I've bought this before and the quality is pretty sketchy and its wobbly AF. Cat doesn't care really though I guess.

    • each pole by themselves are a wobbly, but together in 3, they are a lots sturdier. Even for fat cats.
however these are for cats. Human stay off. Small dogs welcomed

All the top ledges are on a single pole, and those single poles are generally two poles joined through with a double-ended bolt/screw. The bolt goes into a plastic bracket that's basically hammered into a chipboard pole, and in a short time the hole the bracket's in gets widened and you start to get really bad rocking and shakiness.

I've got a big cat and she would (profanity) these up in no time. Ended up spending $400 to have one I designed made out of materials that would hold up better.

        Picture of tree

Picture of cat without ugly summer haircut

I'd had enough of bargains that won't last. This tree weighs about 60-70kg, with most of the weight in the base. It ain't going anywhere.

        • You are right. the top pole are not so sturdy.

My cats rarely spend time on them. mostly on the platforms

        • What did you use for the poles. I've been thinking about making something for the girls, but I couldn't work out what poles to use.

        • Beautiful cat and awesome cat palace you've set up there! :)

          @try2bhelpful:

The guy I went to is a carpenter, so I was expecting pine posts or something. After a while of experimenting he actually discovered the best way to go was with PVC pipes - they have snug-fitting male and female connections, are structurally-sound vertically, and make the whole thing easily detachable. It literally slides apart into pieces.

I just took this pic of the underside of a platform for you - you can see the end of a sisal run to where the pipe slots into the bracket. Some of them have square pieces of wood (like the back-left one in that pic) over the bracket as well, but I'm not sure how he determined which would need them.

The sisal is attached with glue with the ends secured through holes with knots inside, if I recall what he told me. He wrapped them by putting the pipe on a lathe and feeding the rope from the coil.

          @BuyoTheCat:

          Username checks out.

        • @dscott85: Thanks! :) She likes being up high. I think we could fit a few more cats on there, but she's too much of a prissy bitch for that.

Your Cat has more Sydney Real Estate than I'll ever be able to afford. :+)

        • @Pinchie:

your fat cat looks like my fat cat chewy.

Probably gets more p*ssy as well.

        • @Pinchie: Thanks for the info, that does sound like a good way to go. Your kitty is really pretty. We have two Somali cats, which are amazingly beautiful but also incredibly athletic. We have a 2 storey warehouse we converted so they run around on the beams and across the brickwork that supports them and up and down the stairs. We have also put in a runway shelf between our bookcases so they have extra running room. They love to sit on the windows above the outside sliding doors to the balcony so the cat tree provides access for one window and we have a ladder that provides the access to the other. They also have a cat door to the enclosed courtyard garden. Not that our cats are spoilt in any way :)

        • @try2bhelpful:

Wow Somali cats look beautiful. Ours is a pound kitty — and sure as hell not athletic — but she seems to have a fair bit of Norwegian Forest Cat in her.. if there's something to climb, she'll try it. That's why the tree is now the tallest thing in the house, and near a window so she can perch and watch the birds she's not allowed to go outside and chase. :)

        • @Pinchie: ours are going a bit stir crazy over winter. In summer they chase the flies around but no flies in winter. They have a bunch of feathered cat toys on sticks they carry around the house so we can play with them. You hear the tick of the stick as they bring one down the stairs. I love your cat tree - Cats really love to get up high so they can survey their kingdom. Sounds like your cat has a good life with a loving home.

        • @Pinchie: Do you mind putting up a picture of what the other end of the pipe looks like. We are trying to work out how this might attach to the bottom board, given there is probably fabric there as well. Thanks for your help here.

        • @try2bhelpful: I've taken a few pics of the pipe connectors, and also a couple of WIP pics I found in my email. Note that the bottoms of the platforms don't have material - they're painted black.

Naked tree - material/sisal/paint was added after each piece was completed
          Partially-dressed almost-complete tree

Hopefully the first pic gives a little more insight into the construction process. As for the pics I took today, they're of the two kinds of bottom joins, and some interiors of the pipe that's still bare in the second pic above. Note that this pipe isn't connected to a platform - just the arm that holds the food bowl. I couldn't confirm whether it's the same on the platform ones, but I don't think there's much room for variation.

Bottom join 1 - Looks like it's the rim of the PVC connector screwed into the wood at 90° intervals
Bottom join 2 - Looks like the connector (I assume the same rimmed type as above) is pinned between the platform and that additional square of wood, with them joined by screws.
Interior pipe/platform connection 1 - That's the pipe extension, with screws securing into the platform
Interior pipe/platform connection 2 - Same piece as above, connected into the pipe below
Exterior pipe/platform connection - Same piece, put back together to show connection
Bonus pic - Looks like the sisal's secured occasionally with a cable tie through to the inside

PVC pipe interior diameter was ~110mm, exterior diameter ~117mm. I'm not a plumber - I assume it's measured on the interior - so have both measurements. :)

The other thing worth mentioning is that the pipes go all the way through the base box to the bottom, where they slot into female connections secured in the base.

        • @try2bhelpful: I've just noticed in that first naked tree pic.. one of the securing connectors from bottom join 1 is sitting loose on top of a platform to the left. I guess that's what they look like. :)

        • @Pinchie: Thanks a lot for the post and the pictures; very helpful. Our cats were walking all over our cat tree whilst we were putting it together as well.

        • @Pinchie: That's awesome! I like the idea of using PVC pipes…. thanks.

  • My cats love their circle at the top but all of these are not proper circular beds so I am still on the hunt.

The trade off is the cat tree you want to own vs the cat tree you want to pay for. We bought a Bono Fido cat tree, which is excellent quality, but they are quite pricey. My concern with these cat trees is not only the stability of the build, but also the quality of the carpet. I wonder about the toxicity of the dye. With the stability I would presume you can make the stronger by drilling a couple of holes and adding your own support rods/bolts.

  • Shows up as $69.95 for me before coupon. I wonder if it's gone up, or if eBay can check location and price is updated to reflect that, to keep free postage.

Choose a different colour, not all are at this price.

        My bad :p

I should take off my tinfoil hat and try reading.

  • Too bad I don't own a giant cat.

  • you could always grab soemthing like this:
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Solid-Pine-Timber-Bunk-Bed-Frame-…

add a load of cheap rope, some carpet offcuts and a few mdf planks and turn it into a weekend project. It's been a plan of mine for ages but it seems like it might be overkill :-)

    "Enjoy FREE Australia-wide delivery!" but there's a delivery fee? I'm confused…..

    • +1

Send them a message. They will take the delivery fee off invoice.

  • Just built mine, little bit wobbly but decent. Getting those little poles in to fill the houses took a bit of effort. Other than that it was pretty straight forward. Cats already resting inside on the top floor.
