  • Hi

Just wondering, did they offer warranty? and if so for how long?

Been eyeing the RX100 range for a long time, and may consider a refurbished model down the line if it is worth it for the price

    Thanks for the post

edit: ah wait nvm, just saw the 12 month warranty flair up top

  • +1

does it come with tax invoice for refurbished goods?

    • +19

      Nah none, you just a paper saying;
      "Gembel buy camera"

Of course it would, Sony is a legit company with an integrated supply chain where the invoice is printed and placed in the box when the item is picked from the warehouse.
Gah it's such a basic concept.

      • +12

I interpreted his question as 'is there gst on refurbished/2nd hand goods and can i claim the gst'

        • +1

          So did I.

        • +1

Anyone operating a business who's main source of income is selling stuff must pay GST on what they sell (unless you're smashing up gold bullion and selling it as scrap).

So… GST invoice will be provided and you can claim it on your way out of the country.

        • +1

@braddsey: I bought something from Cash Converters' online shop a while back. I picked it up from the store. There was no GST on the invoice. Thought that was a bit unusual.

Just checked another invoice for an item purchased directly from the same store, and there's no GST either. Checked an invoice from another store and there's GST. Maybe it's just that one store that's a bit dodgy.

        • +1

@eug: Should definitely be GST on items from Cash Converters… though those businesses aren't exactly known for their high moral business practices!

      • Lol I wish Sony did that for commercial orders. We have to wait for the invoices to come seperately -.-

    • Yep

Be aware that the eBay feedback score for Sony Australia is 95.5%! I usually try avoid any seller under 99%.
Reading the feedback reviews, there seem to be many issues with bad communication and delays in delivery.

    • In their last eBay deal I bought a car CD player, and when it hasn't even been shipped a couple of days after it was supposed delivered, I contacted them and the item was out of stock so I was refunded. It was in stock when I bought it, and missed out on an affordable item due to their mismanagement. Not Sonny eBay again.

    • +7

From personal experience, their customer service is terrible. It feels like it's run by 1 person who's working part-time. When you called the number, they'll tell you ebay sales is a separate division and asked you to leave name/number. Then, they'll never call you back.
Also, it's not possible to change the name in the tax invoice - even when the item has not yet been delivered. Last time, I bought a camera on behalf of my mate who's a tourist. The thing is ebay will automatically use your name and address. I sent a message immediately requesting the receipt's name to be changed to my mate so he can claim gst when he leaves the country. They said, their system doesn't allow that.

    • I bought a shoulder strap leather case from them for rx100 iii. It was missing the strap.. and was sold as 'as new'. They wouldn't give me a partial refund and only full refund if i send it back and pay for shipping.

      Pretty shit tbh

Logged in just to reply to this :). Sorry in advance for this being a long post but thought this might be help someone.

Bought a refurbished camera from them recently. The camera did not arrive by the date mentioned on their ebay post. When I contacted them I was told that it might take another 10 odd days as the products can normally take up 20 odd working days. when I complained they replied back asking me to their policy. I was angry as to why they wouldnt then just put that as the expected date of delivery on their actual post but decided to look past it.

Next, they eventually after 10 odd days sent me an email says that the camera is on its way and coming via DHL. Waited 2 days and nothing so decided to check the DHL link. Got a message saying that the number doesnt exists. Called them em up and they knew nothing about it. left a request to try and figure out where my camera was.

Looked up the phone number for sony support from the invoice, called em and they person who picked up the phone said that they dont look after Sony ebay. When i got angry he logged a complaint and said he'll follow up with ebay people and I should expect a call day after. 2 days and nothing.

Eventually got another tracking number - this time via TOLL. This time it took another 2 working days and eventually the camera was delivered.

Good product and have had no issue with the refurbished camera but will I buy from Sony ebay again. probably not.

    • Same as above. Bought a action cam and the lens was scratched. Took about 10 calls and a paypal dispute to get the money back.

Paying $780+ for Refurbished ? I would think twice..

    • I was about to say no! ..its just damaged box.. But only at that point I realized that its refurb + damaged box, that isn't being mentioned much here.

  • +4

For what it's worth, the listing now appears to say "(Box Damaged)" not "(Refurbished)".

It probably makes it a more appealing offer as that's a massive saving for only a damaged box.

  • +6

Not a bad deal for $783 but would be wary of a refurb unit however I think this may just be damaged packaging. The V is out now and may see further reductions for the IV.

I had a play with a V at Yodabashi Camera in Japan (best store I've ever been in, think I spent 1 hour testing out different high end headphones) and I think if you can get a brand new IV for 700ish I'd still go with it. For reference I paid $1100 in Nov 2015 for my IV from a similar ebay sale but from Paxtons. I also got the GST back on top.

I am really happy with my IV, I have taken it to several countries and although I am a complete photography noob I feel like I have taken photos for some good memories.

      Nice photos

      • Thanks mate, superior auto mode on the camera works pretty well :)

    • Honestly wow, nice pics!

Btw, How did you manage to not come across even one person??

    • Did you put a vignetting filter in post or does the camera vignette like that all the time?

      • The camera is doing it afaik, since he was saying he took the photos in auto mode.

        • +1

          Nah I put it in

    • Gotta love Yosemite.

  • +3

    Fantastic little camera

  • This or a5000?

    • +1

      This.

But a6000 with good lens > IV

    • +1

A lens similar to the rx100 v to mount on the a5000 will be expensive

    • rx100 is pocketable… a5000 will have better quality photos.

  • Must be all the ones i returned….. heaps came brand new out of box with dints and scratches, said no way i would accept that and returned them.

    That said, great camera!

  • +1

Ugh this deal is so tempting at this price. Holding out because I don't 'need need' a camera right now, and because of the lack of touchscreen which I've become used to on my Oly. Still, apparently this is the travel camera to get.

    • I'm in the same boat, camera broke on my last holiday but next holiday might not be for a while. Still, I'd like something for day hikes and just general photo taking in the city.

There are other good options around even if the RX100 is the best image quality. LX10 has faster focus and a touch screen, can go with the TZ110 for zoom range, plus both are cheaper.

Just a shame the DL18-50 was cancelled, that looked to be the perfect travel camera.

      • Yep, the DL18-50 would have been a game changer. Sad to see it was so close as well (all the specs released, even a few reviews completed, pre-orders available.) Would have had a touchscreen, and had that amazing ultra wide 18mm focal length that would have been perfect for landscape and architecture. Sadly there seems to be no ultra wide compact cameras planned in the near future. Also, how would you rate Canon's compact camera lineup compared to the competition? And wow, I didn't even realise the LX10 existed - seems to be the best of both worlds with a better image than Canon and the touchscreen and 5 axis OIS. Pipedream, but if Panasonic could release the LX100 mark 2, fix the lens flare issue, put in the 5 axis IBS, maybe make the lens wider - even though it would be really bulky I would seriously consider not even waiting a year or two before getting it, oh well, have to wait till next photokina to get as excited again.

  • I don't need a camera either but I have the original MKI which my parents just took overseas and I am amazed by how awesome EVERY single shit is!

This current one must beat every single point & shoot available right now!

    • +2

Turn your shit photos into a sharp shit photos with plenty of bokeh

      • I meant to say 'SHOT IS'… so sorry.. I am ashamed!

Purchased last night. ETA from Ebay was 21/03. Got an email from Ebay stating that my order has been shipped with a tracking number supplied. ETA from Toll is 16/03.

    • +1

      awww lucky

mine just says standard courier ETA 22nd

    • Just wondering if it arrived today as the ETA claimed? Any verdict on the condition of the camera/box?

      • +3

Hi. Actually, they tried to delivery it yesterday! One day after placing the order. However, the postcode I used shares two suburb names and there was a mix up (not sure who was at fault) and so Toll was unable to deliver it. A quick call to Toll fixed it up and they delivered it today.

The camera arrived in the original box with a Sony quality assurance seal sticker "check contents if seal is broken". Seal was not broken. The box was in great shape with slight damage to one of the corners. Despite this, I believe it could have easily been sold in this box in a retail store. Pictures of the box in the following link: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/ukqwdt8tzzc12e1/AACq85SZCiKQTlZjA…

I haven't had much time to play with it and it is currently charging. I've turned it on to take a few pictures (no memory card) and set the date/time. No issues. During my initial inspection, I could not identify any scratches on the camera or any other defects (minor or major). The unit looks completely brand new! The manuals were also crisp and looked as though they have never been opened. All the items in the box were correctly packaged (based on unboxing videos, same coloured bags, cable ties, etc.).

Really happy with the purchase. Hopefully no issues will arise in the near future. I will have more time to play with it over the weekend.

Edit: Not cable tie. The one where you twist. Not sure what it's called…

        • +1

Brilliant write-up, thanks for the photos as well. Congrats on your purchase :)

Think I might just pull the trigger on this one!

        • +1

@Mega Vanillish: Several others have received their cameras too (see below). They've reiterated my statement of it being brand new. This may convince you to purchase :)

  • we got a mk3 from the sony ebay refurb store a few years ago in a similar sale. I think it might have been box damaged like these. There was no sign of anything wrong with any of it, basically just got a brand new unit for cheap, and its still going strong after a few trips and the gf taking it out often. I don't know why they bothered to discount it, but it's a good sign if you're interested in picking one of these up.

  • Got a rx100 iii, can say that the rx100 is an amazing compact series!

  • Great camera, got the Mark III, excellent alternative when I can't take the DSLR.

  • I'm very tempted by this - like many other Ozbargainers i'm traveling to Japan shortly - past trips to Japan have taught me that Sony cameras (in particular 1 generation old models) are cheap over there - is this still the case or should I pull the trigger on this deal ??

    • If you can get to the Yodabashi store then I would wait, especially considering DUTY FREE.

      • +1

Currently in Osaka, my RX100M3 just broke so I was in BIC camera today looking at a possible replacement. As far as I remember, the prices were okay, but not cheaper than this deal. Will go back to get some accurate prices if anyone is interested.

      • +1

Thanks for giving me a store tip - their online store has the model at around $1200AUD (inc tax) so if their tax is ?? 10% I think this deal is still possibly a winner.

        http://www.yodobashi.com/%E3%82%BD%E3%83%8B%E3%83%BC-SONY-DS…

        • Consumption tax in Japan is 8%

      • If you have a Visa, don't forget that they offer a 5% discount at BIC, Yodobashi, and a whole bunch of others.

Make sure you bring your passport with you if you want to claim tax back.

    • For your information. Sony cameras sold in Japan are in "Japanese" language only for domestic market. They are not multiple languages like sold overseas.

      • +4

Confirming that I played with a RX100 V at a Yodabashi store last week and could not find an english menu option, I also could not find export models (They had about 3 different displays with the RX100).
The M5 was about $1300 ish and the M4 was about $1000 after 5% visa discount.

This was in a Yodabashi in Osaka so it could be different elsewhere.

  • +2

Good price on this camera and cheaper then the used price.
Camera takes good photos/video and travel friendly being small and light. They are easy to break though which won't be covered by warranty in any form. I've broken the lens on mine last years trip and my recent one the motherboard is shorting due to some liquid getting in.

    • We as Australians are covered by some pretty nice un-avoidable terms for purchases, depending on your ability to fight it out, breaks that really shouldn't be happening due to a build quality problem should be covered. Can't comment much more on this though as everything I own is Canon.

  • +6

Ordered one on 14/03 and it's delivered just now. It looks like brand new to me though, no damage on box, no dent/scratch on the camera and all accessories are sealed and brand new.

    • +1

Glad to hear it! Received mine today as well and it also looks brand new.

      • +3

Got mine today as well, original eta was 22/03 with standard courier, ended up getting a tracking number for dhl

However tracking number linked to an unidentifiable dhl package, checked number with toll as I knew yours was with toll and got an eta for 17th

Ended up getting a pleasant surprise this morning from toll that said the package would be sent today.

Camera was same condition as above posters, very happy with purchase :)

Now just waiting for SD card to come, and looking for case and uv lens filter for cam.

    • +1

      Congrats on your new purchases!
I recommend the faux leather Sony jacket case (LCJRXF) if you are going to be taking it on travels etc
As well as the Sony glass screen protector (PCK-LM15)

      • Any stores you'd recommend buying from?

        • I got mine with a bunch of other stuff I was purchasing from the states with a mail forwarder so it worked out well for me.

Locally it sells for $100, however with the 20% off and you can get it for $84 (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Sony-LCJ-RXF-Premium-Jacket-Case-…)

I was reluctant to spend that much on a case but after having it on a few trips, its paid itself off.
Previously I used to use pouches and maybe its just me but I found it much harder and cumbersome to constantly take it out of the pouch when on long treks etc and I ended up just not taking as many photos due to laziness.

I noticed I take a lot more photos now with the jacket, on top of that it offers decent protection and good grip as the bottom half of the case is always on the camera.

        • @h0mbre:

Thanks for the link, was wanting to get the Sony case but couldnt justify the 100+ AUD price.

Also was reluctant even with new price, but your recommendation is swaying me :)

  • First time poster, long time lurker.

Pulled the trigger and ordered one after seeing this as highly recommended by the OzB community as a travel camera. I've only ever used a phone camera so my question is does it come with a memory card or what kind should I be looking for?

This site: http://alikgriffin.com/best-sony-rx100-iv-memory-Cards/ seems to say use only Sony ones to get full 4K video recording and Kogan is selling it for $89. Thoughts?

    • +1

The requirement seems to be a UHS-I U3 (Ultra High-Speed Bus, Speed Class 3) card.

However doesnt seem to always be the case from table provided.

I myself got the a Sandisk Extreme 64GB http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/201779879942 using CYBER for 20% off

Haven't got it yet, so can't comment on performance, however it is on your table provided.

  • Ordered this Friday morning and still haven't received a shipping notice. Bit disappointing considering the postage experiences above.

    • +1

I'm with you, I think the late comers / fence sitters like us who bought near the end are on some kind of massive wait - i'm 5 working days down too without the item being shipped, eBays funky estimate system (which I know has no grip on reality) tells me the item should arrive tomorrow but the item hasn't shipped yet.

      • My shipping estimate vanished from the order details ("No estimate available") which I knew was a bad sign. I contacted the Sony eBay store and they said they would get in touch with "logistics" to determine the status of my order. Presumably they've had more cameras up for sale than they had in their warehouse, so are now awaiting a shipment of stock?

5 working days with no shipping notice for an item "in stock" is very poor form. Anyone else order last Friday or later and in the same boat?

        • +1

Anyone else still waiting for delivery 2 weeks later (or just me)

        • @jason101: Mine arrived about 8 business days after ordering.

  • Like previous posters, mine was in a sealed box and looks brand new.

  • Ordered on 16 March, Sony tells me they can't deliver to Aus Post lockers…and ask for other instructions. I reply straight away and I haven't heard from them since. I read the reviews about the poor service before buying, but has anyone else waited this long?

    • Ordered 16th March, only arrived today. They almost certainly ran out of stock and had to wait for a new shipment around the time we ordered.

I'd send a follow-up message asking the status of your order.

    • I had the same issue re: Aus Post locker, however when I replied with a revised address, they replied almost immediately to thank me. So I'd contact them again if I was you.
