[INVALID Deal] Re: GelaSkins

13520

MONDAY 7 AM UPDATE

Gelskins have verified that they will not ship these orders. They are offering a 10% discount to those who are interested use OZBARGAIN

As we indicated the "deal" was suss but there was a great divide in opinions here.

With so much positive votes this deal got a life of its own. The Mods will now discuss this type of situation so that we can learn from this in the future.

Unfortunately we are not always here 24hrs and we too have a life and we too have a "democracy" in that we need to discuss and come to joint agreements, so those criticising us for not killing the deal, need to understand this. As seen in this thread there are arguments for and against etc…

We did our best to warn people given the circumstances.
THREAD LOCKED and link removed (it will just come back to this post) but not deleted so you can read the unfolding story…. Discuss in the Forums if you wish

Step 1
Visit http://exclusive.rogersthankyou.com/ and click "Enter" to enter the site and begin the process of getting a code.

Step 2
Wait for the site to load and click the "Open your gift now" button, then click continue.

Step 3
Tick the third box only (high speed internet), clicking any of the other boxes will not allow this tutorial to work, then click continue.

Step 4
Enter a random first/last name combination, for postal code enter; M5S 2H7, tick the two agreement boxes, enter a real email address (this is where the code will be sent to) and for the phone number use: 415 XXX XXXX (X being substituted with random digits), then click continue.

Step 5
Wait for the envlopes to load and click any of them. (They are irrelevant to the process of getting the code).

Step 6
Click "Open It!" to open the envelope and allow you to select a prize. The GelaSkin radio button is radio button number 4, so we click that one. (Rest of the prizes except for the donation require a real registered Rogers Canadian address).

Step 7
Click "Submit" and the code will be then sent to your email address instantly. (Sometimes it may take 2-3 minutes but don't worry, they will come).

Step 8
Visit http://www.gelaskins.com/rogers to input the code you received in your email and follow the on screen instructions.

Step 9
Enjoy your free skin with free shipping worldwide. You will then get your skin within 3-4 weeks, but usually earlier.

Thank You Rogers.

"Open to residents of Canada, 16 years and older, who are existing Rogers customers and who received the invite to the special gift offer & contest"

While orders maybe accepted by the system, when it comes to be posted and Rogers has to pay for international shipping, dont be surprised if they dont ship. (fyi only costs $1 more for shipping to Australia, rather then Canada)

If anyone "complains" about not getting this - we'll think of some appropriate penalty - how about skinning alive LOL

The poster implies they have got theirs but when you look at mac rumours site its only just been posted on the site and Mac rumours is a US site - Canad to US is a lot different in cost than Canada to Australia.

I bet you'll still be looking at the deals. They all come back.

    • +2

Yes please put us .. I mean him/her out of his/her misery lol.

    • why comment?
its been addressed above and nothing has happened, just a pointless neg.

    • +1

i dont think this bargain needs to BAN the OP. its not even a mistake. we could simply just read the T&C's…

      • +6

Precisely! A resource has been made available, we're all grown-ups here, we can make our own ethical, legal and financial decision as to whether or not we decide to pursue it!

We certainly don't need the self-righteous brigade anonymously telling us right from wrong!!! As you so rightly point out earlier, many of the same moral crusaders here, were probably rubbing their greedy little hands together with glee over the Paypal/Dealsdirect faux pas!

Similarly, nor would anyone whinge if they decided not to honour the deal; hell, you've gotta be in it to win it! ;)

    • +1

xuqi is right. It's a shame that the Mods haven't acted upon anything, this is nothing short of a con job. We're OzBargainers, not OzScammers.

      • You're not one, but you can't speak for the rest of us. You do not represent anyone but yourself.

  • i can't believe some of the people voting negative on here, You are basically given a $15 giftcard for an independent website which is gelaskins, take it or leave it, it's very simple really

  • +3

Not a bargain - waste of time

    • +5

      hehehe it's gone wildfire:

      ref: http://forums.redflagdeals.com/existing-rogers-customers-fre…

      Quote from 1 user:

I did a quick google search for www.gelaskins.com/rogers and this "hot deal" (as people are referring to it) is being posted EVERYWHERE. All over the world from the UK, to the US to Singapore. I see tons of sites with people signing up. I even read one page where some guy was selling 2000 codes for $$$.

BTW, if anyone is interested in more canadian deals go to: www.redflagdeals.com instead of australian bargains :)

      • +1

LOL! I am really interested to know how Rogers is going to handle this situation. Gelaskins will be elated to see the sudden spike in sales when they go to work on Mon.

      • awesome neg mate. its the 21st century im sure all of us expect this to happen.

  • +4

Ozbargain = bargains for australians. This deal only applies to Canadian residents who are existing Rogers customers…I am neither.

  • +10

lol pretty funny comments. seems like it's okay when Woman's Day magazine (Australian company) releases a unique coupon/invite only for people who buy their magazine to get a free prize, and then someone releases that coupon code on OzB and it becomes the most popular deal on here.

but when it comes to a canadian company, all this ethics and justice (and emotions) comes into play about how it's only for those who got the invite or who is a Rogers customer etc. lol..

    • +4

so true brother, it seems to me that all the negs are given by people who dont have the faith that it will work.
ive order around 4 different designs via this. if i dont get that woopy do, ill buy them.
if i do ill be the one laughing at the people who didnt enter it while there was a loophole.

      • +2

Haha. HMMMMMM… Should I revoke my neg and try my luck too? (:

      • +1

its because of your kind that makes pretty world looks soo sad…

        • His kind is sharing with the community, good or bad, is that what makes the "pretty world" look sad?

        • I can't even tell who jasecs is talking to, since jasecs might've been replying to polkadots610, tuzii or cripto

Imagine if jasecs had been replying to cripto and was saddened to see that there was no fury over Woman's Day but there was fury for this company we don't even know … :)

          -> jasecs
I'm not actually asking for you to respond … I'm just trying to lighten the mood here

          • @SomeGuyOnOzB: He's responding to tuzii, you can tell with the allignment of his default profile picture.

            • @cwongtech: Nah, jasecs is dirty with Cripto coz s/he realised s/he missed out on a Woman's Day bargain! ;)

              Who wouldn't be? :o

            • @cwongtech: Lol the mod knows the alignment tells which person the comment is in a response to, but some people have replied to the wrong person unintentionally. It's just that jasec's comment could of been a reply to either polkadots610, tuzii or cripto because of the way he phrased it. I too think he is replying to tuzii or he would have pos the deal.

    • +4

Agreed mate, this is comedy gold!

I think all the neggers are just frightened Brendan Fraser's gonna come to their house at the behest of the company and give them a lesson aboot "Rogering"! :p

    • Damn you're bloody right..

    • +2

      haha, you read woman's day!!!

  • +2

lol I can see the rogers team having an emergency meeting right now. oh wait its still sunday there.

    • +3

I can almost hear it now…Monday morning, Rogers headquarters, Canada City, Canada Province, Canada…erm, country? :p

      Boardroom rabble: rhubarb,rhubarb,rhubarb,rhubarb,rhubarb,rhubarb!
CEO: Ookey, woots thus ool aboot, pal?
Chairman: He's not your pal, buddy!
VP: He's not your buddy, guy!
Minutes taker: He's not your guy, friend!

  • I've been trying to work this out … what will happen or is going on … :P

Anyone think the following might happen?

    1. Gelaskins will tell Rogers about all the orders it's been asked to process, for non Canadian addresses -> orders get cancelled.

    2. Promo for Rogers - who won't benefit in much business from Australians

    3. Gelaskins may be in higher demand among people who saw this deal and now want one ….

In the end perhaps just giving Gelaskins some free publicity?

    • +1

Or Gelaskins will just process the orders & invoice Rogers for the promo codes generated from their website; putting the onus of veracity back on Rogers themselves! Depends on how much money is involved! :p

Either way, yeah; Gelaskins wins! ;)

My main concern is the quality of this site.

OzBargain relies on the good faith of businesses to offer discounts and special offers to us, and many businesses directly post such bargains on here themselves. It sets a poor precedent for OzBargain to start promoting the exploitation of loopholes in such offers.

Businesses would be rightfully weary of offering bargains to this community if they feared that some simple oversight in their web form might lead to thousands of OzBargainers ruthlessly exploiting a loophole contrary to the terms and spirit of their offer. The quality of the bargains posted here would be adversely affected as a result.

To me, what defines a bargain is that the transaction is conducted in good faith by both parties, and that both parties are happy when the transaction is over. That means the business not being deceptive, and the buyer adhering to the bargain's terms and conditions. Exploiting a loophole isn't a bargain in my books.

    • +4

Read the T&C's of most online traders dude, they usually reserve the right to not honour erroneous transactions! Some do, to foster goodwill; others do not, as we all know very Dell, er I mean well! ;)

You're thinking way too much about this mate, take a chill pill, time for beddie-byes anyway; don't stress

mod - it reads nicer if I finish it there :)

      StewBalls - It wasn't un-friendly, I'm sure jump22 would've laughed too! ;)

      • I'm kinda confused what's happening here, but I did take StewBalls' comment in good spirits. For the record, my usual bed time is 3:30AM… still half an hour to go. :P

    • contrary to your attempt to define this site, the [top deal](http://www.ozbargain.com.au/stats "OzBargain Official Statistics") on here (460+,0-) with 20,000 guest clicks seems to be what the OzB community loves.

i don't think such deals will affect the quality of bargains. there's only a few major reps on here that offer us some decent bargains and exclusive discounts anyway (eg. QQQ from COTD), otherwise it's primarily the community finding bargains and posting on here for the rest of us.

      • Isn't it just, you know, "the vibe of the thing"! ;)

      • Woo cool this will get in there!
Hey where's my m950 post in there ???

      • +1

I wasn't defining this site at all, and I took care to say "to me" and "in my books" when I said what I thought was a bargain; I wouldn't dare to define this site because the community as a whole has always determined what a bargain is.

I also have absolutely no issue with the Woman's Day mug bargain you link to, and I see it as a different kettle of fish to this GelaSkins offer. The Woman's Day promotion never says you need to buy an issue of the magazine to claim the mug, only vaguely that you need to be a "reader": http://promo.snapfish.com.au/WDMugConditions/womansday_condi…

OzBargain users could also chose to go buy the magazine if their personal ethics determined that the offer came with the obligation of buying an issue. They have that choice since the promotion is clearly targeting Australian residents. (For the record, I never voted on or redeemed that offer.)

This GelaSkins offer is much more specific in it's terms and conditions that you A) be a Canadian resident and B) be an existing Rogers customer and C) received the offer invite. What's more, tuzii's post details specific instructions on how to lie about your eligibility.

        • +2

your sentence started off with "OzBargain relies on …", then at the end you're just talking about bargains and exploiting loopholes (in your perspective). seemed like it to me anyway.

how to be a "reader" without buying the magazine?

maybe you're not familiar with woman's day magazines (i don't blame you lol) but their promotions are written inside the magazine once purchased. it lists a website inside or sometimes a coupon code specifically for readers who have purchased the magazine; to claim prizes and/or discounts.

so in theory, the only way to know the link is to purchase the magazine and become a "reader", from there terms and conditions apply to the "readers", maybe that's why you see the terms and conditions as vague because you weren't aware they were aimed at "readers" and not the public.

  • i wouldnt pursue this from an ethical view, but OP hasnt broken any posting guidelines, although to me, this should be a forum topic

  • just to add something into the mix.

From my invoice, i dont think that gelaskins can cancel orders due to the fact that the invoice states payed by "Paid with gift card:" somewhere in the middle. So they cant really tell if it was paid with a gift certificate (which they sell) or our coupon…

its really skeptical here…just wait 1 month to find out :P
    cant wait.

  • -1

Did anyone read the first line of the Rogers T&C's??
    It states "NO PURCHASE NECESSARY"
To me that says you don't need to be a customer of theirs to get the offer, but I'm not sure how people can understand purchase.
As paying for a service Rogers supplies constitutes as a purchase.
So to me this offer is for anyone you don't necessary need to be a customer purchasing a service from Rogers!

    • why does your title say that you "must be canadian" then? if its for everyone

      • -1

        I've said this before
As some of the prizes are mag/newspaper subscriptions And you need to live in Canada to get them delivered, as gelaskins is a 3rd party site you can use any address you like.

        • what does a 3rd party site have to do with being canadian?

    • +1

No purchase necessary but it does state the promotion is open to residents of Canada who are existing Rogers customers who received the invite.

    • It's late, we should probably be asleep.

Tuzii is quoting from T&C point 1 only.

      Point 2 though says

ELIGIBILITY: Residents of Canada who are 16 years of age or older, who are an existing “Rogers customer” in good standing before and up until the start of the Contest on on September 1, 2010 and who received a personal invitation to participate in the Contest either by text message, email or direct mail can participate in the Contest (herein referred to as “entrant(s)”). )”). For clarity, Rogers customers are customers who use or subscribe to products and/or services of Rogers.

and that's why we added the Canadian only and that you must have your invitation.

If you work your way through, it actually says on one page they want the info to help them verify elligibility

"+" this comment if you hate tuzii for making such a hilarious post, keeping us all up laughing when we should be in bed for early Mondayitis therapy! :p

I'm going to bed now, 3 hours sleep, I'm gonna be a wreck later today! Rest assured though, I'll get you tuzii, and your little dog too! Eeheeheeeheeehee!!! ;)

I'll plus that just for the lols

For those who are wondering why the mods have left this published:

    1) While I personally do not condone dishonesty and it's something I wouldn't apply for, the deal is popular (from the votes it has attracted) and we do have some genuine members here that may be eligible for the deal.
    2) It's not a fraud/crime/illegal. It's a loophole in the system and Rogers/GelaSkins have every right to (and most likely will) cancel/dishonour the deal as they are covered by their own T&Cs anyway.
    3) It's no different to other 'loophole' deals posted previously such as dominos, dealsdirect, etc. Far too often, we've seen deals with comments such as 'create another account to apply as a new customer', 'applied 3x', etc which breaches the respective T&Cs of the various companies. However as long as they don't breach our guidelines, the mods generally do not unpublish these (we're not ethics police), but they're generally frowned upon by most members.
    4) The mods have added the applicable eligibility criteria & T&C to the description. The rest is up to the individual members to make their own choices.

The personal attacks on this thread are also getting a bit out of hand. While you're free to express your own opinion and discuss the deal, please refrain making any personal attack remarks or you will be banned.

    Hi Everyone,

First off, I'd like to thank you all for your interest in GelaSkins - as a smallish company (30 people or so), it's great to see so many of you getting excited about our products. Australia has been a great market for us since we started 5 years ago… thanks for being so supportive!

Unfortunately, while we'd love to be able to honour all of your free skins, the deal does clearly state that in order to be eligible, you need to be living in Canada and a customer of Rogers. So, we're going to do our best to figure out which orders are legitimate and cancel the rest.

For your trouble, here's a discount code for 10% that's valid until Sept 26th at www.gelaskins.com OZBARGAINS

Again, really sorry to disappoint, but we really can't ship out any orders that we potentially might not get compensated for!

    All the best,

    Jamie

    Co-Honcho at GelaSkins

    • hey mate,

tested out the discount code. the code you gave doesn't work. should be OZBARGAIN instead of OZBARGAINS.

      cheers

      • Right you are! I made them both active now.

        Thanks for letting me know.

        Jamie

        • Jamie.

I am locking this thread. Thank you for clearing this up. I do suggest you come along and post your deal separately as not everyone will look at this after we mod this deal more.
