  • Seems cheap

That's literally the first thing in the description.
      Furthermore, it's in bold.
      But yeah- no band 28!

      • +1

I don't think this phone has band 28. Just a heads up.

  • Does this have a notification led?

  • +1

    "3G: WCDMA 900/2100MHz "
    No Telstra 3G ???

    • yeah not Australian enough.. period.. man lol

go after Huawei / Samsung / LG lot and pay 2X 3X 4X price :p better yet.. bite the fruit and pay 6X

I am actually surprised to find via a youtuber that this UMI company actually UPDATES their devices.. it now has 7.0 ROM for power plays to toy with…. hmmmmm

Should you pay 50 more for Redmi note 4X? I got one for 202 shipped and it don't even have 7.0 ROM

      • +1

Your sarcasms confused me. What are you saying here?

So Telstra is theory is handicapped in this phone due to no 3G? But otherwise everything is good ?

        • for the price it is asking, one will have to let go of the Band28 regardless, Redmi note 3 special Taiwan edition have band 28 and barely 50 dollar more last year. sadly the new Redmi note 4/4x still don't have band 28 but it already have a lot more supported bandwidth on the chipset.

We may need to wait for next next generation of MTK chipset to support band28 standard. Next snap dragon camp solutions seem to be getting close to band 28 across board.

          bottom line, wypiwyg!

This UMI company is already a surprise to me, given I find 7.0 Rom laying around and updated every two months!

So if I didn't have a note 4X already, I be giving this a spin.

        • @jackau:

Thanks, I'm not really worried about Band 28 where I live. My wife's Samsung Galaxy S5 just died (sorta) so I'm on the lookout for something cheap and a key point is good battery life because her second life is something called Facebook, tapping away like her life depended on it and this chews the battery, so I think 4000mAh will get her a full day of Facebooking… On the plus side she nags me less when she's on that thing. It's been a rough few days since her phone broke.

On a final note, wow "WYPIWYG" that's an acronym and a half, I had to google that.

        • +1

no 2300mhz if you are TPG (voda), no 700 if Telstra or Optus ……

It's not the processor that determines what bands you get …. it's the engineers ….. and they say Australia is such a small market for them they'd rather spend time at karoke or yum cha than modify their software to support band 28.

These phones are made for China and India …. not Australia.

Hell even my Moto G4 has band 28, and lost of sub $100 phones (HD, not FHD) ate coles and woolies with band 28 ….because they are targeted at Australian market…. not processors.

Heck even the Samsung S5 had band 28 ….. and that is now how many years old …….

Maybe Korean engineers are just better coders.

        • @garage sale:

Okay so all 3 networks are gimped. Not looking too good anymore, think I'll pass. Thanks.

          @Click_It:

I best tell you what you be in for as I have brought a few of these third tier chinese phone producer devices.

so that's my money burnt to sum up the pro and con for myself.

These devices claim to have nice cameras modules from this and that company but they don't optimise them, hence you be getting washed out images and bad auto focus, slow camera start up etc, hence if you are not concern of image department, then this is a good buy.

The price premium for android camp are as follows:
Tier 0: Google (all nexus included), for the brand and intimate big bro experience and occasionally first party update glitch, Not worth it IMO unless you are a dev.
Tier 1: Samsung, LG, Huawei, sony etc and the rest of the China gang like Xiaomi, Meizu, oppo, they offer premium quality devices with brand recognition, decent ROM for ones liking and fine tuned camera front and back at hardware level. Better battery optimisation and some official Root features such as Xiaomi and Huaweis background app killing security software. plus cloud backup find your hone support etc etc
Tier 2: Chuwei / Yotaphone /Smartisan / LeTV / Asus / Acer / Lenovo etc etc These companies may be able to do one or two things on the check list of tier 1 at tier 1 level but has short coming at others or phone isn't their core business and may or may not drop the whole thing all together, hence expect software support to be dropped out of the blue …and don't expect a long term support through out life of the device.
Tier 3: UMI and many others, These would close doors tomorrow and their devices seem to copy the look of Tier 1 makers to the point that they seem like counterfeit handbags. Normally they offer Pure Google Rom with little modification, prior to MTK P10, their OS version would stop at whatever the phone shipped with, OTA or even new ROM is out of question completely… There will be no camera fine tuning, slow to none phone breaking bug support, no google security patch support. Do not recommend them as primary devices in the land of down under… good For hobby and ROM flashing fun

      • stick to the xiaomi phone, it gets software updates every 2 weeks including security patches, xiaomi is a reputable company

        • I would rather be getting pure Google with official security patches and updated drivers every two months, if likes of UMI continue their trend of support.

the biggest stupid for google as a whole is they themselves drop support for their own branded flagships within 24 months, which is come on! that's design to made outdated worst than Apple and Microsoft ecosystems. Hence there is no point paying GOOGLE brand first party vs the third parties which has longer support for less money invested in.

Xiao mi so far has supported Mi4 from 4.4 all the way to 6.0, that is a big plus.

        • +1

@jackau: even 4 year old xiaomi phones are still getting security patches today lol

  • What's a good alternative to this phone in the Xiaomi line up?

Would like a battery >4000mAh if possible. <$150 would be great. Screen size 5.0 - 5.5", everything else can be mid range specs.
Oh and not missing so many frequencies like this deal.

    • +1

The Redmi note 3 international Taiwan edition has Band 28, if you can find them at 220 AUD or less shipped, it is a good buy.
It has 4000 mah battery, all right cameras and Apples gonna sue them MiUI.

The next best thing without band 28 are the whole confusing RedMi note 4/4X Redmi4/4prime / 4X series, all of them has 4000 mah battery to boot and the snapdragon 625 powered versions has longer battery life than Redmi mote 3!

Sadly thanks to Trump and Turn'Bull', Australian dollar isn't going to go back to 1 USD = 95 cent AUD days any time soon, hence these phones wont be 150 AUD level.

I personally do not recommend 2GB 16G version of any android devices as the OS is so hungry, I wonder what sort of spying software has to be on there to have it run…

I brought my Huawei honor 6 at 296 AUD at the time 32GB version and got burnt by freaking Huawei for not upgrading it via OTA to 6.0 and what was released was a version full of bugs! So no Huawei for me again!

      • Thanks jackau, sounds like you know your stuff with these chinese phones! :)

Any thoughts on other outside brands like Asus or even Lenovo? Same as above, mid-range specs but a battery >4000mAh. I know Asus Zenfone Max has 5000mAh.

        • at this stage, most 150 AUD level devices are either third Tier or 2GB versions I wouldn't touch. Since Google pixel throws out 4GB standard, every tier 1/2 makers had to boost their rams to minimum of 3/4GB standard and 6-8GB at high end, that's MORE than a whole lot of windows/Mac computers and ipad/iphones out there.

The latest mi6 test show that thing has 6GB and the OS alone ate away 1.9GB in beta stage alone… My current Mi5 has barely 500mb free at any one time and even cleaning everything gets me 1GB free, hence I really don't recommend phones to be future proof with less than 3GB Ram and 32GB storage to boot.

Asus and Lenovo can be consider tier 1 makers for their pc reputation, but their devices compete with other tier 1/2 makers therefore wont be cheap unless they are on fire sale. You can try your luck on one of those ebay 10-20 precent off sale to made prices of a 200 level device down to 160ish

Lenovo and Asus device as not well supported as Xiaomi Meizu alike where phone is their core business. Lenovo has famously dump nearly a dozen devices some only out for 10 months or so in their OS support list in china, which had them drop from 1st place in 2014/15 on volume sold to 6th place in 2016. Lenovo seem to think phones were PCs they would put out two dozen models in three different sub brands just in china overlapping in price and market segment, they paid for it big time too. I have not had a Asus device but they only recently went for non-Intel based chips, which i dont think they can optimize soon enough.

Again, I have tried enough chinese third tier device to learn their camera performance are worst than my iPhone 4! Hence I wont be touching those device if you really want to take pictures worth sharing

This UMI appears to be good GPS and desh cam, provided you don't caught by the cops using it :p

        • @jackau: I don't think you understand how Android works because you're pointlessly killing applications due to some fascination with having free RAM doing nothing.

Great now the application will take a long time to load again and it will use more battery to load it.

          @Diji1:

I know what i am doing, my point is to show the base ram used by the OS vs likes of Apple and Microsoft Windows, show how limited the third party app ram allowance be after base memory being taken over by first/second party apps.

For non power users, thanks to Androids unpoliced background app features and auto start up, there is a lot of activity from all sort of apps first party or not eating up memory. I have been given many old Galaxy, LG what not top of the line phones from relatives and mates to make them go faster, simply because apps eating up memory and androids appear slower than iphone and windows phone. Unless one can make sure essential apps are loaded not rubbish ad infused apps are… you will always need to KILL those and free up ram. Android is better for power users and I am coming from non-power user perspective in ram management.

Then again, if you are running fast SSD level storage access speeds, one needs no worry in closing the app or place them in buffer in the storage memory much like windows swap files than have them load in the memory itself. You will need to load stuff in ram more often is the device has slow EMMC type of hardware. Androids are coming up to overkill level in RAM. IS that a good solution?

I own windows and android dual boot tablets i tested Windows base performance between similar level CPU running EMMC storage vs pc with SATA 3 running SSD at the same ram config. The different is huge in real life performances. I guess Android gang saw more ram is a better way to make things seem faster.

        • @mholling:

If considering that price, probably better to get a Motorola moto z play:

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/product/motorola-moto-z-play

I got it for around $430 from DWI eBay when there was a 5% coupon.

Very good battery life. Is a step up from the (much cheaper) moto G4 Plus (it's replacement, the just released G5 Plus is similar in price to the Z Play at the moment).
          Comparison here:

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/294368

        • @mholling:

That actually looks really good and although over my budget, would be perfect for my wife.

@Click_It: a mobile phone is no substitute for a woman as wife

        • @altomic:

If only the wife had airplane mode…

        • @Click_It: and Band 28!

      • Actually I remember our $ higher than US I got A$1.04 to US$ when I changed years back.

        • quantitative Easing days, but by no means they have stopped, just doing it in secret.
it is all gonna come crashing down so these devices wont be cheap and most third tier will be belly up in no time…

  • Is 2nd Sim 3g….I'm in Philippines dropped my China phone in the sea it's fuc###. I was looking at the ASUS Zenfone GO ZB500KL only 5" 2/16gig $170 Del from Sydney but with warranty. Just found out 2nd Sim is 2g so useless soon. Might go for the ausus its 3g.

  • Beware that you may have GPS problems. I have the Umi plus. Good phone aside from the GPS. Very jumpy and inaccurate. Makes navigation painful. Google for Umi and the GPS problems, has happened with a number of models.
