Lilydale Free Range Roast Chicken $10 @ Coles (was $13)

120

Just spotted at the local Coles. Down from $13

Looks like not even the hardcore vegans from tumblr were buying free range chooks when they were $13 a pop compared to $8 for regular cruelty chickens.

Maybe more people will start buying them again now that the price has been adjusted to reflect the price of the regular alternative.

I bought one and and now that my conscience is clear I can save money and buy normal chickens again.

I am not vegan but I don't think it would be an unfair assumption that a vegan might be m ore likely to purchase this chicken if it is at a chaeper price

Bro, vegans don't eat animal products of any kind, not even dairy.

        • vegans don't eat animal products of any kind

that's what they want you to think…

        • @jv: what I wanna know is how he expects a vegan to buy it after he's already bought it..? not many people vegan or otherwise who'd be up for a second-hand chicken

        • Chicken isn't vegan??

I think you did a better job as minister for women than you are now as minister for vegans.

        • I read that as almost the same thing (typo in my brain!)

Five dollars for buying an indulgence from the rspca - the birds having their throats slit thank you.

The girl at the deli assured me that the birds in their store died peacefully…

    • My understanding is they're electrocuted (head clamp), and then bled via a neck wound.
Not the best way to die, but far from the worst.

      • How very humane.

Not sure if poster is just mocking our former PM's ignorance, or matching it, but regular chickens are not "cruelty chickens".
Battery hens are for eggs, not meat. There is no practical difference between free-range meat chicks and regular ones. The label has no meaning in Australia.

    • You are incorrect.

The difference is Lilydale adhere to these Freerange standards for Chicken Meat:
      http://www.frepa.com.au/standards/meat-standards/

These are the rspca approved chicken meat standards

Unfortunately, chickens can't read, and the barns for both look the same. "access" to outdoors is often a bit theoretical.

My point though is that talk of chicken cruelty makes people think of cages.
A lot of people wrongly believe that regular roast chickens come from caged birds.

        • No, your point was "there is no practical difference between free-range and regular" as you write above.

My reply was that is incorrect and the choice article you reference validates my assertion.

FTA: "That's why it's important to choose certified free-range products"

    • As you'll discover, the whole "free range" marketing thing works a treat on their target market ("I'll pay more just to feel better, reality be damned!"), and the "organic" sellers don't care if you see through it. It's like Apple marketing, if you don't drink the koolaide, they don't care what you think.

      • Absolute rubbish.

  • how many Kilos for $10

    • Hey, show some respect.
      There'll be no fat-shaming here.

  • Are they seasoned? I didn't buy one because it looked like there was no seasoning on these Free range ones

    • Not as seasoned as the regular cruelty cooks. Didn't have the stuffing. Prefer cruel chooks as they have a bit more flavour but this might be healthier.
