  • PS4 Slim out on 15/9 for $439 - so I'd wait for run out deals like Xbone

$399 at JB Hifi with Need for Speed Rivals.

      • +7

        Not worth extra 60

        • +1

I think he meant the slim one

    • +4

So you're suggesting we wait to pay $100 extra for a console that's essentially the same?

      • +3

quieter, smaller, "new" controller, use less power. personally, i think the old one is really noisy.

        • +3

Ah, it's not quieter than the 1200 model, has trash-tier build quality and the new controller has an added permanent light on the touchpad which will be extremely irritating. The slim is the "cheap to build" model just like the trashy final iteration of the PS3. It exists to save Sony money, not to improve the product (it has things like the optical port from the normal PS4 removed). The current 1200 model is the PS4 to get as it has better build quality, is quieter (check the YouTube breakdown videos) and looks good in your entertainment centre (ie. it doesn't look like the work experience kid at Sony designed it after getting inspiration from a cheese burger). Pro-tip: I'd grab a 1200 model PS4 while you can -for cheap- NOW or hold out for the second iteration of the PS4 Pro when Sony come to their senses and add a UHD Blu-ray drive to it.

        • @BookerDeWitt:

You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. the Slim PS4 IS quieter, better built, uses less power, has better WiFi and in all likelihood runs cooler than any PS4 before it:

          http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2016-hands-…

The only real negative is the lack of an optical port, a bit of a bummer if (like me) you use Astro A50s with your system

        • @interfreak: My 1200 is silent; the noise difference would be negligable and redundant. I personally don't feel it's a good deal to lose an optical port, build quality and aesthetics just to -finally- get an improved wireless board (any dedicated gamer uses ethernet anyway) unless you're upgrading from the original iteration of the PS4 which sounded like a airplane taking off.

        • -1

          @BookerDeWitt:

I don't think it's fair for you to assume the build quality is going to be lesser than a normal PS4.

        • @BookerDeWitt:

You're not just getting 5ghz, it's significantly smaller and uses less power. How do you know the build will be sh*t?

All it loses is an ancient audio connector that doesn't even have enough bandwidth for FHD audio.

      • I believe it also supports 5ghz wifi which will be pretty important to some.

      • Well it isn't the same, but no, he is suggesting price will drop when slim arrives.

Seems a lot of sig figures

A large degree of precision there

      • +7

        Needs more precision.

  • +1

    In store too :)

    • Doesn't it say pickup unavailable?

      • +5

As soon as Lyl posted I rang my local and it was $339

        • +1

          Wow that's dedication

  • Better to pay a little more and get the fine tuned redesigned model which is coming next Friday.
The new console has better controller too.

    • +3

It may be better but it looks terrible!. Almost like a giant PSTV

      • You're exaggerating just a little.

    • $230 extra is a "little more"?

      • $60 more…

        • The way he worded I though you were talking about the pro.
In that case yes that's a good point, if you like the styling.

  • Too much, gonna wait for the 299 Xbox One original type clearance that's going to be here when the new model drops.

    • +3

I hope you realise that Target and BigW are doing 500GB Xbone for $269 although you'll probably have more luck at BigW.

      Sale ends 10th.

      • Yea yea, sorry my bad for not being clearer, I meant I'll wait for a 299 PS4 clearance, as in an Xbox One original type clearance sale for the PS4 original.

If BigW or Target have the PS4 for 269 in the near future, that would be crazy!

        • How do you know this will happen?

        • @suicine94:

I don't know for sure, I'm just hoping and waiting, based off of the sale the Xbox One's underwent when the One S came to stock.

  • -4

Has been this price last year

  • Couldn't believe still lots of stupid idiots on scumtree still selling their used PS4 way more expensive than $339!

    • I can't believe the PS4 Pro lacks 4K UHD playback…

The XBOX One S is suddenly looking more appealing.

      • Do you truly even care or is it more appealing for you to just jump on the band wagon?

        • +5

As I own two PS4 consoles already, and a 4K tv, then yes, I do care actually, because had the PS4 (either new versions) added 4K UHD playback it would have made for a natural upgrade giving me a system that not only uses less power than my current PS4 but also allows me to benefit from my decision to buy a 4K tv and enjoy the benefits of 4K high quality images (not withholding the discussion about 2K mastering), HDR video all from one single unit … Now, I have to either look at buying a dedicated UHD player, and or PS4 PRO should I decide to go down the path of VR.

I'm very much a PS4 fan, but the decision not to include UHD support is frankly showing a lack of vision from Sony and for me to consider the Xbox is not taken lightly.

One can only hope that perhaps they will still offer the ability to enable UHD support via a firmware upgrade (Supposedly the drive is not UHD disc compatible)

        • @digitalaxon:

I think you are misinformed, only the PS4 slim consumes less power, not the PS4 Pro.

        • @tranqme:

Point taken, slight oversight on my part, I was referring to the Slim. My apologies.

        • @digitalaxon:

It's upsetting but understandable from Sony. How many 4K blu rays do you think you are really going to own?

Andrew House said that they've noticed most of the video content on the PS4 is streaming, not adding in a 4K Disc Drive has probably allowed them to hit the 399 Price point. I think more people have won here than lost out, you unfortunately are on the bad side.

All is not lost, buy a Xbox One S and have both gaming consoles? Also I have a feeling in about 2-3 years we will have PS4 Pro Slim or refresh and that might have 4K Blu ray play back.

        • @Zylam Marex:

You bring up an interesting point. I would think for future proofing almost all future movie purchases I would make would be 4K (where available), so that in the future should I invest in a 4K protector I have content available and can take advantage of improved image quality.

When DVD's first came out, I like many purchased a player ($600 Pioneer) and a few DVD's now and again… With BD on the other hand, I believe the investment in purchasing is far better - you get better sound, better image quality, native 24P, and the list goes on - much like my Bluray collection which is quite substantial (and I do mean a few 100 discs)..

So yes, I probably will own a few, and having a PS4, PS3, DVD player, Bluray player, media player under the tv set is starting to look a bit cluttered.. I had hoped the new PS4 would allow me to consolidate a few of those into the one unit and make it like my 'one box for all my entertainment needs'

Granted I'm more of a tv watcher and more casual gamer, and in my situation I feel sony has really missed a wonderful opportunity to bring access to UHD media to the masses like it did with the PS3 and Bluray. If Microsoft can do it and they keep in mind originally supported HD-DVD (which I own one of those drives btw) then surely Sony can take a leadership role and show people why their name was once associated with state of the art entertainment..

        • +1

          @digitalaxon:

Considering Sony is a founding member, and the fact that they have the ability to scope the market in multiple different areas (such as 4k uptake, production usage, division establishing 4k entertainment, console/standalone usage, etc), perhaps it is too small a piece of the pie to risk production costs. They probably well gain partial royalties from drive licencing.

This generation may well be quite a bit shorter than the previous one.

      • The new PS4s support UHD playback.

        • -2

@digitalaxon: There are other forms of playback other then blu ray, it can stream netflix and youtube at 4K.

        • @Synk: Gross bro. Seriously, what's the point of 4k if you're going just intending to watch low-bitrate tier (internet streamed) content. Do you even know what you're talking about? I hope you didn't just invest in an expensive 4k TV just to watch YouTube in "4k" on it (PML).

        • +1

@BookerDeWitt: By definition 4K is about resolution, not bitrate or picture quality. So we've all got a point.
          Especially me. :-P

        • +2

@BookerDeWitt: 4K streaming obviously can never match 4k blu ray but it's still a much bigger upgrade from 1080P streaming which is what most consumers care about(an upgrade in quality). Besides, the average consumer would take the convenience and lower cost of 4k streaming over the quality upgrade from 4k blu ray just like how Netflix has become popular despite 1080p streaming not being able to match the quality of standard 1080p blu ray.

Although I do see the appeal in 4k blu ray, I also see the appeal in 4k streaming. This is why I made the post in the first place because his initial post led me to believe that it didn't support 4k Netflix and Youtube which isn't true. I would have been completely put off by the new PS4 if it didn't support 4k Netflix. Whilst, I don't have a 4k TV/monitor right now, I do intend on getting back into 4k gaming when GPUs can well and truly handle the load so having the ability to do 4k playback is pretty important in my eyes.

      • Yep, with a much much smaller size, and that annoying brick power adaptor has gone, currently at bigw for $388 bundled is a good deal, hope to see it drop to $299 by xmas, although I still prefer PS4 since i want to play most of the Jap Gundam games which are PS exclusive …

      • This is the original ps4 for sale. The pro isnt out yet.

  • Omg this is soooo good! Best deal in a while

  • +1

Had a $100 gift card expiring soon, used it for this ($240!). Thanks!

    • Bargain.

  • So tempting, but will most likely fork out for a Slim

  • +1

Very tempting, I've been holding off on the PS4 due to my massive PS3 backlog and the fact games are so cheap atm (have nearly 200 discs)

But BF1 is coming! So damn annoying I need to buy a damn PS+ subscription to play online now though, ugh…

I might be a bit late to the party, but just wanted to let everyone know that in my local JB Hi-Fi store (Westfields Parramatta NSW) the customary console offers printouts JB Hi-Fi has for console deals had print error. They listed the $339 console deal together with Uncharted Collection game, even though it was supposed to be just a bare console. They took it down when I asked about it, but gave me the benefit of having this game for free with the console deal. Other stores might have a similar issue, so maybe some of you guys will still benefit from that - keep your eyes open! :)

    • Please Any chance you can upload the receipt? this seems like a hit and miss offer. But I really want the uncharted 4 bundled together. it would really help if can upload receipt for proof.. much thanks in advance. u can upload via http://imgur.com/ :)

    • Same deal for me on Saturday at Artarmon store

      • @Green85 or kingchino would be helpful if you could post reciept please? thanks

  • ok for someone who doesn't really care about 4k, is my best bet to pick up one of these for $339 or wait for the PS Slim? Whats the backward compatibility with PS3 games like?

    • There is no 'backwards compatibility'.

      • ah right…crap. that's only xbox one isn't it?

  • I have just started using my ps4 again which I purchased at the start of the year and find that the 500gb hard drive is becoming an issue with all the game updates dlc etc. I don't understand why Sony doesn't allow us just to plug an external drive in instead of having to replace the internal drive.
