Motorola Moto Z Play 32GB $413.10 Delivered Expired (Price rise, now $436.50)

Fantastic price considering AUS stock is $699 at TGG (best previous deal was $559.20).

Motorola Moto Z Play DUAL SIM 32GB $427.50 Delivered

White is $9 more

Dual sim is 4G/3G standby so no issues. Delivered from HK (allow 1-2 weeks) with 1 year warranty.

Specs:

  • Qualcomm MSM8953 Snapdragon 625
  • Super AMOLED 5.5" Screen
  • 3510 mAh battery
  • microSD
  • 32 GB, 3 GB RAM
  • Fingerprint Sensor
  • 16 MP Camera

Band 28 (700mHz) and fantastic battery life with that processor and capacity combo.

Advantages of this over the $276 Moto G4 Plus 32GB:

  • 6.99m thick (vs 9.8mm)
  • Glass back & aluminum sides (more premium finish)
  • Super AMOLED display (vs IPS)
  • 3510 mAh Battery (vs 3000 mAh)
  • Snapdragon 625 processor (vs Snapdragon 617)
  • Max Clock Speed 2gHz (vs 1.5gHz)
  • Includes NFC (vs No NFC)
  • Includes 4K video (vs no 4K)
  • Includes USB Type-C (vs no USB-C)
  • Compatible with Moto Mods

Let me know if any errors/omissions. Overall it's a slightly step up, more premium design, slightly more powerful/newer processor and features such as NFC & USB Type-C. Still great value but a slightly step up in design and feature wise. If those things aren't important to you then stick with the Moto G4 Plus.

    Hamza I like your style.

    • +1

You should try his Domino's bargains.

  • Looks like a good price, amazing battery life if that's important to you (it should be!)

    • I'm tempted to sell my 5X and get this. I had a last gen Moto play until I broke it and its battery was forever (due to the huge battery and the low res screen). The best for Pokemon go.

  • +2

You forgot about moto mods. Good write up, good battery life (monster like battery life + Motorola being king of battery life).

    • +1

      Ah yes, thank you

    • +3

Battery on this phone is legit incredible. I've had the phone for a few months and get around 7-10 SOT with a charge.

  • I love my G4 Plus, but damn this is tempting.

  • (yes it's me again) i am still contemplating the moto x force (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/293082), this one and the G4 plus…

    • +1

Bought the x force from harvey norman. Could have cooked dinner on it, 64 degrees, antutu lower than my s5 due to throttling. V v quiet speaker. So much potential, ruined for me by that. This would be a battery monster and not slower in day to day as no throttling. Still, decided all just too big so s7 for me.

      • tks for sharing ur experience, seems i need to look else where…

but i did study online and a lot of review suggest it is fine (the throttling issue)

        • +2

Me too. You may get one that doesnt throttle. But it's no flagship, if only because the heat issues and barely audible speaker. I did read loads of reviews too! Maybe some have a mark 1 810 and some the mark 2?

    • +1

I have a Moto X Force from mobiciti, I xannot recommend it enough! So far it has been my best phone (I've owned, HTC One X, LG G2, G4, G Flex…).
I don't have throttling issues, battery life is a beast. The only ohone that I dare not to put a case on!
Only complaint would be the stupid mic holes which fill up with dust, and where on earth is nougat… Everything else is great.
Edit: also regarding to volume, it is pretty loud, near LG G4 loudness which is the loudest one speaker I've heard. Doesn't distort at high volume either compared to S7s I've seen.
I'd suggest going back to the shop you bought it from and request a fix as it doesn't sound like you've got a normal unit.

      • +1

Hi, that's interesting, maybe it's by batches? could I ask, what did you manage to get on antutu if you've ever tried that? Also, what temp did it get to? Mine never went below 42 degrees and went up to 64 and uncomfortable to hold.

re: the speaker, it was so wuiet, it sthere maybe a setting for it? the s5 is reasonably loud, although not 'THE loudest, I could watch something or listen to Spotify, but the x force seemed like the s5 on about half to two thirds volume, just too quiet.

Could be a duff unit, as you said, only going on my own experience, it would have been a nice phone otherwise I'm sure, I like the non intrusiveness of moto android, the moto g original was one of the simplest phones I ever owned!.

        • +1

I haven't tried antutu or any benchmark really since I don't believe in them, exihibt A all these cheap Chinese phones with high benchmarks but they suck in real life. Benchnakrs don't/ can't measure io latency, os implementation and other things that contribute to real life speed of a device.
I'll try it anyways and report back.
As far as speaker goes I can tell you thin thing is louder than what you explain, it is actually usable outside in noisy environments… So go figure? You probably have a faulty one.

And I'm also in love with little things they've done that has made android just that much better, the twist for camera, the twitch for Flash light. These are actually great!

One thing I have moticed though is that youtube lately slaughters my battery life and phone heats up. However this happens on my other phone as well so I will blame youtube app for it. Netflix on the other hand keeps the phone cool and I've actually had some of my best SOTs while watching netflix…
Today SOT is 3:45 hours and am at 15% as I type this.

        • +1

So ran the whole benchmark, while charging the phone so some heat due to charging.
Temp is 41C and that's max temp.
          Overall 61227
          3D: 27949
          UX: 16380
          CPU: 13386
          RAM: 3512

Don't know if these are good or not, but I can tell you it is faster and cooler than the old lgg4 that it replaced.

        • +1

          @OpayuOnam:

That's what mine was on at idle. My antutu was similar but the s5 scored the same, so just one of those things. Like you say, benchmarks don't give a day to day picture. The one I had must have just been from a duff batch then, or required a full reinstall of software.

I'm sure its an excellent phone those things notwithstanding, apparently the update to android patch from July onwards makes the volume lower as a bug but it's unlikely to be addressed until nougat, so again, don't know if it was mine or in general.

        • +1

@seraphim2017: I am not sure which update, as I had a notification for 'an' update back in December but the update couldn't go through due to me running root and custom bootloader and changing some of the system stuff, decided it's not worth it until I get the Nougat update.
Again, I have used other people's S5 and the performance is NOTHING compared to this phone. Not sure if S5 had that bug/feature were the phone would boost it self when it detects benchmark software… regardless of that, for as much I care a phone can benchmark infinity and run like a turd :D so as long as it runs smooth and I can switch between my apps without OS closing them all the time (looking at LG/Samsung/Xiaomi/HTC they rigorously destroy background apps) I am happy.
When I take my phone out of my pocket it is about 27-31degres but that is because of it being in my pocket, body heat etc… if it is seating on a desk, or overnight it is usually less than 25, pretty much ambient temperature.
rebooted the phone and re-ran the benchmark after all apps settled, and not charging this time; here's the result if anyone is interested:
          temp before bench: 31C
          temp after bench: 36C
          Overall 91582
          3D: 33387
          UX: 28729
          CPU: 23464
          RAM: 6002

And this here is the exact reason why I say benchmarks are crap, in both instances phone ran the same for me, in terms of browsing and text message IM etc… I don't game.

        • @seraphim2017:
I think it is safe to conclude:
          Yes there is thermal throttling
No it doesn't affect user experience
Happy they went this route rather than selling a pocket heater

        • @OpayuOnam: How did you get the phone Rooted ? There are so many different threads at XDA, I'm not sure which one to folllow…

        • @OpayuOnam:

tks soooo much for the thorough experience sharing on the x force. although i understand there is certain risk involved, i decide to give it a go. after all, 340-ish bucks for a phone with those kinda spec is still awesome bargain.

        • @jctdell : had a quick look and couldn't find the thread that I used for rooting.
But it was as simple as:
          Bootloader unlock
          Boot/flash twrp
          Flash Su zip

I didn't even use a PC, used my android tablet to do it.
Keep in mind there is two twrp files, one which is upside down and one which is correct orientation.
If you cannot find it let me know and I'll post the files and instructions.
          Cheers

        • +1

@Tyler Kwok: glad could help didn't really mean to pursued you or anything just shared what I have experienced with the phone in terms of performance. $340 is an absolute bargain!!! Got mine for $460-470 from mobiciti and couldn't be happier.
Word of advice first thing put a screen protector of some sorts of you don't want scratches, the replacement lenses are a bit hard to come by….

        • @OpayuOnam: I found quite a few threads on XDA , but many had connectivity issues later :(
I rather follow your "tried & tested " route . Do post your thread / instructions . Thanks again.

        • @jctdell: Sorry about the late reply, I actually couldn't find the forum post on xda anymore… luckily I usually copy and paste the guides I follow in a note pad :D
I've uploaded all I had, there is a readme there you can follow. I have included the driver as well just in case. There is another zip called logo which contains its own help and will help with removing the stupid "this phone is unlocked etc…" at boot.
          https://mega.nz/#!S1NWUIiD!oscz0L4g4c8E8s4VNoh3JWDuS_RE6bBZP…
Let me know if you have any questions.

        • @OpayuOnam: Hey mate , I just realized that we're on different pages :( You hv a rooted Moto X , while I'm buying a Moto Z play and attempting to root it ! My apologies for the confusion , and thanks again for yr kind efforts !

        • @jctdell: ah sorry if I gave you false hope XD
I think this thread is massively invaded by moto X
However I'm sure there will be some good method to root…
          Cheers

        • @OpayuOnam: bought the x force and used for a week, love the battery, the screen, the premium build, and the overall performance! yes running huge app or charging does get a bit hot but not an issue for me, as it does not affect performance. the major disappointment comes from the camera, as it is 1 level softer during day light and around 2 levels softer in low light, comparing to nexus 5x. however at 360 aud, it is still acceptable and really can't complain at all.

      • now im tempted again to try my luck on the moto x force… Grrrr… should i…

  • +3

Best. Phone. Ever. No regrets first phone I didn't want to upgrade after a few months.

That price makes this a top buy. I paid $550 and thought it was good at the time.

Yes the dual SIM is 4G+3G and works in USA no problem.

  • Bear in mind that G5 is nearly here. Don't know if Moto Z Play is also due for update.
I had a look when so many G4 Play Plus deals seemed to be around! Call me cynical.

looks like a possible replacement for my lg g4. hows the camera?

    • same boat as you.
      g4 camera is fantastic

    • Camera is descent. I put all camera phones in same bucket from "OK" or "crap" as when I want a quality picture I use a DSLR.

If you are only looking for a camera in the device then it maybe not for you.

I have taken 4K video (fireworks) with this phone and it was OK.

When I compared that with my Sony Z3 compact which would crap itself with heat after 5min this was cool as a cucumber for 16+ min.

One thing to mention is that this phone is quite rare in being a dual SIM phone with a dedicated MicroSD slot. Most dual SIM phones are sharing the 2nd SIM with the SD slot (up to 2TB)

If you can't find any real world samples let me know and I will upload.

      • thanks, but it went out of stock in my cart. went with htc 10

  • Did they raise the price by another $10?

    • Bit of a mess. The regular was $413.50 and dual sim $423 when posted the deal initially.

Regular went from $413.50 to $436.50 so expired that. Dual sim went $423 to $427.50 so edited that, but now black is out of stock and white is up to $436.50 and only 1 left anyway.

      Will expire the deal.

      • +1

Black dual sim $427.50 is back in stock.

        • Nice. Hamza, are you able to check if this phone supports B28? Cheers mate!

EDIT: Sorry, I saw that your post already says it does but the comment below makes me want to double check.

          @j4ck:

All good, yeah it's on the eBay listing also (700mHz), double checked elsewhere to make sure for the XT1635 Dual Sim:

        • @hamza23:

You are, the man. Thank you so much!

  • Not sure if this MOTO Z PLAY supports 4G band 28. Even on the website it has 700hz, don't know which 700hz band it means.

can i claim GST refund from TRS?

    • No this is overseas stock, no GST applicable.

  • shipping is damn quick. left hong kong within hours and will hit my door in under 48 hours. very impressed.

    • Where do you live and how do you know it will arrive in 2 days?
I bought the g4plus from DWI and I'm expecting 2 weeks wait to SA…

      • G4 Plus arrived in 3 days to SA, see here, although the estimated delivery was much longer - guess that is worst case scenario if they don't have stock on hand or similar. It got to melbourne yesterday so would only take 2 days for those in VIC.

        • 3 days also for me in SA! impressive.
It's labelled "lithium battery" on the customs form…

        • what is the back cover you have received?

    • Should I be expecting sealed packaging because the box I received is not factory sealed.

  • Should I be expecting sealed packaging? Because the box I received is not factory sealed.

    • Apparently it's okay, the G4 Plus received here also had broken seal but everything looked brand new and sealed inside, I'm thinking customs open it due to lithium battery? Not 100% sure.

What was your question about the back cover?

      • i have the woody cover instead of the standard cover shown in the advertisement so i am wondering whether has it been changed.

        • I didn't order a Moto Z Play sorry, hopefully someone else who has it can help.

However I found this unboxing video and it would appear it comes with a woodgrain cover as an included extra, is that the same one you are referring to? If so then it's completely normal, assuming it's in the box and not actually on the phone?

        • +1

thank you! Yeah that is the same cover.
