Can this be turned on and off with a remote of some sort.
Want to hide it behind my TV and not have to press power button each time.
If not does anyone know of a Windows based box I can that I can turn on and off with a remote.

    • It's got an IR port which needs line of sight. Alternatively you can use a Wireless or bluetooth app/remote/keyboard. All these can be programmed to wake the NUC from sleep.

    • I believe you're looking for the 'Wake on LAN' feature. All types of computers should have it in the BIOS these days though some will only wake from Sleep mode rather than off like they used to. I'm fairly confident these NUC's have them as i don't think there would really be anything produced without them these days. My desktop motherboard has wake on USB as optional feature but I can't comment on the NUC's having it. A google search indicates they do which is a great feature if you use a wireless mouse/keyboard with it :)

    • I got one of these setup as a Kodi/Windows (Dual boot) dedicated media centre. I use logitech universal remote to power on/off the unit. As "@LoungeLizard" explained it needs to be line-of-sight to be able to control using a remote.

If you want to wake-on-lan, as far as I know, you need to connect the machine to network using cable (not wifi).

This is a pretty good unit. It can play HEVC (H.265) videos with no issues.

    • Xbox ? Windows based and can be turn on by controller.

    • You can add a cec hdmi for hdmi power on if you can't see the ir. I mount one behind sons tv out of sight and the ir signal still bounces enough to control it

I think overall the latest model (NUC7i3BNH) is a better option, even at $100 more. USB-C connectivity alone is a big plus, not to mention much better GPU, HDMI 2.0, and (slightly) faster processor

      • The NUC7i3BNH only has USB 3.1 10Gbps and Displayport on the USB-C connector. The NUC7i5BNH and NUC7i7BNH have Thunderbolt 3.

  • It's hard to justify the price of nucs when you can get a laptop all ready to go that will blow it out of the water for not too much more. or alternatively get a cs325 compute stick.

So you're going to use the laptop as a HTPC?

      apples and oranges mate…

      • For HTPC these days, you are better off with a sub-$100 ARM device.

My NUC is the fileserver for a couple of "HTPC"-replacement front-ends.

      • or alternatively get a cs325 compute stick.

    • How are you going to use a laptop as a hidden htpc?

      • or alternatively get a cs325 compute stick.

  • Spend the extra and get the i5.. Love my NUC with 16gig ram

  • Very tempting but I got kodi to work on new Sony 7500d so saves needing another one
