I got my set recently that ordered from clear's deal a couple of week ago and I am quite impressed with the quality of the practice/ transparent lock and tools.

    • +1

      Thanks for your support! Lizard.

The practice locks are pretty sloppy. They are a good illustration, but you can pick with with simple raking in a few seconds. I can pick both of mine in a few seconds or less, but it took me about 15 minutes to do my front door lock.

Just so you all know, while there are no laws preventing you from buying something like this it isn't something you want to carry around with you, or have in your car 'just in case'.

Each state has different legislation, but I know for a fact you can be charged just by having a lockpicking kit on your person at night 'without a lawful reason'. EDIT: In my state (QLD)

So just make sure you know the laws relevant to your situation.

    • +8

But then again, the same thing could be said about anything you were carrying around late at night, hammer, knife, chainsaw, pry/crowbar.

It would be better to post information about carrying lock picks and having lock picks in your own home.

      https://www.lockpicksaustralia.com.au/lock-picking/legality/

      • +1

I thought directing users to look specifically at their local laws would be more helpful than linking to a website that itself admits is not legal advice. Though it is a useful source, when you consider that particular website isn't even dated I would definitely recommend anyone using the source to double check with their state government website.

        • +1

There are a lot of links to each states legislation on that site. Most of them are at the top of the page in red. These are the most up to date laws as they are basically ripped direct from AustLII

And it isn't legal advice, because I don't think any of them are lawyers or are qualified to determine what is or isn't legal and they don't want to be held liable if someone got caught and said.. "but Lockpicks Aust. said it was legal…"

And here is another mass debate from a while ago that me and another guy go into great depths conversing about on the law of lock picks and house breaking implements.

lol @ carrying a Chainsaw at night

        • Try justifying why you have that in your bag at 3am 2 suburbs away from home… :D

        • @pegaxs: It's Ok if you put the balaclava in a different bag.

    • This may be a valid point but I'm curious what kind of activities you would be engaging in that would result in your car or your person being searched by law enforcement?

      • If it can be seen from outside of the car, at a routine breath test for instance, or seen on your person that can be grounds for a search. I was more posting to point out that these items shouldn't be used or stored carelessly, and that legality changes from state to state.

    • +1

Sure they don't bat an eyelid if you carry around a knife killing dogs, I doubt they'll care about a $12 set of lockpicks.

    • +2

For Victorians, you can keep it at home, but you cannot carry it anywhere else (if you do just don't get caught with it)

      CRIMES ACT 1958 - SECT 91

      1) A person shall be guilty of a summary offence if, when not at his place of abode, he has with him any article for use in the course of or in connexion with any burglary, theft or cheat.

      AND

      3) Where a person is charged with an offence under this section, proof that he had with him any article made or adapted for use in committing a burglary, theft or cheat shall be evidence that he had it with him for such use.

      • +4

Is it ok if you are a her as opposed to a him?

      • +3

Hopefully the postie won't get caught delivering them!

        • +4

Yeah because they're gonna send it in a transparent parcel

      • What if your place of abode is a motorhome?

      • My pick set isn't for burglary, it's for opening the practice lock.

    • +5

I am an international student and when I arrived to Melbourne a police officer (she was a guest speaker in the uni) told us we shouldn't hold a pen in our hands at night without a lawufl reason. It's been 2 years now and I'm still confused.

      • +2

Probably a police officer who did a year on the streets and has spent the last 20 working in the office. I can't comment about Vic legislation but in NSW, being armed with intent to commit an indictable offence is under the same section as possessing house breaking impliments (section 114). The issue is intent, but the onus is on the police to prove intent. So come back to the pen; it's not up to you to prove or give a lawful reason for holding a pen, it's up to the police to prove you intended to commit an indictable offence. If they get a call saying you threatened to stab someone in the neck with your pen and were moving in to attack, then yes it is a crime under s114. Generally though, no problems holding a pen.

        • -1

and try using that as a defence after you've been shot and killed because they thought it was a knife

      • +8

Is it because the pen is mightier then the sword?

    • Pretty sure if you're not a licensed locksmith and caught with this on your person you're pooched.

    • what about socks that i can fill rocks from nearby yard ?

  • +1

    Thanks

  • +5

Cool. This will go good onto my storage garage filled with many Picasso paintings, $1 billion dollars cash and 8 Supercars

  • +9

last time i locked this in the room i want to unlock. GG

    • I locked my set of desk drawers at work. It was locked for another week before I had 10 minutes to sit and unlock it.

      • ez, buy another set and wait from shipping that will arrive way after you dont need it anyway.

  • +5

Got these the last round! good quality but I found that the transparent lock was a little bit easy to pick!

    • +1

That's not your imagination, we stopped using these transparent padlocks after our first picking event because it gave beginners a false sense of ability and pressure compared to a normal spring.
      Happy picking!

      • +1

We? Do you run some sort of underground lockpicking school?

        • +1

I wish! - Nah, just a small group of friends with complimentary skill-sets that run lockpicking(and other penetration testing) for people at events (LAN's mainly atm) who are interested in learning or starting as a hobby but have never done anything like it before.

      • I was worried I was a natural, ha

        • +1

If you dedicate some real hours to it per week you'll probably end up surprising yourself and walking away with a very handy skill in quite a quick time. The learning curve isn't very linear, once you get confident on basic locks you pick the harder ones up faster and faster.

  • +19

These are perfect to help you get an even bigger bargain at any major retailer! 10/10 investment.

    • you mean to unlock a bigger bargain…

  • +1

got these last time and they are great.

now wanting to find something of nicer quality, any suggestions?

    • Yes, the rough edges on the picks make them grab a lot - very difficult to rake with. There are picks in the set which are designed for raking, but they snag too much.

  • +9

This is really the ultimate ozbargain isn't it, all these years this is where we were heading.

  • +2

    the ultimate Ozbargain deal
Why hunt for bargains, when you can just pick locks and steal stuff?

  • I'm still waiting for my set from the last deal. It never arrived. Tmart said they've dispatched a new set 2 weeks ago, still waiting for it.

    • +4

any chance it was picked by someone else?

      • ( ͡°Ĺ̯ ͡° )

    • I ordered two items from Tmart. Both never arrived. Both I had to wait ages for a refund, after they kept saying to wait for postage. They were very reluctant to issue refund.

  • +3

Why every time I go on ozbargain I end up with really cool shit that I just don't actually need….
    Its great

  • Is it just me or is the page not loading for anyone else, also is insecure?

    • While the site itself is insecure, their entire checkout process is done through secure.tmart.com and that is certed and setup for real-world SSL.

  • Got a set :P Thanks!

  • These things last you a life time and the return on investment was about 200 times in my first week of ownership!

  • +6

    Why am I buying this?

  • +2

Might be able to use this in conjunction with this deal:
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/314623

  • Got one! Cant wait to play with it soon :)

    Thanks OP.

  • got the $14 one. seems like great fun.

    • Not that it really matters but just so you know, the extra tools in the pack are essentially ones you would buy when you wernt just a beginner anymore (and needed to buy a new set that will last)

  • +4

You can get it for $10.53 here and here

    • Neither of those come with the transparent lock.

      • Um you buy them both together?

        • Apologies, was half asleep and only clicked the first.

        • @blighst:
Yeah no worries I can see how I wrote it makes it sound like the same item at 2 different places.

        • -6

@jdogg: Well 10% cheaper at these two stores so I've negged as no deal.

That said, they are great fun.

        • +2

@blighst: How you manage to get negs on your confirming that people can get this "deal" cheaper is beyond me.

        • +1

@kywst: Ozbargain has lost its root cause :/

  • so from the tas law: "having in his possession without lawful excuse any instrument for making an entry into a place to which this chapter applies"

My lawful excuse - just in case I lock myself out?

    • Is locking yourself out a "lawful" excuse or is being in a profession that requires it a "lawful" excuse. You can always check case precedent but I'd leave that to someone else.

    • Lawful excuse: it's to unlock this transparent practice lock.

      • Haha true that

        • Just stole my first transparent lambo. Unfortunately my mates couldn't see it.

  • +3

    What an absolute steal!

  • +3

This should improve my lockpicking skills in Skyrim

  • +9

If anyone's questioning the legalities of possessing picks, check out the PickPals guide here: https://www.pickpals.com.au/laws-lock-picking-australia/

    It has a state-by-state breakdown.

    • Don't know why you got a neg vote, as this is a good information book to read through and gives a great general idea about the legalities of pick set ownership… have an upvote on me.

    • +3

Thanks! We spent a year and $$ putting this together for the lock picking community. Great to hear it's useful :)

  • +1

    Well picked!

  • +2

I bought one from the last deal. Picked out one pick and opened the thing in less than 10 seconds. I let my bro and cousin have a try and they struggled. Funny to watch. They gave up eventually.

  • I'm locked in so I don't get locked out.

  • Are there any better picks out there.
Heard the pros use mechanical ones

    • +3

Better picks? These are the equivalent to a pick set from the $2 shop for any hobbyist.

There definitely are rofl, The "Pros" usually prefer everything manual not mechanic - Mechanic stuff is for bruteforcing. [This]
(https://www.lockpicksaustralia.com.au/product/southord-eight…) should last you from beginner to moderate, very well known brand and great quality, if you were wanting to get serious then a kit a few steps higher could be suggested so that you have much more variety of tools to learn for different situations.

Let me know if you need me to expand on anything.

      • +4

+1 for southord. I use them, sparrows and petersons.

Like I usually say, these $15 kits are ok as starter kits on plastic locks, but once you start doing challenge locks and picking security locks, you want better quality tools…

And the "mechanical" tool I think he is talking about is pick guns and as a locksmith, I never really used them. I prefer bump keys or a rake pick over pick guns.

    • Locksmiths will often just use bumpguns. Like anything, the people who do it for a living will use the quickest/easiest tool that works. If it doesn't work then they might go manual.

  • Anyone used tmart before? Considering buying, Never seen a 'smart' charger with 9.2A output for so cheap http://www.tmart.com/Universal-8-Ports-LED-Screen-Display-US…

    • +1

Lol @ totally off topic post. :D

My only advice: you get what you pay for?

      • +1

        That's my worry :P

..and the reason I asked here is because I'd never seen the site used in this deal, not too offtopic in terms of OZB!

  • +1

I got one from tmart last time. Arrived fine in Canberra. Lock picking tools are good. I've never picked a lock before and after a 5min yt video, I picked this one. I don't think it's because of skill, is just a very easy lock to pick. You can almost use a flat tool and just rummage around for 10secs and it will pop.

  • +2

got a set last time these had a deal, now i'm paranoid because how easily i picked the doors to my house, t-t-thanks t-mart

    • To anyone else thinking of picking the door to their house it's not recommended to pick a lock you rely on as it is easy to damage. Better off buying extra locks online to play around with

  • This will either get you out trouble or put you in trouble.

  • Thanks!

    Bought one for fun!

  • These help take your Ozbargain to the next level with 100% discounts.

    • pretty cool though seeing the inside of a lock in action via the ebay links
  • Locked my self out of the house the other day. My lock pick set was in the house! DOH!

  • can you pick door locks with these?

  • I have this from the last deal, the padlock it self is really really ammature level but aside from that good set for the price

  • Saw a 3OFF code for 3% saving. Didn't try
