Found a brochure to this in one of the community centers, Sounds like a good program for people to get a financial founding / basic education.

See details in the URL. Please do not Misuse, it's a community organisation, I haven't experienced it but from the brochure and link seems fairly straightforward, most attractive point being matched (free 500$ in savings)

  • TL;DR
    is this free $500?

    • Yes

    • UP TO $500.

      $500 is a potential maximum.

      The "FREE" part is subjective.
Pros: (1) some people may actually learn some budgeting/spending tips. (2) the dollar for dollar match
Cons: (1) Massive time commitment - attending fortnightly sessions. (2) Affordability of saving that much if income is tight. (3) the waiting period

Tempting, but having to attend financial workshops is kind of putting me off.

That's the basis of this deal from Brotherhood of St. Laurence etc - to teach you how to save. It's an education program for those without a saving history on welfare.

At the end of 10 months you have up to $1000 only to be spend on education (half your money, half as incentive to save).

    • Tempting, but having to attend financial workshops is kind of putting me off.

The workshops are free, If you are struggling for finances then I don't understand what's the problem in attending and learning something useful.

You must invest $50 per month for ten months, into the Saver account, which they will match. At the end of the ten months, you may purchase your education items & close the account.

Yes, it is a FREE $500!

The financial workshop was very good, imho. I'm very glad I went.

    FYI

    • you may purchase your education items

      like a new ipad ?

    • -1

Do you have to purchase something or can you just transfer the money out? I would much rather use that money to pay uni fees, public transport and so on.

      • +2

Again, you have to spend your $500max savings + incentive $500max from special account only on education expenses. You have to attend financial advice workshops to show you how to save.

It's a program by charities to help those on welfare build savings habits & better themselves through education. If that's not you, move on to deals for you.

Already noted in the description, why the neg….?

      • imo, not a bargain

        • -2

Your opinion is irrelevant and your neg is invalid, it's a bargain to me.

@nocure: Big bargain for me as well. Btw thank you OP.

        • Read the guidelines.

Negging is to raise issues with the deal.

This deal is in a moral grey area.

Bargain for those eligible, like the sort of people which might need to visit a bargain website to make ends meet

If you have those cards and think you will be spending money on an education related item, then it's a deal. Much like, not everyone may be interested in buying a brand new luxury car at 0% interest, if you are interested, then that offer may be a deal.

Absolutely agree. This isnt meant to be taken advantage of or OzBargained. Leave it to the people and families that actually need it so they dont miss out, insteading of getting it for the sake of it being free. At best, this should be in the forums as a public service announcement.

It cannot be taken advantage of easily anyway so I think it's fine to stay.

This deal falls into similar category and additionally it is quite hard to be exploited.

        • I think very little ozbargain users are entitled to it anyway.

        • @tuzii:
          How would you know?

        • @nocure:
with all the up votes on CC deals and Ebay deals, one can only assume.

        • @tuzii: Votes don't mean a lot. I upvote heaps and buy 1% of it.
