This or the newest gen ipad

    32GB for $469
    128G for $599

    • Interesting pricings here…

I wonder why the lower RRP for the new Ipad.

      • +11

It's using the iPad Air 1 shell, so thicker and heavier plus it doesn't have the fully laminated display to reduce the price.
The upside is the A9 processor.

        • +2

The new one is still better. The A9 will give a couple extra years of life to it. So it's slightly thicker and heavier. Not going to be a dealbreaker, since the Air 1 wasn't.

        • +2

          @lostn:

The display could be though. If you compare them side by side, this new iPad display is a downgrade compared to Air 2 as mentioned by unco.
Air 2 is no slouch in performance. So for people needing only media consumption device, Air 2 is a better choice.

        • +2

@jtrvk: Is the resolution the same?

Air 2 is no slouch right now. But in 2 years when we get iOS 12 or 13, I get a feeling the A9 will have less lags than it. That's the nature of iOS updates on older hardware. New apps will have higher system requirements also, leaving out older models.

I'd rather get 2 more years of expected product life out of it than laminate on the screen.

Though for me, I got the iPad Pro 9.7 128GB for $597 last year thanks to AMEX, so I got the best deal possible.

        • +5

A9 is a generation ahead to be sure, but lower clock speed and fewer cores versus the iPad Air 2.

        • +2

@lostn: I agree with you regarding future proofing part. If you want an overall performing tablet then new iPad makes more sense. But if you are planning to use it mainly as a media consumption device then the screen argument is valid. And of course for basic applications I think Air 2 will perform reasonably even on iOS 12 or 13. I personally felt the difference in display seeing them side by side. If you are fine with new iPad display then purchase of a new iPad is a no-brainer.

        • @jtrvk: I think the Air 2 would be make a more compelling case if it was cheaper than the new model.

Everyone who's described the new display has been reluctant to be specific about it. "It looks worse" tells me nothing. What didn't you like? Was the color gamut narrower? Is the resolution lower? Is the screen darker and contrast poorer?

If you're buying a $600 device not for apps but as a media consumption device, you can get cheaper non-Apple devices that are better. No need for iTunes or converting your MKVs into some format that will lose you your subtitle tracks and dual audio. I don't see any benefit to a walled garden's restrictions if you're mainly using it to watch video. I got my iPad for the latest games like IB that aren't available on Android. For media, I love Android's ability to drag and drop my media files like you would a USB mass storage device. At least without jailbreaking or needing some app that gets around Apple's lockdown.

@lostn: But the A9 isn't really 2 years ahead of the A8X, it was released only 1 year later. And Apple have long since stopped making the sliding window of obsolescence being that predictable. If you're playing intensive games and using other really intensive apps, it's worth it. But if you're just watching Netflix, don't bother.

I found it comparatively more reflective

I agree with you on that one. But what if you are already invested in the apple ecosystem?

        • @lostn: wow interested in what AMEX deal that allowed that price.

        • @lostn: Its the glare due to the internal reflections caused by the air gap.

      • +5

Apple are trying to create a larger gap ($$ and features) between their iPad and iPad Pro lines.

You'll notice the new iPad is also a touch heavier too.

      • +1

Because Apple are selling less tablets along with every other tablet maker because users see no reason to upgrade or buy.

    • If you need the space go for 128.

If you need to save go for 32.

  • +1

you are better off getting the new ipad that was released a few days ago. Better specs at the same price

    • +1

iPad 5 is more or less a downgrade from iPad Air 2.

      • +3

        the processor is faster

        • +1

exactly. processor is really an important factor if you plan to use the same ipad for 5-6 years

        • @ApplePineapplePen: both iPads will be slugs in 2022

  • +3

The new iPad uses faster A9 SoC, but it also heavier and uses an inferior screen compared with the Air 2.

If anyone wants to see a comparison of the newer iPad (2017) screen compared to the iPad Air 2, here's a link
    https://youtu.be/qLEWnlJed7k?t=3m21s

Honestly the newer iPad is just a cheap option for people who just want an iPad for a few years and have never owned one or just upgrading from older models like iPad 2,3,4 or minis and do simple things on it.
Runs fast, good enough screen and its not that much heavier. It has a larger battery and more efficient SoC compared to the Air 2's A8X chip which may equate to better battery life.

I think the screens are "relatively" the same and really the only noticeable difference is the air gap (lamination) and has slightly more glare (since there's no anti reflective coating)

You make it sound like the air 2 would have a longer use life, but it likely has a lot less.

  • I think in anticipation of Samsung Tab S3 they start pushing these out?
I was about to buy Ipad pro when we had the offer last time then I found out about S3 and decided to wait for that instead.

    • The TAB S3 was dead on arrival… sad!

    Guys, not worth it.
New iPad is out soon, for the same price (almost!)!

    • +7

Lol I guess you skipped over the 20 comments comparing and pointing out the pros and cons of the new vs air2 h hehehe

  • This new 'iPad' reminds me of 'The new iPad' launched in March 2012 which was slightly heavier than the preceding iPad 2, and was superceded by the iPad 4 in a just a handful of months in October 2012.

  • Prices for 128GB are $599. Not sure where $239 came from.

    Damn April fools day!

    • It's not $239, it's ENE239.
