  • No data share sims… Come on Telstra, so tempted. Happy to pay the $4 extra/mo over Optus but data share sims are the deal breaker/maker!

    • +2

There is an option when you try to sign up

      • +1

Requires a $5/mo plan according to local store staff, has this changed?

        • optus is no longer free either, unless you have existing sim cards already

        • @Level380: If you have a supported plan you may still purchase data sims at a once off price of $5/ea. Just means I'm stuck on the older 10GB plan, opposed to the current 12GB equally priced offering.

        • @dyl: Not anymore. I had a supported plan and the once off fee for a data sim has been withdrawn. I jumped up and down about it, and still nothing. There is a thread in whirlpool over it being 'not for sale' anymore, so I'm not alone.

Those like you and me who have existing data sims are grandfathered in @ $0/month, but you won't get any more 'extra' data sims.

        • @Level380:

They can do it. I walked in, quoted the contract (Optus isn't meeting their contractual agreement by denying it) and was provided with one after about 2 minutes of explaining. The buttons are still all there and they're perfectly capable of it, it's just the difficulty of explaining you're still on the old plan, etc etc.

        • @dyl: when was the last time you 'did it'? You're only allowed 5 per plan, so its not something you do often.

          https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2515156

        • @Level380:

First time was last year, then again early this year (no more than 2 months ago). Only got the 2 data sims currently. Link mainly references cut off dates and struggles getting onto the plan, rather than getting data sims while on it. If you're still on it you should be fine, it's just a matter of laziness by your local Optus store staff. They must go through the full generic plan registration process to sign you up for a data sim (can take easily ~15 minutes, full ID check etc) for no commission at all. I found rural locations a little better, the city store employees were too busy tryna scam the public onto expensive contracts far above what they need.

Tl;Dr: they can do it, it's just a matter of laziness and the fact they receive no commission for ~15 minutes effort.

    • It does come with Data share. I signed up previously https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/289827 and added this unidays offer and I got 22gb paying total of $65/month.

    • I just recontracted my two sims and i got a text to say the shared data had increased between both sims

      • does this mean that if you do a data share you get bonus data?!

        • The bonus data that comes with this plan can be shared between all data share sims. Is that what you mean?

      • Not quite what Optus offered, the older Optus plans allowed for customers to buy $5 (once off payment) data share sims to share their pooled data too. Telstra has data pooling (similar to Optus), though not data sharing sims.

Currently I have a 10GB plan with the main sim in my phone and data share sim in my wifi device, covering everything for $36/mo. The Telstra offering would be worth the $4 more, but the second sim for my wifi device would set me back even more every month.

  • +3

    Call rate per minute ?

    • +9

Most have gone unlimited calls ….Telstra stuck in the stoneage . And tpg will grab some of their business once they get their towers up.

      • Telstra stuck in the stoneage

Nope, more like making any attempt to compare value with other providers a non-trivial task.

Which should tell you something right away.

    • Works out around $1 = 1 minute from memory… So 1,000 minutes.

  • +19

Get rid of these arbitrary call caps and just make them all unlimited.

    • +1

got to get that extra green while u can. Hustle hustle.

      love Telstra

  • +1

So Optus with free EPL and Telstra with free AFL, NRL & Netball games. Tough choice..

    • +2

      love the sarcasm

    • Optus Sport is $15 extra on the $40 plan if you sign up now.

    • Optus also has "free" (as in unmetered) music streaming of any service I believe.

  • I'm on a $70 BYO plan (ironically 10GB) that is expiring in 2 days. Can I carry my existing mobile number over to this?
EDIT: Realised it's for education people only.

    • +3

Threaten to leave and you would be able to get the current $70 plan with 15GB data for $50. People at whirlpool are getting it easily.

      • Do you have link for this?
Are people just going through Live Chat or phone call?

      • i tried on live chat and they didnt budge! Sux because I have been recontracting for years and I noticed new customers get cheaper deals and better plans.

    • You can change between any BYO plans without a fee, but you would be recontracting for another 12 months

  • So ahhh, what requirements does UNiDAYS actually have?

    • Paying the educaton tax ;)

    • +3

Still living with parents or moved out but parents help out with everything including paying for this plan?

  • +1

Is the 5GB bonus data (5+5bonus) for the life of the plan or only for the first 12 months?

  • When I try to order, after verifying with UNiDAYS the offer changes to $50/mo 8GB (5GB + 3GB bonus). Anybody else get this?

    • +1

It says bonus data 3gb plus 2gb unidays bonus data.

      • Thanks. Turns out it was a browser issue. It started working after I turned off a bunch of security settings and addons. Not sure exactly which one did the trick.

    • Happened to me too ($50 for 8GB). Went on chat and they said it was fine , and that the discount will apply when my bill arrived

First bill came, and it did not. So I'm stuck with this $50 plan sigh

      • Do you have a transcript of the conversation? Try them again even if you don't, they might credit you.

      • I did the same thing. Talk to them on the chat they can fix it up in 10 minutes.

        • Will do, thank god I screenshot the chat. Thanks ilikeradiohead and k120

  • Does it have to be in the same name as unidays account ?

  • Does telstra offer roaming like vodafone where its like $5 a day?

    • Nope

    • -2

They charge you $300 a day, effectively

    • +2

They have a different sort of thing where it's $5/$10 a day depending on the country you go to and you get a set amount of data. But different to the Vodafone one where you can use your plan's allowances.
      https://www.telstra.com.au/international-roaming/mobiles-on-…

      • $5 only applies to NZ so it's effectively $10 per day

  • +4

    students only?

    • -1

Yep. OP should have fricken written that in the OP.

  • This or Telstra $30 Prepaid Freedom plus? I use the Freedom plus $200 of international calls mostly to USA but occasionally to Germany.

  • -2

    This was never expired

  • +1

As someone who lives close enough to a Telstra Air hotspot that I have full reception - would I be able to replace my mobile plan (Vaya $18/m) & my home internet (TPG NBN @ $70/m)?

Would I be able to get close to about the same speed as my 2.5MB/s on TPG on an Telstra Air hotspot?

Seems I could save $50 a month by switching to this and getting rid of my NBN?

    • Seems like an interesting question.

For me, my Telstra Air hotspot near my place is not that good and I feel like it is not as fast as other Telstra Air hotspots. Therefore for me I can't really make the switch.

What is your close by Telstra Air hotspot like? Have you tested its speed and stability?

(Edit: To test it, maybe ask someone with a Telstra Air enabled account, and try it out first)

      • +1

What was the speed like? I won't be back at home until Tuesday but I don't know anyone with a Telstra sim. I might purchase a days internet for Fon wifi (uses the same hotspot) and test that specific hotspot then.

I live in an area where there's hundreds of apartments that would have access to that hotspot so it may be contested at times.

This could save me a lot of money!

        • +1

Do u use any other devices to use the internet? Coz only ur mobile will be able to access the Telstra air so that could be an issue if u have an iPad or computer.

The issue I think u might have is login in every 20 minutes of inactivity, which could get annoying. Plus this is only for the next 11 months or so, it ends end of march 18.

        • +1

Weird, I can't seem to connect to it anymore… Just says unable to join across my devices.

Anyways, see if you can test the speed at the peak-hour (popular times when most people are using internet), and if the speed is good and stable, then this might be a very good deal for you.

        • +1

          @cloudy:

I use a lot of devices. Can't it be used with a computer, and then shared over my network? I could see the hotspot with my laptop and login that way - although I didn't have a Telstra ID at the time.

Fair enough about the march 18 cutoff. I guess I could only use it till then if it would work at all.

        • +2

          @c0balt:

So my understanding is if u have a broadband connection with them you get 3 logins for multiple devices but with a mobile device it's just your mobile that can connect. I may be wrong though.

    • +3

My local telstra air is someones router in local apartments, its capped at 200Kb/s. Its super stable but 100+ ping in any online game.

      • +1

Thanks for that. That speed would be way too low for my main connection. Perhaps it is restricted to when the hotspot is from another persons router?

I have a feeling my hotspot is a converted Telstra public phone box. It has the signage on it and I can see it from my window.

Maybe it will have faster speeds?

        • +1

Speeds from phone boxes, dedicated hotspots and telstra stores vary. I've seen speeds similar to the ones from peoples homes (which are capped to 2Mbit down) to 250Mbit+ down and up and just about everything in between.

        • Most phone hotspots will be ADSL modems, so the speed is based on how far you are from your exchange or RIM.

    • +1

True but all laptops and computers have to login to telstra air everytime you want to use internet. Times out after 15 to 20 mins and max 12 hour sessions. A lot of hassle if you use your computer or a smart TV a bit.

  • On the final page when signing up, it asks for "Special offers - Your special offer code:". Anyone have a code?

  • Sadly, I'm not a student anymore

  • This is a bit rubbish. Limited to students only. If the company can afford it, why can't I have it too?

  • +3

    Bit weird
    Included Local calls: $1000
    Included Local text: Unlimited
Calls and text from Australia to 10 selected countries: Unlimited !!
    Should be other way around.

    • +1

"Hey boss can you sign off this offer?"
"Hmmm the numbers check out, but still it just seems a little too generous"
"sigh okay whatever I'll make it $1000 calls instead of unlimited"

  • +2

Might sign up, Sick of endless drop outs with jeenee/optus. 3rd world internet sucks, like being with vodafone 10 years ago

  • Anyone know how to get this if not a student?

    • My order summary says under the heading UNiDays $10 Credit:

      Block-quote
"Standard minimum monthly charges apply after 12 month term expires"

      The data says

      Block-quote
"for the like of your contract".

Should this deal mention that the discount expires after 12 months?

  • Choice anxiety, which to choose Telstra deal or Optus deal (as a non student)?
Prefer Telstra network, but Optus deal is much sweeter (extra 2gb and free streaming on the music apps I use eg. spotify and pandora.

    Thoughts?

    • +2

Telstra if coverage is a concern.

Optus if you stream regularly (more than 2 hours a day)

    • If you use apple music, you get free streaming too

      • Android all the way…thanks though!

        • with LBJ?

    • Chatting with Telstra 24x7 livechat, and they wont give me the same deal, because I'm not a student… do i just need to persist more?

  • I think by 2019, Telstra will finally be there with real value. This is a good deal but they still lag behind.

    • By 2019 the definition of value will have shifted too.

  • So if you want to make a call to a country that is not on the list it comes out of the $1000 credit?

  • anyone else asked to pay $150 upfront to process their order?

Now they are saying this offer has expired earlier that there is no offer associated with my order lol

    • My 2 orders went through fine. I received confirmation emails and texts about my new shared data amount.

Is it a new service or are you reconstructing?

      • This is the first time I signed for Telstra. I received emails comfirming my order and then Received an email to call a number to provide details about my order or it will get cancelled within 7 days, when I called that number recorded voice plays saying promotion has expired. So i called customer service, she first said you need to pay $150 before we can process your order it's something related to credit assessment or something. Then she asked what plan did I choose So I told her about this UNIDAYS offer and she was like this offer is already expired few days ago and that my order is not associated with any plan, then she said she will call me back after confirming some details and I didn't get any call.

        • +2

Very unusual. Try the Telstra retention department. They sorted out my previous issue: 1800 008 843.

  • Anyone know whether Apple Music free 3 months will stack with this plan ?

    3 months + 6 months = 9 months of Apple Music?

  • -1

Might be a stupid question but do I need a Telstra SIM for this?

    Cheers.
