    Hey OzB brains trust,
New to business - what are your thoughts on Xero, Quickbooks & MYOB?

    • +1

      +1 for Xero
For the record I'm NOT an accountant and have no financial background
I helped our company switch from MYOB (a software version, not a full web-based one like xero) and have since taken on overseeing the finance department
We've lightened our staffing load significantly in this area
We store all our documents in it now and have done away with paper storage
Bank reconciliation is a breeze and can be done from your phone in bed before you even get to work
Payroll is all integrated and pretty simple to manage

I really can't recommend it more highly.

Lots of discussion in the last post: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/297214

      Depends on your business.

I found Xero completely useless in it's current form, and by the time you include all the Add Ons required to get the functionality required it's more expensive than MYOB which had all the functionality built in.

The downside of MYOB is that it looks like it's from the 70s, whereas Xero (and to a lesser extent Quickbooks) looks more modern. I'd recommend spending a few hours on each entering the types of invoices you think you'll be doing to get a feel for it's usability over looks. AFAIK they all offer free trials.

"Depends on your business" is probably more accurate.

MYOB doesn't offer any of this which is standard in Xero: hosting, backups, software updates, support, importing bank feeds nightly.

The extras are things like Payroll or SuperStream.

I've done quite a lot of research and am heading the way of Xero myself. 90% chance I'll take up this offer.
Liking the integration and hook up to accountant. Need to be babied for the first year or two then may negate
integration of accountant access until end of F. Years. If use of accountant appears useful/valuable on a more
consistent basis, will maintain the more/less instantly accessible option via integration.

Same level of intended commitment with Square for mobile POS. Too many reports from people using PayPay POS
and having PP siding with customer payment challenges as much as instantly, though there are ways around this apparently.

Having said that, the others have really 'upped their game' in this particular/specific (mobile POS) realm which has
not made this an easy choice at all. I fully expect challenges and objections may well follow.

  • Note this is for new users only

  • on a similar topic, Xero gives you unlimited 3 months free trials.
once your trial is up, simply delete the organisation and create a new to get the free three months trial again.

I would imagine this deal is similar, organisation based rather then linked to your email.

also, with the plans, you can upgrade or downgrade at any time with no penalties, so you can upgrade to the standard plan if you have more transactions in one month, and then downgrade back down to starter next month.

3 months? Its now just 30 days.

  • Say for a very simple business - 1-5 employees; hand-written receipts; expenses coming out of business bank account

I was just about to post this deal haha.

I signed up to a subscription today. I've been using it for the last few weeks.

I have been using WaveApps (http://waveapps.com) for my small business over the last 8 months - I'd recommend that for any small business just starting out. It connects to CommBank to reconcile spending and sends invoices.

Im switching to Xero, because WaveApps is American based and now my business is growing I want something that supports the Australian tax system a little more - there's a also few things it doesn't support- like payroll.

  • A question for people using this.
I will be moving over to Xero next month. Currently on MYOB.
I have heard if you want to convert/transfer over your data using a 3rd party service (eg. Jetconvert, which is free), you do not get first month free or may not be eligible for this 1/2 price deal.
ie. You would have to convert the data yourself or another way.
I am not sure if this is true.
