    Fire sale???

    • +37

No you're confusing that with the Samsung Note 7.

      • said fire no explosive!

      • +4

I love how there's a note 7 joke in nearly every phone post haha

  • They still have some left?

    • Apparently sold out in the UK and there are no replacement units. Guessing they're just gonna keep discounting until they run out their existing inventory.

      • +2

Never understood the appeal of Windows flagships. The software has hardly any apps and the ones they do have are not the latest editions. Software is also buggy still. Only redeeming feature is the clean interface and camera but even the camera has been outdone by Samsung and Google now.

        • +2

While thats somewhat true re:apps, you can simply use the webpage as an app. You can 'bookmark' sites by pinning them to your home screen.

Also, camera is much better on microsoft/nokia. It has an auto hdr, whereby you can adjust the strength of:flash, hdr/exposure as per your specific need.

Most reviewers simply use the auto settings, but while it makes it easy to compare, does not truly show the true power of a camera.

Software is buggy tho…iris scanner, works….but fingerprints have better implementation (eg signing into websites).

Continuum is awesome for basic computing.

        • +4

Nice camera comparison here from Windows Central.

          http://m.windowscentral.com/best-smartphone-camera

@Ronnnie: It's people voting on images, and it simply shows people prefer oversaturated colours. If you read the article, the author actually describes the Lumia and the v20 as the most accurate to life. The s7 over saturates too much, while the iPhone under saturates.

Not a fan of selfies, so I cant comment on personal experience.

Plus you set your Lumia camera on 8mp, not 20mp. This allows you to use pixel oversampling, minimising noise and improving picture quality. Not using these features and not knowing how to use the features is pretty silly. Hence my argument above. Put everything on auto means its easier to compare, but you're not using the camera correctly…

        • @mbck: How do you define 'better camera?' Ease of use and a nice on-screen image are the most important criteria these days, and the Lumia 950 has been overshadowed in virtually every metric that counts. It's also a slow camera. Try taking multiple photos of a moving object on a 950, and waiting for 'adding finishing touches' prompt to finish, is an exercise in frustration.

Most reviewers simply use the auto settings, but while it makes it easy to compare, does not truly show the true power of a camera.

It isn't lazy, it's now 90% of people use their camera, and representative of mainstream usage. But even by that notion, auto HDR can be toggled on other phones too (it's even the default on new ones like the Pixel).

While thats somewhat true re:apps, you can simply use the webpage as an app. You can 'bookmark' sites by pinning them to your home screen

I really hope this is a joke.

          @Strand0410:

Each to their own. Don't stress, its just a phone. Simply putting a different point of view. You're smart enough to see that I'm not the 90% of population.

Ps auto hdr on the Lumia is different to every other phone. You set a sliding scale as per your own personal taste, not google, not iPhone, not Samsung. You'd like a lot of flash, a little hdr effect, somewhere in between? It's up to you.

Re apps, I didn't say it was an ideal implementation, but it works. There's a difference between, you can't do that, vs yes you can.

Slow camera, true, but in the example of the windows central website, none of the picture settings required a fast immediate action. If you want to take a picture quickly, you either blur things, or you cant frame the picture right. Which means you might as well not take a picture. Solution? Take a video, crop the picture later. (hint, the Lumia has a dedicated camera button, hold and you record a video)

        • +1

          @mbck:

Solution? Take a video, crop the picture later.

If you think that's a solution, count me out of your 10%.

Re apps, I didn't say it was an ideal implementation, but it works.

But it doesn't. It's like people saying 'just pin the site' after Amazon and eBay dumped their WP apps. The whole point of those apps was functionality like notifications for purchases, or being able to scan barcodes, which hasn't yet been replicated in a mobile website.

        • +2

          @Strand0410:

Frankly, if people are very reliant on apps, they shouldn't choose wp. Universal apps is only one step in fixing that problem. And I think its obvious people are staying away from wp for now and into the future until circumstances change.

In saying that, I can set eBay up so I get email notifications for my watched items ending, postage, etc. I dont see the difference. Never used barcode scanning, though id imagine that's useful for sellers?

You'll get a much clearer picture through taking a frame from a video as opposed to trying to take multiple blurry pictures (fyi, 30fps vs 10 photos per second). Just Imo. Never had issues with my method.

        • +3

          @mbck:

Email notifications aren't app notifications. So all your email notifications are cluttering your inbox, what are your filters like? And what if you're using a device that does have a working eBay app? You'll get double notifications. This is, at best a half measure.

          Never used barcode scanning,

It lets you add items to cart, also useful for price comparisons. I can keep rattling off more examples where apps beat pinning a website if you want.

You'll get a much clearer picture through taking a frame from a video as opposed to trying to take multiple blurry pictures

You're only forced to choose between this method or a blurry photo because the 950 camera is slow. You think professional sports photographers film their subjects then remove frames after the fact? No. The 950 had a good camera, and it's gotten worse with the latest builds and prolonged 'adding finishing touches,' while newer ones have leapfrogged it. The fact that the 950 lost a blind poll on WC, and can't take decent photos of moving subjects, really undermines your claim that the camera is 'much better.'

EDIT: Like clockwork, the silent WP fans would rather downvote a comment than attempt to disprove it.

        • +2

          @Strand0410:

Lol attempt to disprove? Nothing in life is black nd white. It's obvious wp doesn't fit you, which begs the question why you are in this thread. I'm happy with what I have.

Sports photography…right, as if you use your phone for that. All of these phones has 4k video…why not use that function? It's a much better work around than 'burst mode'. I'm repeating myself, but you obviously haven't disproved this.

Email notifications are still notifications, no? Doesn't notification tell you what is happening? What's hard about swiping to the right to delete a notification? Let alone an email.

Good for you for using the barcode. It matters little to me. I can talk about continuum but I'm sure that matters little to you. Oh I can remove my battery too, so I dont have to fork out 1k every 2 years. But this probably means little to you too.

Blind tests simply shows what a majority people prefer, saturated photos. Read the articles and the Lumia has natural colours. Use the correct function (for starters, 8mp with oversampling, instead of full 20 mp which are only useful if you want to print large photos).

I know what I can do with my Lumia, sorry you don't. Don't take it out on me ;)

What you see as junk, others will see as art. Moral of the story? I'll let you figure it out.

          You're smart enough

        • +1

          @Strand0410:
I'm a WP fan and I up voted you. You make valid points. Fyi I have the 950xl from the last deal.

If the person is seriously going to be a frequent user of eBay and rely on specific apps that's better in android or ios, this is not the right phone for the person.

There are workarounds under WP but they won't truly be giving the best user experience. WP users know this and accept this. Would strongly suggest fist timers who are buying a WP would research what they are get into before buying the phone.

Fortunately for me I have an android tablet that makes up my app gap and all the apps that I want on my work phone is there. f b, Banking app, browsing, youtubr, even Picasa with backup (buggy occasionally). I don't play games much as that's what my Xbox is for. I just like the user interface of work and works well with my subscription with office 365 and Xbox live.

I do love wordament at the moment though. 😁. Personally would love to see WP grow. They have improved alot compared for the past few years, imo

        • @mbck: Just reading this. I own a Lumia 950, and I'm a camera noob, but is 8mp better than 20mp, how so? Or is there an article I can read about?

        • @kaykaykay:

You can set 8mp JPG + 16 mp DNG in the normal AR. I don't believe the 950 does the super sample mode that the user is talking about. That was a feature of the Lumia 1020 (which used a much bigger sensor and is a better camera) if memory serves me correctly.

        • @mbck: is continuum awesome? Some people here have said it's buggy

        • @Jackson: It's got the potential to be great. 950 is pretty much the first phone that allows it so pretty much lots if WIP. Hope they continue to focus in making it great.

        • -1

@harkoliar: so not yet really I guess

        • @Jackson:

Continuum relies on developers supporting it. Right now as it stands there's little to no support by developers on windows phones. And even less so when it comes to continuum. So there's potential for it, but it doesn't look like that potential will be seen anytime soon. If anything things are regressing in the windows phone world. In recent times we have seen that developers are removing apps from the store rather than offering updates or bringing out new apps. Usually an apps like eBay, PayPal or Amazon get removed from the store, then there will be rumours by the community that a new uwp is being worked on for those apps. Maybe they are, but in the mean time users are left without support. It's actually quite depressing seeing how the app gap is growing and the lack of new replacements coming in. Then there's the poor performing new apps like the official one from Facebook. It's fantastic that the platform has finally got official support for such a popular app, it's unfortunate though how freaking horrible that app performs. I don't know if it something to do with windows phone or the developer, but Facebook performs worse on the 950 than a $40 Android phone from 2014. Facebook just recently lifted their ram requirements for the app to 2gb, so they appear they are having issues with getting their app to work well on lower end w10m device and that means most users on the platform won't be able to use the official facebook app now anyhow. Hopefully lifting the requirements means they can optimise it to run better on higher end phones. It's a shame that w10m is taking so long for Microsoft and developers to get it right. We really need more competitors or things just stagnate. Continuum well supported has potential to change the landscape of what a mobile computing is forever. At the moment it is just stagnating and leading nowhere.

@harkoliar: Wordament and Minesweeper are two of the things I miss most about Windows Phone, except they upgraded minesweeper and complicated it, and the original (from about 4 years ago) is no longer available.

Thankfully Wordament is also available on Android

    • Not sure why this says "out of stock" still in stock, just ordered another 950XL.

  • +10

Lost all interest in MS. They have also dropped support for Skype for anything not running W10 Anniversary update. Low volume of apps and no cross platform interaction within MS domain. Avoid.

    • +2

Not sure you're aware but there are actually alternatives to Skype.

      • +1

What's up, Viber, wichat, messenger to name a few. So many alternatives these days.

        • +5

          Lol @ what's up

"Hey guys, I just came across this cool new messaging app that you all need to download just to talk to me because I'm on Windows Phone now! How cool!"

        Yeah. No.

        • Whats app, viber, messenger, duo are not cool new messaging apps. They're widely used.

        • +3

@BTRaynes: That's kinda beside the point though. If you're actively using Skype to keep in touch with other people who are actively using Skype, it's a massive pain in the arse to get people to switch just because you got a different phone.

      • but the one that you want to talk to also needs to have the same app… some just like to stay with one

      • Not that anyone in the business world expects people to use. It's a MS product, how can they not support it?

  • +1

    10% cheaper than before!

    • -2

Actually both models are more expensive than the Domayne deal earlier this month

      • Microsoft store has cashrrwards, 4%. Which means it brings this deal to 431.

        Domayne is 424+9ship= 433.

So just a hair cheaper here.

  • Glad I returned my faulty one I bought last time they were discounted to 499! Heh

  • Hope these last until the 9th of Dec, so I can claim gst when I go on holiday =P

      Coupon expires Nov 6.

    • You have 60 days to claim GST, so buy it now or close to the expiry date of the coupon (06/11)

Be aware that if you run Windows Phone 10, you have to pick a window of at least 6 hours a day where the phone is permitted to download and apply updates, including reboot. If you notice a reboot is about to happen, you can delay it, but if you don't the update can take upwards of 15 minutes on my Lumia 532 and the phone can't be used in the meantime. I have found no way around this despite discussions on message boards and Facebook including discussions with Microsoft staff.

If you want to give this to someone as an emergency phone or use it for on call work or need to be available at all times for any reason Windows Phone 10 is probably not for you. It is certainly not for me. My Lumia 532 phones are now considered cool toys and nothing more.

    • This annoys the hell out of me too. (Actually it's more the beep it makes when it reboots at like 4:45am)

To be fair, you will get one, and sometimes two updates a month (it's not installing updates all the time). The only exception would be if you're doing the Insider builds - in which case please don't use a beta (at best) OS on something you need reliability from.

    • +4

woh woh, they do this 'force your device to turn off' update shit on their PHONES too? jesus christ microsoft.

      • +2

I don't know what's happening with their phones, but this has never happened to me with a Lumia 950. Also with Quiet Hours enabled it doesn't make any noise at night under any circumstances other than a set alarm.

        • Do you have WIFI at home? If there's a way around this I really would like to know what it is. The 532 would actually be quite a decent phone for my purposes (at least as a backup) if not for this. I still have a couple of others on Windows 8. So my solution with those is not to upgrade.

        • @syousef: not sure why it has never been a problem for me, but if you have an update ready to install you can override active hours and delay the install until a time you specify by going to phone update setting -> restart options.

        • @dave999:

Sure IF you notice it in time!

      • +1

Just clarifying from my experience not force shutdown but force restart.

I have 6 WP in my drawer gathering dust. My son even rejected my 930 and went for a Iphone 4.
Pity it was a good OS that was just too little too late

    • I have 6 WP in my drawer

Damn, took you 6 goes to switch from windows? :P

    • My 930 from work is nothing but checking work email and call that's it

Apps sucks. Abandon ship no Skype unless WP10. Stuff MS

  • +3

    Your 2600th deal. Congrats.

  • +1

What do people think of the new HP Windows phone? Also nice deal for your 2600th

    • +1

Unless you'll be using HP workspace, its not worth it….not at full price or 10-20-30% discount. 40-50% might be interesting.

Hp workspace allows you to run full desktop programs within a virtual box. It's great if you'll be using it. It terms of how well it's implemented, check YouTube.

    • +1

It appears to be a nice phone with nice hardware.

However, the app problem is no better, it's a large device, and the camera doesn't seem as good as these Lumias (but HP has been improving it).

The problem when comparing with the 950 line is that these discounts make the HP look quite expensive.

    • +1

The HP phones are really targeted at Enterprise users. Which don't really need apps per se. I know my workplace is looking to deploy them due to the fact that a part of our workforce could technically just use the phone as their work device due to the limited applications they would use for their work i.e. email, web and office items.

      • We at an enterprise level use at least 2 apps that don't run in WP

  • +2

Great! futher 10% discount for students.

    • wow that's crazy!

  • New to oz bargains and in the market for a new phone…while this seems like a reasonable price for someone who is want to buy a phone out right…for an extra $200 you could get a Oneplus 3 that I keep reading good things about…has anyone seen any deals for that on oz bargain or know of places on the web to find a good price?

    • +1

If you live in a Metro area then the OP3, Xiaomi phones, or any other phone without Band 28 will be fine. Plenty of people get worked up about it's absence but in reality it only makes a difference when you head out of town, and even then in my experience (in Victoria) it's not really noticeable. It's certainly not essential, and I didn't let its absence put me off my Redmi Note 3 Pro

    • extra $200…

    • +1

Why would you ask that in a Lumia deal? They are hardly even that comparable

-Local stock (2 year warranty) vs grey import (12 month warranty and probably more of a hassle to deal with)
-The 950xl is meant to be a no compromise flagship though a 2015 generation flagship, which was released at much higher price point and a windows phone
-The op3 is like a flagship spec device with some compromises to keep the price lower but a newer 2016 generation with benefits of newer tech
-The 950xl is the Australian model so obviously supports all the local bands

I think if you were looking for an Android phone to compare this with, then the nexus 6p is probably the closest one.

  • One Plus 3 is not designed to be used in Australia. It does not contain 700 MHz spectrum or LTE Band 28. This band is an essential component of Telstra and Optus network.

  • +1

I loved my lumia 640…. But when it was crushed in a motorcycle accident I got an oppo. Hardware wise - and OS wise it's not as good….. But a man gotta have dee apps.

    • +1

Good to hear it was only your phone that got crushed

  • I woild like to tinker with WM10, but not at this price.

  • -3

    MICRO$OFT

  • Well apart from all other issues the biggest one is MS forcing users to upgrade to new SW that is not compatible with old hardware. I loved my 520, 640 for maps, Skype, and more but the situation has got worse with apps failing to work because you have old SW and if you upgrade the HW fails. So a complete SNAFU for existing users and the same situation will be for new users who buy now in 2 years time from now? Where is Nokia?

  • Re One Plus 3 as, some_one_some_where , mentioned you will be able to use the phone because you will have access to frequency bands from 1-7 which are 3G and widespread across Australia and I think 1 4G band that you will be able to access when your outdoors .I contacted One Plus One and asked if they will be selling a phone with B28 enabled but they said not at this time .I guess the Australian market it to small and well covered by other brands .There have been issues reported about the battery and also memory not being fully utilisied due to it running the battery down .A nice phone all the same

  • Still have my Nokia 1520, see all these Android devices about the place and the Axon 7 looks nice but I can't justify going back to Android until the Nokia dies (which won't be for a long time I feel).

Things about Windows 10 I like, it all works so so well. It is a great OS that is stable on the Nokia. VR app no longer supporting my hardware and I think any Windows 10 version.

The Nokia 1520 is fantastic and 930 also nice. The 950 has a nice screen but can get very warm / hot even after the firmware update and if dropped, good luck replacing that screen at your local repair shop.

When people talk about no apps, Windows 10 does have the main apps such as Twitter and Facebook and the store is not that bad though I am not an app fan. If you are not that concerned about apps and want a camera and an easy to use phone with great sound quality during voice calls, it is a good choice.

P.S. Talking about taking too long to take a photo. Under 1 second from screen off I can get a shot off using the dedicated camera button.

  • +2

A lot of negative comments here, but I actually prefer Windows Phones to Android or iOS.

Until they stop updating (and they actually update more than both), and until my phone is obsolete (which won't be till around 2018, maybe even 2019), I won't be using anything else.

I am sticking to Windows until I have no choice but to switch to Android. Pigs will fly before I use Apple.

Windows just works well for me. It is not good for some people, maybe even most people, but it works great for me. It improves my productivity a great deal. The way my notification sync, emails, themes etc is even better than what my computer does.

I haven't really found a problem as of yet that I couldn't understand, fix or rectify…and there are a lot of things that my 950XL does that Iphones cannot do. So it is a question of problems that CAN be fixed..and bonuses that many other phones do not have.

A lot of consumers today run away…at the first sight of something that isn't tailored made. I am a little bit of an old school 'computer use', back i nthe day when consumers actually had brains and knew how their devices work. So it works fine for me.

  • Also, syncing music on to these devices is utterly, utterly hopeless.

Groove will import playlists from itunes but won't sync them…the recommended way is to upload your music to onedrive and sync it back with the phone (WTF!?)

    • Best thing about WP -> Connect to PC, device appears like usb drive, create a music folder, copy .mp3 files over. Done. No syncing BS, no iTunes, no crap.
I have since gone to an iPhone as my last Lumia 830's battery went. I still miss the sheer simplicity of copying files to and from like a USB drive and the fact Pandora wasn't littered with stupid bloody ad's like it is on iOS.

      • How do you copy pre-made playlists?

    • Spotify is great on Windows phone as I assume it would be on other phone operating systems. Syncing with Windows devices works fine, haven't messed about with iTunes but thankfully I never went down that path.

  • Have a Lumia 930 in my household (Previous Nokia flagship phone). Bought on the assumption that Nokia made great camera. I couldn't be more wrong.

    • The Nokia 1520 has the same camera as the 930 so you might have had a dud. The camera for a three year old unit was amazing. My boss had the 930 and took some amazing photos with it. Only issue was no expansion on the 930 compared to the 1520.
      http://techgeek.com.au/2014/07/15/nokia-lumia-930-review-bes…

      • I imagine the 930's camera is great for landscape photography in broad daylight. When it comes to dimly lit indoor, the performance is quite bad.

Camera app and AF feels sluggish, resulting in a lot of missed shots when photographing fast moving pets and kids.

  • Did you know that if you also add something like their top of the line Surface Book ($5199), the 10REWARDS code also applies to both items?

  • Both models out of stock. Live chat could not give any information when stock will be replenished.
