100k return to Japan for 2 people including 20kg baggage. not bad.

    • +6

      Check taxes lol

      • +2

        Ohh

        • +1

          How much were they?

        • +1

@OneMoreTune: Dunno. I didnt have 100k anyways. Only got 29k. and 100k is about $1000, so not worth it redeemping for flights

        • @Turd: I didn't think it was that much. I've done 130k points and spent $420 for flights through US from Melbourne

        • -2

          @Turd:

Better save those points for Sydney property

        • @Turd: Ah ok cheers.

        • @Turd: afaik it's generally worth it to push for an upgrade in flight class, but that's about it.

        • @Rumstein: I dont see a point flying in a higher class tbh

        • @Turd: When you occasionally say "tbh", one would think that you are mostly dishonest…tbh.

        • +1

          @superready: is that so?

Coz most of time for example I buy when Qantas has sales, so usually these tickets always never allow upgrades using points.

But each to own, there are limited seats for y class and above anyways.

        • @Turd: cool down I was just joking with words out of pure boredom…wasn't even interested on the flight topic nor do I know anything about anything.

  • Thanks OP.

This is the way it should always be, IMHO.

edit: how do the fees compare does anyone know? Are they identical?

    • Punch in flights to find out.

I believe Jetstar taxes are relatively the same, it's mainly because the fares are much lower they lose value.

i.e. same leg a $1000 Qantas flight maybe $250 of taxes. A $500 Jetstar flight is $250 of taxes. So Qantas is "better value" for redemption.

    • +1

Exactly right. A Jetstar flight should be AT LEAST 25% less points. But the taxes are absolutely prohibitive. I would say this is not even a deal to be honest.

      • But Jetstar redemptions are already 20% less than Qantas in points terms.
        Qantas MEL-SYD would cost 8000 + $$
        Jetstar MEL-SYD is 6400 + $$

Jetstar MEL-SYD under this promo is now 4800 + $$. So it is good value and you get 20kgs luggage included.

        • Is baggage included?

I thought so too when I used this deal to redeem Qantas points for a Syd-Tokyo flight in late August. However when I checked the booking on the Jetstar flight, it did not have any baggage included.

More than happy if someone corrects me here.

        • @rpalmer: I believe baggage is included for MEL-SYD, I just booked 3 people Adelaide to Sunshine Coast then Brisbane to Adelaide using my points. The first leg was Jetstar and baggage was included but seat selection wasn't, so if you want to pick your seats and have a meal like Qantas then you need to pay extra. I think the rules may be different for international though.

  • but the TAX is so high! Better off redeem jetstar voucher..HOWEVER, need to use it within 6 months!

It's not taxes its fuel surcharges. Virgin and other airlines don't charge them.

I would encourage Ozbargainers to read up on them

    • +2

I encourage you to do some reading yourself.

Here is an example of some fees charged on award bookings:

      Transportation Tax
      Immigration User Fee
      Safety and Security Charge
      Passenger Services Charge Intl
Passenger Civil Aviation Security Service Fee
      Passenger Movement Charge (PMC)
      Customs User Fee
      Transportation Tax
      APHIS User Fee

      • Lol @ all the BS fees they charge. I love the marketing team that came up with these words "Passenger Movement Charge" - Seriously?!!

        • +2

It's actually a Government charge, not an airline marketing term.
          https://www.border.gov.au/Trav/Ente/Goin/Departing/Passenger-Movement-Charge-(PMC)

        • It's not a marketing term. as Gilby has said, it is a government charge.

      • If you see a charge labelled YQ or YR then that is normally a fuel surcharge. Lots of good material out there ie http://millionmilesecrets.com/2015/11/08/dont-pay-fuel-surch…

  • +3

Somewhat dubious value given taxes for flights Ive looked at, tax portion is comparable to the actual fare if it was just booked with jetstar in cash

  • +3

Personally find redeeming economy flights to be a scam.

    1. When booked well in advance, discount tickets are real cheap. Ie. Syd - hk return for under $650. And if booked with point, the surcharges amount to app $3xx.

    2. Assuming booking exp tickets last mine (to make the points better value), extremely unlikely there is a single seat available for redemption.

Save your points for business instead, or gift cards.

It really depends which airlines you book with. I booked Vietnam - Osaka flying Japan Airlines return for $75 pp. This was through Qantas Classic Rewards as well.

      • @nightelves - how did you book JAL with Classic Rewards?
AFAIK you can't do it via the Qantas site….

        • +2

Route dependent. Just booked CX sg-hk return on biz via qf site. App $100 aud tax.

        • +1

You are correct. I did not do it through classic rewards site. I searched for availability on Japan Airlines wrote down the flight number, date and time. With those info I then called Qantas customer service to book the flight.

          @googleyahoo69:
          Nice work!
I understand fees are much lower when the carrier is CX or AA

        • @nightelves:

I also want to book a trip to Vietnam, then Tokyo, are you fighting from Sydney or Mel?

        • @divious:

Yes flying from Mel. Happy to walk you through the process from SGN-HND or ITM. Just something to think about. If you have 140k points you can easily visit many more destinations with one world RTW redemption.

I redeemed 56k points and $75 for flights from SGN-ITM which I believe is poor use of points as you can easily find flights from here to Tokyo or Osaka with Jetstar for $400-$500 return. Really depends on how you value your points.
