I wish Panasonic 4k player comes down to this price ;)

    Good deal anyways at $198

  • +1

tempting! I'm going to wait for a cheap panasonic DMP-UB900

    • Is the Panasonic that much better than the Samsung?

      • +1

        Yes. Check AVS.

  • +3

    Amazing price, got one myself.

Can't help but think the format is DOA unfortunately though.

    • +1

It will only take off once it's cracked.

  • +21

Xbox one s is more value TBH…
Like that it works out at ~$99 for a xbox with ~3 games…

    • Exactly

    • +1

Thats why these are coming down on prices.

      • +2

I saw this deal and was wondering why people didn't just buy consoles. That said good price for a standalone player

        • +10
          1. Noise of the XBox One when running a Ultra HD disc is a deal killer for me in a home theatre environment unlike a standalone player.

          2. It may not pass through Dolby Atmos and DTS-X audio like standalone players, though this may have changed with this months update?

          3. And this is more a personal thing but for Ultra HD / Blu-Ray playback usability via both a remote and menu interface is better via a standalone player. YMMV.

Personally I would get the Panasonic player as it is better in picture for UltraHD and Blu-Ray Upscaling than both the Samsung and still even after the latest firmware update I believe than the Oppo 203. Check comparison thread over on AVS.

If's a good thing there is choice in the marketplace for those whose needs an XBox One suit and for those whom a Standalone player fits the bill. IMO.

        • @Spizz: Agree. However I'll look forward for the reviews on the Oppo 205 when released, which I believe will be the benchmark unit. Not so much for the price though :-)

        • +1

          @Spizz: XB1 s now supports Atmos and DTS-X
          http://news.xbox.com/2016/12/14/dolby-atmos-xbox-one-windows…
          https://www.engadget.com/2017/04/06/xbox-one-dolby-atmos-dts…

Not sure about noise. Xbox 360 used to do noise if I dont have any sound. Else it was find. If you like little bit of gaming, there is no brainer to get seperate player. Also XB1 has storage for other videos and games.

        • -2

@Gaggy: I have box XB1 and PS4 and I can say that the XB1 sound quality is not as good as the PS4. If you would like AIO player then the XB1S is no brainer however if you have a decent audio HT setup then I would look somewhere else. Cheers

        • @vinni9284: Cant compare XB1 with OPPO. But normally sound quality is good? Care to elaborate?

        • @Gaggy: The PS4 sound is louder and clearer than the XB1 with the same volume level on my Pioneer LX receiver.

I am not stating that the sound quality is poor on the XB1 but PS4 is better.

In my previous statement, I am not comparing with the OPPO considering that the OPPO is worth more than both the PS4 & XB1 combined.

Has anyone got both to compare rather than neg because you don't like my opinion?

Edit: My previous comment in relation to look for something else for a decent HT setup, I am referring to a dedicated Bluray Player to watch movies rather than using consoles.
I have an older Pioneer BDPLX54 and I use this to watch movies. Playing from this unit is way superior (sound quality wise) than the consoles. But that is from my experience.

        • @vinni9284: I was just making a point that you can always compare one product with other and they will always have some pros and cons.
Price of XB1 is pretty good atm and not to say great wireless gaming remote with UBD playback.
PS4 does not even support UBD. So you are again comparing altogether a different product which not even support that. OPPO is much more expensive. At the end, you get what you pay for. So if you are little bit in gaming, XB1 is much better value for money.

Great player have one myself. Has dual hdmi out so handy for those who don't want to upgrade their AV receiver. Also plays all region DVD with unlock code and samsung tv remote . 4k Netflix and YouTube. Also upscales your bluray. Very happy with mine.

  • +1

Will this work on my 59 inch CRT tube TV set?

    • +7

      Screen curvature should match nicely

      • I can fine tune it with a baseball bat or sledgehammer

    • +12

      Cathode Ray Tube tube?

  • +2

are these multi region for both blu ray and dvd?

    • +2

      No.
DVD region can be unlocked but not Blu-ray

4k blurays are region free however

  • So can these do anything an xbox one s can't?

  • Friends, for only $100 more get yourself a xbox one s as it can be used as a digital media centre (netflix, media from hdd, etc) even without gaming on it it seems like its worthwhile

    • This one does all the media playing too.

    • I'd get the Xbox One S. No reason not to also have the ability to game on it. Then there's that weird curved look… matter of taste I guess but I don't like it since I don't have a curved TV.

  • Thanks op!
Sorry for this question, at what point do these standalone bluray players become worthy over a xbone or ps4 considering the recent deals i've seen on them ?

  • I notice this one has a fan at the back. Previous products with fans have run a bit noisy at times. How does this one run - noisy? or is the fan not used / noisy? If it was in a cabinet I wouldn't care but am looking at this in a room where it will be on a shelf.

    • +4

Never heard the fan on mine. I think it only spins at a low rpm and seems to be silent despite the tiny size.

Good player at this price. We considered an Xbox one S but fan noise is a killer watching movies. Plus at the time Atmos and DTS:X wasn't on the horizon for the Xbone.

  • Just get an Xbox One S

    • +2

From my quick googling tye xbox one s picture quality for both 4k and upscaling is noticeably inferior and noisier. So if u want to game on it too sure bang for buck makes sense but otherwise it sounds like a silly choice to get an xbox when standalone player at this pricepoint.

      • I don't have one so wasn't aware of the fan noise and upscaling so fair point but I can't help feeling a standalone unit offers less value considering there's the option to also have a unit that plays games.

I have an xbox one elite and there is no fan noise at all!

        • +1

Yeah, that was my mantra with the ps3.. and ps4…. rarely used either tbh. I will say, with a 4k tv, if you wanna use dvd and bluray discs still… superiopr upscaling is very important (which i dont have since using a ps4 its all up to the tv if im watching discs, so tempted by this player… but in reality use chromecast more than anything), so a standalone player seems to be a clear winner if games are of little interest yet picture quality is.

        • It's not just the fan noise for me, it was a noisier disc drive too.

          Always preferred dedicated components too.

      • -2

Few people are reporting sound not all.If 4k in XB1 not great, it is good. There are many Samsung and Pana paid reviews there. So its a user's choice to choose. Normal person wont feel the difference.

  • +3

IF you are not into gaming then this is a great price for a great 4K player

I have both Xbox one s and the Samsung Player.

I personally prefer the Samsung for watching Blurays and 4K content , The Samsung has 2 HDMI out which meant I could send the VIDEO Feed to my 4K TV and the Audio feed to the AMP to decode the audio. My AV amp does not support 4K. So this is a great feature to have on a player.

I use the Xbox one S for Games

  • +1

I honestly don't think that most of us would actually notice the difference in 4k quality between this player and XB1, and those with super expensive 4K HDR 10bit TV sets who can really tell the difference, would probably buy the Panasonic player anyway over the Samsung one :)

  • Will this 7.1 ouput work well with my 5.1 samsung soundbar? Sorry for noob question

    • +1

It should Downmix to 5.1 as One requirement built into all multichannel audio coding systems is backward compatibility.

      • Thanks! I'll grab this one then.

  • I bought an Xbox One S last year when all the sales were on. I also bought the official media remote, hoping that it would be as awesome as the PS3 media remote. It's complete rubbish. Lacks options for basic things like turning on subtitles, plus it feels cheap and rubbery. On hindsight, I wouldn't have purchased the Xbox for media playing and should have waited for deals like this.

The Xbox would redeem itself if Microsoft allowed it to run Windows 10 Desktop on my TV but we're nowhere near that right now.

  • OK, i've accumulated a few BBC blu-rays via OB that i want to play so i can see some animals getting eaten by lions.
I've got a simple HDMI 23" LCD monitor, and a basic stereo system.
Not a gamer, so don't have any of that stuff.
Only have mobile broadband, so not using Netflix or anything like that.
    PC only plays DVD's.

Why don't i just buy this for $108?

    • +1

Go for it. Nothing to do with this thread though.

      • Oh i dunno - other blu-ray player options seem reasonably within scope…
I'm hoping for a suggestion other than that i've nominated, but maybe what i've linked to is perfectly fine.

The blu-rays i have don't say anything about region - i'm assuming they'll play on anything.

        • +2

This is a thread about a great price on a specific UHD player. You're not even talking about a UHD player.

        • Oh.

I was just starting to get the hang of this world, and then everything changes.

    • Why don't you just buy a BD-ROM for your computer and install that? Cheaper than $108…

      • Yeah, thanks, i might do that - probably an external one so i can nick stuff from the library with the laptop.
Just worried about getting something that is somehow region locked or otherwise incompatible…

  • Get another 5 % off with coupon from Thursday email blast. I don't know if the codes are exclusive to customer but it is one use per customer. Here is my code see if it works 9258ZKWZPHUQ26
    Total price $188.10

  • Got a call regarding lack of stock and discontinuation of this model. I'll be sad if I don't get it in the end :(

    • Hope you get one. I went to a store on Saturday that had none but we're happy to give me one for the price and order it in. It arrived yesterday. I bought for my parents as I think this is a great player.
