  • The continual Surface Pro discounts must mean the SP5 is soon. Come on MS!

    • The rumours are this month.

      • +1

Last month, the rumour was last month.

  • HP Stream 11-r007tu 11.6" Laptop is possible to do price match with Officeworks for 5% discount.

    • Might have a hard time finding stock. Got some new model now.

  • The Nikon D5200 is now 4 years old so I wouldn't call that a bargain. Albeit, DLSRs haven't really advanced much during that time compared to their smaller siblings.

    • Still a pretty decent camera. It doesn't have inbuilt WiFi (you have to but an adaptor) but other than that is has a good last of specifications.

      • Would that be a good dslr for beginners?

        • +2

          Perfect.

        • @Gershom:
          Thanks mate :)

        • +1

@montorola: Sorry for late reply but I think it would be. You can learn how to get great quality photos with it. It had more features to play with than the base models. Also isn't so expensive that you are going to lose a lot of money if you choose to sell it (decide dslr photography isn't for you).

  • Anyone got a Lenovo IdeaPad 100S & wondering if any good as just a home laptop for office, facebook, youtube & connecting wirelessly to media centre.

    • +1

I have one and love it

    • Damn, the 32gb would be cutting it tight (yes I know you can use cloud and all that)

      • It has a micro sd card slot

    • +1

I have one and I use it as virtual desktop for work at home and on the train or not in the office

      its good for the price..

    • If it's not good for that then I don't know what else it would be good for.

    • +1

I use mine when traveling, hotspot from my phone. Excellent. Paid about $230 and would do so again. At this price giving them away.
Edit: obviously I don't store much on it

I wonder if it can run Age of Empires 2 on steam..

      • +1

Jokes aside, that is a brilliant game!!

        • +1

100% agree with you. I play it now with a group of friends and my wife .. This is how we spend our weekends! We are in our mid 20's. lol..

I bought one online 10 days ago, and got a call 2 days ago saying the supplier didn't have any available and wasn't sure when they were getting more in. Buyer beware

    • It's alright. I bought one for my grandfather for basic email/word processing and it seems to handle that with no problems. Also no worries with YouTube, but can be a bit sluggish browsing Facebook (the Windows 10 FB app is great and fixes that though).

Keyboard on the other hand is very average. Not sure if it was just the unit I got, but the spacebar was very inconsistent and required a bit of force. Keys have a weird feel to them and there's a lot of flex on the keyboard (the HP Stream 11 for $190 has a much, much better keyboard overall, especially for extended typing sessions).

That's the cheapest price for the Asus Transformer T100HA (Windows 10 tablet). Grey imports are $350. Comparable name-brand models are about $400.

What's with all this decent pricing from Gerry?

    • +3

      He's hardly normal these days

    • +3

Amazon incoming. Off loading as many stuff as he can. Gerry senses something…

I felt a great disturbance in the retail Force, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced.

I fear something terrible has happened.

        • Gerry the Hut

        • +3

@bargainhunter: Gerry is more of a toydarian, like Watto. The Hutts are better represented by people who inherited mining wealth, Gina the hutt for example

        • +2

@buckster: I had to look up Watto the toydarian but your characterisations seem apt. Double t in Hutt too eh? I was thinking of Pizza the Hut, speaking of Gina.

  • No powerbanks????

  • Hi all, I'm not too technology savvy. I bought a cheap acer laptop January 2014 in this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/129596

Its starting to load slowly and looking for an upgrade just for watching kodi, streaming video and that's about it. The $174 Lenovo has 2 gig ram like my current laptop. Will it actually tun any faster than my current unit? I did think of a mi box but thought the laptop gives me more options for using etc.

    • No the Lenovo won't be faster than your current Acer. The Acer has a decent Pentium B960 while Lenovo has a slow Bay Trail Atom.

      • +1

well actually it might be. that 2 yr old computer would probably be bloated as hell now. it also had a spinning disk. whilst the CPU was better, the HDD is faster (but smaller) in the new one.

still not worth the 'upgrade' though.

        • Yeah probably more worth it to upgrade the RAM and SSD of his old laptop.

    • upgrade to SSD might help, B960 is almost 80% faster than atom

    • Try doing a factory reset after saving your wanted files etc, upgrading ram 2 GB or 4 GB, swapping hhd to ssd if you really want to speed it up.

Should be as fast as most new $300-$400 laptops sold still today.

  • Lenovo Yoga 910-5D for $1599 has me tempted….

Their live chat is very informative.

Hello Ozbargainer - Need any advice, talk to a expert now.
Hello [HN rep]. Yes, i'm having trouble deciding what to have for breakfast. Weetbix or cornflakes, that's the issue.
    Weetbix for sure
    OK, thanks.
Bye for now have a lovely day :)

  • Can you upgrade the RAM/change the HDD to a SSD on the lenovo ideapad 100s?

    • +2

100s wont have a HDD at that size @32GB, probably eMMC.
Ram - not sure but most likely soldered on.
The 15.6" lenovo with the 1TB HDD should be able to be upgraded though.

  • hp or ideapad?

    • +1

I had personal bad experience with HP laptops. Will never touch this brand again.

  • Random question for folk…

Can anyone suggest a super cheap laptop circa $250-$300 that has as powerful a processor as i can get?
It will be mostly plugged in, with an external screen and keyboard, so battery life and screen hardly matters.

Second hand Thinkpad T430 with a core i5 Ivy Bridge processor from ebay

      Protip: provide your own ssd

        • I'd say so - the i5-3320M was developed under the codename Ivy Bridge.

While i didn't mention it earlier, i'm comparing it against the N3710 and there's no doubt this older CPU has a bigger kick.
          What i really need is a T430 with a cactus screen…

Thanks scrimshaw for kicking me off.

        • try to look for one with a better display, there are some with shitty TN panels and some with higher resolution FHD IPS displays. It may cost more though

  • Did some quick searching re: linux compatibility with the Ideapad 100S and it seems like quite a tedious process. It's quite difficult to install a stock Win 10 image as well for example. The problems include a weird 32bit UEFI and very poor driver support within the linux kernel.

There is a specialised Ubuntu distro out there compiled for Atom based PCs though:

    https://linuxiumcomau.blogspot.com/

    https://wiki.debian.org/InstallingDebianOn/Lenovo/100S-11IBY…

    http://mistyrebootfiles.altervista.org/documents/100s/index.… (LTSB on 100s)

For this reason the HP seems like the better laptop.

  • Anyone know the difference between the 100S-8P and the 100S? Is it worth the price difference??

  • +2

Thanks for posting this, I bought a Lenovo Ideapad 100s for $174.
It may have pretty poor spec, but after removing a lot of rubbish from the HDD I now have 15GB free.

I also turned off many Windows "features" which would be running in the background and it's actually quite spritely at surfing internet, which is all I will be using it for.

Streams HD Youtube & facebook videos without a problem, speakers are a little tinny though.

    Very happy
