ALDI Universal Travel Adaptor Kit $19.99

970

Saw this on Aldi's site

Looks like a good little kit for the price considering a normal plug charger costs $20 and this thing allows 2 AU plugs plus 4 USB devices.

Thought Id share, think this will come in handy for my biz trip at end of the month :).

Would like to know if the USBs are 1A or 2A charge

    • +4

I bought it last year. USB were 1A and charging was slow as snail. Also there were 4 plugs and 2 USbs. May be faulty piece. Returned it back.

      • +5

Most USB chargers designed like this are 2A shared between all four plugs. This post states that the max is 3.1A according to the instruction manual.

I'd suggest either TronSmart or BlitzWolf chargers with a detachable cord which support QC2.0/QC3.0.

As purely a double adaptor it is expensive!

        • +1

Agree with this - get a TronSmart or BlitzWolf.

I first had one and then picked up more during the various sales that pop up - keep one in my travel kit permanently now as I travel often for work. The one in my travel kit has an EU plug as that is the most common plug I need when I travel. I also cut the cable down so it's not as bulky to carry too.

I find these more useful as you can keep it plugged in on your desk and use it all the time and then just throw it in the bag when you travel.

When they are on sale I always grab a few to keep as gifts and people love them.

The only advantage of the powerboard is for plugging in devices with an AU socket; however, I travel often and have never needed something like that. Most hotels now have universal sockets and everything charges via USB - the only thing I need to plug in is my laptop.

        • +2

Had great experience with TronSmart charger from a previous deal

    • 3.1A total

  • +6

Not universal - does not work on LV-426.

    • +8

Nuke it from orbit, it's the only way to be sure.

    • +5

      Game over man. GAME OVER.

      • They mostly come at night…mostly.

  • Can this be used in the US?

    • +1

not sure will have to find out on Wednesday, it would need some form of transformer. It might come with the USA plug and say for use with multi voltage devices like laptops and phone chargers etc. wish Aldi put better description info.

      • +3

they should make every product in the world multi-voltage i rekon

        • +1

@0p: but as they said, they should make every product multi voltage.

        • +2

Someone emerged from the wrong side of their bridge this morning.

        • @0p: I realise that maybe you just felt like being angry today, but most larger devices (at least a much larger proportion than 10-15 years ago) will accept anything in the range of about 110 to 250 volts.Have a look at your laptop charger.

        • Yep - I don't buy charges/adapters these days if they are not multi-voltage.

        • +2

Forgive me guys it was ~3am…

        • @0p: LOL forgiven champ!

I have one from last year and yes it can, although make sure your appliance works on 110V. Note that you can't use it in Japan because the plug comes with the round ground plug which is not detachable.

      • The labelling on the underside of the unit says:

"Input 240v ~50hz, 740w max", so there's the possibility that the power supply for the USB charger might not take like 110v.

But yes, your mains appliance would need to be able to operate on 100-120v to be able to safely use this power board.

I bought one of these last year but never got around to using it. I'm about to take another trip to HK, and I've only just discovered that there is no actual HK/UK plug supplied in the package I got - type G with the chunky rectangular pins, despite the correct plug being mentioned and pictured on the packaging. Spewing.

        http://www.iec.ch/worldplugs/typeG.htm

        • There is a uk plug supplied. Well kind of. The First One I bought didn't have it. Took it back for a refund as the UK plug is important to me. All the versions at that store the same. Then by chance at another store same item had the uk plug. So bought that one. Odd as this was all in the same week.

      • Thanks for the Japan info. I was thinking of getting. It for the Japan trip.

  • +1

Looks goodi do need one but need faster USB charging.

    • +2

Takes original phone charger problem solved still on power plug available for laptop

  • +3

if you want to use this for a trip overseas and only need usb charging for your phones and tablets… makes more sense to buy one of those 5 port QC2 or QC3 chargers that pops up here regularly. They have a standard figure 8 socket on the back and it would be easy to buy a cable to suit the country you are going to. Probably easiest to buy it with either a US or UK plug and buy the australian figure 8 cable locally.

Add $10 to get power cube

    • -1

      from?

    • powercube? does that come with all the international plug adaptors too or just a 4 plug 2 usb port power brick

      • I think it only comes with Aussie plug. Not sure where to get an international adaptor.

        • +1

the whole point of this post is its a travel adaptor ;)

        • @bargainz10:

I saw a few ebay stores are selling the adaptor for 20 bux each :(

        • +2

          @arctan:

Hence why I posted this deal as its good value for the adapter heads

    Second the powercube

    • Where to buy and which brand? I am travelling soon so I would like to get one with fast usb charging power cube.

    • I bought this last year from Aldi. I ended up getting the powercube with the 4AC sockets/2 USB 2.1A sockets for travelling. All you need is an adapter for the plug. Under AUD30 from Scorptec. There is also a powercube model that uses adapters with an IEC plug but I have only seen this on ebay/Aliexpress.

I Third the power glove, it's baaaaaaad

Anyone know where I can find a good travel adaptor with fast USB charging sockets? Plan to go to Asian countries.

    • Want to know answer to this to! Ebay seems to have plenty between $20-30 that have faster USB charging. i.e. 2A

      • Most of them are having 2.1A combined USB output on charging which is not that great if you have more than one devices to charge at same time with USB charging. I am looking at Power Cube as it looks like having 5A as combined output.

        • Yeah i was looking at those too. I assume the cord is removable? Still leaves without the universal adapter part, but i guess any cheapo one of those will work once you have the cube. Wasn't able to determine if each USB port is 2.1a though.

        • @Xizor:
Any idea where to find those cheap adaptor for Asia?

        • All over ebay, alliexpress etc. from china very cheap. just don't mix up which socket if getting specific one. Alternatively you can get them in most misc junk stores too but more $. Often in asian countries, heck even USA, there is more than 1 socket type. So universal is always preferable IMO.

        • +1

          @Xizor:
No the cord is not removable. Note there are a few models of the Power Cube, some have cords, some have USB, etc

    • +1

when I did KL, Sing, HK 3 years ago I used an ac adapter that came with one of my china droids that had the basic 2 round prongs (like europe and many asian countries).

bought a 30cent adapter which converted from aus/prong —>US plug adapter.

if there wasn't round prongs then it would be US plug type.

Also used the same adapter in Europe 2 years ago and in Hawaii march and Japan in June

a charger like this would be fine
and the adapter prong to US plug adapter

      • -1

Do they sell any Asian adaptor like the one in first link? Would be keen to buy one if aliexpress sells one.

        • +1

          it's aliexpress…..

  • +2

Dunno where you could get one in australia but…

    This one is amazing

    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KC7I2GU/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_tt…

Works anywhere has 2x 3.1a usb

  • +1

Hmm. I just take the normal adaptor plug and a 4 plug aussie powerboard and use my local usb and other chargers….am i missing something?

    • +1

Nope, that's what I do as well. I even fitted a few powerboards with different plugs so I can ditch the universal adapter if I'm only visiting one country.

  • +6

I normally just use one of those $1 ebay international plugs, then take a 6 port powerboard with me. All under $5.

    • Got a recommendation? There's a billion, and many of them are terrible! (Don't plug in well, spark).

      • +1

Nope, just cross your fingers and toes before you click the purchase button.

  • I bought this last time and used it on a recent euro Holiday. Awesome! Could have my phone, tablet and laptop all charging on the one converted plug. Nothing much else to say. Nice bag to keep stored away when not in use.

  • +1

I bought this last year. Used it twice then suddenly stopped working. Easy to return under warranty though.

  • +1

Will it work in the northern part of Tajikistan which has mains electricity of 175V DC from bare wires dangling out of the wall?

    • +8

Aldi says that no-one has ever returned from Tajikistan complaining that it didn't work :)

  • +1

Absolute rubbish device. Bought 2 last year, both crapped out within a month.

  • Works perfectly. I have had this for over 12 months. I have used this on a cruise ship and also in the USA a few weeks ago. Worked great!

  • I bought this for going back to Uk for a holiday last year, nice uk plug on the box and when I got there no such plug included had US , asia and another 2 pin one… sent them a message and they mailed one out to me came just after i got back.. which was handy. So not sure if it works or not :-)
