Wow, iPad Mini 2 price drops twice in a row.

    • +10

Well it is three years old.

      • +3

Wow - over 3 years ago I bought a refurbished one for only $1 more.
        $299 now with ugly box
Edit: oh wait this is 32GB. Move along…

      • Its not a bad tablet for the price. But it isn't as zippy as it use to be.

        • +10

My one be has always really zippy. Right up until the latest IOS 10 update. Now its become very laggy. Apples way of saying, buy a new one.

        • +1

          @pufffdragon: Pretty much

        • +4

          @pufffdragon:

Apple's way of saying, jump to Android =p

        • +2

@pufffdragon: that's why I turned off auto updates. I'm still using a 6 y.o ipod touch with no problems.

        • @Al Kider: I was a bit late in being able to roll back to IOS 9. That was only for a limited time I hear. A part of me hopes the next update will improve it, but knowing Apple, it will probably just kill it.

        • @pufffdragon:

Mines also a bit slow but very usable still. One of the best pieces of tech I've bought.

        • @pufffdragon:

is ios 10 worth upgrading to? I have iPad Pro. Out of the box it is on iOS 9. Should I keep it on 9? If it slows down your device, I don't want to upgrade.

        • @lostn: Wasn't that worth the upgrade. They have taken away the "swipe to unlock your iPad" Feature. Now you have to press the home button every time to unlock. You either love it or hate it.

Yours is a newer version so I doubt you would have issues with an upgrade. I can only speak for the mini 2. Mine still runs ok, but have definitely noticed lag with YouTube and gumtree apps and some games.

        • @pufffdragon: Wow. That is a baffling change. I happen to hate physical buttons and would rather touch the screen. If you have a smart cover that turns the screen on when you flip the cover, you still need to press the home button?

Based on your performance loss, this definitely sounds like planned obsolescence. iOS seems to be getting heavier and heavier with each new release. On Android, everyone wants the new updates, and people are sad when their device is not getting it.

        • @lostn: Yup you need to press that home button now. I think the newer ones with the fingerprint button has an option to just touch the home button, not click it. Either way you have to use the home button.

        • @pufffdragon: Yeah me too, I hate the new upgrades to my iPad Air 2. Hate that Home button! I've learnt the hard way that "upgrades" are often downers…

        • +1

@lostn: You can change the option on accessibility to make it unlock with Touch ID without pressing the button. You still have to press the button for Passcode promt, but it's better than nothing.

It's General -> Accessibility -> Home Button -> Rest Finger to Open. It was the first thing I changed when I started using iOS 10.

        • @Al Kider: I really wish I had done this with my iPhone 6. So laggy now compared to iOS 8 & 9

        • @janxspirit: don't feel too bad. It's by apple's design, to trick you into buying a newer one.

    • +1

My wife has one, it's starting to show it's age, even the fours processor is a few generations old so I wouldn't recommend.

  • iPad Mini 2 32GB $318

    another price drop ?

that would make it $302.10 if you're quick enough at OW….

  • The headphones show up as $38 in my shopping cart.

  • I got excited thinking about stacking this with my $100 HN AMEX credit and then read the fine print saying it excludes Apple products :-(

    • I was thinking the same and almost hit the button read the terms . WTF
How do they know what I've bought ??

    • +1

How would AMEX know that you purchased an Apple product?

      • Has anyone tried ??

        • +3

I bought this morning and got amex email back straight away

        • +2

          Yes. It works.

        • @cooni: Was this targeted? I dont have it in my offer list.

        • I did about a year ago and the credit was issued

        • Ignore this comment!

    • +2

Don't worry about T&Cs you'll get the $100 credit as reported multiple times in the relevant thread

    • Works fine. I did not even read the fine print!

    • if the person at checkout doesn't stop you then you'll get the cashback.

got a friend you bought an iphone 7 and got $300 cashback using 3x AMEX cards.

    • Just bought one and got $100 credit confirmation straight away.

  • Yay. Going to use Amex deal to replace my child's smashed iPad mini. Was $347, then $337 yesterday and now dropped agai today. Amex says excludes Apple and gift cards, but they have no way of knowing what was purchased.

    • +5

dropped again today - your child's iPad or the price?

      • +5

        Or…the child?

        • Probably that.

    • you'd save a lot more money if your kid learned to look after their expensive gadgets :\

is it just the screen that got smashed or the whole unit?
you can buy replacement screen kits off ebay/aliexpress for peanuts compared to buying a new one.

      • Screens really smashed and squishy in one corner. DIY repair scared me as said I needed to use a heat gun and blade to melt glue. It's the original mini 1 so pretty old. Thought better to pay $219 with Amex deal, sell the old one for parts for $50 (what repair shop offered me) than pay for a repair.

        • hairdryer's fine :)

        • @tdw: Okay, thats less scary. I'm not sure if we own a heat gun, but was imaging accidently setting it on fire. Think I'll give it a go. Thanks heaps.

        • @ChickenLittle: heat gun's overkill anyway for electronic devices

  • Has anyone got a $25 off code from the newsletter signup they won't use?

    • Thought those were long gone?

      • And this is HN not TGG?

        • Harvey Norman once did it too.

  • Can anyone recommend the Panasonic headphones as decent noise cancelling? For the price I may just wing it; no others will come close at the price….

    • +1

The noise cancelling is so marginal you probably won't notice that it's turned on.

I paid 35 dollars for mine and thought it was a fair price but if I had to pay 58 dollars I'd get buyers remorse.

The sound quality though is decent, although for around a hundred dollars you could buy a pair that is far more comfortable to wear.

      • I have about $40 on a HN gift card to use and leave to travel in 3 weeks so I'm kind of limited with choices and something that is on sale

        • +1

Get a decent closed pair of headphones or some iems. $40 iems would go further than any $40 closed headphones at this price point.

  • iPad ordered . Got email from Amex straight away
Now to of load 2 iPads with smashed screens I have already replaced with ebay screens and are smashed again already . Parenting = all fun and smashed iPads .

    • +4

Parenting = all fun of saving your money and buying a book.

      • +1

        Well said,arsenal1!

      • -3

        This isn't 1995 anymore.

      • -1

Not sure if you have noticed but you can read on IPads . But then I am sure you are the recipient of the ozbargain parent of the day award today well done

Life is about balance people !

        • +4

Thanks for the Award nomination. But You’re doing yourself an injustice. Surely this Award should go to the Parent dumb enough to constantly replace a child’s smashed IPad screen.

      • +1

Books aren't cheap with the rate my kids go through them…but it does have an added benefit of saving on gym membership just carrying them (now with my ozbargain hat on) 😀

        • Go to the library problem solved

    • Buy one of those tough cases designed to survive drops. They make these for kids. Even protects the screen,

      • The likelihood of damaging any item is proportional to any preventative measures you have in place…

        • No way.

        • @lostn: …yeah maybe not, but sounds good in theory!

  • Ok thanks guys I've placed the order and got the email. It says something about if the purchase meets the offer terms I'll receive the credit in 5 days so fingers crossed it comes through :-)

  • What do you guys reckon - can the ipad be found cheaper on boxing day ?

    • I'd be waiting for the (long overdue) iPad refresh. The specs are far too ancient (like most of Apples hardware atm unfortunately). Tim Cook needs to step down immediately.

    • If you have 28 degrees credit card with purchase protection you can buy now and claim the difference back if the price drops. Maybe some other credit cards have the same thing?

      • My amex also has a price protection too

        • does anyone know if JB HiFi would refund the $50 difference they now have on an Oppo phone I bought there 13 days ago? (not bought on 28 Degrees or AMEX)

  • Bluray player any good?

  • Thanks OP.
Tried pricematching Target last night with the iPad, but they weren't up for it.
Pricematched OW earlier, saved me some more money.

  • no idea why the 16gb ipad mini 2 wifi only is more expensive than 32gb one.

    http://www.harveynorman.com.au/apple-ipad-mini-2-wi-fi-16gb-…

  • +1

The iPad mini 2 is too old, 300 dollars is too much for it. I'm gonna wait until a Mini 4 deal comes. They are bound to be within 350 in a few months.

    • +1

yeah you're right, i remember there was a sale for the ipad mini 16gb with the minion bundle for $200 at big w a couple of years ago

    • +1

Mini 4 is 2 years newer but only 1 generation newer. Apple decided to add a finger print scanner to the Mini 2, keep everything else the same, and call it Mini 3, a year later. And also charge more.

  • Just went to OW (highpoint) to try to price beat. They said Apple products are excluded and wont price beat. Nothing is said in the T&C. the guy tried to sell me an ipad air instead. I said nah. wonder if this is the case for other OW stores.

    • Report him to head office.

    • I got it price matched at officeworks Keysborough. $302.10. No hassle at all. Walk in ask for stock mentioned hardly normal, got out.

    • As far as I know there are no exclusions, I would speak to OW Facebook and they will look into it for you :)

      • Just messaged OW facebook and you guys are correct, no exclusions. Anyway, the missus was with me and wanted it so badly that we just went to HN and got one instead.

    • i called the OW 1300 number and the customer representative was happy to do the price beat for the ipad mini 2 and deliver for free to my nearest store. I didn't take up the offer because I needed to cancel my previous ipad order with myer. So said I will call back later. The second time (10 mins later) I called the OW 1300 number another woman replied that the HN block out sale is excluded and said I should go read the T&Cs. I said some woman already said yes, how can that be excluded, she insisted that it is excluded. I got too angry and hung up. I then called my local OW store and got the price beat no problems, and luckily got the last one in store.
OW people like to make up their own exclusions, so I suggest keep trying until you get one who will say yes.

  • +3

Just FYI, Called Harvey Norman, they refunded the differences for the ipad mini2 i bought 2 weeks ago

  • Since the last couple orders from HN. After placing the online orders always being reviewed. Is this normal?
Or am I being blacklisted or under watchlist?

    • +2

maybe they look at your nickname and think there's a chance the order has been dduupplliiccaatteedd

      • +1

        Lolll. Probably…
But don't think they limit how many I want to buy

  • The iPad mini 4 is much better than the 2;

-the 2 runs quite hot after a few hours of use powering the retina screen whereas the 4 is cool as a cucumber
    - iPad refresh expected in March
    - the 4 was recently on sale in US Black Friday sales for US$224 while the Air 2 was US$274

    • I did look at the Ipad mini 4 before buying the ipad mini2 32Gb, but it was more than $100 difference so not really worth it then. and as for US 'Black Friday' sales - there would've been a the issue of shipping and getting stock before US people did which is pretty unlikely. so all up, the costs outweigh the product specs. No use waiting for a few months down the track, as I needed it for Kids BYO ipad device for school.

  • Looks like the Ipad comes with $30 Giftcard. Is it Isa prepaid or eftpos?
Well the bonus $30 hn Giftcard appear on my email order.

  • -3

i bought an ipad mini 2 - 32GB just at the beginning of last month for my son, at $348. Now it's dropped! See! I knew they were going to drop the price within a few weeks away. anyways, this just goes to show how Apple are only interested in dictating prices where the sheep people want to buy their products. What a greedy corporation!

    • +1

That's what companies do? Apple simply gets away with it more because they have more monopolistic power over the market.

    • -4

In all honesty, I don't know why people even bother with apple. For the same amount or less, you can get an android tablet with much more impressive specs.

And this even applies to their phones. Apple to me = sheep

      • +2

And this even applies to their phones. Apple to me = sheep

Better than the pushy Android users always trying to convince others that they're in the best ecosystem, like some low-rent Jehovah's Witness.

      • +3

In all honesty, I don't know why people even bother recommending Android in Apple threads. Sheeple have made up their mind, so why bother?
        Sent from my iPad.

        • Haha @ Sent from my iPad, nice

        • lollll I've had all kinds of phones and IMO the iPhone rules!
