It was a great phone in 2014.

    • +4

Typing on one right now. Feels like 2014.

The signal strength on the S5 is surprisingly weak. I cannot get more than 2 bars while my Lg g2 manages at least 4 on LTE networks.

The fingerprint reader is also laughably slow and inaccurate compared to say the Nexus 5x or Motorola G4.

Still good performance though. Sd801 holding up pretty well.

Not a price war. Just Samsung Australia wanting to get rid of stock.

  • +1

Still amazed this phone is for sale. Do not see any great plan deals on S6, but there are still some S5 ones.
Maybe I should sell my S5 while there is still interest…

  • Is there a current generation phone with better specs at a better price?

    • Moto G4 Plus

Comparable but don't have the exact same features.

    • Xiaomi mi5s is a better comparison, for a small phone in the 5 inch range. Great If you don't mind the MIUI interface.

3 years old and bettered by all of the cheap Chinese phones released in the last 6 months within this price range.

    • -1

Has band band 28 even back then and most Chinese still don't have now ……

      • Who cares, band 28 is overrated!

        • +4

I wouldn't call it overrated as it appears that 44% of all Telstra sites (second most behind B3), and a whopping 73% of all Optus sites (most amongst all LTE frequencies) transmit on B28. source The coverage of B28 is quite significant (the advantage of the relatively low frequency).

I think it still holds its ground in a few areas (screen, photos, videos etc) not to mention you can get local after sales support if something goes wrong.

    • +8

sd mem expansion, removable battery, waterproof

      • Fast charge? Blue tick?

        • -1

BLue tick is absolute bullshit. I'm amazed fair trading haven't pulled them up for it yet.

You can get this refurbished and save $100. 🔗 (use code)

  • Am running Marshmallow on mine, it's slowed down a LOT recently. Have owned several Galaxy phones prior to the S5, the S5's camera is surprisingly terrible in low light.

  • Amazing 32 bit processor!

  • +2

LOL I bit the bullet and purchased it from Harvey Norman for $370 yesterday :-/. I was looking at the S5 since early December (prior to going on sale), the previous one I purchased (the el-cheapo Samsung J1 mini which itself was only $89) a few months ago was starting to grate on me. A little pedantic but charging it after 8 hours of use was driving me bonkers. I've had it on for 31 hours, having used the Wifi, Bluetooth (transferred a few files from phone to phone) and listened to music….. still on 92% battery life.

Yes it's 3 years old but what won me over were the specs of the phone and the fact that it's still universally admired despite the release of the S6 and S7 models. A friend purchased it a few months ago, if only he held off he would have saved $250 compared to the price he paid haha.

Happy with the purchase, if only I waited a day to save a few dollars lol.

How anyone can say its a crappy old phone its beyond me, do you even own one?

    • +1

I like to think I know a thing or two and yes I think it's not a great phone for that price. I used to work for a telco so had plenty of time using phones. The S6 was a large step change over the S5 and it was the last of Samsungs dull looking Galaxy S phones. I think a better buy would be the Moto G4 Plus.

      • Looks at the cost of function (removable battery and microSD)…

    • +1

I have two sitting here and it's crappy.
had always been the most laggy of the Galaxy s phone yet.

    • Yes had one on release and still have one in my family. It was a laggy pos, was of bloatware. It has good specs but phones with lower specs are still faster. People are praising this phone just because of a good specs list and a Samsung brand name. But actual user experience is shit. Any $200 phone listed on ozbargain in the past year is better.

  • I recommend people convert the phone to wireless charging as the charging interface is covered with a flap.
The conversion will cost $10-20 for both transmitter aND receiver.

This phone bought with $300 gift card that I paid $200 for through the Amex offer (effectively making the phone $266), then on $25 Aldi mobile plan. Or just go to S7 at Virgin mobile https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/287335
Sell Gear Fit 2 for say $150, get $150 credit on sign-up to reduce price. Any thoughts on those two options? It's for a new android user.

  • Officeworks are no longer $385 for this phone, now advertising for $367 Price beat is goooonnne!!!

    Congrats if you got it.

  • Great phone. Hat tip to marketers though for making people think it's redundant.

  • +1

I bought one from the HN deal on Christmas day 2015, and I have had no issues with it at all. Will probably be using for two more Christmases.

  • When they were first released it took me 3 goes to get one without a fault, cameras couldn't focus. I must have been lucky.

    Great handset.

You have to admire the s5 for what it is and what it brings to the table. Not many china droids can do it.

    Like the fact it can.

    Use msd card
    Battery life is great
    Removable battery
    IP rating
Screen is great, can view in sunlight
    Security updates
    Ir blaster
Plus the samsung features like screen capture, make the screen smaller for one handed use
Camera is nice, uhd recording too

  • +1

I think for what you get and what you pay its a great phone. I own one I bought the previous Christmas, and upgraded to the S7 when Optus had an offer too good to resist around September. Compare that to how much an iphone that is 2 generations behind will cost you and its features (and cute tiny screen).

The weakness comparing the S5 to the S7 as an overall experience, is the camera —- the S7's RAW camera support + low light performance is like night and day compared to the S5. Everything else has minor differences from a general day to day use (browser, email etc).

I added a $15 Ikea wireless charging back to the S5 so I can wirelessly charge it and purchased a special protective cover on Amazon for it designed to cater to the slightly thicker wireless charging back.

What I like in the S5 over the s7 is removable battery, fully flat screen.

If you've ever tried getting a tempered glass screen protector that offers 100% cover on a phone with curved screen edges like the S7 you'll know what I mean… On the S5 you can buy a cheap protector, stick it on and it goes on like magic…

On a totally different side note, I bought an LG K10 phone from JB for $219 this afternoon — for those looking for a new phone perhaps for a parent (as in my case), or as a spare, and the price of the S5 seems a bit out of reach this might be a good alternative.

So far playing with the LG I'm very impressed for the performance to price ratio and there are some features out of the box that even the S7 does not have — such as a direct dial widget. The S7 has a contact widget so its one extra tap to access… The LG does however let you change the icon to larger ones, use photos/gallery items as an icon or choose from a range of icons available. This means for a parent who is not too tech savy, you could create a series of large icons on one of the home screens with photos of people that are quite large that only need a single press and the phone will start calling.

Over the next week or two I should get an idea what the battery life is like…

  • While I think it's a decent device if you have to have local support, the Xiaomi Mi5 is much better value for money…even the Redmi Note 3 Pro Prime SE (Kate) offers similar performance and better battery life for much less money..

  • Get a custom rom on it and it will be great. The software that comes with it is outdated.
I had a grey import S5 but I returned it, and moved to a Nexus 5X.

Nearly half the price. Better in nearly every way. Only thing missing is the b28.

Just based on specs its better already.
OS: Miui, smoother scrolling and app switching with update to Nougat in the future vs Laggy Touchwiz, no further updates.
    Battery: 4000mah vs 2800mah Removable.
Screen: Latest SLCD vs Pentile Amoled.
    Ram: 3gb vs 2gb.
    Camera: Both crap.
Cpu: newer more energy efficient at same speeds vs older gen.
Fast working fingerprint sensor vs wonky swiping sensor.
Water proofing: Splash resistant vs unreliable water resistant thats not covered by warranty.
Warranty: Save the money and buy a new one when it breaks.

  • Anyone update your S5 to Marshmallow? any feedback would be appreciated as I'm thinking to update mine but has been reading some articles and most saying having heaps of issue. Cheers.
