Too bad it doesn't have thunderbolt. Otherwise instant buy from me. No thunderbolt means no egpu in the future.

    • +3

      External GPUs are seriously overrated.

      • +8

I completely agree - the price you pay for an enclosure is ridiculous. You might as well just get an additional desktop.

        • +2

not to mention the 20%-40% performance hit vs the desktop.

        • Aren't tb enclosures only like $200? They were even cheaper, like $80 for the interface when we were still using expresscard 2

        • +7

@tony abbott: No, they're a fair bit more than that.

Either way the CPU performance of this is so comparatively low, it'll be slower than a $150 i3. You could literally build a $500 PC (without GPU) that will have more CPU grunt than this, so it makes no sense to use this with an eGPU.

Ultimately, I think eGPUs are a viable solution for something like an XPS 15 or otherwise with a 6700HQ or something of that calibre so that you can basically just dock it in when you're home to play some games or when you need a bit more GPU grunt. They're really not for this class of machine.

For me, there are only two types of people who buy 13" ultrabooks - 1) people who literally don't need anymore grunt and will use it as their primary machine, perhaps connecting it to a monitor at home; 2) people who already have a desktop and just want something small and light to take on the road. Neither will have any use for eGPU.

        • @psterio:

          https://www.techinferno.com/index.php?/forums/topic/5661-us1…

Us$200 or so for a tb2 enclosure. If you're buying razer core or whatever you're just asking to be ripped off.

I used a lenovo x230 with a expresscard vidock with gtx550ti a few years ago. It was cheap and great, without having to buy a full gaming pc. Currently using a dell e7270 ultrabook without thunderbolt unfortunately. Playing overwatch at minesweeper graphics quality

        • +1

@tony abbott: That appears to be a thunderbolt 2 enclosure, which means severe bottlenecks for any recent gpu.
Also the PSU seems to be a 60w unit which isn't enough for high end cards.

        • @psterio: Even then with the xps you would have to pay for an external monitor if you don't want massive bottlenecks (not being able to use the infinity edge display is seriously a turn off for me). Makes a lot more sense to build a desktop or buy something with a better internal gpu from the beginning.

        • +1

When you go down this route, you may as well do Steam / XB1 / PSN streaming from another box onto your Ultrabook.. Considering both consoles are under $300 and less than buying a chassis + GPU

        • @bchliu:

          I've a 2.3kg laptop from 2012. i7 quad core with nvidia Gt650M.

Reason why is I just want one device for everything. Not have a fat cumbersome desktop. I rather pay 2k for a one sized fit all mobile + battery life + egpu at home rather than 2 devices at 1k each since I need to refresh my laptop too. (don't even have an external monitor atm) (maybe I'll get the t470s or x1 carbon 2017 version and import the akitio node.

        • +3

@Zhotan: you'll pay a huge premium though or suffer a performance hit, I know it seems more efficient to have one device but for now it's definitely not, you can do a very small itx build + have an ultrabook, for less than the cost of a beast laptop and an egpu enclosure and GPU

        • +1

@Zhotan: People buy laptops for very different reasons. As much as we'd all like something which is super power and super light etc, it just isnt Physically feasible at this stage in technology. As much as you bought a "all rounder", some people buy a laptop for portability.. some buy it for gaming, some buy it for study etc. You dont necessarily buy an Ultrabook for the purposes of Gaming or heavy rendering since there's much better Desktop replacement laptops that does it magnitudes quicker.
The argument is more about "Fit for purpose" and if you are really after gaming, then go for a gaming laptop (if portability is also required). Ultrabooks are for those people who are on the run all day in and out of meetings or between physical locations that want to reduce their carryload from a ~2.5kg machine to a ~@1kg machine. If you really want to use your ultrabook to play games, then there's plenty of other methods to do so (as I listed - XB / PSN / Steam Streaming or even Cloud Gaming solutions).

        • @psterio: $150 i3? Pentium G4560 would whip this little guy into the ground and it's $75 AUD :)

    • Still a while away before it's practical isn't it?

    • +1

I wanted to go down this route around six months ago when it seemed like we were almost there, the reality is its seemed like its almost there for years now, and it will probably still be a few more years until its a viable route.

Realistically you can build your own desktop that will be faster than any ultrabook without the performance hit for about the same price as an enclosure

      Intel G4560 3.5Ghz 2c 4t $80
      mobo $80
      case and PSU $100
      Ram $60

So for $320 probably cheaper than most enclosures you can just drop whatever GPU you want in, no size, power or driver restrictions.

    • +1

Why the crap do you want to game on an ultrabook anyway? Game on a computer with 4 cores and a GPU

      • -1

Because I'm not as heavy a gamer as I used to be anymore?

        • +1

          Then get a gaming laptop.

        • @sillysam:

Because I already am using a laptop? Unless you can find me a gaming laptop at 1.4kg with great battery life.

        • -1

@Zhotan: Buy two laptops - one for gaming at home and an ultrabook for moving about.

  • +2

Here's a review of this laptop (keep in mind there are different variants of this laptop!): http://www.notebookcheck.net/Asus-Zenbook-UX330UA-Notebook-R…

  • Does anybody know what the warranty policy is like on this laptop? Is ASUS warranty international ?

    • +1

ASUS usually does international warranty (not 100% sure though)

    • +9

I purchased 2 Asus laptops from Amazon. Amazon listing says 1 year international warranty (and enclosed warranty card) but I have since contacted Asus Australia and they will not provide warranty for either unit. I have escalated it within Asus but they will not honour it and will charge for any repairs needed. In summary, don't expect any warranty from Asus Australia even if the unit is sold with international warranty!

      • +1

Open a live chat with amazon and they'll do something about it

        • +2

Yes, I have done. They will accept me returning the laptops at my expense, which is not ideal… My units do not have a fault so I don't actually need any warranty immediately, it's just annoyed me that they are advertised with international warranty but do not honour it. Amazon are not willing to contact Asus.

  • +1

Tells me that the item doesn't ship to Australia. Using my mobile.

    • +1

      Price $699.00
      AmazonGlobal Shipping + $19.34
Estimated Import Fees Deposit + $0.00

Does appear to ship to Oz on the full site.

  • +1

I note it says this on the post "Special Shipping Information: Due to federal and international regulations, this product can only be shipped within the continental United States. "

  • +6

See my post re ASUS Amazon order only last month.

Ultrabook arrived with defective screen. (Red line across screen).

Amazon at first would not pay for return shipping (cost $82 AUD via Intl courier from Australia Post - that was cheapest - quotes from DHL,Packandsend,UPS,FedEx ranged from $150 to $350).

In the end I kept at them and they refunded without return first and also credited for return shipping. Worked out I didn't loose a cent but lots of time wasting.

FYI. ASUS international warranty seems to be worthless according to other members who posted in that thread.

    • Wait so you got a free laptop?

      • i want to know this too

      • He got credited for return shipping so I assume he returned the laptop.

        • +1

          Correct

      • +1

        No i returned the laptop.

    • So in the end after alot of pushing and shoving you got it repaired at their expense.
I'm looking at the xiaomi laptop too but it would have warrenty under the seller, Bang Good, an asian online retailer…

not sure who'd be worse in this case

  • So this or the Dell XPS 13? Am I missing something or has this got very similar specs as the Dell, but a few hundred dollars cheaper? Or is the Dell even smaller?

    • xps13 will be smaller.
i use a 11 inch sleeve for it.
      it has slimer bezels

edit: this is $400 cheaper, similar specs. both good laptops. zenbook was the early benchmark of ultrabook until xps13 took over (personal opinion)

      zenbook 8.7 x 12.7 x 0.5 inches
      xps13 7.87 x 11.98 x 0.59 inches

      slightly thicker but smaller

  • What's the correct weight for this? The Amazon page says 2.6 pounds (1.2 kg)

  • good alternative to xps 13.

  • The XPS 13 has a Type-C port btw

    • +2

      as does this

  • Man am so in the market but some of these ultra books are overpriced was looking at the cfonline.com.au refurbished but they are relatively older models. Backlit keyboard would be nice also

    • +1

The build quality and specs are worth it for a lot of these Ultrabooks

  • Couldn't see it listed on the amazon page, does this have dedicated graphics card?

  • +1

Just purchased one ok. Shipping to Syd Metro. No issues. Total bill was USD$723.74 (aprox $946AUD)
Note - as this is (just) over the $900 import limit I may be hit for a bit more?

This is a great deal and many good reviews. Dont sweat buying the i7 version (~$1400) because everything I read is that i7s in an ultrabook hit the thermal limit real quick and become i5's :)

    • low voltage i7s are i5s with higher frequency.

    • +3

Friend, The import limit is $1000, not $900.

      • +1

        You are indeed correct.
$1000 AUD threshold, calculated on the item only.
If you break the threshold, then the amount payable is on both item and shippomg cost, 10% of the total here.
        + $50 customs fee.

If you buy only this item, you will be fine, as Siddeeqi al-Hammoud has implied.

        • theres a $50 customs fee too? hadnt heard of that before

        • @blaze:
          Its called "processing fee".
          linky

  • I got a similar spec but without finger print reader a few months back. Good laptop with good backlit keyboard. Downsides are limited screen foldback angle and it comes with micro HDMI rather than full size HDMI.

  • +2

I noted on the amazon site it says under "see more details" the unit has Intel HD Graphics 520 Integrated
This is not correct. The i5 7200U actually comes with the slightly faster and better Intel® HD Graphics 620
    https://ark.intel.com/products/95443/Intel-Core-i5-7200U-Pro…
    minor, but just saying :)

    • Thanks, I was on mobile so missed that part, Based on this I'm leaning more towards buying the xiaomi mi air, similar price older CPU but with a discrete gpu,

  • +2

I have a previous Zenbook 13.3 model that I bought in 2016 which has been working flawlessly. Loved every second of using it till today. I bought it from Costco for 1200. Those people hesitant to buy online enquire at your local Costco store they will likely have zenbooks.

    -strong performance
    -great graphics
    -handle casual gaming very well
    -great battery
    -ultra portable, lightweight
    - great speakers

    • +1

Except yours is 1.45kg.. The ux303 + 940m am I Right? You got an insane deal from costco.
I upgraded my ssd and ram, replaced thermal compound for good measure.
      This is 1.8kg..
Kind of heavy for a 13.3" ultrabook

      • Yes it is ux303 + 940m. Costco has the best prices. It was more expensive to buy online at the time ~1400-1600 and way more expensive in Aus ~1800-2200.

Yeah 1.8 kg is heavy but if it's meeting your needs then doesn't matter.

  • I'm literally so tempted to get this before flying to Europe in July but I've been so hit/miss with windows lately..

Although at least I can get 4 of these in contrast to the MBP I'm looking at :O

    • +1

Yeah that's how I see it - can easily buy one and upgrade every year for probably a decade (sell the old one)… and still come out on top of a super pricey laptop !

  • +2

For refernce this UX330UA-AH54 model is 2.6lbs weight (thats 1.2kg in our world) and 13.5mm thick
    http://laptopsuggest.com/reviews/asus-zenbook-ux330ua-ah54-r…
    https://www.asus.com/us/Notebooks/ASUS-ZenBook-UX330UA/

    • Why does it say 1.8kg in the description? 1.2kg sounds a bit more reasonable but yeah.. Strange

      • +3

description updated. i used the description at the top of the page that's linked which is incorrect. 1.2kg is the correct weight

  • What cards have no conversion fees, 28degrees?

    • +1

Citibank plus transaction account (debit card) also does the transaction at spot rate.

      • If I purchase this with a debit card (AUD) but pay for it in USD will I get charged a conversion fee?

        • +1

Not if you use citibank's debit card linked to the account.
          Other banks probably will though

    • Bankwest platinum (which also has free travel insurance when you book return flights over $500 with it)

  • +1

For anyone looking for a zenbook, don't buy a ux303. Uses a weak plastic hinge. Will start to disintegrate and your screen will fall off.

    • Make sure you buy extended warranty for that bad boy. I have one and mine got rekt.
After warranty replacement it's all good.
Do they still make new variants of the ux303?

      • +1

I don't think they make ux303 variants. I didn't buy the extended warranty (can I still get it?), but no way was I going to let them get away with such a huge design floor. When it happens again in another 12-14 months they're gonna replace the hinge at no cost to me, warranty or not

        • I didn't buy the extended warranty (can I still get it?)

If your warranty is still active yep.

  • Good price! The one I really want is the UX390UA - incredible form, weighing in at approx 900g… drool.

  • The screen only folds upto 110 degrees I hear. Is that okay for Sydney trains ?

  • I still think business laptops are a better buy at this price (refurbished of course).

    • used x1c would kill this thing for price/perf but this is still faster

      • Your comment makes no sense how can something be faster but still not win at price/performance?

        • It's fast for the price
But this ultrabook is still faster
Especially graphics-wise, the new intel iGPUs are better

        • @Droidyy: ah I get it sorry my bad I think I am having a "slow" day haha lol

  • for those looking to use OSX, there is a thread here. https://www.tonymacx86.com/threads/guide-install-el-capitan-…

    • +2

      "What's working ?
EVERYTHING (SDCARD, USB etc) except Wi-fi and touchpad"

  • +1

yup. I just got a new wifi card from ebay to fix that. The touchpad seems to have a workaround as ps2 emulation. Need to explore. Hackintoshing isnt for the faint hearted. Its a challenge !

  • Actually, the Amazon Currency Converter is actually cheaper than most banks if you don't have access to fees.

I have a $4.50 cable but with that mine came to a total of:

    • Amazon Currency Converter (AUD 989.45)
    • Commonwealth Bank (AUD $1050)

I called up commonwealth to confirm how much I'd be paying if I bought in USD. They charge a 3% rate of the total price. Amazon has horrible rates 63c USD to $1 AUD but in total it's cheaper than Commonwealth doing 73c USD to $1 AUD and charging 3% on top of that.

Someone please let me know if I am wrong because I haven't bought it yet but I'm at the order page.

    • +1

I meant if you don't have access to a conversion free bank card

      • Most cards still charge fees on international transaction regardless of currency. Even you choose Amazon Currency Converter in AUD, Commbank still charge 3% on top because the transaction is done outside Australia.
Yes this is a rip-off fee because Visa/Master do all the work on forex and the banks just pocket 3% free money.
Read your PDS to make sure the actual fees on your card.

        • Well crap I just bought it last night with the Amazon Currency converter.. I still think $989 + 3% is smaller than $1050. Hopefully I won't get hit by the import tax. FWIW I told commonwealth bank how much USD I was planning to spend and their calculator/program quoted $1050 so yeah. :/

I'm wondering what else could have been added on from the software program for the customer service rep to tell me it was $1050? Even with better rates that should technically still be lower than what amazon charged me.

        • @Arick: Amazon will not charge your card until it is ready to ship. Login to your account and you can cancel the order if it's still being processed.
Cancel and order again if you want to.

        • @Arick:

They charge 3% on all overseas transactions now. I'll cancel the order and use a card with no fees. Anything over $1000 and you'll need to pay import tax. Another $200 right there. Bit risky imo.

  • Has anyone bought this? I bought it with the express shipping with DHL and it got returned before even leaving the US. DHL says it is considered as "Dangerous Good". Have anyone experienced this?

    • +1

yeah same or at least assume it's the same; mine only stated returned to seller. contacted Amazon via chat and they are sending out a new one. makes me wonder if it'll be DHL again though…

      • so my replacement still hasn't shipped so I contacted chat again and they changed delivery to priority. When I pointed out that I paid for delivery so I'd have it by tomorrow they also reimbursed me the full shipping costs (not just the surcharge for express). I can live with that. :)

        • Well, I guess I should get my shipping reimbursed as well. And yeah, they still haven't shipped my replacement as well.

        • @phobiaswan:
Yep mine got returned to shipper TWICE and I got my shipping fee refunded…still waiting on refund though. I even paid for express.

    • Also found this on auspost website:
Shipments of electronic items containing lithium cells and batteries are prohibited when sent using the International Courier product

Will wait to see what happens with UPS

      • +2

Tracking says my replacement with UPS arrived in Botany AU. Looks the good. Fingers crossed everything go smooth from here

  • my guess is the lithium batteries inside. A lot of airlines refuse to carry now.

    • Since when?
Most airlines allow up to 100Wh.

  • +1

I checked mine and yes, its on hold for 6 days now (UPS iparcel) stating "Your shipment has been flagged for review of the contents prior to export"
So i have emailed them. Might call them as well.
