  • Would Optus still provide $20 discount if bundled with a mobile plan?

    • Looks like it's gone…

    • Nope. I tried to get it last week and was told they no longer offer the bundle deal.

  • ADSL is crap for me and I won't get NBN until at least mid 2019. So I went with Home Wireless Broadband - very happy with it.

Seems NBN have some capacity issues of their own based on recent media reports.

    • Seems NBN have some capacity issues of their own based on recent media reports.

Nothing to do with the NBN exactly (apart from the high CVC charges). It's all on RSP's not paying enough for it and allowing such high contention ratios to save $$.

      • -3

That's what NBN Co's PR agency said.

        • +5

And unless you want you're house raided by the feds, I'd stick with the official line

        • +1

It's true ….NBN connects you to the poi and the internet provider has to supply carriage from their and some skimp….. There isn't data that shows how much capacity and utilisation the service providers have from the poi to the internet.

    • What kind of download and upload speed do you experience with the home wireless broadband? Does it vary much throughout the day?

    • So I went with Home Wireless Broadband - very happy with it.

Would you mind providing details on this?

      • sure - I have a household of 7 and the 3Mbs was killing us. On HWBB I get about 13Mbs and have not had a complaint since. I know it's not NBN speed but it's quality ADSL speed and 4x faster than what we have had for the last 10 years

        • Who did you go with, and on which plan? I am trying to work out if this is feasible for me but the plans seem at least 2x the price for anything close to what I need :-/

  • +4

    includes home phone line (voip)

    voip isn't a home phone line…

    • -5

what do you know? Do you have any qualifications?

      • +2

well VOIP != POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service).
If your ADSL is down (OMG you mean ADSL doesn't always work????), then there's no phoneline.

Anyone who has ADSL & Telstra phone line, knows that the phone usually works even when ADSL is down. ANyone with flooding issues over the past few weeks will testify to that.

        • You missed the /s at the end of the sentence

        • @michaelTito: even worse I'm defending JV & its 9 days into April
<sigh> I'm blaming the early release of easter eggs

    • Not that surprising from the industry that uses images of athletes doing things to explain how fast the service is. It's almost factually correct even.

      • I haven't yet seen an advertisement in the tech industry that states the speed of the product in a technical unit of measurement.

    • -5

      Do you have a qualification?

  • +2

Bit confused, it says, adsl, cable or nbn….

So I'm on optus cable home bundle $90. I finished my 2 year contract so If I went with this $60 offer would I continue having cable internet and at what speed?

    • +1

i'm guessing you've got a fetchTV box, unlimited calls, etc?

      • +1

Or did you get the Samsung tab S tablet?
i have to wait a couple of months for my contract to end, hope this is still around by then.

      • +1

Yes the one with fetch and Samsung tablet.

        • You'd probably have to hand the fetch box back (not sure about the tablet).

        • @supabrudda:

Hand it back why LOL I freaking paid for it.

        • @drazenm:

Not according to Optus. You're renting it with your fetch plan, unless you actually went to JB or a retailer and paid the $200.

If you swap over you will either
          a) Send back the Fetch box or be charged $200
          or
          b) Pay $20 per month to get the Fetch bundle added to the $60 service. Note, this Fetch bundle is LESS channels than you get on the pack your currently on.

I looked at it when it came out, but what I'm getting in my $90 bundle (speed pack, more channels, unlimited calls) makes this less of an offer.

        • @phluffed:I'm pretty sure you repaid the fetch box and the tablet in 2 years contract. What you're saying that you need to return it is absolute stupidity.

        • @drazenm:

If you say so. Somebody better tell Optus however, cause the letter my friend got clearly says "return by XXXXX date or be charged $200." He had been with them for 4 years at that point.

    • +2

After you type in your address, it says up to 30Mbps on the $80 plan. Not as good as the $90 unlimited plan with up to 100Mbps and free telephone calls.

      • +2

yeah although during school hols it's more like 100kbps

  • $60/month for unlimited cable is a great price compared to Telstra cable offerings. The speed doesn't seem to be advertised anywhere tho? Is it their standard 30mbps/256kbps cable?

    • 30mbps down 2mbps up i was told.

      • Correct, and it doesn't look like you can select the speedboost on the $60 plan, you can on the $80 plan for an extra $20

    • +1

Yeah until the congestion makes it so bad you can't do anything peak hour. Optus's network it shit and I can't even play games or watch netflix peak time and have to tether my phone to do any of that peak hour.

      • Thanks. I'm on 100mbps Telstra cable and can always max it, even in peak

    • Be wary of jumping on to an unlimited cable plan. The more people who download on your node, the slower the internet speed. You will generally receive very slow speeds during peak hour. Also optus have not upgraded their netgear cable modem for a long time so it is old wireless technology. They are no longer investing in cable broadband because everyone will eventually move onto NBN. Hence the drop in the price.

  • Pretty good value compared to my 250gb $59.99 naked ADSL2 from Internode. Anyone know if this is cable and what's their max speed on this? any faster than 30mbps/256kbs?

Only scary thought is that this is month-to-month afterall. They could up prices mid way and I'm fked since it's not under contract?

    • For the $60 plan its the basic speed offering. You need to pay extra if you want a faster speed.

      NBN
      Up to 12 Mbps Download
      Up to 1 Mbps Upload

      Cable
      Up to 30 Mbps Download
      Up to 2 Mbps Upload

      ADSL 2+
      Up to 20 Mbps Download
      Up to 1 Mbps Upload

  • I'm currently paying 75 per month for Optus Cable. Can I just call in and ask to get this?

    • +1

you certainly won't get it if you don't ring LOL
I have in the past rung and been put on a new contract at the lower price even though I was still under contract

      • 'Mirror Mirror on the wall, who is the fairest ISP of them all?'

  • +4

"Up to" which is not a committment.. Im on optus cable 30mbps and currently getting 1.5mbps and upload non existing upload speed during peak times. Contacted optus support and basically they cant resolve my slow internet.Theyre oversubscribed and flatly told me maybe i should look for another provider.

    • Yeah worst decision to move to Optus. On TPG was getting 11mbps download. came to Optus and consistently getting 2mbps. I will definitely ring them and see if I can get out of the contract. Been at this speed since November.

      • is this adsl?

      • To be fair I'm on Optus Cable and it does depend on your area. I've been with them for 2.5 years and while it does slow down to 20-30 mbit during peak periods for me, outside of those hours (5pm-8pm) I have no issue averaging 9-9.5MB a second.

Also they do seem to have some QOS on Youtube and Netflix to allow for 1080p/2160p streaming during peak periods without issue.

Sure some people have issues but there are plenty of users that are happy with them as well. It really depends on your area.

I average 1-2TB a month on cable. Something I could only dream of on ADSL

        • The speed will only get worse as more people jump onto your node with these cheaper unlimited plans. Optus no longer invests in their cable technology as the NBN takes over.

    • When I was on the 30mbps plan I could often test at up to 35mbps. Now I'm on their 100mbps plan and while I normally get 50-60 I'm pretty happy with that as I got the upgrade for free. If you are getting that low speeds on cable then I would ask them to have a look at the actual cabling going into your hose or at the exchange, or if you are on a large block as I used to be, then consider an amplifier in the line.

    • Same here, I actually switched from Optus cable to some 3rd party ADSL2 (Telstra line). Still not great during peak hour at times, but at least I'm not tied down anymore.

  • $60 nbn is 12Mbps
    $80 nbn is 25Mbps

  • Same price as previous with the $20 mobile phone discount.
This way you don't have to have your phone with them too i guess.

    • Previous offer included a phone line with standard national calls included

      • +1

True, only time I've ever used it was to find where I put my mobile, so I don't really think of that as something included.

        • +1

That line (for anyone that needs it) is worth around $30/month… I always recommend a physical line for emergencies or alarm systems. Obviously depends on whether you need to have that type of contingency.

        • But given it needs the modem, and hence power to the house, I doubt it's useful for those things?

  • optus any good for adsl2? do they allow line profiles to be easily changed?

  • +1

As a long term Optus user, who has no better options, for the love of anything that matters to you, AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!
I've had to force them into fixing issues via TIO multiple times and not all the time n my favour.
I'm out of pocket several hundred dollars due to Singtel/Optus incompetence, arrogance, lies and deceit.

    • +1

Think yourself lucky you are not with Telstra. Same or for many worse hassles, higher cost.

      • I took my mobile from a reseller to them.
Know exactly how bad they are too.
Appears customer service is beyond dead in regards to telco's these days.

  • +2

Internet deal with no advertised speeds, you gotta be kidding me.

  • +2

Optus's cable network is an oversubscribed mess. I get a 50% discount every month because of how shit it is. Only reason I don't change is because the adsl will be rubbish as well due to distance to the exchange.

    • +1

Do you mind PMing me the details of this, so I can seek the same compenstion?

      • Just complain threaten to leave and they have a team that deals with these cases.

They will offer you a discount for 12 months (varies based on how bad it is) They will also say it will get better in 6 months (it doesn't)

Optus knows once they lose a customer they will never be able to win them back which is why they are adopting this strategy.

  • +1

Agree with most posts above, have been getting terrible speeds from Optus ADSL and would definitely advise all to avoid. All went to shit around the same time optus started offering free fetch tv + netflix with plans. They don't seem to have enough bandwidth or they don't know how to manage traffic properly.

  • +1

wow… and i thought we were the only ones getting screwed with ridiculously low speeds and intermittent network especially during weekday peak and weekends. sick of optus adsl

  • I've been with Optus cable for 10+ years and generally get approx 18-20Mbps download, 1.5-1.8Mbps upload. Does that mean moving to NBN base plan would be a step back on 12Mbps down & 1Mbps up? Currently paying $55/month for 30GB with 2 x double data allowance per annum …. not sure if I should lock myself for 24-months & pay $5 extra each month till NBN is rolled out which might be in a couple of months.

    • See my comment below but the salesperson I spoke to said cable customers on this plan will be moved to an equivalent speed once the nbn rolls out, not downgraded. They said they are thinking of getting rid of the basic 12Mbit plan anyway.

So I don't think you'll be at a disadvantage if you sign up to this $60 offer. The only risk is if a better plan comes out in the meantime but don't think prices can get much lower than this 60 bucks unlimited plan.

The only possible risk is if you don't recontract, when nbn comes out you may be signing onto the Basic speed plan as you're not on a contract (ie. Not sure if what the sales rep told me about speeds when switching from cable to nbn applies to cable customers out of contract).

  • Anyone changed their rate plan from old existing one?
Just interested to know how fast they change it and if you get email notification straight away?

    • I called up and signed up for this as a recontract (I'm currently on a very old Optus Cable plan).

It requires someone to physically come on site who will give me the new free wireless cable router so I have booked the guy to come in a few weeks. Not sure why they need to send someone out, but maybe it's to test the phone (voip) which I currently don't have (and won't use anyway).

The new plan will be active from that date.

Note that when NBN comes along, they said they will switch me to an equivalent speed (ie. Won't downgrade to the Basic 12Mbit plan).

  • does the optus supplied "voice" line on cable work with back to base alarms?

    • +1

I rang them and they advised, yes

      • Can confirm it works with my back-to-base alarm

        • Thank you, appreciated

  • Anyone in the 3020 area currently on Optus cable? Any feedback is much appreciated :)

  • Anyone heard of any inducements or "months off" deals (like they've had in the past) for new customers?

Any comments on the call quality of their home phone line (voip) service?

    • +1

Just signed up to their $89 NBN plan and activation is on 19/05. No discount possible, tried with several agents. Will advise later the line speed at peak times.
