          It's a simple trick: don't drop your phone :)

      • Quick Story time:

TLDR: The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 has a pretty pervasive eMMC memory issue, high failure rate ~1-1.5year mark.

Bought my Galaxy note 4 via goodguys ebay in Nov15 / Dec15 as per the docket invoice

Anyhow it suffered from a pretty pervasive problem, the memory eventually fails at around the ~1-1.5 year mark.

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/257894#comment-3863617

I'd get slowdowns, freezes, random reboots and it progressed along to failure to boot screens with the MMC read fail screen. I could still pull the battery to restart it but obviously in it goes to warranty.

This issue always comes up in http://www.reddit.com/r/galaxynote4 and a simple google search for the terms will give you hits for both the Note 4 and possibly other samsung phones - the s5 (probably same shitty batch of memory).

Unfortunately this issue isn't publicised much at all (in comparison to the G4 bootloop and Note 7 crap).

mainboard was replaced for it anyhow - 2nd issue the recent apps capacitive button would activate itself in poor reception/ heavy cell radio activity (4g,etc) - whole screen + usb daughterboard was replaced.

If it had been elsewhere in the world without a 2 year warranty I'd be shit out of luck.

and a removable battery really extends the life of the phone too, been through at least 2 batteries so far

        • -4

You (and others who neg'ed me) are completely missing the point. As if I am somehow disputing that phones can break down (sigh….)

I did not say that warranty is never needed. I am saying that on the long run, given how often a typical phone is returned under warranty, the ~30% extra people pay to get that warranty are bad economics. It's simple statistics.

My wife and I have been through 12 phones during the last 7 years or so. None of them have needed warranty.

        • @Make it so:

In my experience I've bought 3 flagship purchases in the past ~3 years that have needed warranty:

          2x G4s which had bootloops
1x Note 4 eMMC + capacitive button issue

And yes I did save on the purchases - the Note 4 was local stock during a 20% off ebay - the G4s were grey imports using 15% off and a 20% off and came with 1 year warranty - 1 G4 (from Kogan) was fully credited and used towards an s7 edge, the other G4 was repaired and returned.

        • @loke: Do you think your situation is a typical one? Reflective of the average user? Because that's where those long-term statistics I mentioned come in.

        • What's with all the negs… (will I be bestowed one too?) :S

I've had my fair share of issues with electronics. Secuirty cameras, DSLR Lenses, mobile phones, security cameras, dyson vacuum cleaners, the list goes on.

If you can wait and can get creative with CR, TRS, ebay coupons, vouchers etc, you can often get a local product at a much lower price. Yes I have had issues with a Note 4 (slowdowns, eventually woulnd't turn on) also and have had it replaced on the spot at a Samsung store.

Not everything must have a local warranty, but for a phone, which I use all the time for everything including work, I cannot afford down time. Saving $300 on grey stock is simply for me, false economy.

With the amount of technology that is being crammed into these phones nowadays, the risk of failure is much, much higher than say, your monochrome Nokia brick from the 90s. It is the same thing with cars. You can buy the latest euro BMercudiwagen with all the latest gadgets and gizmos, which is all well and good as long as you know all those features, when (not if) they fail down the road, is going to cost to rectify/repair.

I hope this post has made sense to at least 1 person. Often times I don't bother posting because there's just no point…

        • @highon2str: Sounds like a reasonable argument. Your point is that your time is worth more than the savings. For me, this is not the case. If it breaks, I'll get a grey-import shipped by express. I'm self-insured, and so far a few thousand ahead.

I have made use of warranty for things, but not for phones. And phones is one of those things where local purchase is marked up massively. Admittedly, some REP's have been putting great deals on Ozbargain for Australian stock, but I don't always want to wait for that.

        • loke: I had the exact same issues, random reboots, and slowdowns especially after firmware updates. I never realize my 4g would be an issue until I found out my partner Iphone's 4g reception was better than mine, especially underground carpark. Took it to Samsung and they replaced a new one for me. I should have done this earlier. I totally agree that local warranty is worth the extra money. Such a shame Samsung would fix grey import like Apple does.

    • There is a warranty, matey.

    • Only idiots pay more for every single device they own because maybe at some point one of them will require a warranty.

      • And will neg you for pointing it out :)

  • +4

Great price, but I bet when this arrives, there will be a deal for $420.

    • It's about that time!

  • Why 3 to 8 weeks?

    • 2-3 weeks to collect more buyers and ship it all at once? probably the 2 weeks to actually get it mailed

    • +12

Because 9 weeks would just be ridiculous.

    • It takes that long for the fire to go out
(just kidding, I know it was the Note)

  • +6

hi guys, any good deals for S7 edge?

  • Gotta be careful with American smartphones. Sometimes they dont tether which is a pretty important feature of a smartphone.

  • +1

So…. Apart from warranty, are these a good buy?

  • -1

But it's $485 delivered from Melbourne here

Guys, just read the reviews on these guys before purchasing. http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2212429

  • -4

Do they still catch on fire?

    • +2

      They never did.

      • -1

Sorry for my ignorance!!! I did a quick google and it was the S7 Note!, not the normal S7 oops lol

  • +1

Recently bought an S7 (930F) online from Hong Kong.
Just a few things to point out compared to an Aus Stock version.
    - the 930F is an international/UK version. Better than the US version if you live in Australia.
    - the 930F gets more official updates than the 930FD. Also I read the 930FD is a pain to update.
    - the 930F being the international/UK version, Android Pay is not yet available. In order to get this working you will need the flash your phone with an official Australian ROM. Otherwise you will have to wait until UK finally get Android Pay activated.
    - No Voice over 4G. I believe you will need to flash with official Australian ROM to get this working.
Other than these points, the phone is fantastic. I have not bothered reflashing with an Aus ROM, since none of these issues really bother me.

    • in regards to downloading a ROM, I'd say all the websites have some sort of rubbish premium membership in order to entice you into gaining access to decent download speeds

I recently flashed the normal AUS ROM over the Optus ROM for the S7

      I previously used:

https://samsung-firmware.org/ - but it turns out to heavily restrict your download to something similar to a snail's crawl and at the same time is non resumable and actually sporadically stops even

https://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/ - although they say otherwise actually gave me a ~200kB/s+ speed which is actually decent, enough to complete while using the computer and without leaving it on overnight (and iirc I think it was resumable).

rest is just, installing the USB drivers, putting the phone into download mode during boot and extracting the files out of the Archive and loading it into ODIN

edit: should note, make a backup first (titanium backup etc)

      • titanium backup requires root

        • yeah, the rootless one I used an age ago was helium to backup apps for my note 4

nowadays I don't even bother as the apps that use backup to drive/cloud

        • @loke:

Yeah, thought you meant you use titanium backup, which needs root, which trips knox, which voids warranty…

Its actually ridiculous that android doesn't have a built-in "titanium backup" feature, as most other backup apps either need to connect to the cloud ( no way ) or do not backup everything ( app settings/data etc)….

    • Are you saying that the model for sale here won't have android pay available?

  • Do they have a white one discounted? or any S7 white. i dont mind paying a bit more…
Also is Voice over LTE is that really an important feature?

  • +1

  • +1

    It's cheaper now, $484.50.

  • Made the jump, let's see how it goes :D

  • I have already bought one and apparently it should be arriving in the next couple of days..

I wanted to buy more so I thought let's just confirm with the seller that this model is in fact the G930F "international version" but they sent a reply:
"As described in our item specific, our S7 are USA model, 930V. The number you seen is the inventory number automatically added to our item descripion by ebay system."

WTF? I guess we've all bought the US version!

Has anybody received theirs yet to confirm?

    • I'm still waiting on my two to arrive but if this is the case there are going to be a lot of disputes coming their way. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt though until mine arrive.

      • Yep, I'll wait until mine arrives and if it's 930V, PayPal dispute if they don't resolve it.

    • I just queried the same and got this response

      "Hi!

Sorry for our error typing, our S7 are USA model, N930V and will work excellent with all sim cards in Australia and Worldwide without problem, no worries".

      • +6

Well there's no need to wait anymore.
Received mine a few days ago. That same night my wife gave birth to our second body!!! :-DDD

Unfortunately it is as suspected. You can see that it is a verizon USA phone. They've done something very dodgy and flashed a G930F rom on it to make it look like G930F. Even changed the name of the phone. Obviously it would say G930V when it comes from verizon.

The USA galaxy s7's come with a different processor than the international and a locked bootloader which makes them hard to "root" and the only way to root them is via a dirty method which most people report over heating and phone lag.

They tried their best to make this look like G930F under the "about phone" but it's when you download proper app to show you the real info that you discover how dodgy they are! Download "phone info" from app store and you'll see what I mean.

Based on the last couple of days I've been using it, navigation (GPS) is very accurate but I get some really black spots in terms of cellular coverage! Even though I'm using Telstra and in metro Sydney.

Another thing is that my battery is not lasting anywhere as long as the reports showed when I was researching this phone "5 hours screen on time", I'm barely getting 2.5-3

I believe these are refurbished phones.

Unfortunately I found this website after I had purchased thanks to the poster above

        http://pdaphoneonline.com/smartphone-online-is-a-scam/

This will be going back for sure! The box was opened and there were little finger marks on the back, I think the reason they included "free" cheap accessories with the phone is to say "yes we had to open the box to put your accessories inside", BS!

Have a look at my screenshots below from phone info app

        http://i.imgur.com/awxaQtZ.png

        http://i.imgur.com/eg11abp.png

        • I held off buying this but finally felt like caving in. thanks for the heads up, hope everyone's PayPal disputes work out

        • +2

DO NOT SEND THE PHONE BACK WITHOUT LODGING A PAYPAL DISPUTE FIRST!

Many of the negative reviews on that website are of people saying they sent the phone in for refund or repair never to hear from the seller again!

        • @sirs2k:
They even sent a note encouraging you to not lodge an official dispute (https://ibb.co/jcEd85)

        • Damn. That's a bummer. And I thought I could finally upgrade from my oneplus one. I'm scheduled to receive mine tomorrow, fingers crossed it isn't a refurbished Verizon unit.
          Hopefully paypal can resolve quickly

        • Congrats mate!

Would they release funds before sending the phone?

Does anyone know how PayPal works in this case?

        • @justmiike:

Dang. But congratulations as well! I haven't received mine yet but I will go ahead and launch a dispute now. What's the best way of going about it? Just copy paste what you said about the phone being a Verizon phone?

        • +2

          @z00m:

Why not, it is accurate and in depth.

I haven't opened a dispute yet but will do.

However gallows the steps I gave you and check if it really is USA version. You might be lucky and have an actual international version

        • +2

          @sirs2k:

By the way, thanks for the well wishes guys! Loving life!

        • @sirs2k:

Yep will check first following the steps you described. Not holding my breath though, sounds like everyone has received the us version so far.

        • +1

@sirs2k: Just received the two I ordered and as expected they are G930V. Have requested they credit me for the return postage and have requested a refund.

    • Yep, got a 930V as well.

  • +2

G930F is Exynos version. Everyone is getting, what i believe to be G9300 flashed with verizon ROM or G930V.
    Other small inconsistencies:
NO plastic film on back, or any indication of a IMEI/Serial number sticker
Serial number coming up as 000000, despite the back of device saying otherwise
    no OTG adaptor
Tamper sticker was peeled back, indicating weak adhesive (probably the unlegit ones they use in refurb markets in Shenzhen)
In settings, "about phone" should be "about device" - no option to automatically upgrade to nougat. System update tabs replaced with "icon glossary"

Even the cutout where the phone was originally sitting in looks crudely cut and off center, like someone cut it with a jigwaw

obviously not new, and not the item described. I'm thinking this might even be counterfeit. Paypal claim lodged.

    • Exact same case with mine, pretty sure its just a refurbished G930V flashed with some dodgy custom rom as it doesn't have verizon bloatware on it. I started an eBay refund claim, worried that when I send it back I won't be refunded.

      • +1

I'm sending mine back tomorrow. Standard Auspost international shipping so I get a tracking number. if I don't get a refund when I give them the tracking number, i'm escalating to a paypal claim.
On the bright side, at least I can look forward to the oneplus 5.

        • Will you try to get your postage costs back?

        • +1

@justmiike: Hopefully, but not too stressed about that. If I can get just the cost of the phone back, i'll be satisfied.

        • @ifailbot: Awesome, let us know how you go!

        • They said they'd cover return postage costs via eBay message, i'd look into getting postage costs back from the dodgy *****.

        • @Jaqmax: Are you waiting for the refund before sending? Not sure how confident I am about that.

        • @justmiike: Nah don't think that works, you've gotta send them the tracking number and most likely wait until it arrives to get the refund.

        • +1

          @Jaqmax:

Yes they just forwarded $25 to my PayPal for the return postage and said to keep all accessories and just send the phone back by itself in box

        • @sirs2k: ive lodged an ebay return request (not a paypal dispute) and the seller has said they will be sending a return shipping label - is this what you guys got or did you go down the paypal dispute route.

        • @sdiddy88: I also lodged an eBay return request and was just told a return address to send it to via Auspost standard international shipping.

        • @sirs2k:

I just got this response from the seller trying to shift the blame onto me. Unbelievable.

Dear customer, Hello! We are sorry for your concern. As described in our item specific & item description, our phone is USA model(N920V from Verzion) + software unlocked. We afraid that you didn't finish reading our item specific and item description, so lead to the confused. Please note that MPN: SM-G930FZDAXSA is not the model number, it's an inventory stock number added by ebay system automatically & can't be removed. This is the reason why we also added USA model + software unlocked inside our item specific & item description(Attached please find a photo of our item specific for your information). Since we stated our phone is software unlocked, we need to unlock our phone and make it fit for use in Australia, so lead to your concern about phone was flashed, a software unlocked phone must be flashed because we used software to unlock to phone, it's very clear our phone is not factory unlocked. If you want a non-flashed Samsung phone, please don't purchase software unlocked phone, you need to look for a FACTORY UNLOCKED phone. Please don't worry, we offer 30 days No Reason Return, you can return the phone to us for full refund. Please feel free to let us know if you need return for full refund, we will provide you return details, sorry. Sincerely,

        • @z00m:

This is the exact msg I got from them too lol.

I got over msging them and just left it. I'm gonna leave a nice feedback when this is over

  • +3

Now, can someone please let us know where we can get an s7 for a good price from a seller not dodgy!?

    • I bought mine from vaya ebay during their 20% off deal last month. Took a while to arrive but phone was the G930F version. Always thought ~$519 for this phone seemed too good to be true. So chose the $629 phone with 20% discount rather than this $519 phone with 5% discount. It ended costing abit more but well worth the hassle.
      Original deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/302681

      • Looks like Vaya was the better option.

        • Yes I bought one for Dad during Vaya sale and he loves it..Now I am looking to buy one for myself as my S6 died few days ago….hoping another 20% sale comes on soon….

  • Has anyone been successful in getting their refund?

    • +2
      • thanks for the reply, just got mine a few minutes ago :)

        • How long did it take for the phone to arrive? I'm still waiting for mine.

        • +2

          @justmiike:
About 4 weeks from the day it got sent for me.

      • +1

Gee, mine was sent Jun, I wonder if it's just the same 2-3 phones being sent around and around…

        • It might be, explains why they wait 4 weeks before sending it out magically by DHL in a few days.

I got mine today, I'll check it when I get home.

  • Did anyone ever get this message from the seller?

"The parcel is now re-direct from EMS to DHL because shipping policy of EMS suddenly became extremely serious. EMS rejected our parcel because our parcel contains with lithium battery, even our EMS parcel shipped under safety exception PI967 regulation. The Note 7 and S7 edge explosions made most custom very serious and focus on parcel contains Samsung smartphone(No worries, your model is safe), this is out of our control and suddenly became very serious in this month.

DHL is one of the shipping company still allow parcel contains with battery, so the parcel is now passing to DHL. As a result, shipping status not yet updated to DHL website, we will inform you again once it transferred. We apologize for any inconvenience thus caused but be assured that the parcel will arrive within next week."

    • Yes. It actually means they sent it.
I checked my phone. I got this sms Jun 4. I received phone Jun 5.

On the phone, it was factory reset Jun 2.

So they don't ship out until they get a new refurb.

      • So, they wait until they get the phone, send you a BS message and then send it via DHL when they have a refurb?

Also, are you keeping your phone or sending it back?

        • That's what it sounds like.
DHL doesn't keep your phone for 4wks before delivering!

It's useless, crap 4G bands, that's why we only buy F models. If I wanted a V model it's on ebay for much less.

        • @furyou:

          Yep, thought as much.

I think Vodafone is okay with the V model since it supports all bands.

But, you would rather the F model.

Can't wait for mine to arrive so I can lodge an eBay return process.

  • Started an eBay return claim, looks like I got the same phone ifailbot described, but even worse, had finger marks all over the place and scratches everywhere. Just wow. Hope I get full refund and postage costs paid.

    • I posted back using the only method with the $25 budget. Note that doesn't give you tracking. So I don't know how long it'll take to arrive in HK, and how to get the refund.
      Ebay is no help.

      • Australian standard international shipping does provide tracking, not express. It's $5 more for a signature though.

It took 5 days to get to HK based off my tracking.

The seller refunded me $27 for postage, due to PayPal fees, so gave me an extra $1 more.

I sent the seller 2 messages from eBay, said refund in 1-3 business days.

I'm worried that you didn't get tracking. The post office should have given you an option, you shouldn't have sent without tracking.

        • I'm pissed with auspost too. I did it online, thinking I can be sure I copy the address correctly.
Then still I have to go into austpost. It said it had signature, but no track. I'm not sure what happened.
