Ho Chi Minh City Vietnam Return

Any good deals for Saigon ?

    • +8

Same city. It officially called Ho Chi Minh city

      • +17

        don't feed the troll.

      • -2

I still call it Saigon in protest at the commos. who, by the way, are still disliked by the 2nd 3rd generation (since the war) South Vietnamese. And the South Vietnamese never correct me for calling it Saigon. Did you know that as late as the 1980's and maybe even later, they were throwing South Vietnamese into 're-education' camps?

        • +1

Ah history. On that basis you could object to most countries (including Australia in the 1980's) - unfortunately bad things have happened most places.

        • same here. fk Ho Chi Minh - communist prik

      • Hay. Woot Woot Hubba hubba raaaarrrrr.

        A Subway ad ????

        • Vietnum baby. All the pho u want

          @supnigs:

Do they have a 6 inch pho ?

        • -1

@jv: maybe 4 inch small serve on side street. Open plan consumption. No spitting!

  • +11

oh finally i will know the difference between the real vietnamese pho vs cabramatta pho

    • +3

the real vietnamese pho vs cabramatta pho

cabramatta pho is more commonly called 'pho nee'

      • +1

phonee like the pony horse ?

        • +1

You might be thinking of the 2 star crash test rated Mustang, that's a phonee pony.

      • It's pronounced "fuh" (kind of like "far"), not "foe".

        • +8

Are you trying to be 'fuh nee' ???

    • +5

vietnamese pho in vn is nothing special lol … dont set your expectations so high. pho AN is still the best pho i've had in my life haha

      • pho AN is still the best pho i've had in my life

Are you referring to Pho Anh in District 3?

        • +1

no .. the one in bankstown LOL (unfortunately they sooo $$$$ now) … and ive had all the highly rated pho in HCMC … didnt really like any of them all that much.

        • +1

@hippyhippy: Pho is like car. Everyone has an opinion on which is the best one.

        • +4

@hippyhippy: That's because you're eating "highly rated" Pho.

Find a vendor on the side of the road, sit on a mini plastic chair, and enjoy the taste of real Pho! Yum!

        • +1

@tomleonhart: well sure, but a ferrari/porsche is always going to be better than a commodore.

        • @hippyhippy: yeah but is Ferrari better than Porsche?

Is Pho Tau Bay better than Pho An? LOL

        • @hippyhippy:

Well, only if you have a weakass baby's stomach..

          @railspider:
What are some other amazing dishes to try in Vietnam? Including from street vendors

        • +2

@ndagudbargain: Banh Mi (delicious baguette sandwich thing), Banh Xeo (sort of like an omelette), Bun Cha (pork meatball things with noodles)

There are food vendors everywhere - the best thing to do is follow your nose, and look for places popular with the locals!

        • @hippyhippy:

Get a shot before you leave.

        • @railspider:

Bot chien, nam nuong, banh xeo, bun bo hue and heaps and heaps of other yummy food just to name a few.

        • @railspider:
Awesome tips, thanks! Thats what we did in Bali. Found the most amazing nasi goreng from a street vendor. Never got food poisoning. Can't wait to experience Vietnam!

        • +2

@railspider: Banh Mi - is Vietnamese for "Play Bacteria Russian Roulette"

        • @railspider: seriously, all your recommendations are so meh.

        • @punk000: Might want to stick to the Hungry Jacks coupons then!

        • @hippyhippy: the one in cabra is essentially the same, only cheaperrrr

      • Pho in Saigon is very disappointing. Even the rice noodle is crap compare to Sydney.

    • +3

it's all about the beef, oz beef is awesome, so like hippyhipppy said, don't set your expectation too high.

went to hanoi, excited to have the pho then dissapointed.

      • Yep - aussie beef makes pho amazing. I had Pho in VN and was greatly disappointed.

I believe there are places in VN that serve aussie beef

      • +1

The country is full of Aussie beef now, local beef is more expensive than aussie one sometimes, they even go as far as importing live cattle to be slaughtered there and some of the dodgy abattoirs got caught up with animal cruelty on the news not too long ago.

    • I only been to South Nam and I found that both are bloody delicious so it don't matter!

  • +4

    Cheap!

    Here's the actual specials:

    http://www.airasia.com/au/en/promotion.page?rr=rx10140509

Unfortunately, the return flight can't be bought for this fight separetly.

  • Amazing prices, thanks OP

  • How cheap is this.

    Perth $220, Melb $224, Syd $229, GC $229

  • +1

Waiting for flight deals to Bali.

    • +1

They don't need to do Bali deals just yet. Still lots of demand while a carrier is withdrawing from the flight path. Lots of passengers, fewer seats, no need to do deals.

  • +1

What's the VOA costs these days? I know the visa from the Viet embassy is AUD$95.

    • +1

Check local-non-franchised travel agents and see if they can do one cheaper.

I got mine through a mate's travel agency, though it was 5year multi-entry.

Drop me a PM if you want his contact

      • I think the 5 year multi entry is only for people with Vietnamese ancestry?

        • yep, thats what i got. But he also organizes the single/multiple entry Visas for his customers who do tours through him. so organizing it shouldnt be a problem

        • @Neilgero:

Wow 5 years visa for non-vietnamese?

        • @nightelves: no, you need Vietnamese Ancestry unfortunately, I used my parents VN issued birth cert and my own aus birth cert to prove it

        • @Neilgero:
how much does the Vietnamese family 5 year visa exemption cost? I didn't know it existed until it was too late to apply for one on my upcoming trip. I went for a cheap ~$53 3 month single entry VOA instead using vietnamvisapro

        • +1

@Infy_AsiX: My mate with the travel agent got it for me for $85. Had to submit the birth certs for verification as well as my Passport (so that they can stick the visa on)

        • +1

@Neilgero: That's not bad. You can do it yourself too. A small correction by the way it's Vietnamese family not ancestry, so spouses are eligible.

    • +3

$US25 when I went in December. Wait was about 45 minutes at the airport.

      • Dazweeja, do you know if this also applies to kids?

    • E-Visa is $19

  • ok question: can we stay over in KL for say 5 days and still get this cheap fare?

    • -7

unless you have family there, not sure why you'd want to stay in KL…

      • +5

because the city is nice and i can eat durian everyday JV

        • -4

          because the city is nice

          i can eat durian everyday

and I thought you were being serious… :)

      • KL is a great city to visit.
Although not exactly set up as a tourist hub it has lots of interesting things to do and see - and has great shopping.
Its quite safe and the food is great.
In SE Asia if I was spending someone else's money I would go to Singapore, but if I was spending my own money I would go to KL.

        • kl much better than singapore unless you want to shop clothes etc.

      • For once JV is correct!

    • +1

I recently flew to Bali with Air Asia via KL and wanted a few days stayover in KL. They said I would have to buy separate tickets if I wanted a longer stay over than what was on the website , which I did.

KL is a great city for a visit

  • How cheap is this.

    Super cheap, bro.

  • cheap … but i dont suppose these are direct flights are they?

    • Most (all?) AirAsia flights to Vietnam stop-over in KL. Usually stopover is 3 hours, I've seen as low as 1.5 and as high as 10 though.

I hate waiting in the KL airport, so usually pay a few dollars extra for a flight with a more convenient stopover.

      • Airport lounge FTW

        • How much does it cost to use a lounge in KL2?

I'd pay anything to get out of the sterile waiting corridor (they don't even let you in the boarding lounge until ~1 hour before the flight) with no power chargers.

        • +1

          @railspider:

Think it's 27USD with Priority Pass. Well worth it and it's on level 2 as you go up the lift and turn right. Think it's called the Wellness lounge from memory.

I too hate being stuck at the airport but with the airport lounge it makes the experience less daunting.

        • +3

          @railspider:

I paid ~$80 to stay in the Air Asia Lounge over night (11.30pm-8am) and it was so, so. there was only two 'bathrooms' (toiet/shower combo's) one of which was out of order, the 'working' bathroom had a leaky toilet… but least they give you a towel.

As I had landed late; the food court was shutting/out of food (even Maccas and Popeyes! :( ) and the food in the AA lounge was a no go. the cabonara had a crust on it as did the chicken-stew thing. Least they had free fruit and soft drinks and beer cheap enough at 15MYR.

The entertainment room was closed at 12AM and as for luggage lockers/minding; they tell you to dump it under the stairs and its not monitored.

Theres a resting quarter upstairs which is just a room filled with assorted sized bean bags. there are plenty of power sockets everywhere also.

          hope this review helps

        • @railspider: Depending on the exchange rate, it could be as low as $A27 from this:-
          http://www.pointhacks.com.au/dragonpass-lounge-hack/

        • @nightelves:

That's good directions. Its behind 'THE BAR'.

Small, but never busy, has showers.

Pluses: dedicated wifi, unlimited beer, soda drinks, free food
Minus: No spirits/wine (or at least I could not see any), food

    • of course no. stay over time in KL malaysia is between 2 hours and 12 hours.
hence my question, can you stay over in KL for 3 days?

      • +3

can you stay over in KL for 3 days?

You can, if you believe you can.

        • +3

thanks. wow seriously it is so hard to get serious answer on ozb lately.
i believe i can fly but i dont think i can

        • +3

@dragonindespair: Oh, you wanted a serious answer? You'll have to pay for that.

Ok in all seriousness, low cost carriers deal in point-to-point flights. When they package together connecting flights like this to a destination they don't service directly, you either (a) take their offered itinerary with connecting flights that are packaged together for a particular price*, or (b) you book the legs separately to the same destination, on the dates and times that you choose.

That way you will get the stopover you want, but you will almost certainly not get the price, because as I noted above by an * - these flights are often packaged together by LCC's to remain price-competitive with carriers who fly direct. If you want the cheap price offered, you have to use connecting flights. Stopover? Pay for two flights separately, and hope they are as cheap.

So how much is the stopover worth to you?

        • -1

@carwashhair: thanks. nah, i dont want to pay too much to do stayover.
i thought the ability to stop over or not is depends on the country.
ie singapore i remember i paid just USD25 so i can stay over in singapore for a week. that was a flight from sydney to other country stopover in singapore and i bought 1 ticket return fare - but yeah it was probably singapore airlines not budgets

Citibank Everyday Plus account. No ATM fees and no Forex fees, no monthly fee on the account either.

      • +1

        thanks!!

      • +2

Make sure you apply for the Citibank Everyday Plus account WELL in advance to your intended travel! the process is tedious and its a sh#tty time dealing with citibank if you run into dramas (as i had experienced)

        • Same here. They sent the card well before giving me the account details. Couldn't activate the card without the account details.

        • Two weeks before a trip to Japan last year I realised my Citibank Plus account had been shut down because I didn't leave a balance in there (whoops). I thought at least I checked early enough to reapply and get a new card and applied immediately. 5 weeks later I was back in Aus and still hadn't seen my card. When I enquired they said that because the mailing address on my new application was different to my previous address in the system there was a problem which made the process stall. No email, no notification, no call.

    • +1

My 28 degrees and Citibank cards (both CC and Debit) work ok.

There are a few ANZ and CommBank ATMs in Saigon that dispense in VND. pretty sure the conversion rate would be shat.

I did my forex at a Jewelry store which has pretty competitive rates. Having just returned earlier this month; the exchange rate i got was ~$100AUD:$1.70millionVND

      Cash is king in VN.

Also; if you plan to use uber/grab ride-sharing, then make sure to hook it up with a travel card that doesnt charge fees for paying in foreign currency.

      • thanks for the advice, i appreciate it! so maybe my best bet is to bring a bunch of AUD over and just look for a decent rate in HCM?

did you just apply for the visa directly from the consulate?

i'll link my uber with my velocity travel card :)

thanks again for the help, sorry for all the q's, gotta have this organised or else you can easily end up paying a lot more :(

        • +1

Nope i went through my mate with a travel business and it was a 5-year visa that you can get if you have/can prove Vietnamese Ancestry. Although Im pretty sure he can organize standard Visa's if need be as well. Send me a PM if you would like his contact.

As for the rate conversion; its upto you. As nightelves suggested, the Citibank option could be the go, but where i stayed it wasnt viable as ATMs were few and far between so the jewelry store was the go to.

Always happy to help out if i can so feel free to PM me if you need any Q's answered :)

      • +3

Think Citibank Plus Account has better rates than the jewelry store. We did a recent withdraw to test and as such you get yesterday's rate today with Visa.

        • Yes that has been my experience as well. Citibank rates are better. There is a citibank atm just as you exit airport security.

About 6 years ago you could get a better rate using cash at jewelerry stores but not anymore.

  • Wow, these flights are cheap as. If I didn't already have a $250 return flight booked to Bangers mid year I'd jump at this. Hopefully there will be a similar sale next year.

  • +1

    Any Brisbane prices?

GC is bit too out of my way.

    • +2

Air Asia doesn't fly out of Brisbane.

    • +2

I don't think you realise, travel-wise, how lucky you are living in SE Queensland. You guys have four airports, two of which are international. Even when every other capital city has a monopoly international airport - and therefore no competition for cheap flights (or even cheap airport parking for that matter) - you still choose to moan about an airport being 'a bit too out of my way'.

If you can't take advantage of a geographical advantage for cheap travel, you probably deserve to stay at home. Leave the bargains for those that want to make them work.

      • +2

        geographical advantage for cheap travel…

One of those airports is twice the distance to Sydney from Brisbane. Gold Coast is dearer to Asia than Melbourne in many deals.

        • One of those airports is twice the distance to Sydney from Brisbane

Really? Last I checked, Gold Coast was about 90km from BNE, and both are international airports. And while I agree some prices from Melbourne can be cheaper, OP was referring to Brisbane and Gold Coast.
