480
C10AU

This wemo deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/285343 got me kind of hooked into this.
- Wemo has 1 colour only and requires a hub.
- Philips hue are like $70 per bulb, $100-200 for the starter kit and still requires a hub.
- LIFX is apparently brighter, has a better app, requires no hub and is anywhere between $20-30AUD each(well from here anyway) depending on the qty.

They seem to be going for around $75 AUD everywhere with ebay being the cheapest.

Use coupon Code C10AU for the 10% discount.

How man OzBargainers does it take to screw in a LIFX lightbulb?

  • Damn.. Pulled the trigger on whites at not much less than this…

And there is no comparison between lifx bulbs and the crap they call wemo

  • +2

These are Gen 1 but a great deal.

    • +2

      FIY
Generation 3 LIFX (A19/BR30) and LIFX + (A19/BR30) product lines are supported by Apple Homekit

      • Gen 3 is colour only and expensive. No white bulb in the current range. Annoying as they are out of stock of gen 2 white.

  • +5

Bit of info for those who might want to know about homekit and LIFX, recently LIFX announced compatibility coming to the generation 3 bulbs, which these are not. I have been researching smart lights for a while and agree that consensus is the LIFX products are actually brighter. For me, no homekit is a deal breaker but otherwise I would give these a go.

Looks like old first gen bulbs.

    • Gen 3 seems to be getting a 3.5 star average whereas the Gen 1 still has a solid 4 stars from 800 feedbacks.
      https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Dt…
Maybe there are still QC issue or software bug still require ironing out.

The philips hue seem to have a solid 4+ stars too but theyre way too expensive for me(& Gen 3) to 'try out', not sure if these are gonna be a pain in the butt to use or as great as reviews claim them out to be, I'm really looking forward to it!

      • +1

Hue is only $30 a bulb if you don't want colour which makes them the same price local after the purchase of the hub. Sure, you need to buy a hub but I don't see that as a big disadvantage given it means you can do updates to things like adding Homekit support by replacing one $80 hub instead of a dozen $30 globes.

        • hahah i already have then Wemo on order from local JB after price matching bunnings :x
Will the Philips colored bulb work with the Wemo switch thingy? I tried googling but cant find answer.

        • @Zeral: They'd only work with the Hue hub.

    • What's the pros of the HomeKit support?

      • If you are part of the apple ecosystem already, homekit support is of value because it means you can use siri and/or the 'home' app on iOS devices to manage all of your homekit devices rather than an app per product range, (although there are other smart device agrigation apps out there.)

By no means am I championing homekit as 'the' smart solution, but in my household we have apple devices including appletv which can act as a smart hub.

        • Thanks! Is it true that you'd need an Apple TV to use HomeKit's full capabilities?

        • +3

@Redwood: HomeKit is some beta right now. Often devices don't work when you tell Siri to turn them on, where as Amazon Alexa works pretty much everytime. It has no polish at all for an Apple product.

  • Are these compatible with alexa?

    • -2

Not directly, set up IFTT and you can 'Alexa trigger lounge'

      • +2

Yonomi app works better/faster than Ifttt to control LIFX from Alexa

        • I can't get Yonomi to find my Alexa

        • @thorton82: yonomi doesn't find Alexa / show it on the list of things. Instead you enable the yonomi skill via the Alexa web app. Then Alexa can send commands to yonomi to trigger events / things

      • +3
      • iFTTT sucks because you have to say trigger

    • There are two LIFX Alexa skills now. Not sure if they work with Gen 1 bulbs but they are working with my new Gen 3s.

      • +1

Yep - fully compatible. I have 12 x Gen 1 Lifx bulbs working fine with the Alexa skills on a Gen 2 Echo Dot.

  • Aren't these bulbs white light only?

    • Nah I thought so at first too but they have 3 pictures of the box in the item desciption with Item Code: BUL-11-A21B22-W

Harvey Norman has the same item code:
      http://www.harveynorman.com.au/lifx-led-smart-lightbulb-b22-…
Transform the ambience – with 16 million colours to choose from, the LIFX LED Smart Lightbulb allows you to set the mood, whatever it may be.

      • These are not colour they are the original gen 1 lights which are white only.

        • +1

You think they got popular on 'the original' by selling white only lights? :P

          They're coloured bruh

  • +1

FYI computercenter dont have stock, I tried to pick some up last week and they said they ~might~ come in this week. e27 bulbs that is

  • Thanks hope they post. Used a $20 off $100 purchase on my eBay app (unsure how I got it!) So 4X for just under $90 is a good deal.

    • Got mine today…Very quick. Will test tonight.

      • Heheheh, quick tip is to add the bulbs 1 by 1 through the app because they all use the same SSID name and may not send the wifi credentials properly.

It takes like an hr to update the firmware as well so I recommend using a pc as it also shows the % bar with all the names of all the connected bulbs.
        Step by step
        - turn on 1 light at a time and connect it to the app.
        - Put in your wifi credentials into the new light.
        - Lightbulb wifi password is lifx1234 when it asks you to connect to Lightbulb wifi.
        - After you send the wifi credentials, wait a few sec and flip the switch off and back on for it to connect to the router properly.
        - wait for the app to refresh itself and it'll appear under your WiFi's router's name.
From here you can basically start using it.

Don't do the firmware update yet until you've added all lights so you can update them all at the same time.
To add a second bulb, make sure you flip off the first bulb and repeat the steps above.

They're alot bigger than I thought and the box and presentation of it looks grouse, like opening up a new phone.
I've already used up 6 and deciding whether I should put the other 4 in the hallway and toilet…

        • Thanks forc the tips!

        • Man these things are real dogs to update! Prior to reading yourr comment I tried via phone which failed after trying overnight. So downloaded program for osx and it seemed promising, left it overnight (was taking hours for 5 bulbs but progressing) and seems to have failed. Will investigate over the weekend, but surely it cannot be that hard to do a firmware update! I guess their receive data speed is slow?

        • @bargdebarg:
From pc it takes me probably 5-10 mins per bulb after figuring out how pointless the phone app was at updating and knowing the in and outs.

Reddit lifx had people complain how they can't update their gen 3 bulbs too so thankfully the gen 1-2 can use the pc to update it because gen 3 users can't use the pc updater.

  • +1

For those who's interested in HomeKit support, check HomeBridge project on github which you run on a 24/7 device(PC, Mac, Raspberry Pi and etc) and it makes all sorts of devices compatible with HomeKit.

    • would it work with the Gen 1 bulbs as well?

      • Yeah it works for both Gen 1 and Gen 2 Lifx bulbs.

        • Can homebridge run on an android phone?

        • +1

          @Redwood:
Not sure about that as it was meant to be a replacement for apple's home kit. I don't think it has integration for google home yet.

        • @Redwood: Not as I know of.

  • +3

idk whats wrong with ozbargainers yesterday/today.
August of last year, a deal for getting these for $39.51 each reached +232. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/262424
And these, if you buy 10, are $19.80 each…

This is an amazing deal, I was fumbling and stressing to order these last night because I thought they'd be GONE, but I guess not?

    • Yeah it's a great deal!

    • +1

I think it may be in part from the fact that that one said '50% off', for anyone who isn't familiar with the pricing of these. If this one had a similar '60% off' or something in the title, it'd probably have at least double the upvotes :O

  • +1

Just to let you know Hue bulbs are cheaper than $70 on Amazon.co.uk and come delivered within a few days. I ordered a bunch of white only bulbs and they only cost $30 each. They are the same size as traditional bulbs and fit into regular fittings. They work very well natively with Amazon Alexa and pretty much every other home automation system.

    • Compare with lifx and you will see, there is no comparison.

      • Well there obviously is. Native Alexa support for me is a requirement, as is a smaller aesthetically pleasing shape. Huge appendages hanging from my fittings doesn't work for me.

Max 5 minute setup, also a lot more functional.
I already have 2 gen1 and they aren't very big, but gen 2 and gen3 are smaller.
Directly from their website, a gen3 costs 10 more and are shipped from an Australian warehouse so they arrive quickly.
They don't need a base system like Phillip hue either.

Each to their own, but I don't see why you are commenting on a great deal when the deal holds no interest to you and suggesting people buy a completely different product.

        • @BradleyDS2: what functionality do these have that the Hue don't? I like the fact that Hue is an ecosystem with motion sensors and wall switches. The wall
Switches are the best, my gf doesn't like Alexa but is happy to use the switches, which are battery powered, require no wiring and take about 1 minute to set up.

        • @thorton82:
          http://smarthomesolver.com/reviews/wp-content/uploads/2016/0…
Have a look at picture comparisons, lifx can do much brighter.
Most if not all the functionality you desire can be achieved through IFTT.

        • -1

@BradleyDS2: ifttt is terrible. It requires the word trigger for voice control. I want native support. So apart from being brighter, you haven't really shown any extra functionality as claimed, instead you have shown less.

        • @thorton82: I was referring to using IFTT for motion sensors, and as for wall switches you can use a flic or other alternatives.

        • @thorton82:
As someone that has neither, the lifx seemed better otherwise I wouldn't have even bothered buying one nor posting this… I was considering a wemo then a hue then finally this.

I know you love your hues but to say "what do these have that the hues don't?" is kinda contradictory and pointless.
The guy said it's brighter, reviewers has say it's gotten more accurate colours, the no hub is a plus(plug and play), and you said it's $30 for a white only whereas thus can be 'up to' $20 each. This is colored, buyers don't need to invest in a hub and it's basically just cheaper which is why it's better, cheaper.

The native support, trigger and atheistic is something we will have to deal with for cheaping out… But I'm okay with not spending that extra money for those trivialities.

Oh and I can't recommend the wemo, 1 of the bulb sucked, had a crap reception, had to be in the same room as the wemo link and loses connection, and won't reconnect if flipped off and back on.
The 2nd bulb sometime can't connect to a room 3 rooms away… But otherwise works perfectly if 2 rooms away.
I either had a bad batch of wemo led bulbs or they truly sucked, I got my refund from jb today and I spent up to 3 hrs trouble shooting them last night -_-

I really hope these lifx arn't as troublesome as the wemo with one less hub to worry about.

  • I'm really really confused with all these smart bulbs. I have 3 questions before I pull the trigger.
    1) Is this one colour or multi coloured?
    2) Is this a good price if I want to purchase just one? (Seems like it is)
    3) I need something that will light up with my alarm in the morning (Sync with my alarm). Will this work?

If the answer to all these is yes, I will buy 1 (Realistically probably 2 or 3 haha).

    Thanks

  • I bought deez, 4x flic buttons for about $106 delivered. https://www.amazon.com/Flic-Wireless-Smart-Button-4-pack/dp/…

Probably overkill but, couldn't find them cheaper.

    • I might actually need some of these for the oldies… But $100 for just a button is arghhhhhh

      • The price is the only thing holding me back from buying Flic buttons. I could stomach $15 maybe.

  • Thanks Zeral!
Bought two with the clearance last year, and was hoping to see them cheap again.
My girlfriend really wanted one so she'll have a nice surprise!

    • +1

I bought 2 too for my bedroom last night… Cancelled it this morning and got 10 xD

I decided to share them with the household and as you say, they'd be great gifts ;)

  • much and much different to Xiaomi Yeelight? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/286712
almost one third of the price , cant afford this :(

    • They are only whites, not coloured

  • I just received mine and it's definitely coloured!! Loving it so far!

  • Thanks OP, ordered 10 and received it in 2 days.

I love it. They are hreat and I can't believe tgat I got then for $19 each !!

Thank you so much for this deal

  • Perhaps some stupid questions, but after getting shitty $20 ones from Bunnings/Masters, thinking it might be a limitation of low-quality ones:

    • Can you define what the starting/default colour is, e.g. white, red etc?
    • I assume they'll work like a normal lightbulb via the switch or do you need to use the app to turn on/off?
    • +1

      Yes you can define it.

You can still turn it off and on via the switch it just means that if you turn it off from the switch you can't turn it on from the app because you've cut the power supply.

    • +1

They stick to whatever colour you last set it to, but first time it starts off as normal neutral colour.
You can use both the switch and the app, you can save it as blue, switch it off at the switch and it'll turn back on as blue, so just set it up once kind of thing.
App takes about 5 secs to load but you can turn off the bedroom lights without getting out of bed too.

In other words, they're alot better than those crappy overpriced wemos that takes 5 minute to boot up, whereas these lifx takes 10 seconds to connect to the router after flipping the power on.

I didn't think I'd be this happy with them and now I'm reluctant in giving my spares away… That's how satisfied I am with it especially at $20each.

Oh and these are probably generation 1 clearance items too, so you'd have to pay $70 for the newer models once these run out.

  • Does anyone know how to edit or delete schedules? I created 2 schedules but it doesn't work.

    • Think you need to update it to firmware 2 and claim it for the schedule to work.
I tried the schedule 3 times and it worked for the ones are connected to the Internet but no options to pick the bulbs that are offline.

      To delete the schedule.

      https://imgur.com/a/lR7JW

      • Thanks. I can now see the schedules after I claim it.

  • To confirm these are definitely multi coloured bulbs.

After many hours of messing around, I finally managed to get one set up properly. I think if you have an Android phone you will probably run into more issues than using iOS at least from my experience and what I have read on the net. The main problem comes down to updating the firmware out of the box for the Gen 1 A21 bulbs. Without the latest firmware, I was unable to 'claim' my Lifx bulb to my account and could not set up rooms or any integrations. If you dig around you can find the firmware updater software on the Lifx website which is what I had to use to update the bulbs. Originally I could get a bulb connected but could not update it or get it connected to the Lifx cloud. After multiple attempts of updating the software it magically worked and I could use the Android app properly. I think usage will vary as have read that many people did not suffer from the same issues as I.

Props to OP for finding the deal and the seller posted them really quickly. I was a little worried after I made the purchase and someone pointed out to me the seller was fairly new and had little overall feedback, however, the feedback that was left was strongly positive.

    • Ya I had trouble at first too cause I was trying to update them all at the same time, all had same ssid name, all required passwords and I can't tell if it were even updating from the phone.

PC was the best way to update the firmware but still had to reattempt it a few times and luckily it resumes instead of restarting from scratch.

I was worried at the start too thinking how the heck are these $20 and these guys keep refreshing the qty everyday. They probably have plenty of stock and have sold over a few hundred bulbs if you multiply the amount each users bought.

Best color to attract the least insects so far are warm, red and probably green according to here.
      https://www.reddit.com/r/lifx/comments/5opot8/best_color_tha…
I bought this specifically to dim the lights in my bedroom for TV watching without a lamp taking up space, the multi color was a bonus! Really happy!

      • Did you update yours all at once or individually? I just did one and then attempted a second and it kept hanging at 99.99%. Tempted to plug half a dozen in and try my luck. I don't feel like spending 4 hours on each bulb.

        • 1 at a time if you're stuck at 99.9%.
Should take 2-5mins tops since they'll resume from 75%.

I found that turning off the bulb from the power switch, turn them back on, make sure that they're discoverable from the app, then run the pc updater works 100% of a time. I didn't even bother to power down my v2.1 bulbs.

I've added 3 more bulbs today using them in the bathrooms with no dramas, should take nowhere near 4hrs.

        • @Zeral: I did the power cycle thing and it works but sometimes it takes 3 or 4 attempts. I sent in a support ticket the first night I received them and still haven't got a response. Pretty poor service from Lifx.

        • @OxfordMD:
It's so fast to reconnect I didn't even consider it as a power cycle xD
Switch it off 2 secs, turn it back on and it'll reconnect within 5-10 secs.

No comment on the poor service though because they all suck except for maybe Apple and other price extortion companies.

    • They really need to improve the update firmware don't they! Worst updating I've experienced ever!

      • I tried the wemo prior to this, now that was the worst experience I've ever had.
5 minutes for the hub to reboot itself, app crashing, Terrible reception that can't even reach 2-3 rooms away, and we're stuck with an app update only that doesn't feel like it's even working.

In comparison to the lifx, there's no 5 minute hub to turn on, bulb take 10 secs to connect to your router, reception can reach 1 corner of the house to the other end upstairs, and have a pc updater.

True that they need to improve the update procedure but thankfully its resumable too instead of restarting from scratch.

        • Doesn't sound that bad now!

      • The just couldn't get them to update via the Android app, on two devices! I ended up using the desktop one, and still took HOURS! I left it overnight, flashed 3 outta 4, needed to restart the last lightbulb before it would update. Since then though, they've been pretty good, although last night had one bulb 'factory reset' — strange!

  • Thanks OP, was looking for the colour bulbs, brought a pair.

  • $19 a pop, can't say no to that! Just ordered 10. Should pair nicely with my new google home

    • Unfortunately :(
      http://www.lifx.com/pages/googlenow

Unsure how long it'll take unless Google home is a seperate entity.

Just another quick tip, apparently if your lights are let's say 30% and its not bright enough for whatever it is your doing, just flip the switch off and back on, and it'll reset back to 100% brightness without requiring a phone.
