Hemnes is one of the better quality ranges at IKEA, more pine than MDF so can't complain

      it's IKEA, mate.

East coast is owned by a diff group to SA/WA. Deals are not the same.

  • +1

Not a bad price. We have this (dark colour) in my sons bedroom. It looks great, but the base of the drawers is a bit flimsy though and can pop under weight, not what you'd expect for $499.

    • +1

I had the same concern but they now come with supports for under the 4 large drawers.

      • confirmed. they come with metal arm supports and these do not pop or sag. have had my new one for a few months now and they are heavily loaded.

  • I just saw this table yesterday at Ikea Adelaide for $449, and a glass piece to 159cm x 50cm $25. They have a warped one in the defect/scraps area for $299.

  • +2

I have one of these already. Fantastic unit. Drawers are soft rolling and very deep. Solid build as well.

    Bargain.

    • +2

I've got one too, love the design but definitely wouldn't call it a solid build.

As Robbie613 said, the base of the drawers are flimsy and thin.

      • Maybe they feel solid to me because I have so much stuff in each drawer. :)

      • They have a metal bracket underneath each drawers, for 300 bucks it is a very good looking drawer.

  • +7

It comes in two packages, one weighs 37Kg and the other weighs 34Kg
Unless you're one of those "super" strong man/woman, please make sure that you brings your friends/partner/family to help - especially after arriving home.

    • I don't think moving 34kg qualifies you as strong, let alone 'super strong'. Maybe 'average human being'?

    • +1

I purchased on the weekend and it came in 3 boxes around 20kg each

    • +2

Looks to be a little more manageable now
      3 packages ~ 20kg

formaldehyde in the bedroom .. NO THANK YOU!

    • +11

How else will one get laid?

    • +1

      Read Improvement #42: http://www.ikea.com/ms/en_CN/about_ikea/our_responsibility/t…

Doesn't formaldehyde occur in natural wood? If IKEA levels are close to that, would that be a problem?

    • +1

As long as you're not licking the timber I wouldn't be too concerned about formaldehyde and even then the particle board is covered by a veneer.

    • When you go to Bunnings to buy plywood, there is more formaldehyde in that! You actually have to search for low formaldehyde plywood if you are going down that path of being formaldehyde free.

  • The link doesn't work for me, but I found on the website.

  • A piece of junk. Sags in the middle and the bottom draws are flimsy. I would not buy again for $499.

    • MDF Chipboard: Chipboard compressed wood sux for lots of uses + formaldehyde .. not a good idea.

    • +4

My daughter has the same style of drawers purchased a while ago and I agree the bottoms of the drawers are flimsy with no support and can pop out.

But I checked out these latest ones, and they come with a support for under the larger drawers now. Snapped them up for $299 and am very happy.

    • +3

They've improved the supports in recent years. My daughter has a set in her bedroom and they are very good value for money. By all means go to Freedom etc and pay double, but the quality in my experience is no better and often worse.

      • +1

Agree with above comment. Have paid on "prestigious" brands and quality-wise is much the same as this. Until they start using hardwood again for furniture (yes I know some companies still do) then these aren't built to last a lifetime - it should last 5-10years but you'd be in lala-land to think it'll last longer - goes for most furniture/hardware/electronics nowadays.

        • If you want quality that lasts, the only option is going someone who's got a small woodworking shop where you can choose what you want and how you want. Of course pricing will be different.

          Or make your own :)

To all those who have a chest of drawers that is saggy in the middle and bottoms that pop out: fear no more.

My old man resurrected a Hemnes chest found on the street that had bottoms popped out past the point of no return.
He pushed the bottom back in, cut a wooden slat to size and glued it onto the bottom (underneath the drawer so you cant tell).
He placed brackets at the end of the slats and drilled screws into the front and back boards to hold the slat.
Now we've got a solidly built Hemnes chest.

I have the same drawers in this post which was bought 5 years ago with no sag. Solidly built and yet to be reinforced as above.

    • +1

Your old man is a genius man.

      • indeed he is. but you dont need to do this any more. the big drawers all come with metal support arms now.

        Ikea hacks. It's a thing:

        Hemnes hacks

  • Do you think strong enough to sit a 40" TV on top, weight about 10kgs? No middle leg in front concerns me.

    • +2

40" TV should be ok - I put 47" LG LED TV :)
However make sure you secure the HEMNES chest to the wall, please it's for safety.

      • Does it look strange with the TV on top? Considering this too, although the tv units are similar prices.

        • +1

          For bedroom, no
          For anywhere else, yes

        • +1

It's a bit too tall to be use as a TV unit in the living room.

    • +1

The thing you should be worried about is that it may topple forward - if you have a few of the higher drawers open at the same time with heavy items in them. You don't want your TV to be sitting on top of the chest in addition to the chest falling on you!

I've got my 55" tv on top of this: http://www.ikea.com/au/en/catalog/products/00227796/

You should shop around and there should be enough choices to suit your needs: http://www.ikea.com/au/en/catalog/categories/departments/liv…

      • +1

All Ikea drawers etc now come with an attachment to secure them against the wall. Plus stickers on the bottom of each drawer prompting you to make sure you secure it. I think some kids got pretty badly injured a little while back when ikea drawers fell on them prompting this change.

      • Do you find these tv shelves to be decent quality? I found their coffee tables and chest of drawers deteriorated really badly over time.

  • Bought red-brown one last month at IKEA Marsden Park. After assembling I found the top and middle draws cannot be closed. I checked the manual and believe the
assembling is all right. I can't believe IKEA can make such a mistake. If so there should be more faulty products in the market.
I brought it to store asked for exchange. The stuffs checked and confirmed the defect, but they can't explain why it happened. Then they gave me a new one from another supplier.
I spent another 3 hours to build the new one, fortunately this one didn't get any problems.

    • Top and middle drawers, I had the same issues too but it was the middle and bottom drawers, it was a simple 'ah' maybe the bottom drawer is for the middle and vice versa and it did the trick.

  • Got one of these, the amount of storage is great but it is a massive pain to build.

Also one of the small drawers at the top doesn't slide in smoothly. The rest of the unit seems square and all of the other drawers close nicely, so I suspect one of the rails is a bit dodgy. It can be pushed closed with minimal force so it's not that bad, but noticeable compared with the others.

    • +2

I had the same issue too, try tightening the screw. Mine was 'fine' till my little daughter decided it was a good idea to seat on opened drawer and bent the rail. After getting a spare rail from IKEA we had the same issue as yours when we couldn't tighten the screw anymore.

      • Will give it a crack! Thanks.

        • Aha! I have the same issue. Small drawer. Second from right. Scrapes top. Will check the screws but I'm pretty sure it's in tight - I used a drill on very low screwdriver setting…

        • @ccrap: mines the second from the right as well. I haven't had time to try and fix yet, will let you know if my rails seem off.

  • So glad i scored one of these for $99 off Gumtree not long back. Nice large chest, just has the problem with the sagging. I might look into the sag fixes mentioned above :)

  • +1

Great drawers, but, learn from my mistake - make sure the damn screws in the drawer tracks are COMPLETELY flush otherwise you are going to have very annoying drawers to open.

Pure junk AND you have to put it together yourself. One of the greatest scams of retail marketing genius.

After loving Ikea during uni I realised that the majority of their stuff is cheap, poorly made crap.
    Wardrobes= fail
Drawers= saggy fail in middle (although sounds like they've fixed this with the brackets)
    Couches=crap
    beds=crap
    kitchens= crap

I laugh when people talk about somewhere like Freedom being overpriced, but Freedom's design and build quality are waaayyy better than Ikea's trash put together yourself, flimsy, cheap junk.
