    How much is this normally?

    • Well my mum.. Car rego is about ~$600 a year, and 10 year license is $330.

      So yeah!

      • +16

        Car rego is about ~$600 a year

        Not for pensioners.

      • +4

        age limit for 10 year license is 44, after that you can only get a fiver
        unless you're mum is one of those really young pensioners in which case you should be in school with the other kiddies :-P

      • +1

        Turd… that $600 rego fee you mention would include the CTP insurance.. which is NOT free for people on a pension… aged, disability pension or others…
        Also the 10 year licence option is only available to people aged from 21 - 44 so it would exclude aged pensioners.
        5yr licence is $178 normally.

        • +1

          CTP is separate. Car rego is car rego, unlike some other states.

        • +1

          @Turd:
          cars, station wagons and trucks
          Tare Weight (kg)
          Up to 975 $207
          976 to 1154 $240
          1155 to 1504 $293
          1505 to 2504 $448
          2505 to 2794 $650
          They must have a big vehicle?

        • +1

          @xywolap: Oh right.. It was just a guestimate.. I think it's $293.

          So man it's a great saving am, I wrong?

        • +1

          @Turd:
          Correct… your guestimate looked like you included the CTP. $293 would be roughly right for a regular sedan.
          CTP's are more about $450+ anyway, so that makes $750 plus your inspection fee $40? plus some TPP insurance… easily over $1000 before you take the car onto the road every year… Ouch!

        • +1

          @xywolap: yep ! but minus 10-15% due to pay rego and fees via cc using egiftcards with cash rewards and eftpos cards ;)

        • +1

          @Turd:
          How do you use egift cards to pay ?
          I thought that they were only for woolies, Coles etc…

    • Car registration depends on the motor vehicle.

      • Yep! But if pension it is free! So before people ask.. Buy an expensive car get parents (if pensioners) to own it. Then you get free rego!!!

        • +3

          Buy an expensive car get parents (if pensioners) to own it.

          Then they pay full rego on their car…

        • +1

          @jv: if it is their only car they dont

        • +2

          @jv: kids wont care about that..

        • +1

          @xywolap: Professional ozbargainers! Tryin' to say a buck to survive in Sydney

        • +3

          However you may find that you've breached your insurance conditions (e.g. locatoin of the car) which will make the policy "null and void".

        • @mathew42: How do they find out if your borrowed mums car and sleeping at your house or not? Just wondering.

        • +2

          @Turd: Toll payments, GPS records, phone data, etc. All easy to check if the insurance company is suspicious.

        • @mathew42: Privacy act prevents this unless ordered by court.

        • +2

          @jv: If both parents are pensioners, they can have two cars with free rego. One for them and one for you.

        • @Nedman:

          If both parents are pensioners,

          Can you get your parents to divorce and remarry, that way you four free regos for the wife and kids ????

        • @jv:
          The discount applies to both husband and wife if they are both on a pension. They get a free rego and licence each.
          No need to split up the family yet JV … :-)

        • @xywolap:

          They get a free rego and licence each.

          If they divorce and remarry though to other pensioners, won't you get four free regos?

        • +3

          If you have a serious accident where there is a lot of money involved that is where using your parents rego/insurance whatever scheme comes unstuck.
          Job one with any insurer is to find a way to reject the claim and they do have ways of finding out.
          Your free or cheap rego/insurance could leave you paying for the rest of your life…
          It has happened… is it worth it?

        • @jv: … Yes… didnt think of that.. LOLLL.
          You do take things to the limit… he he he

        • +1

          @xywolap:
          I drive my Father's car with his Pension discount in Queensland. He no longer drives due to health issues & I am his carer living at same address.

          I have comprehensive insurance in my name, but third party with rego is in his name, but covers all drivers of car. I have been given advice that the insurance will cover me.

        • +4

          @jv:
          Even for dedicated OzBargainers, asking your parents to divorce & remarry other pensioners is a bit much work to get a deal😯

        • @Infidel:
          Not for us hard core bargain hunters… :-)

        • +3

          @Turd:

          Privacy act prevents this unless ordered by court.

          In the event of a claim you have to co-operate with the private investigator assigned to investigate and if you don't allow them access to the information requested your claim can be denied. The investigator will look at things like who drives the car normally, talk to neighbours and friends, take statements from anyone who might have information regarding the claim, check out servicing records and who paid for servicing and the list goes on. If you register a car in your parents name to save money this is fraud which is a criminal offence and on top of the prospects of having a criminal record you will face huge hurdles in trying to obtain insurance for the rest of your life.

        • @jv:

          Can you get your parents to divorce and remarry, that way you four free regos for the wife and kids ????

          Easier to just cut off your leg jv.

        • @Maverick-au:

          In the event of a claim you have to…

          And people still purchase insurance. :[

        • +1

          @Scrooge McDuck:
          yes.. better to have none :-( ????

        • @Maverick-au: Oh ok. I downloaded game of throans.. is that bads?

        • @mathew42:
          Privacy breach on all three.

        • @rifter: The privacy breach will depend on what you agreed to when accepting the insurance policy.

          In answer to the question How much information can my insurance company request from me?

          As much information as they need to make a decision on whether to approve or reject your claim. However, a request for information has to be relevant to the claim.

          It is a good idea that if you provide the requested information you should also keep a copy for your own records and keep a record of every time you are being requested for more information, why it is being requested and when it was requested and provided.

          Secondly insurance policies typically include the industry standard clause 'Breach of Duty of Utmost Good Faith'. I doubt some of the suggestions made here would pass that test.

    Does anyone know if pensioners will be getting a discount on the green slip? By the new law from few weeks ago that was announced regarding green slip price cut.

    Thanks you :)

    • Do not think so.

    • Interesting Drazenm.. I did hear that they were looking at overhauling the CTP setup, mostly because of the rorts and rip offs that are making premiums higher all the time.

  • +5

    It's funny how grumpy old pensioners are often the ones complaining about cyclists not being entitled to the road because they don't pay for rego, even when they don't pay for rego themselves!

    • +2

      Maybe they dont know they can get free rego/licenses?

    • 1… All old pensioners are not grumpy!! I'm one and I will have you know that &&***^^%%$%&&&^^… grrrr…. (LOL)
      2… Personally, I have paid full rego, licence and insurances EVERY year on my cars for well over 40 years prior to receiving the benefit….
      …. bike riders have not contributed one lousy cent, ever.

      • +4

        bike riders have not contributed one lousy cent, ever.

        You may not be serious, however:

        1. Many bike riders are also licensed car owners, meaning they've paid licensing and registration fees.
        2. Registration is charged on a weight basis due to wear and tear on roads among other factors. The combined weight of a bicycle and operator is trivial compared to that of a car.
        3. Bicycle riders travel slower, less far and on fewer roads than motor vehicle drivers, causing still less wear and tear on roads.
        4. Governments may want to incentivise bicycle use…
        • -3

          The licence and rego fee they pay is for their car … not their bicycle, skateboard, etc. You are free to go and mingle with the cars, trucks and busses on our overcrowded roads… but stop blaming others for your bad choices..

        • +3

          @xywolap:

          The licence and rego fee they pay is for their car … not their bicycle, skateboard, etc.

          But you said they "have not contributed one lousy cent, ever", which is not correct. Further, when they're riding their bicycle, they're not driving their car, paying for both would be redundant.

          but stop blaming others for your bad choices..

          lol wut?

          I didn't do that. 🙄

        • -2

          Registration could be argued is charged for the lane use, if I have to give a cyclist 1.5m, they often take up a lane. They have no plate to report for wrong doing…

          Redundant? Im not using my car when I sleep, or use a car park and walk. I have to pay for my motorcycle, and both cars… but Im only using one at a time.

    • -1

      I'm not a pensioner but no offence, no cyclists shouldn't be on the road, I say this safety wise. If you listen to the news, every single day at least one motor cyclists is hit and hurt pretty badly and they have space for the whole lane width to ride on and they are almost literally invisible in most cases for a car driver on the sides and back how fast and frantic city traffic is. So what am I to say than for a cyclist whose supposed to have 1m free space on the side when the lane width is at most places barely 2-2.5m??? Where does a car go then? In the other lane or drag at 15-20km forever behind the cyclist?

      If you value life go and cycle in the park.

      • -3

        I am also a keen cyclist and even a once in a while mc rider and anyone who demands that motorists who have to deal with very overcrowded roads these days also make allowances for people on 2 wheels with a death wish has got their head in a very dark and smelly place.
        I would not risk cycling on a public road these days and it is not the motorists fault.

      • +3

        So what am I to say than for a cyclist whose supposed to have 1m free space on the side when the lane width is at most places barely 2-2.5m??? Where does a car go then? In the other lane or drag at 15-20km forever behind the cyclist?

        Most cyclists riding on major roads during peak hour are travelling at 40km/h. Is saving 1-2 minutes really that important that you are going to risk killing a cyclist. Secondly those cyclists are not driving cars which are reducing traffic on the roads.

      • +3

        The statistics are not there to backup your opinion. There are more deaths on motorcyles than bicycles. Also you are significantly reducing your risk of various "lifestyle" related diseases by riding a bike/walking/running. Also keep in mind that these health issues are funded by the tax payer aka Ozbargainers, therefore if cyclists pay rego/insurance (which as mentioned most do) smokers/drinkers/obese folks should also be slugged extra for being a burden on the health system.

        So what to do ? You wait 5 seconds pass when you can. Most cyclists as are most car drivers are nice considerate folk who will likely get out of your way when they can.

        Be glad the cyclist is not driving a large vehicle in the frantic city traffic therefore making it slightly less frantic.

        You can google the average speed on most major suburban roads, I think you will also see they are way below average cycling speeds, i.e above 20….

        Ps. I am not a pensioner. We should also have reduced rego for cyclists. Or reduced rego for multiple vehicle owners. I can only drive one at a time ! here's another idea…. CTP is tied to the person and not the vehicle.

        • Or reduced rego for multiple vehicle owners. I can only drive one at a time!

          Or what about pay as you drive rego? I'd love to only have to pay $2 per day for the days I use a car, not for the days it's parked at home.

    OzBargain not OzPublicKnowledge

    • +2

      Not really… Just like recharging opal at woolies no one knows. Same with using cashrewards for life hacks of 5% off. >.<

      • I literally see you everywhere around here. Are you some kind of magical turd that cannot resist bargains?

          "Howdy Ho folks!" Its Mr Hankey the Christmas OzBargain Turd💩

        • +3

          Professional :)

      • Still, not OzBargain. Maybe we should open OzLifehacks for all these "deals" that keep getting posted.

        • That's the reason the Report button is for - this belongs in Forums. Negs aren't for that purpose.

  • +2

    Similarly, free NSW National Parks Pass

    With an NPWS exemption card, pensioner Concession Card holders and EDA, Intermediate and Special Rate (blinded, TPI and TTI) pensioners are entitled to free motor vehicle entry into all fee-collecting national parks and reserves.

    Pensioners get a renewal of card annually, so discount information should be advised there.

  • Isn't this the case always though?

    • More a forum topic or Wiki of discounts for pensioners😯

    • +2

      The same can be said about a percentage of "deals" published here.
      As an example this "deal" https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/285995.
      An every day government service.
      Strangely enough the percentage of respondents were rock hard over it???

      Waiting for a target "deal" about the Tax Free Threshold… 😉

      • +1

        That's easy, tax free threashold.. Buy a cheap property and or negative gear it and or have a ABN and offset your taxes with income and pay taxes and income with VISA gift cards 10%-20% off using amex.

        Should make a post about this?
