50% off NSW Driver's Licence Renewal for Safe Drivers

1312

If you have a good driving record, you may be eligible for a 50% discount on your licence renewal fee. You must renew your licence within six months of the expiry date. If you renew more than six months after expiry, you must pay the full renewal fee. If you’re eligible, the discount applies whether you renew your unrestricted licence for one, three, five (or 10 years for eligible customers aged 21 to 44 years).

To qualify, at the time of renewal you must:

-Hold an unrestricted NSW licence of any class which expires on or after 1 July 2012. Interstate and overseas licences are not counted. Learner and provisional P1 and P2 licences are also not counted
-Have held the NSW licence continuously for five years. This means you must have less than six months total break (eg if your licence was expired, suspended, cancelled or refused for any reason, except on medical grounds)
-Have no relevant offences recorded on your NSW licence in the five years leading up to the date you renew your licence. Interstate and overseas driving records are not counted. Relevant offences include:
—Any offence which attracts demerit points
—A conviction for a major offence, such as drink or drug driving
—Any unlicensed driving offence.

Some offences are recorded on your traffic record, but won't be counted when determining eligibility for the discount. These include offences dealt with by way of a caution issued by the State Debt Recovery Office, or any offence which was dismissed without conviction under Section 10 of the Crimes (Sentencing Procedure) Act 1999.

Important: Offences dealt with under Section 10 before 31 January 2011 are counted as relevant offences, because they attracted demerit points at the time.

If you’re appealing an offence when you renew your licence, the discount does not apply. However if your appeal is successful, you may be eligible for a refund of 50% of the renewal fee you paid.

This is not a deal. This has been going on for years and is an incentive from RMS to drive safe

      • +4

        Think different!
There are many examples where it's acceptable to use adverbs in adjective form, especially on a user forum.

The below, based on an article in The Economist, sums it up quite well:
That article notes that there may be a subtle difference in meaning between "safe" and "safely," and I tend to agree. "Drive safely" more specifically refers to driving in a safe manner. "Drive safe" emphasizes the end result, being unharmed when you stop driving.
        Source: http://english.stackexchange.com/questions/8328/which-is-cor…

        • +3

So in this case the correct word would still be 'safely'.

        • @ytumer: The differences are subtle but I wouldn't say one is correct and the other one isn't. Mind you, we're on a bargain forum here so both are totally acceptable as even those who studied English won't agree. To me, using the adverb as an adjective takes the emphasis away from the verb. 'Drive safe' is about being 'safe' or even promoting safety, 'drive safely' is about not putting others and yourself at risk whilst driving.

        • @bozbargain:

But the incentive plan from the RMS is to make sure you drive safely and focus on "not putting others and yourself at risk whilst driving" by your own definition. In my eyes to drive safe would mean to not care about the road rules as long as you considered your own safety while driving as stated by the quote you linked - "'Drive safe' emphasizes the end result, being unharmed when you stop driving". So I think one is more correct than the other.

        • +1

@ytumer: I don't disagree with that and I can definitely see the one being preferred over the other, I just wanted to stress that 'drive safe' is not grammatically incorrect per se.

      • English, Chinese, & Vietnamese are categorized as `analytic languages due to their paucity of inflection. EN-“descriptive language”, devoid of any standardizing or categorizing grammar & vocabulary authority, so it tends to agglomerate words from multiple sources with no top-down mechanism to purge or simplify!

We talk about ‘Englishes,’” says Jan Smith, a Sydney-based educational consultant. “Indian English, Chinglish & Singlish [Singapore] are all legitimate forms of the language. Most exchanges in English now take place between people for whom English is not their 1st language. She adds:“ third-person singular is disappearing between non-native speakers.” That’s what she think. & that’s what she say.

"Hollywood is certainly a driver of world-wide culture & language. I lived in Australia some time ago & when I visited a 'petrol bowser' I accidentally broke the little glass globe on the side of a gas pump. I apologized to the attendant & offered to pay & he said, 'Its arright, Mayte. They're a dime a dozen.' Several miles later I realized that they don't have 'dimes' in Australia. I actually went back & asked him where he got the word & he said, 'donno, Mayte. Mebee I heard it in the movies.'"

When I renewed 5 years ago there was no such discount? It was never advertised

      • +3

You basically need a gold license and when renewing you must maintain that gold license status. Put simply, your driving record needs to be perfect to get this discount, the system applies it automatically.

        • I had gold license three times. Each time is full cost, there was never discount despite I have zero Dermit points for last 17 years nor any traffic offenses.

          Last one was $157

        • Was it $157 for the 10-year license? Because that may have been 50% off - I paid $165 last month for the 10-year license at half price.

      • +3

When I renewed 5 years ago there was no such discount? It was never advertised

        ^ Unsafe driver.

        • Lol funny comment. I have had no dermit points deducted or have any traffic offense for 17 years. Did not see the discount anywhere.

        • +1

          @neonlight:

Contact the RMS and ask about it. :)

        • Wrong.
This scheme has been adopted 1 July 2012. If you renewed before you paid full price no matter what.

        • I think you are correct….in that case I renewed in 2011 did not get the scheme benefits. DOH

        • When I renewed 5 years ago there was no such discount? It was never advertised

Turn your card over and look at the top right corner. It will tell you how much you paid.

      • I got the discount when renewing about 18 months back, but won't be getting it next time…

      • +2

This scheme began in July 2012 and should be automatic the next time you renew your licence. Your last renewal probably missed the start date by a few months.

      • +1

Despite what people are saying here this discount DID not apply 5 years ago.
        Started 1st July 2012

      This is not a deal.

I think it's more of a public service announcement.

    • If this were available in my state I'd certainly consider it a bargain.

  • +25

This is NOT a new discount.
You DO NOT have to apply to receive it.
It is processed AUTOMATICALLY at a Services NSW office or online when you seek to renew your licence.

It is a lovely 'thank you' from the state to the considerate drivers of NSW who 'keep their noses clean'.

    • -2

But you do need to do something to receive the "discount" ;) as an added discount, you also save on fines! Want more? Your family saves on the lower risk of a cost of a funeral!

    • It is a lovely 'thank you' from the state to the considerate drivers of NSW who 'keep their noses clean'.

And the ones who cause traffic congestion by driving 10–30 km/h under the limit.

      • I think driving 30km/h under the limit might actually be liable for a citation - in which case, it wouldn't qualiy for the 50%

    • I see lots of drivers keeping their noses clean.

  • Mods,

It's more likely a reminder for NSW drivers. I think 6 months post rule has not been breached but please delete it if it's not applicable.

    • +9

Reminder? The govt gives this to you automatically, you dont request it.

The only remainder here is to renew your license within 6 months of it being due. There are also fines to remind you of that. Likewise the only other reminder is not to get caught breaking the law. There are gfines also to remind you not to do that.

Belongs in forums as a info piece

Im not eligible due to speeding on cleveland street past the golf course at 6.30pm at night. Well they consider 62km hr speeding and worthy of a fine that cost me a fine and my perfect clean driving record along with chance to get the renewal discount on my licence this year. Yep Im pissed about it.

    • +13

Yes, safe drivers must stare at their speedometer, and not the road ahead.

      • HUD?

        • Only if its a 50% off optional extra.

    • +9

You may of been fined for 62km but your speedo would of been reading 65km+ at the time.
Don't get me wrong, I'd be annoyed myself but you can't be booked for speeding unless you are driving above the "maximum" speed.

    • Was that the fixed camera at Moore Park?

    • +9

Yeah, you would be fined doing 62km/h. Unless I am mistaken about what you had said, Cleveland Street has been 50km/h for a number of years now. There are a number of 50km/h speed limit signs and the speed limit painted on the road of Cleveland Street between South Dowling Street and Anzac Parade.

    • +1

I think the speed limit on that stretch of the road is 50km/h, and is 40 during school zone hours.

In your opinion, how much over the speed limit would justify a fine?

    • Yes, only speeding find that I've ever received, I even did 63!
      At 5am though.

    • +1
      • Yeah Im not from the area so more concerned about being in the correct lane and getting back to where Im going I suppose I missed a few signs. But for god sake 50km hr speed limit past a golf course at night is a joke.

    • That stretch of the road is congested at 6:30pm congratulations for being able to go that fast then 😀

So true, driving in NSW is a game of luck

      • +3

With all the traffic on some roads you should be given a cash prize for achieving the speed limit.

  • +5

Lol @ people complaining about this yet upvoting an average saving of a couple $ through CR increasing cash back. Good old ozb

  • This is not a deal. It is reward for being a responsible driver. Targeted(may be) and you probably have no option to choose not to accept it I assume.

  • Only NSW? Will be good to have discount on renewals for safe drivers in WA especially vehicle license renewal is now $700 a year!

    • +3

$700/ year? I highly doubt that.

      • $700/ year?

I think that only applies to Ben Cousins… It includes legal fees.

      • Light vehicle license $366 + motor injury insurance $409 = almost $800
        http://www.transport.wa.gov.au/mediaFiles/licensing/FINAL_LB…

        • +1

Thats cute. In NSW, Compulsory Third Party (CTP/Green Slip) alone is $900 for people under 30s.

        • +1

@AquaCerulean: so the cost to keep a car licensed without driving it in NSW is more than $1000 a year?

    • +4

      http://www.transport.wa.gov.au/licensing/driver-licence-fees…

5 years for $132. That's less than my NSW one AFTER the discount.

    • Meh, that's nothing to whinge about. Vic is nearly $800 now, and I'm sure the folks in NSW is paying much more than that, especially if they're under 30. This is more relevant to the licence fee, NSW licence fee per year is also way more expensive than other states.

  • Renewed my license yesterday.. 163 bucks for 10 years!!!

      • +2

Where do you buy the bucks for $1 each?

  • Woooot? Paid over $400 to renew for 10 years in SA:

    https://www.sa.gov.au/topics/driving-and-transport/drivers-a…

    • Same. I still don't know why I did it

  • Do they accept bulk renewals for a further discount?

    • How many licences do you have?

      • +2

I'll count you in jv. Once you pass your Older drivers test.

  • +2

just paid $400 for SA renewal
    SA sucks

  • +1

This is a long running deal.

  • Thanks for this. Always knew I was eligible for 50% off but didn't know I could renew it 6 months in advance. Licence only expires in June, but renewed for 5 years today. $89, woot.

    • Does your new licence expire in March or June if you renewed today? Mine expires in July so not sure whether to renew it now in case it ends up expiring in March rather than July …

      • +1

I'm not aware of that just yet. I did an online renewal so the licence will be posted to me within 10 days. I'm hoping the expiry date is June 2022 not March 2022.

        • Please let us know when your new licence expires when you receive it! :) If it's June, then might as well renew mine early too so I can get my 50% 10-year licence xD

      • +2

I did mine early, it was due to expire November 2016 and I renewed it online in July 2016 and the new one has Nov 2026 expiry.

        • Thanks heaps! But I thought you couldn't renew 10 years online? (Mine said I had to go to the RMS)

  • -1

Is the six months rule enforced strictly?

  • +2

This has been out for almost 5 years now. I remember because I had just paid full price on a 5 year license and then they came out with this scheme a few weeks later. I was really annoyed at the time because it would have been much cheaper for me to get a 1 year license and then get the 50% off the next year.

  • They should actually call this a 100 percent bad driving record levy… Would that be a bargain then?

  • Along the same lines:

Some insurers now offer a big discount on your CTP if you have zero demerit points on your licence.

So, new drivers in NSW, remember that your first traffic offence doesn't just cost you that $350 fine. It also costs you hundreds of dollars come licence renewal time, AND hundreds more for your CTP each year when renewing your rego.

When thinking "I can go 5ks over, every one else is", just remember that when you get caught, this will cost you closer to a grand.

    Can you afford that?

    • +1

Plan to cut down from 2 cars to 1 once UberPool comes to the market. It's just not worth keeping a car considering the amount of options that'll be available soon… UP, GoGet, CarNextDoor etc etc.

  • so we reward drivers for driving as they should as a minimum (and those that don't get caught)

Perhaps we could instead adequately punish bad drivers, that would result in a significant decrease in the annual death toll

  • -2

"Safe" drivers, what a (profanity) joke that is.

Most people around sydney drive like (profanity), just because the lazy ass pigs don't do their job doesn't mean these people drive safely.

  • This is not a deal, it's a way for them to increase licensing fees, to increase revenue. Then they blame the public to as why the fee's are so high.

"well your fee's wouldn't be as high if you didn't forget to signal when changing lanes 4 and a half years ago."

    Side Note:
I have taken advantage of this offer a while ago, and got the 10 year license. I was 23 at the time.

  • again this is not a deal/bargain. Just the official rules.

  • -7

Heh I don't even pay for my license renewals, work do and I keep a copy of the receipt and claim it on tax as well.

    It's all gravy
