    • damn that's good. how did I miss that?????? thanks

      • Check out this one is from Australia and seems to have some certifications which sound impressive, not sure how much they mean though lol. I'm gonna buy one to check temps on my RC car motors http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Portable-Digital-Infrared-Thermom…

        • Check out this one is from Australia

          More than twice the price

seems to have some certifications which sound impressive,

It doesn't have ANY certifications whatsoever. None. Zero. Zilch.

The blurb in the Ebay description is simply to suck people just like you into paying twice as much as you need to pay for a cheap piece of chinese junk.

not sure how much they mean though lol

          The CE means "Chinese Export"

The RoHS means "Reduction of Hazardous Substances" which technically means that the workers who assembled it were not exposed to lead-based solder.

Whilst there are letters 'C' and 'E' there is no RoHS certification mark on the handle, nor the label. Then again, there is not such thing as a RoHS mark anyway, so that's why. The little icon of a rubbish bin actually indicates that it should not be thrown away in the trash. That is an IEC standard, but all of these are just pixels on a printed label using images downloaded from the internet.

However the seller wholeheartedly warns: "Never buy any laser products have no CE or RoHs certification on it's handle." which is exceptionally funny since their own item doesn't have any on the handle either.

Certifications are technical compliance documents, usually in the form of a A4 sized certificate that is issued by a suitably accredited international body that state that the product meets certain standards. These documents are never shown on the product, as they wouldn't physically fit.

You can be assured that if the product really DID have any certifications, that there would be copies of those documents in the ebay listing. Of course, many of the "certification documents" are fakes, or apply to a completely different product to what is being offered for sale.

It's like "ha ha dumb westerner, they believe any shit we put in specifications page".

I'm gonna buy one to check temps on my RC car motors

Then you definitely shouldn't buy that one as it doesn't have emissivity adjustability. The tester in the deal and your $19.99 eBay item are only designed for measuring matt black surfaces. If the surface is glossy, anodised, plated, or whatever then these may (will) be wildly innacurate.

Read the post below from masuta and especially the linked PDF, then research on Google.

Then again, they will be wildly inaccurate anyway, so I suppose it won't matter.

Can anybody comment on the accuracy? I know it says 1.5% or 1.5 (not sure what that means) but IRL?

      • I have one of these things. Not sure if it's the same brand but it was about $20 from eBay. I love the device, it's really useful to see how hot your grill is or where hot spots occur in your frying pan etc
However I have used a $300 infrared thermometer at work and it was more accurate and even then it's still not as accurate as a needle thermometer (where the needle is inserted into the food)

If you need a thermometer for around the house you should get this

  • OP, did you want this post removed completely or changed to the eBay link? I believe you marked it expired currently.

    Thanks

    • ebay link. if you could change the store please. thanks Hamza

      • No probs, link and title changed. Please update further as required.

        Thanks

  • can this be use to check Human Body Temperature ?

    • I think not. There's a reason you stick a thermometer into yourself. (Surface temp does not equal body temp.)

    • +2

Ir thermo only detect surface temp, here is a short read for you.

      http://www.fluke.com/fluke/uses/comunidad/fluke-news-plus/ar…

      • Thanks guys how this differs from what local chemist shop sells? isnt they work on same principle ?

        E.g. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/DM300-Handheld-Infrared-Thermomet…

This same guys is also selling above which can be used for Body and Object Temp

        • Unless it has a thermocouple (plug in stick bit) it will only do surface, may work in ear ect without.

Usualy its build quality and accuracy that suffers, if its not an industrial use you are fine with a cheapy. In our kitchen we have a ir with thermocouple I bought off eBay for $25 has a . 5 accuracy where as that one is rated 1.5 deg variance.

You might be able to aim it at the back of your throat while looking in the mirror and get a … mildly accurate readiong :p

    • I have a body temperature version similar to this one (http://www.dx.com/p/1-4-lcd-non-contact-forehead-infrared-bo…).

It's not very good - it's always out by a couple of degrees compared to our Omron in-ear thermometer. Wouldn't recommend.

      • Thanks this will help

  • +2

Something with adjustable emissivity would be more useful:
    http://m.ebay.com.au/itm/12-1-LCD-Digital-Non-Contact-IR-Inf…

  • Is this the thing that shoots a laser dot? If so, I had no idea they were this cheap.

    • The laser is just to indicate roughly the spot where the IR is being measured from.

      • The laser is actually quite a distance above the measurement spot, this is easy to tell when aiming at a small (hot) target.

  • Out of stock

    • More than 10 available

thks bought 2 will be good for, checking the frypan temperature , bbq griddle etc.

  • I'd love to get one of these and fire it at Trump during his next debate mid-tirade.

But i don't know if his temperature will be within the allowable measurable range.

  • Price is now 9.99
