  • Took eBay Dell long to reduce the price this time.

Excellent little laptop for watching videos, surfing web and light office work.

  • If i upgrade RAM to 8gb, Will i lose warranty?

    • +5

Generally no, just put back the 4gb stick back in before you call them lol.

      • Thx

      • +1

        Are sure it is upgradable?

        • +3

RAM and SSD are both upgradeable

        • +3

Yeh, some other ozbargainer did it last time this was on sale

        • +4

          Sure is, I did.

But still slow with many tabs open.

        • Yea for sure , i did that and all good

  • Do others find Internet Edge annoyingly slow on this device?

    • Yes, damn slow. Thinking of adding extra ram

      • +7

I upgraded to 8GB, didnt notice any difference TBH.

        But up to you.

      • +3

The ram is sufficient for keeping a few programs open (only just these days)

Its the processor that's slowing it down

    • How about Chrome?

      • Yet to try a different browser, aside from this, nice little laptop.

      • +4

Firefox was very slow, no matter what I did with it. Using Chrome now and it's fine.

More RAM would help but I can't be bothered, it's fast enough for me.

        • +2

Just tried this, and it makes the laptop much more usable. Cheers.

        • @brok9n: You've switched to Chrome?

        • +1

@brok9n: tried what? use chrome or add more ram?

        • +2

@JetLi: Using chrome, I still have 4GB ram.

        • @brok9n: cool, will give Chrome a go as well.

        • @JetLi: Be careful about your add-ons while you are at it. Add blockers in particular (I'm looking at you Add Block Plus) can chew up a lot of memory. Also if you are like me and like to leave heaps of tabs open I can highly recommed "The Great Suspender", unloads web pages you haven't looked at for a configurable amount of time.

    • -2

      Solution: Don't use Chrome :P

    • I haven't noticed any slowdowns with Edge, but then I haven't done any intense browsing. Any particular examples I should try out?

      • nothing special, just the regular webpages such as ozbargain, AFL, news websites and youtube. It just takes a few secs longer than I'm used to, which makes it a tad annoying.

  • -2

This netbook should support 5gb wifi, which is useful in NSW public schools.

    • +4

      5gb… that's really fast

      • AC5000….
Because NSW public schools are into Big Data.

      • +5

        sorry I mean 5g hz

        • What's the benefit of having 5ghz wifi on a public school network? Sure 5ghz can handle more bandwidth but 2.4ghz has superior range. The extra bandwidth capabilities in 5ghz would most likely be restricted by the internet speed on such a large network anyway.

        • +2

          @slosh:

5ghz wifi has less congestion and crosstalk

        • +1

          @slosh:
There are access points in every classroom in NSW public schools so range is not an issue.
Schools also run Intranets so the extra bandwidth is handy.

  • +2

Wish I could find a similarly specced laptop with a gigabit ethernet port but again a great deal nonetheless.

    • Yea. No idea why usb to Ethernet converters are $40-50.

      • +2

You can get USB3 gigabit ethernet adapters from aliexpress for about $15-20. Non branded are even less but this one should do the job nicely.

    • +2

Oh yes. If you find one let me know, also the screen resolution is a killer. Wired Ethernet all the way.

      • +1

        Killer in a good way?

        • +4

I doubt it. If it was a compliment about the screen it would be "The screen resolution is killer"

        • Haha thank
          I no speak well anglaís

        • +1

Sorry let me rephrase that: 1366 x 768 is crap.

        • Háha I new it!

      • 1366x768 should be banned on today's internet enabled devices. My phone is a 5" with 1920x1080. The screen resolution makes it hard to work with.

  • So $319 is the cheapest so far from previous deal.

    • Yeah. From previous deals, there have been quite a few recent $319.20 eBay deals and one $319 deal which is the cheapest. Other deals were more expensive or for the lesser model.

I work in IT in a school and these inspirons are a popular BYOD pick. I have seen the celeron versions, this one, and the core m3.

Celeron (with 32gb flash drive) - dont bother, slow useless POS
Pentium 4gb with 128gb SSD - not a bad school device, it goes alright, the SSD really helps it.
Core m3 (the 7th gen kaby lake version) absolutely flys. great laptop but i assume its probably double the price.

ohh and i MUST stress this. DO NOT press the power button in very hard. there is no anti force things behind the power button, seriously a small knock and you will push it in / break off the plastic behind the button which will need a send in warranty.

be very gentle, we have had to send 5 away in less than 2 months due to this.

    • +2

      Popular BYOD pick?
Are you saying that the kids' parents in the school you work at are mostly Ozbargainers?

    • +1

Out of curiosity. Your perspective was on speed. I'm hoping those benchmarks are real world school use. What do kids do these days on their laptops with regards to school curriculum that warrants anything beyond a celeron (disregarding boot times). Do they now cover video editing and photoshop-esque skills?

      • +1

        We have a managed laptop program (i3 or i5, 4gb or 8gb, 128gb SSD).

In secondary, all students have Adobe CC where they are expected to use Premiere, Photoshop and After Effects mostly. Nothing else is too strenuous.

      • Yeah secondary school students get the entire adobe suite in my previous workplace

They really spared no expense when it comes to software.

        • well back in the CS6 and below days we used to get a master licence which covered everything. now with this adobe CC crap not only have they made it difficult to deploy, but the licencing is now stupid too.

      • +1

My perspective was based on installing a few apps or general debugging of their machines. If any adobe software was going on there i would only recommend the m3 for those. the pentium may get away with some light photoshop.

    • thanks for sharing

    • Is there any way to make these come out of sleep mode automatically when you open the lid? I've not played with mine much but seemingly the only way is to (gently) press that switch.

I've got a few laptops and they all seem to vary in this aspect.

      Great machine overall though.

    • Thanks for that.
Mine are still primary, so all it needs to run now is Reading Eggs and Mathletics (as far as I am currently aware)
Always assumed I needed a gruntier machine for secondary. More from a whining perspective of the child than the apps they may need to run.

    • M3 $600 on Dell website and 2-in-1, is this a good deal?

    • Have you given one of these a go with Linux (Mint/Ubuntu)

Ive got an Toshiba Chromebook 2 with same processor , only 16gig SSD and 2gig of RAM
it lasts just a tad over 11 hours and it runs like a little beast using Linux with XFCE

Sure you cant load up 20+ tabs in chrome/firefox , but for AUD$300 this thing (Toshiba Chromebook 2 CB35)
is great, heck it IS faster then the POS imac's i5 quad core AIO Screen computers at SAE Brisbane campus

      • Where did you buy yours from? I can see it on Amazon but it's closer to $350 including shipping.

  • Is it true that build quality is poor on this machine?

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/296749#comment-4519222

    • +6

I'm no laptop nerd, but found the build quality pretty solid given the price point.

      • +1

How do we trust you if you are not a laptop nerd? ;)

        • +6

You can't, I probably just have low expectations.

  • +1

Worst CPU performance, always goes to 100%. Had bought 2 last year same price same websites, Had to return back to Dell. Try yourself, I rather spend $100 more to get at least decent CPU.

    • +1

I am considering this Dell laptop. What software you were using to send the CPU 100% usage?

      • +2

I am also wondering if this claim is a somewhat isolated occurrence.

      • I did prove to Dell Online support by remote login that even turning Internet Explorer will make CPU as high as 95 to 100%, they did not found any solution for it and accepted that this machine can't do much more then. So without running any other non certified application even can make almost no use. Anyway thats my experience, you can try by all means. The deal is good and cheap so easy to get attracted.

    • +1

What software were you running? You're getting good performance at this price (much better than any of the Atoms/the N3050/3060 based laptops around this price, but nothing spectacular).

I have an i3 SP3 which has similar performance to the Pentium in this, and the CPU does often hit 100%, but that doesn't make it unusable…

Don't think you'd find anything more powerful at ~$400.

    • +2

I have a Core 2 Duo t6600 Acer that's still used as internet kiosk and the CPU holds up
      It's also a decade old.

Are you sure your machine is not infected with malware

    • May need to reomove all crapware to reduce CPU load.

  • +3

I want the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon for $650ish :D

  • +4

Got this last year when it was $399. :(

Wife uses it for web browsing/email/Facebook/Skype and it does the job nicely. Decent value for a couch laptop.

  • +2

I bought one in the last sale and it would be perfect if not for the display. While usable, it's not high quality and the viewing angles are terrible.

Performance wise it's fine for browsing and watching videos. Stick a cheap microSD card in there for extra storage.

    • +2

Is it the lack of sharpness or colours?

      • +1

It looks washed out, mostly due to the contrast. Sharpness is fine.

        • To help the washed out look, use the Intel graphics drivers to reduce the blue gamma - on ours the washed out look was a slight blue tinge, so by dialing back the blue a fraction the laptop screen looked a more crisp white. It still has horrid viewing angles, but at least it was better to use.

(or just tweak the colours to get whatever is easier on your eyes)

  • +2

Thanks OP, got one for the wife

  • Awesome, thanks op.

Got meself the red. Hopefully I won't regret when the scratches kick in from lugging it around as a cheapo… but, red. Shiny.

Also does anyone know if this comes with a free 1 year sub to office 365? Cheers

    • +1

      only a 30 day trial

      • Darn. Thanks though :)

    • +1

      Good choice. Red goes faster.

      • will come in handy when you try to surf the net on Edge.

  • Gf got this for uni, loves it so far. This is all the laptop you need for uni.

    • +1

Fair warning for engineering students, this won't run MATLAB and CAD very well. But they do work.

  • Is it possible to replace the 128 GB SSD with 1 TB 2.5" HDD?

    • +2

You want to use a mechanical HDD? Sure can, but why do that to yourself.. Ssd is da future

      • +4

This future is too small and the big future is too expensive.

        • Wouldn't you rather a Ferrari over a torago?

        • +1

@xEnt: depends how many people he/she wants to download from torrent sites

        • +1

@Matt P: yeah you can fit a lot of linux iso's in a torago i guess

  • +1

Thanks to OP for the notice, bought one.

  • Does this comes with full Microsoft office -word, excel, publisher etc?
Also, has it got a VGA port or just HDMI?
    Thanks

    • No office - only comes with a trial. HDMI only for video out unfortunately.

  • Thanks op I was waiting for this to come back as missed the last one just recently.

Almost heading to good guys to get a clearance asus with a tiny atom 2 gigs and 32 emmc for 279 & that was a darling price as it still goes for 300 everywhere in backwards Australia. No one else in the world would use an atom with 2 gigs and 32 gigs after Win 10 you get only 5 gigs if lucky, let alone at 300 dollars.

Thank gawd this special came back thanks again op grabbed a blue. Is this Australia post do they give tracking number?

    • -1

      Breath

    • +1

Fairly sure they are shipped from Malaysia. You'll only get a tracking number via SMS once they get to Sydney. Mine was delivered the day after I got the message (Adelaide).

      • how long it take to arrive to you from order date bud?

        • +1

Mine took 10 days from the last deal, about a week earlier than the expected date.

        • @hamza23: thanks heaps
