost money to withdraw from an ATM overseas?

        • Yeah it's not better in every aspect but comparable. I have the platinum edge but may have my partner apply for this one.

As for the cash advance it's point #3

ANZ will waive the overseas transaction fee on foreign currency transactions and transactions where the merchant or financial institution accepting the card is located outside Australia. ANZ will also waive the cash advance fee if you use your ANZ Rewards Travel Adventures account to withdraw actual cash from a branch or ATM located overseas. A cash advance fee will apply to any other cash advances on your account. ATM operator fees may apply.

Agree ! This is a great deal as the Flight Center voucher and Virgin return flight more than pays for the annual fee.

      • I think Flight Centre voucher is a one-off?

        • Correct. If you use the flight to book East to West coast you should be able to still get value out of the annual fee ongoing.

  • I would go for this if I didn't need a better credit rating for a house purchase

  • How "limited" are flights over the public holiday weekends? Is it near impossible to find a free flight? How about the end of year period?

  • Anyone know the restrictions as to the free flight?

So someone said that you can fly East coast - Perth OK? Cause thats a big pain for me being from Perth and now living in Sydney with the Platinum edge card…

    • There's a map on the ANZ page, but link below.

Seems like Syd —> Per is fine.

      http://campaign.anz.com/credit-cards/rewards-travel-adventur…

    • Yea on this card you can do it in either direction. With the Platinum Edge & Velocity Platinum, you can only do PER-East Coast return (in the case of Velocity Platinum, only PER-SYD). The flight cannot originate on the East Coast to Perth for those two cards.

  • Anyone know if the Flight Centre flight can be booked for somebody else?

    • Look like it's just a voucher code that expires in 6 months (not great!)

Not sure if it's locked to the account holders name, would hope not.
