I waited for 5 business days but I was still getting an error message when trying to submit the application. I had to ring customer support and they submitted my application on their end.

      • Thanks! Interesting… did you get the "payg plus prepaid"? Did you have to do anything special, or does the webpage just offer you a choice of plans (within the $40)?

        • +1

No it just offered me the $40 option with 365 day expiry (2nd tab I think - not the mymix combo one).

    • Yeah I activated my sim on the 365 day payg option also. Made a call and have been trying the eftpos application but still getting error message. In saying that, it hasn't been 5 days yet, so, like crazynic, I'll give the crew at Voda a call if it still fails after the 5th :)

      • Im in same boat, activated monday afternoon, still getting error today. Will call them tomorrow if I still get same error.

        • +2

Well, I activated Sunday, and yesterday night, successfully redeemed. I dare say, you are at the verge of being able to redeem. Try again tonight or tomorrow.

        • +1

@bluesky: It finally accepted IMEI today. :)

        • Virgil began upon activation just after midnight Tuesday (technically Wednesday), and plea for redemption finally accepted just now (Monday afternoon), thank vod.

Seems like 4 working days, including Australia Day; otherwise 3.

  • +2

    Thanks for the deal.
Ported my number, activated with 365 day expiry, applied for $50 EFTPOS, unlocked with the guy on ebay USD14.95, and tested on Telstra all good.
    Unlocked here http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/152296812675

    • Just curios, what did you end up doing with the voda sim then? If you don't mind me asking ^^

      • I use another number on Telstra presently so Voda is a spare at the moment, I had an expired prepaid where I didnt want to lose the number as its easy to remember, so I ported it in case I need a spare or for a future business need.

TL/DR: voda SIM back in the Y6, but Y6 not my primary phone.

    • The unlock prices vary so much from $2.99 to $14.95

      • The 14.95 was my second attempt. The other one I tried could not get a valid code.

Was able to get through to the confirmation page for Gift card after two days, now i wait. Make sure your read all the instructions and not just go to the link provided.

You need to activate the Sim card AND make at least 1 phone call, i actually at first just read the link only and activated sim card without making a phone call.

    • +1

Yes thats a good point. I called the number mentioned, and actually made one -real- call, (very short, but still prob not necessary), before the EFTPOS page, just to be sure.

      • +1

Yeah I made a real call first too, mainly to be eligible, but also to test the speakers on the phone.. Someone on this thread mentioned they were so soft, couldn't even hear the other called even on loud speaker?

        • +1

I just tested that. On the Y6, the speakerphone is not that clear, or loud.
Anyhow on max volume for me - enough to hear what is said when on the desk 2 m away.

got my 50$ gift card through slow mail after 1 week i submitted (after 5 days of activation)

Found some more specs, including more battery life details (see pdf at bottom for more) http://www.allphones.com.au/phones/huawei-y6-elite/ It's not a huawei site, but all the specs I know seem correct.

BTW I came across a site claiming it has the 32 bit version of android lollipop 5.1 (even though the processor is 64 bit), but can't find it again… can anyone verify it is 64 bit android?

    • +2

It is running a 32 bit version of Andriod 5.1
      http://imgur.com/a/2PL3u

      • +1

Thanks! I was really worried it would be slower than my old 64 bit phone… but turns out it's running a 32 bit version of Andriod 5.1 too!

FWIW did some research before realizing that, and 64 bit ARM seems about 20% faster than 32 bit, but varying wildly on specific parts of benchmarks. The cortex-A53 cores (which this phone has) are really good 32 bit processors, according to the raspberry pi guys.

If anyone else is seeing their internal storage getting chewed up rather quickly, a few posts over at whirlpool suggest to do a factory reset as one of the updates on the phone has seemingly eaten up about 600mb of storage during the install by Vodaphone and hasnt released it back to user for some reason.

  • I haven't got an online giftcard before, and I'm always leery of giving out information online… so I'd like to check some concerns.

I'm probably being too cautious, especially since several people have already actually got their giftcards, but I might as well list all my giftcard concerns while I'm at it:

    • why do the special this way, instead of a discount?

      • To get your info?

But they already have all the info listed (contact details, phone number, IMEI etc).

    • To get third-party spam consent (last checkbox) - although they have the info, they probably can't use it beyond providing the service without this consent.

But you can opt-out of marketing - apparently, for all of it. See s.3 of "Vodafone's Marketing Terms & Conditions". The "Privacy Policy" (first checkbox on the form) describes how to do it, including customer care on 1555 from your VF phone.

    • To ensure you actually start using vodafone?

This makes most sense to me, as I think that's the purpose of the special. They don't want to sell a phone at a loss, only to have it used on another network.

    • does opting-out of marketing completely work?

Please, VF, no telemarketers calling my mobile… I thought cutting the landline fixed that…

    • do you need to opt-out again, after they've processed the giftcard form? Will it be too late then, with your info have already been sent to third-parties?

    • Why does it take 5 days, from activation til you can register for the card?

There's been so many angry complaints on vodafone's website, ruining any kind of positive xmas goodwill. It seems weird to me, as it should all be electronic and pretty much instant. It sounds like some kind of human review in the process, but why would they have that?

    • Why is the giftcard form on a third-party site (force.com), not vodafone?

Probably OK, because vodafone link directly to it, but pretty weird. Force.com seems to be a kind of appserver - you'd think they'd provide an on-your-own domain option. Vodafone is a big company, and just these giftcards alone must cost tens of thousands of dollars. They could afford the small extra to do it properly.

    Thanks for indulging my paranoia!

A proportion of people who buy items where a cashback is offered will never actually apply for the cashback, especially if it is a cumbersome process.

      • Ah, so the 5 days benefits them.

        • +1

Vodafone are probably sending phone records to the third party for processing which likely occurs only every few days, hence the 5 day delay. But no doubt it dissuades the less tenacious purchasers from claiming the cashback.

Bought & activated last week, will not reach the 5 day period before 31st of Jan. Tech support said the link will still work as long as the phone is bought before 31 Jan.

    Hope it's true.

    • Hope so too as I bought 2 on 24th and still can't redeem gift card on either one, 5th business day will be tomorrow.

      • I was able to redeem in 3 days, but maybe a bit of variation. Please remember to make a call with the phones, or the redemption won't work.

        • +1

Yes was activated and call made on the same day, 24th. Had bought another one the week before and that would only redeem on the 5th business day too.

    • Tech support is probably right; cannot imagine them being so draconian about this, especially since when you can redeem (3-5 days after activation) was not stated on the pack.

Got it, waiting now for 14-20 days for the gift card to actually arrive. :)

Just a little tip to make 3D games look a little nicer on this screen (for those with a very keen eye).

    1) Go to settings

    2) About Phone

    3) Click "Build number" 7 times to activate developer mode.

    4) Go back to previous menu and you should now see "Developer Options", click it.

    5) Scroll down to "Force 4x MSAA" and activate it.

This should turn on anti-aliasing for some games and makes the edges of objects a little cleaner (I think it looks closer to a 1080p display). It will mean a drop in framerate though but not too bad for most games. The screen is already quite good so many people will hardly notice the difference unless you compare with 2 screenshots of the same game and zoom in to check it.

  • I also bought it yesterday (Jan 29th) at Vodafone shop for $129. Waiting 5 business days to activate the $50 voucher will mean it will be well past Jan 31..

  • For those who missed this deal, kmart might be a good option. I just bought one from kmart Firle SA for $109 (though it was marked $129). They still had at least 3 units on the shelf.

    • still a great deal!

  • Anyone opted-out of vodafone marketing (after consenting on giftcard form)? Was it involved?

How soon must you do it to avoid getting on "partner" lists?

  • Yay, went through today for the $50 bonus back.
Purchased and made a call last Tuesday.

Thanks, OP. Great cheap device for backing up.

Also I managed to root this baby and wrote up a how-to guide here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/general/root-root-h…

Well done. Saw your post over at whirlpool and was about to repost it here when I read your comment.

  • Still waiting on my eftpos card in the mail, successfully submitted my request on 27th Jan.

Anybody else still waiting on theirs to arrive?

    • Still waiting, submitted 30 Jan.

Not worried, ISTR it takes up to a fortnight(?)

      • +1

Yeah, not sweating too much yet. Although a few people seemed to get their cards within a week or so.

        • Likely a rush at the deadline.

    • I submitted 25 Jan and still waiting.

My Eftpos card arrived today. Rejoice.

    • Ditto. Orangutans, breakfast cereals.

    • Seeing your comment, I went and checked. Sure enough, it has arrived. Thanks :-)

I also noticed the EFTPos card activation date is 8 Feb, and it is here today, 10 Feb. A bit surprised at how quick it got here. Since AustPost is supposed to take longer now, 2-6 days, unless there is a priority sticker.

  • I just noticed this SMS from Vodafone today, on this Huawei phone, and I am rather stumped.

Msg from Vodafone: Your account remains overdue. To avoid pending recovery action please call 1300 650 405 to arrange payment. If you are experiencing Financial Hardship, please contact 1527 to discuss how Vodafone can assist.

Given that I activated the phone on the Pay As You Go Plus, 365 day expiry, and there is still over $39 credit, I do not understand this message at all. I also find the tone of the message rather menacing … a very unpleasant introduction to Vodafone, as a new customer.

I logged back into MyVodafone, and nowhere can I see it explicitly stated that I am on the 365 day expiry. But just under my number, it clearly says Pay As You Go Plus.

    Has anyone else encountered this?

I will give them a call tomorrow, but thought to share and see if someone else have seen this before. Thanks in advance.

    • +1

I suspect the previous owner of your number has outstanding debt.

      • Haha, you might be quite right about this :-)
I just went on live chat with Vodafone custsupport, and after looking at my account, the chap did say I can ignore the message. Also, made him confirm that I am indeed on the 365 day expiry plan, and provide me the exact expiry date.

Well, rather pleasant customer support, although the SMS message left a bad taste at first. Hope they don't keep sending the message.

  • Not happy Jan. Tried multiple times to register and every time I'd be welcomed with that box saying Something didn't go as planned. etc etc.

Called Vodafone and the first time they said online form will be active till 8/2 and if it doesn't work to give them a call to do it manually. So gave them a call on Friday. Said they would put it through but to check on Monday.

Monday come a supervisor saying they can't do it anymore but they can give me a credit of $50 to my account. Not happy Jan.

    • +1

Yeah I'd be taking that further. Report it to the vodafone forum thread listed at the start of this thread http://community.vodafone.com.au/t5/Prepaid/COULDN-T-REDEEM-… , tell them when purchased and how many times you tried prior to the offer expiring. Assuming you purchased in January, if they cant come to the party on the Eftpos card then take it to dept fair trading or Telecommunications ombudsman and perhaps drop a hint that is what you will be doing without coming across as too rude. Keep the outside of the box with the offer, and your receipt if possible.

Edit: Form still seems active today, although I didnt enter any details so perhaps it denies after submitting.

      • Thanks for that. I did already report, so now is a waiting game :)

  • Turns out you can't get cash-out with the giftcard (actually says it in fine print on the card), but must make purchases (of, like, gifts).
