[Used] Microsoft Surface Pro 3 1631 Core i5 4300U 1.9GHz 4GB 128GB + Keyboard + Pen + Case $699 + Shipping @Reboot IT

I think this is good value for an used Surface Pro 3 with decent configuration. Comes with keyboard, Pen and case too. Not using the word refurbished as they don't really do actual refurbishing.

From comments from previous deals their used Surface Pro 3s are like new. However it may not always be the case, so be prepared for a nasty surprise as well. Here are specs from the description on the website.

12” ClearType Full HD Plus display
2160 x 1440 resolution
Multi-touch
4th Generatioin Intel Core i5 4300U 1.9GHz

90 day warranty

NOTE: INCLUDES KEYBOARD, STYLUS PEN, TARGUS FOLIO WRAP CASE & LAPTOP BAG!

Back in stock after couple of months and may sell out soon. I waited for the stock for a while and finally pulled the trigger on Lenovo miix 700 couple of weeks back.

I'd be concerned over the battery … after owning a few, we noticed that at about the 12 month point the battery life is nowhere near that of new (to be expected). They are always on and off charge but we do treat them normally. And with all portable devices, their batteries seem deteriorate quickly. There are no user serviceable parts, it isn't like buying a replacement. https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Microsoft+Surface+Pro+3+Battery…

    • That's a known problem with the sp3 and ms is trying to fix this. It's not the actual battery that's the problem but some software related issues

      • Yep, a mate of mine updated his Surface and his battery life has sucked ever since. And all of MS fixes haven't worked.

He loves his machine but this battery issue has severely curtailed his use of it.

Just something to be aware of.

      • That's a known problem with the sp3

OK but old batteries will die regardless of any issues.

        • Sure, I have still got a surface pro 1 which still has great battery life

    Caution: 90 day warranty

I highly recommend extensively testing the batteries yourself if you buy this, as some batches of the SP3 have LG made batteries which to date, has not been fixed (firmware or hardware or otherwise).

Surfaces with the Simplo made batteries have been patched with a firmware and are OK, but those with LG batteries continue to have power related issues.

    Official word from MS is

“We are aware of a battery issue that is affecting a limited number of Surface Pro 3 users,"

"Our team is actively looking in to the issue to determine the cause and identify a fix. We will post an update as soon as we have more information to share. We also recognize the possibility that some customers might have heard conflicting information about in- and out-of-warranty repairs and replacements. "

    • In that case selling the LG ones would be in breach of the ACL…

In that case selling the LG ones would be in breach of the ACL…

What specific part of the ACL does it breach?

        • The best of a tablet

Weighing in at 1.76 lbs and only 9.1mm thin with up to 9 hours of battery life#

Hahahaha. I love it when they cut and paste the description from the MS website, but not the footnotes.

        • -1

What specific part of the ACL does it breach?

I don't know the specific section but obviously selling a tablet with a battery that lasts half as long as its supposed to makes it not for for purpose (unless the seller makes it clear that the product comes with this 'feature.')

There is no specific section nor does the battery issue make it not fit for purpose under the ACL. Microsoft have stated that this affects a very small number of devices with early failure and they are still looking into the issue. Every manufacturer has issues with hardware and some models are better then others but if you look online there are not that many people having problems.

If you tablet fails however with a failed battery you could argue that under the ACL it should have been expected to last for x years but a reduction in battery life is not going to get you anywhere especially when there are so many variables.

        • -1

          There is no specific section

Of course there is - the ACL would be practically useless without this!

nor does the battery issue make it not fit for purpose under the ACL.

So getting eg. 'half' a battery is fine on an electronic device?

Microsoft have stated that this affects a very small number of devices with early failure and they are still looking into the issue.

It doesn't matter if it affects 1 or 1 million - if the supplied tablet is affected by this known issue, the failure rate is 100%.

a reduction in battery life is not going to get you anywhere especially when there are so many variables.

A known but undisclosed reduction in battery capacity at the time of sale = not fit for purpose.

          Of course there is.

Yet you couldn't quote it… because it doesn't exist. The ACL is useless.

So getting eg. 'half' a battery is fine on an electronic device?

The battery works fine for most people, some suffer a failure after warranty earlier then others but this applies to all products.

It doesn't matter if it affects 1 or 1 million - if the supplied tablet is affected by this known issue, the failure rate is 100%.

Every tablet will fail at some point. Some from known faults, some from unknown faults and some from external faults.

A known but undisclosed reduction in battery capacity at the time of sale = not fit for purpose.

It wasn't known at the time of sale nor did it affect the battery capacity at the time of sale.

          Yet you couldn't quote it

Couldn't be bothered (finding and) quoting it.

          because it doesn't exist.

So the ACL has nothing to say about selling goods that do no fit their stated specification? Wow, you'd think they would have fixed that up by now!

some suffer a failure after warranty earlier then others but this applies to all products.

Which is why I haven't been talking about that scenario.

Which is why I am talking about this scenario.

It wasn't known at the time of sale nor did it affect the battery capacity at the time of sale.

          Hugh? The problem is known.

Couldn't be bothered (finding and) quoting it.

Because it doesn't exist. The ACL is pretty much worthless as it's not easily or cheaply enforceable.

So the ACL has nothing to say about selling goods that do no fit their stated specification? Wow, you'd think they would have fixed that up by now!

When did the LG problems start coming to light? In the last few months after the fix was released for the simplo batteries.

Which is why I haven't been talking about that scenario.
Which is why I am talking about this scenario.

You said that Microsoft selling the Surface Pro 3 with LG batteries would be a breach of the ACL but it's not.

          Hugh? The problem is known.

After manufacturing of the Surface Pro 3 ceased.

        • @Maverick-au: OK, I thought you may be trolling but now I realise you're just not understanding.
My original comment is correct - you may not care about getting ripped off by a business, but I and many others would.

Are you talking about the seller of the used tablets Reboot IT? If so the ACL still doesn't apply and they offer a 90 day warranty so if the problem is there it will be rectified. Microsoft will release a fix for this problem soon as they're now aware of it.

  • BatteryBar should show how bad the battery damage is.

  • +1

So would bite if this had a 1 year warranty

    • +1

You can purchase 12 months additional warranty for $50. I did that just for a piece of mind.
I've had the exact same refurbished SP3 from RebootIT since July this year. So far so good.
The only downside is it comes with Windows 8.1 Pro and I think the deadline to upgrade to Windows 10 has passed.
Otherwise, it is a seriously versatile machine. Small, light and fast.

      • +1

I'm 99% sure you can still upgrade to Windows 10 for free through their "accessibilty" (google it) loophole.

I bought one of these 2-3 months ago (without the keyboard, grrr) and this was after the official deadline for "free" Win 10 upgrades. But it worked for me

      • +2

go to the microsoft download site for the surface 3 pro image and you can download the win10 image which has usage rights for this. You just need a valid serial number from the surface 3 to download it.

      • 50 extra puts it at 2nd hand ebay price, not that great

        • +2

Still better surely? You get warranty which a second hand eBay one wouldn't include

i.e. Used one on eBay without warranty vs Used one with warranty.

          Seems pretty clear to me.

  • Seem like only have 3 units available.

  • -4

Sorry 700 bucks to buy a 3 year old tablet. Oh and it's used.

    Upvoters need their heads read.

    • +1

You don't seem to know much about it. It's not a tablet like the nexus 7 or similar. It's a proper computer which can replace a desktop in most cases

    • +2

Cheapest used on EBay is $750 with no keyboard and a broken pen.

Not the right device for me, but I can see value in the deal.

      • Cheapest on ebay often isn't the best indication. Items going at reasonable prices get snapped up quickly, the ones remaining are the items people aren't willing to pay for at that price.

To a degree I agree with Diji, it's pretty old tech, refurbished and costs more than it did last time it was ozbargain (4 months ago).

        • +1

NOTE: INCLUDES KEYBOARD, STYLUS PEN, TARGUS FOLIO WRAP CASE & LAPTOP BAG!

Worth a bit more than 50 bucks I'd say!

And it's only the previous generation, and many would say more reliable than the current one anyway (assuming battery is right brand.)

    • +2

Can you provide a link to a similar spec'ed device for cheaper price? Or a better spec'ed device for same price?

  • +1

I bought one. I've been scouring Gumtree for a good deal for a couple of weeks now. this was around what i wanted to pay anyway and i got the 12 month warranty.

  • +3

My surface pro 3 arrived yesterday. its in perfect condition, the pen looks like it was never used, the case looks expensive and the keyboard has backlit key which was a great surprise.

The thing is faster than i expected, I'm very happy with the purchase.

  • +1

Received mine last week too. Upgraded to Windows 10 as well and is in great condition. Battery wear is around 3% and accessories were in perfect condition too.

I also scored a docking station for $100 from them too. Just called to ask.

  • I've bought one from them, had some issues, (rotating problems) they are not good to deal with. Make you spend hours and hours reinstalling windows, downloading different versions before acknowledging the problem.
