wow good price. i was really considering one of these around xmas time. was 600 then, and seemed like a good phone if you wanted to save a bit compared to a flagship. reviews said it basically felt as snappy as a flagship, even though the cpu was a bit slower. which contributed to its massive battery life, which seems like a pretty good trade off. its probably the better pick over the moto z for that reason, since you dont lose too much by not going for the high end

    • I also found it weird that they went with a 1080p display given than their previous generation of Style phones got 1440p

      • +9

Perhaps they finally understood what the meaning of mid-range is.

      • +3

There's 2 differnet Moto Z's here in Aus (Moto Z Force is US verizon only which doesn't apply here)

Moto Z - Flagship, thin and smaller battery with QHD screen.
Moto Z Play - mid range build, FHD screen with large battery but slower midrange SoC.

Everyone rates the Moto Z Play's battery as outstanding. I would definitely buy it had I not read the rumours of the Z Play 2 coming out soon. I'll wait until then and see whats new and worth it.

        • +3

The z2 play rumoured to have only a 2820mAh battery.

I've had a z Play since before Xmas, love it!
Dual SIM and dedicated memory card slot, 2day battery with stock android

        • @daft009: It's since been confirmed by the leakers to have a 3000mAh battery, but still a downgrade from the first.

      • I have the style, and think the only time 1440p makes any difference is in a VR headset, where you get half the screen per eye.

        • +2

same i have the style and can't say the 1440p is a big deal though it does have a 21mp camera which also isn't. a big deal.
it's all about software and the Z has android 7, great value phone and does all australian bands inc 28 and is australian stock and warranty.

        • I have compared my phone (the Moto Z Play) against equivalent 1080p IPS screens on other phones, and have to say that the IPS screens are definitely sharper when viewing small text, due to the OLED screen having a Pentile display. But in ordinary situations you probably won't notice it.

You can see the artifacting as a white corona around text and lines.

        • @drojf:
The X play Is 1440p IPS. Ridiculously sharp. But I'd happily trade it for 1080p oled.

      • its because they found the sweet spot, a snapdragon 625 can run a 1080p display (of moderate screen size) for days but would be stuttery on 1440p.
Motorola and "Blackberry" (complicated corporate situation) are leading the charge back to phones with 2 - 3 day battery life.

  • +3

Sd625 is new king of mid upper with superior batt life and can sustain performance much longer without heating. Due to small 14nm node for cpu and gpu

    • +2

for this price I would expect no lower than SD820, I bought a ZUK Z2 with SD820 for half this price for the wife and it too also don't have any overheating or excessive battery usage issues, and yet it benchmarks almost 3x better than this.

  • As the price. I would choose oppo r9s.

    • +1

the oppo r9s is still about $590 though also a nicely speced phone ( is it usb c like the moto?)

i think we are spoilt for choice in the mid range phones with australian stock and manufacturers seem to be running out of upgrades to make it compelling to upgrade in the segement ….. i wouldn't notice a faster cpu.

OS support seems to be the last innovation and how many android upgrades they will support before phone is end of support. that is an area it's hard to beat apple….. how many years the phones support OS upgrades before end of support.

      • +3

XDA to the rescue. This is why I only buy droids that have a solid backing on XDA for when an OEM decides my device is obsolete.

    • +1

Rr9 is fantastic, especially the camera, but aside from that, I have to give all my points to the Zplay. Z play is great, have longer lasting battery and have the fantastic moto mod that have a use or two (speaker adapter is my favourite).

  • +1

Is this dual sim? It does not mention on the ebay site.

    • +1

Yes, this is indeed interesting. Can anyone please confirm that this is the DUAL SIM?

    • I bought mine from the good guys ebay previously and pick up by the store. Yes it is dual sim. And you can still put in micro sd afterwards.

    • Yes it is, the Moto Z Play in Australia is dual sim; in fact the Moto Z Play can take two sims and a MicroSD.

The higher end Moto Z will only take dual sims; or one sim and one MicroSD.

  • +7

Harvey Norman price match. Use Amex deal $50 off $350 spend = $448

    • +1

They will likely not price match a coupon code price. Since this is a sale on eBay and requires a coupon code to get this price and also requires an active Paypal account too. And it's also a special event promotion discount by eBay. And this price is not available directly in store at TGG. Also it's not an advertised price.

"Trade, special event, club or membership offers, or prices not available to the general public"

      https://www.harveynorman.com.au/customer-service/price-match…

  • I have a grey-import XT1635-02 (Dual-sim with B28) and love it. Had it for about a month now.

I've got the 64GB model. Battery lasts 2 days before I recharge it. AOSP means it syncs very well with my AndroidWear watch.

Only downside is camera isn't the best but coming from a 3 year old phone it's still a massive upgrade.

  • "Looks like a good price for this, you could also get OW to price beat :)".

Coupon codes are an exclusion of the Officeworks price match policy.

    • I'm assuming the OP means that you either use OW PB or buy it direct with the 5% off (both being the same price)

  • The Asus Zenfone 3 (5.5" 4GB/64GB) is $379 with the coupon, might be a better choice for a lot of people. Very good phone.

    • Can you please confirm if this has NFC? Had a quick look and don't think it does. NFC = Android Pay

Sorry referring to the comment above - Asus Zenfone 3

      • No nfc for this one, only the deluxe has it.

Thoughts on this vs the new Moto G5+ (the 4/32 version from the Moto store) now that pricing difference is negligible? Differences that I can identify:

G5+: more RAM (4GB vs 3GB), possibly better camera (f/1.7 vs f/2.0), newer so possibly more updates?

Z Play: Super AMOLED screen, better battery, compass, type-C USB, access to moto mods

Z Play is also 5.5" vs 5.2" screen which may be pro or con depending on size preference. Deciding what to compromise on is annoying me with mid-range phones - plus the lack of an LED notification light on these motos is a feature that probably doesn't mean much to most but annoys me as well.

    • also interested in this comparison - the moto G5+ 4/32 can be had for $440 or so.

noting same chipset / cpu / gpu

G5+ has radio and is 5.2 inches

z has type c usb, higher res camera and is 5.5 inches

      • +2

Yeah I suppose it comes down to what is more important for an individual. I'm less interested in camera resolution but the f/1.7 aperture on the G5+ theoretically means it should do better in low light. Not sure about in practice though. Not really interested in the camera moto mod option for the play.

To me the Z play feels like a slightly better phone overall but camera, more RAM, and later release date have me considering the G5+.

Maybe I'll toss a coin, I don't know. Or wait to see if there's any end of financial year deals on phones.

        • very true - I need this week and am leaning toward the G5+ for the smaller physical size.

        • Motorola committed recently to have around 12 new moto mods out each year so I anticipate new Camera mods that are alternatives to the Hasselblad which is underwhelming except for its Zoom function.
if we believe Motorola/Lenovo then the phones compatible with the mods system will be made for another 3 year or so which makes the investment in any of the mods quite worth it.
If i can find a plan to buy the Play or Play 2 on Ill get one for myself and one for wife and grab a battery mod, speaker mod and a camera mod that beats that hasselblad one (i.e. has a better sensor than the phone itself in addition to having zoom)

    • +1

      Using a Zenfone 3 5.2".
      TL:dr:
Software is probably the deciding factor here. Basically Asus everything + kitchen sink vs Moto stock + practical benefits.

I find the Zenfone's photos to look a little noisy even under decent lighting. Camera is def not flagship grade despite the sensor (used Huawei P8 and Xiaomi Mi4 before). I'd imagine much to be the same for the Moto though.

Asus software bloat is quite annoying. There's a ton of preinstalled apps plus junk.
Zen UI is hit & miss for me. Tons of added features, some great and others just wanky. Lots of customisation options as per usual (I'm a fan of their motherboards).

  • Does "Fingerprint Sensor" mean fingerprint scanner?

  • Get Officeworks to price match with The Good Guys online (not ebay) is showing at $498.00 (they don't seem to have much stock though)

  • +6

This is a good phone to get if you're looking for a phone that has MASSIVE battery life and decent specs. I purchased this phone since the last time a deal was posted a few months ago, and here are my honest thoughts on the phone.

    Pros

    • Massive battery life. Heavy use + GPS on high accuracy would only kick the phone down to 50% for a whole day of use (my day is around 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.)
    • Quick charging. However, the phone gets quite hot while it charges.
    • Great display and specs for the price.
    • Moto mods <- keep in mind that they are relatively expensive. If you get the battery Moto mod attached on your phone, you can probably have your phone lasting over the whole full weekend without needing to charge again.

    Cons

    • The screen cracks easily. I mean, REALLY, REALLY easily. My phone slipped out of my pocket while I was sitting on my office chair, hit the floor, and made a massive hairline crack across the screen. GET A CASE WITH A FRONT LIP FOR THE PHONE ASAP when you bought the phone.
    • Fingerprint scanner is (profanity) rubbish. It gets the job done, but if you have ANY oil or dirt on the damn scanner, it won't detect your finger, and you have to unlock normally without the fingerprint scan.
    • Camera bump at the back. If you don't have a case, be ready for the lens to get scratched real fast.

    Conclusion

    • It's a good phone, well worth the price. However, it is relatively fragile, so you should get a case asap that has some sort of lip at the front (so if you drop it face-first, the screen won't be impacted first).
    • thanks for the write up - can you recommend a specific case?

      • +3

The case that I currently use and recommend is the Nillkin Super Frosted Shield Hard Case Cover. I bought it from eBay for $13.00, and it's pretty good. It has a slight lip at the front as well so you can place your phone screen down with no worries.

    • Hmmm…when I have been using the fingerprint scanner, it needs to be really oily or wet before it stops working. I can't say I get my scanner to have enough dirt on it to make it stop working. But it could just be I have really dry skin which makes it work better.

I am using this soft rubber case: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/381844371804?_trksid=p2057872.m27… mainly because with no case and with no back cover, it's so damn slippery.

I do like the proximity screen on feature, but it is super sensitive so will often light up because you re positioned your body if it is face up on the table. But you can turn that off if you don't like it.

Also agree about the battery life…since I'm not a power user I rarely drain the battery below 70%.

A grey import version of this with 64GB ROM is available at Lightinthebox: http://www.lightinthebox.com/moto-z-play-xt1635-03-5-5-andro…

In case anyone's wondering, there are 3 variants of this phone.

    XT1635-01 - Verizon (locked)
XT1635-02 - ROW (Rest Of World)
    XT1635-03 - Chinese variant

The 03 version comes with 64GB ROM however, its not released outside of China.

Refer, this XDA thread for more details: https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-z-play/help/xt1635-01-…

To save $16 not worth it.

      • Not for the $16… Its for the double internal memory 32GB (TGG) vs 64GB (LITB)

  • Does it run Lineage OS without typical quirks (camera, sound etc)?

  • Doesn't kogan have this for $439 usually? https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/motorola-moto-z-play-xt1635-32g…

  • Looking for a new phone for the missus. she currently has the S6, would this be a good upgrade?

EDIT: very basic user - whatsapp, FB, photos, general web browsing.

    • +2

I would think the S6 is the better phone as that was a flagship a few years ago. This wouldn't be much of an upgrade unless you're looking at battery life. But still for a lightuser this phone would be perfect and would suit all the needs fine. No one needs top specs for web browsing and whatsapp.

      • Her S6 is beat to death haha. Too bad this deal doesn't work on the white model.

      • +1

No one needs to spend $473 for web browsing and Whatsapp…

        • and photos though.

  • +1

Is this a worthy upgrade from s6

  • this one OR Moto X Force for $284.05 from DWI (import) ?

How did you get that price?

        $299 - 5% discount code (C5OZ)

        • Cheers
Was looking on their website rather than ebay…

        • @vinnycol: 10% off with WINTER10 if you were targeted for that promo … $269 shipped was impossible for me to pass up as an upgrade from my Nexus 4 whose battery calibration issues finally got old for me.
