Spintel NBN Plans 50/20 $75 100/40 $85 1000GB/M

51

After getting FTTN and upgrading my modem and checking my internal wiring I've accepted that my max attainable rate is 50/25 so I've been looking at cheaper options than the current 100/40 plan I'm on.

The cheapest and most appealing plan I could find is through Spintel. Both have 1000GB downloads per month and uploads aren't counted (good for those of us with Plex servers…)

If you hate spintel for whatever reason you can use their prices to price match with the ISPs who do that :)

Month-to-month plans have a setup fee of $49. 12 month contract is free setup. 24 month contract gives you $100 credit to your account.

Hope it helps someone :)

    SpinTel??
    Thanks, but no thanks.

    • Just pricematch their price/inclusions…

A friend recommended them to me, so I signed up. After I signed up I started having problems (speed issues etc). Call their tech support, no answer (from a person) left message for call back and no call back. Called again 2 days later and tried holding, left message after 45mins, 7 days later, same dealio. Went to their facebook page to try and shame them into assisting me, there was not a positive comment from any of their subscribers on the facebook page. This was 2 weeks in now, and still pathetic speeds, I had maximum speed plan 100/40 but was getting 40ms ping, 99mbs download .012mbps upload. The importance of upload speed was suddenly obvious to me, I thought it was alllll about the downloads, way wrong. Anyway, called to cancel, then the war started over cancellation fees, they wanted me to pay cancellation fee, another fee that was waived for connection as I had signed up for 12months, and then another months fees as you need to give 30days notice to cancel. Told them if I saw those charges on my credit card I would be going to the ombudsman. They ended up calling me back and letting me know they'd waive all fees. Then sent me a satisfaction survey, I normally ignore these but I went to town. Anyway I was connected with iinet with 80mbsdown/40mbsup and 4ms ping 3 days later. Doesn't take much googling to find bad spintel stories. Unfortunately for me, I didn't go looking for them prior to signing up.

    • Yeah, I'm getting that idea haha they seem to have the best price/inclusions in the market for 50/20 so it's a great plan to price match

Btw I have a mate on spintel NBN and he hasn't had any problems with speed/reliability

      • I've got 2x separate accounts with SpinTel. One is ADSL (for the workplace), the other is NBN (for home). I find their service and support to be exceptional.

The only thing that might be a deal breaker for some is that they do not have 24 hour support. When I first had the NBN set up a month or so ago, something went wrong at about 9pm - the help desk closed at 8pm. So, I had to go online (I used my phone data) and submit a call back request - they called back at 8am on the dot the next day and fixed the error.

        Their support office hours are:
        https://www.spintel.net.au/contact
        8:00am to 8:00pm weekdays
9:00am to 5:00pm weekends and public holidays
(All times are Australian Eastern Daylight Time)

  • Mention download limit in title.

  • What is the general consensus for best provider for a 50mbps plan on FTTN on month-to-month?

    • +2

Not sure it's the consensus, but I'm finding Skymesh to be pretty good for the price on a 100/40 plan.

The best will depend on your needs and budget but. Having unmetered Netflix on Skymesh is a great bonus for me, and as I run CrashPlan backups having stacks of off preak data is awesome too. For others some of those perks might be meaningless.

SkyMesh, Aussie BroadBand, and NuScope offer the best IMO 50Mbps services.

For 100Mbit I am with TPG on FTTN Unlimited Plan and sync at full speed and can max out my connection and time of the day or night. Not everyone has great experiences with TPG but in all the years I have been with them on ADSL2+ and now FTTN I have never had any speed issues. YMMV.

        • Thanks. I'll check them out

      • Thanks guys ;)

  • Not really related to the deal, but just wondering what medium you've been connected to for the nbn to only get a maximum attainable rate of that?

I'm still waiting for build to commence in my area, but I'm hearing a lot of horror stories of congestion and terrible speeds on the nbn.

    • +1

FTTN. It's not so bad. I can have a few people remotely streaming from my Plex server and it's fine. Currently with Exetel who I'm happy with but they don't offer 50/20 plans so I have to look elsewhere

      • Yeah 50/25 is still good (considering I'm currently on 2/0.5 with adsl). But the hype of everyone getting massive speeds when nbn was first announced is the let down. In another 15 years 50/25 is going to be way too slow, while the people on fttp will be expierencing gigabit speeds.

I'm in a telstra cable area, so I'm hoping coaxial will be alright. I think I'd prefer fttdp (the replacement that optus cable areas are getting) and then I'd just pay the extra to run fibre into the house.

Would never go back to them, had unlimited adsl2 back in the day, had major customer service problems and also cut because I was excessively downloading on a unlimited plan.
    NEVER AGAIN.
Tpg is still the best value as I still get 13/1300 numbers included..and no contract.

  • I m using TPG unlimited plan - the speed is very slow, Any unlimited plan better than TPG?

    • What speed we talking about?

    • Slow? Jesus, mine hits upwards of 95Mbps constantly and consistently. But I am on NBN.

  • If you're just downloading a couple of shows and movies a week and streaming HD Netflix for a couple of hours a day is there any reason to go unlimited over 1TB (1000GB)?

    • +1

      No

      • +2

In fact the opposite, it is better to stay on the limited plan if it suits. Unlimited ISPs will have many users downloading high traffic volumes, slowing down your share of the backhaul links. Capped quotas are more likely to have less congestion.

  • How do you have FTTN, but a max attainable rate of 50/25? Doesn't make much sense. By wiring do you mean your local network?

    • +1

FTTN degrades as you get further from the node, like DSL. OP is likely several hundred metres from the green node box. FTTN "guarantees" only 25Mbps.

      • Oh, right. Got confused there. FTTN is the bad one, its FTTH thats wouldn't suffer from wiring issues. Carry on

      • @mskeggs FTTN only guarantees 12mbs :)

    • Yeah, about 700m from the node here. It's strange that they have fazed out 50/20 plans when they will become more financially viable given max rate/cost

      • Totally agree. So unfair that we'd have to pay for 100/40mbps in order to be able to receive half that speed. I'm in the same position. Exetel only offers 50/20 on business plans. They say it's because of their wholesaler.

        • However with Exetel you will have speed issues with most NBN plans going by posts over on WP. Seems they oversubscribe and don't increase CVC/Bandwidth.

        • @Spizz: never had any problems with speeds w/ Exetel. I max out at all times

        • +1
        • @Spizz: you're 100% right! Sorry. Apparently that was a backhaul issue. We were a trial FTTN area and they undercompensated for demand. On top of that torrents were obviously depriorotised because they crawled. I obviously have a short memory! They've been great for the last hmmm long time anyway.

  • OP do you know which ISPs price match?

    • +1

      Skymesh do.

  • -1
  • Avoid - as soon as Skymesh comes to 3011 I'm jumping off - speeds are horrendous and consistency the major issue.

In reference to the deal - not bad, better than I currently pay…. 50/25 for $80 and and only 500gb

1tb can be had in a week or so these days, unlimited is where it is at. NBN is a travesty if you are limited by quota.

    • +1

How do u go through 1TB in a week? I download movies/shows than I can watch and the kids have Foxtel go and Netflix on on the reg?! Also backup all our photos, Dropbox, etc and don't even come close. Am I missing something?

      • +1

well ok abit of an exaggeration, the last few months i went through 3tb a month and I am on adsl2+ , pc is on 24hrs a day..

    • What in the hell are you doing with your internet.

    • +1

A week!? I'm using about 300-400gb a month and consider myself to be a somewhat heavy user, I can't even comprehend 1TB in a week. Wow.

  • -1

    What a joke - 50/25.
