I've got this and the Wemo from Belkin. Both are terrible but the dlink even more so. Took me an hour to join wifi, the app completely forgets the switch all the time. I have a raspberry pi controlling it so it's not so much an issue. But for the average person avoid these like the plague.

    • +2

Got a few Belkins myself and yeah setup can be seemingly impossible.. The last few updates to the app have helped with the reliability.

      • +2

I use quite a few weemo's and never had an issue with any of them.

I have them tied in with IFTTT and alexa and do some pretty advanced home automation and they just work. I was thinking of grabbing some Dlinks as well to complete my house setup so every entertainment area can be automated.

        • I am very happy with my Xmas tree lights setup using the wemo switch and motion.
It is very reliable especially with the recent updates.
One issue is that I'm not able to create a rule on my android, however my partner's iPhone can.

    • Thank you! I keep hearing about how bad Wemo is. What a complete shame.
Why can't someone get these damn things right? You know Wemo needs to talk to a server on the goddamn internet? It's "DRM'd" basically - if they ever go down or pull the service, you're S.O.L

  • Reviews on JB website are distinctly discouraging. Even taken with a grain or twelve of salt, I don't think that I want to go there…

  • I'm going to risk it and buy a couple for the garden lights. Set up the schedule and forget they're there. For $17 each, can't go too wrong I hope!

    • problem is if you use IFTTT to schedule, because the app forgets them so does IFTTT. The only reason mine work on a schedule is because a python script is locally talking to them and turning them on and off.

  • Based on JB reviews, and my experience with my WeMo stuff, I wouldn't buy these. Not sure if other brands are better but I'm seeing a common complaint.

This is the sort of thing I'm wanting to use to be able to control a power point in the garage without having to walk up to the back yard to turn it on manually. Given the poor reviews of the wifi options, are there any POE versions anyone can recommend?

    • +1

Smart plugs are not POE. POE provides power to a remote device, usually network infrastructure like a wifi point, switch or camera via the Ethernet cable.

For reliable smart plugs the RF ones controlled by a hub device or radio remote seem more reliable. I've used cheap ones from Jaycar with ninjablocks reliably for years but I'm not sure about range for your application. Only $25 for a single plug with remote from Jaycar (cat no MS6145)

I'm guessing he meant a power-line version that would send the network traffic to control the switching via the power circuitry instead of via wireless. Can't imagine such a product would exist to be honest…as it is power-line adapters are a fairly niche technology and can have their own reliability issues.

Even if such a product existed you'd still need a wireless hub or something for your mobile device to connect to in any event.

        • X-10 is a powerline protocol. It still lives on in the US but pretty much dead everywhere else.

        • They exist here though not all are x-10 compliant. I have some in a box somewhere. The master node is RF and sends signals over mains power to slave units. They work well except where units are on different circuits then it just depends. Of course none of this is POE though and I hoped by correcting the terminology he wouldn't waste his time searching for the wrong thing.

        • Thanks @smigit, that is what I meant.
I have an existing wifi network and POE to reach parts of the house where the wifi is patchy and for an old non-wifi laser printer. I doubt wifi will reach my garage reliably, but I know that the POE works there, so it must be on the same circuit as the house.
From the comments here, it sounds like I'll need to investigate the strength of the RF ranges and whether they'll reach the garage.

@newdad: Just a thought but what about options for extending your wireless network? If powerline works well between there and the house just put an access point in the garage and bridge the network over the powerline.

Alternatively you could wire in an Access Point or add some repeaters.

    • I don't think it's a wifi issue, I can fully control with my pi over wifi. It's the cloud side letting it down

      • And the problem with the cloud stuff is that they're unreliable & insecure.

I've been using Xiaomi smart home plugs for the last 12 months…..easy setup (both wifi and zigbee models), and have never missed a beat since. About $15aud a piece .

    • Well i bought a xiaomi smart power strip. I use tp link powerline adapters and one of them was plugged on this switch and wont work. Before this it was on a cheap extension board n worked without issue. I personally dont think it is reliable and definitely has power interference or resistance issue. Wont go near xiaomis now for power things

      • You can't use power-line adapters in boards with surge protections. Depending on the surge technology used, it either wont work at all or will connect a very low speed.

A cheap unprotected board won't have that problem. That said, every Ethernet over power-line manufacturer recommends you do not connect devices to power-boards if you want the most reliable connection.

    • Can you provide more info? (ie: a link to them?)
Does either of them NOT require an internet account with a 3'rd party provider? I find that concept totally broken. It should work without needing to log in to some site.

      • +1

As with all "smart" home automation products the Xiaomi plugs are "cloud based" thus require an internet connection.

There are smart plugs out there (like the ones sold by Aldi) that operate at a local netweork level. I found them unreliable, time consuming to set up, and the software extremely poor.

        • Damnit :/ why can't someone get this right?
Thanks for that. - I want something with just a web UI or something, then i could set a redirect on my router for example.

Do NOT like that whole cloud idea, nope nope nope.

  • I will echo the above comments on this. I researched these thoroughly, and every review has been pretty bad.

Wemo Insight seems to have much better reviews. There is a newer smaller version of them available in the us, so I am hoping the current AU stock will get discounted soon.

Looking for one of these for my alexa setup, so the cheap Chinese ebay version wont work either.

totally waste of money. this plug is very unstable. after pairing, the iphone app dosnt show the plug online most of the time. got 2 generic brand off ebay , works fine.

search ebay with 'mini smart wifi plug'. i used one to cobtrol my swimming pool pump. its been almost a year. still going solid. so far so good.

        • Timer-able or just wifi on off (manual?)

        • Oh and cloud account or no clud accound required?

          thanks.! :)

        • +1
        • @hamwhisperer: you may connect to plug directly without wifi router connection. that way i think you dont need to reguster an acc.

        • @sunsleepy: Thanks I've ordered 1!

        • @sunsleepy: Hey dude did you end up using the "konke" one - with the android and iphone app?

I can connect to ITS wifi but i'll be damned if I can get it to connect to mine - the round one with the flashing light on the side?

EDIT: I got it working, required a login on some dodgy light blue app not a green one.
Don't trust it on my network tho. I unplugged it in the end.

What are some good genric ones of ebay?

    • search ebay with 'mini smart wifi plug'. i used one to cobtrol my swimming pool pump. its been almost a year. still going solid. so far so good.

  • What is the idle power consumption of these units?

  • Smart Plug and Motion Sensor also available from Officeworks website for the same price. Free delivery orders > $50 in my area.

  • Price seems to have gone back up. Anyone know when it ended?

    • Looks like this deal is back on.
