Well, it won't be very quick with a 2.5" mechanical HDD in it. You'll need to add an SSD too.

    • +6

Usain Bolt doesn't have an SSD…

      • +5

        But he has Optus!

        • 0/hailcorporate/

    • +1

The price is good enough for the performance :)

  • +1

If the card fits in and will need SSD and POwer supply…..

    • +3

Should fit in, as it's LP, and system has 240W PSU, which with a 80W CPU and 75W GPU, should serve fine.

      • +1

        just…

        • What kind of reserve do you need for your power supply calculations? o.O

        • +3

          Just is enough

      • +3

According to NVIDIA, 1050ti has 300W Minimum System Power Requirement. Not sure how they calculated that.

        • +15

Need to leave some headroom for a USB hairdryer.

        • +1

Its generally recommend to aim for 50% power draw as that is the most efficient.

The Nvidia 1060 uses 138 watts in benchmarking

          https://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/msi_geforce_gtx_1060_a…

That would push the power draw to over 300 watts, hence recommended to use a 600 watt power supply

Replacing the PSU on this machine may be an issue also if it doesn't use standard connections

        • +3

          @rememberme:

O_o what sort of efficiency curves do you generally look at?

Normally the efficiency will peak at 50% load but that doesn't mean you need to double the PSU - generally the PC wont be running at 100% load 100% of the time. The efficiency does not drop off significantly beyond 50% load for most PSU's. If you are looking at 200W of load the 240W PSU would suffice IMO.

The efficiency curves are taken into account when building the PSU's - so a 240W PSU can supply 240W, but may draw more than this to do so (i.e. efficiency losses).

        • @klownz: I it is more the safety rather than power consumption I am worried about.

I didn’t think it was safe to go right up to the limit, but I guess you could even go a bit over if it's a well engineered unit.

        • +1

@rememberme: Efficiency doesn't matter much when you're buying twice as many watts as you need. All your efficient power savings are blown in the purchase price.

        • @rememberme: 1060 and 1050ti are way different, 1050ti doesn't go over 75w without oc.

        • High wattage CPUs. That's all I need to say.
They need to have high-wattage to cover their ass if someone blows their PSU.

        • +1

Don't see why it should be a problem, the sandy bridge equiv of these units operate just fine with the low profile GTX750 and GTX1050.

  • +17

I say forget what it upgrades into - if your mum needs a new pc, just get this. It won't be slow slow for several years.

  • Usefulness as a NAS? Wonder if it can fit many drives…

    • +7

No it's very limited internally. Two 2.5" SSDs or one 3.5" HDD. I have one myself and use it as a hackintosh with a low profile 750ti gfx card.

      • +1

        Appreciate the heads up!

        • +2

Just make sure you get the SFF (Small Form Factor) one instead of UFF (Ultra-Small Form Factor).
These look very sleek under a TV, much better than a Xbox One or PS4 Pro.

And with a SSD and a 750Ti it should run better than a PS4.
While a 1050Ti should put it ahead of the PS4 Pro.

….however these older gems are looking less desirable thanks to AMD's Ryzen 1600 !

        • @Kangal: I wouldn't jump aboard the Ryzen bandwagon so quickly, its single core speed is equivalent to this 3770, let alone trying to keep up with more modern intel chips.

Multiple cores look nice in benchmarks and graphs, but real world use is very different

          http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/AMD-Ryzen-7-1700-vs-Int…

        • +1
        • @bao28:
          Didn't know there was a Ryzen 5
          Cheers

        • @rememberme:

No problem, I think it's interesting to think they are going to do a Ryzen 3 aswell. Wonder if it's gonna be dual-cores or something… I think that markets well dominated by Intel already.

    • @iMagoo you'll be better off getting a HP ML10 V2 for about $200 - mid height tower case, has a drive bay for 4x SATA drives and another 2 can be fitted internally if you make some mounts yourself. I have one and I'm running xpenology on it and it works a treat.

  • this will work absolutely fine with ssd. if may like to buy a caddy for this :

    http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/desktop/f/3514/t…

or both sided sticky tape, worked fine for me.

    • +16

pfft ssd caddy, that's for rich people

Ozbargainers will do fine with that bit of 5 year old blu-tack sitting on your desk

      • +3

        both sided sticky tape :)

  • +59

Beware of these guys. I bought a refurbished laptop from them last year and did not get what I purchased.

Advertised: 256GB SSD, 16GB RAM, FHD screen, quadro 2000m.
Instead I received: 320GB HDD, 8GB RAM, 1366x768 screen, no discrete graphics card.

I returned it and got my refund with no hassles. A week after I got my refund, they put up the same laptop listing with all the original false specs. I messaged them about it and they blocked me with no reply.
This was just my experience but beware.

  • +9

Better off getting this Core2Duo deal posted for $200 the other day!
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/302910
    Now that was a bargain!

    • -2

      BARGAINS!

    • an i7 3770 or a Core 2 Duo? How can you even compare… this is miles better.

      • +4

        no way c2d is best

        • +5

          Pentium 4 was hotter!

        • @The Land of Smeg:
writing this on my amstrad 286

        • @tuzii: AMD XP

        • @tuzii:

Luxury! That's like 4mhz faster than my CGA beast, even with the turbo button on.

      • Whoosh!

        • Try writing it like it is a joke next time, because internet

  • +15

When purchasing old computers, be sure to run hardware diagnostics and burn-in right away as well as Hwinfo to see that the system is actually correct as per description.

Second hand computer sellers like to pull off some shonky moves once in a while.

    • and burn-in right away

you'd think it would have already been burnt in…

      • +1

        ?

      • +6

Yeah I think the point is the burn in will test if the unit is functioning correctly and can handle decent load.

For example if the PSU is close to failing the burn-in might blow the PSU. You'd rather that happen early when you can get an EBAY/PayPal refund or repair/replacement.

  • good find.
    Thanks OP.

  • almost exact specs (some were 4gb/8gb/16gb)as the ones my workplace upgraded from (government department)
as with any 2nd hand technology purchases, make sure you get what pay for (check system info or run one the thousands of live USB test app packages.
remember the internals are not welded in, plenty of cheap cases on ebay, Gumtree, verge collections etc

  • out of stock

    • These seem to be mainly Win 7.
Is is still possible to get the Win 10 upgrade to work for free?

      • +1

        Yep, have a looky here:
        https://goo.gl/gEST0h

      • +2

We can load any machine prior to shipment with Windows 10 for free if requested.

        • PM'd you about this for my order. Thanks.

        • sent a request via ebay to do this for my order also :-)

        • PM you about my order too, could you please upgrade my system to win 10 before shipment, Ta

    • I've been out of the IT industry for a number of years and haven't kept up with much, will any of these provide a significant upgrade to the refurb Optiplex 755 (with SSD & some old ATI gpu) I'm currently using? Will an old PCI Dvico TV card fit? It struggles to play HD content and run my DTV card.

      • +1

The Optiplexwill probably be a Core 2 Duo, an i5 an or i7 will be miles better, as well has having the ability to use a faster graphics card and more RAM.

    • Read further and answered my own question. All good.

      • The Dells, HP's and Lenovo's all have propitiatory motherboards so they will not fit in a ATX case. Only their designated factory sized case.

    • +1

The 990 is a bit old. No USB-3 for a start.

      • +1

$20 PCI-E card can fix that.. I installed a PCI-E USB 3.0 card in my HP N36L and it works fine.

        • If you're installing a low profile 1050 also, I'd be wary as they might not squeeze in together.

      • agree an issue. Edited
For less than $200 with discount, seemed like a deal enough to let other OzB's know

        • Not for the 990. Its worth spending a little extra for the 9010 - they are still so cheap.
Better graphics too on the newer Intel chip, if you are not adding discrete graphics.

        • @manic: Agree completely, but sadly out of stock. Hopefully they find some more!

  • +4

We should have more of the units in stock at our warehouse and will have quantity increased once confirmed.

Also have dropped the price on the HP equivalent if anyone missed out.

  • Is there a link to the 1050Ti mentioned in the OP?

    • Yep available, should have quantity increased on that shortly as well once orders have been picked this morning.

      • +1

Rep, please check the specs in that ebay listing (and all your others).

The CPU is an i5 in the specs and an i7 in the listing title, for starters.

        Which is it?

        • +3

i7 Mate, listing updated and we have 15 of the 8300 i7's remaining.

      • +1

Any more of Dell Optiplex 9010?
Thanks OP for the post. Good deals

  • Dell or HP?

    • +1

Which would be easier to gut for parts?

      • i dont have any experience with HP pc's but i know Dell is a bitch for some stuff. I out a dell motherboard in a deepcool case and had compatibility issues

  • These particular i5 and i7 CPUS alone are going for $150+ plus on ebay.

    • +2

Are you sure. This are 3rd gen processor which is 3-4 years old.

      • +2

Can confirm. Sold a 3rd gen processor for that much on ebay not long ago.

      • Absolutely

        http://www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_odkw=i7+3770+-3770k&_sop=…

        http://www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=i5+3570&_in…

(Probably because they are still perfectly good for even the most demanding games. The latest brand new $310 kaby lake i5 7600 is less than 20% faster than that i7 3770 in single-core performance, apparently).

      • Supply and demand. These i7s sell around $200, which is crazy.
        An i5 is much cheaper.

        • +1

Probably plenty of demand because they're a relatively low-hassle upgrade option for those with a lower-end Sandy/Ivy Bridge - no need for a new mobo, OS reinstall, etc. Upped my Sandy to an i7-3770 from eBay a year ago, and it's soon to pass its sixth year as my main system.

  • +1

Noticed MGS auctions in Adelaide have a few coming up next Friday 5th May.

Specs are the same but with 128GB SSD and 1GB Graphics Card. Plus a heap of Dell OptiPlex 9010 Core i5 processor ones as well.

    https://www.mgs.net.au/auction/preliminarylistingitem.html?a…

  • how long for the warranty anyone?

  • Saw it was out of stock, clicked deal again.. 2 more in stock. Well I insta buyed that and other one sold too. You can see in the purchase history 2 were just sold now.

    • ahh, so you were the other lucky one ;)

  • +3

Better off buying the Optiplex 9020.

    • +1

Nothing wrong with an older architecture. Especially considering that the i5 4570 model of the 9020 is $10 more than this.

  • I bought the Optiplex i5-4570 for $287 + 1050ti $200 = $487. I am now wondering if it was a good buy after seeing this for $823 brand new http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Intel-i5-7600K-4-2GHz-8GB-RAM-1TB…

    • +1

      you paid $487.
that system has a 7600k, but a H110 motherboard, so you can't overclock, as well as a cheap PSU and generic case.
I'd rather the small form factor than that. 7600k is newer and faster, but is it worth it for $300 more?

      • Due to the 240W PSU, I don't think you could OC for the Optilex either.

      • I don't need a fast CPU right now hence I bought an old refurbished i5. However, if I had a need to upgrade to a faster CPU in a year or two. It might not be wise to spend almost $500 now on a 4 year old PC.

    • +1

For $800, this one is far more powerful for gaming, http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/AMD-4-Core-Ryzen-5-1400-3-4GHz-8G…

    • +1

Mate I might put my hero cape on.

I don't think the 1050ti card will fit in the 9020 SFF due to it's heat sink and fan size. The PCIe slot is becide the PSU.

Would you like to double check this for us (as we do not sell the cards to confirm)

It's much easier to cancel an order before it is shipped.

  • Any difference between the 9010 and 7010 besides the 9010 being small form factor (SFF) and 7010 being desktop (DT)? Looking to pull trigger and adding the 1050ti for a budget Gaming PC.

Edit: Appears out of stock now.

    • +1

The 7010 supports up to 16gb of ram and the 9010 supports up to 32gb.
They both use the same chipset and chassis.

    • 7010 is mostly same thing, but sold with lower spec. Check the individual item configuration. May have older-gen cpu.
