good morning and good deal, bought one from last sales

Nothing like a discounted MacBook purchase and a strong coffee to start the day right :)

  • Finished.

God damn it, I knew the early bird gets the worm!

    • +28

Here the early worm gets the Apple :)

  • +2

So annoyed that I missed this. Hopefully JB have at least a 10% discount coming up soon, but I'd much rather save $600 on getting a slightly older model.

    • +1

The deals are thick and fast now. It's the only way to dribble the stock out before the new ones come, such a shame they had to unburden their nice new models with so many missing features and no 'expansibility'

    • +1

      Yay got it this time.

I actually returned my 2016 one I bought from ebay myer. The lack of USB ports is ridiculous. This is probably one of them lol.

    • It is, USB-C is great but its annoying having to use adapters for everything.

  • Is that really the real reason behind the return? 🤑

  • +2

Looks like it's back with a new link if you are quick, probably will only last a few hours.

  • Is the 2017 out yet ?
I'm after a MacBook Pro for my daughters schooling next year.
    Any major differences ?

    • Other than the CPU change from Skylake to Kaby Lake there aren't any other major differences. Performance is apparently 20% greater, though the gain is rather negligible considering it's only for school use in your case.

      • Thanks for that.
Pro much better than the Air ?

        • Pretty much, the Pro is better in every way, and its only 20 grams heavier. I'd say it's worth the extra coin, considering how outdated the Air is.

        • @Halsmich:

Agree. The MBA is purely a budget purchase these days for people who cannot stretch to the MBP.

        • Air's screen is terrible compared to these, but if you can get them cheap (around the $1000 mark) they'd be perfect for school use.

    • Unless your daughter will be using it heavily for film/photo editing, she will see no difference between the 2015-2017 models tbh.

  • Weirdest thing happened, I applied the CMYER code in checkout, it took me to Paypal and showed up the subtotal as $1919.20; however, when I got my receipt from Paypal it said that it charged me the full $2399. WTF?? Does anyone know why the hell this might have happened?

    • I think I've seen that happen before and people on ended up getting charged the discounted rate, if it showed on eBay as 1919 then you'll be cool :)

      • I hope so, on my Paypal receipt it still says $2399. I sent Myer a message so hopefully it's just an error.

        • +2

I have seen some people use this in their favor in terms of salary sacrifice, tax deductions, TRS etc.

          Just sayin

        • check your paypal receipt, it will mention the discount.

Or check where the money came from, and it should be the lower price

So a 2017 macbook pro without touch bar is cheaper than a 2016 with touch bar?

    • that whats i'm wondering… all the ebay sales have been on 2016 models i think
how much boost will 3.3ghz base clock speed give tho vs the base model 256gb 2017 non TB?

      • +2

The 2017 base model is faster CPU and graphics than the 2016 with touch bar… If you don't need touch I can't see why one would buy the old one (the high end i5 from the 2016 is slower than the low end i5 on the 2017)

        • +1

Exactly. The 2017 base model (no touch bar) for $1899 is a great deal…and that is RRP! Throw in the regular 10% off Apple sales and you're cooking with gas :)

        • Just clarifying. Base 2017 mbp is a 2.3ghz processor. Would that still be faster than the 2016 3.3ghz processor?

Is there some benchmarks your saw regarding this?

This is a genuine question to help my decision :)

        • +1

@MrMaxwell: I managed to get 15% off at JB by mentioning that entertainment book had 5% off JB gift cards (during a 10% off sale) and that I couldn't be bothered going through the rigmarole to get the gift cards.

He applied a flat 15% discount to the RRP at the time.

        • @MrMaxwell: but that only has 128GB HDD which is too small.

        • @iggs:

https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i7-6567U… (high end 2016 CPU gets 5600 in benchmark)

https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i5-7360U… ("low end" 2017 CPU gets over 6000 in benchmark)

        • +1

@MrMaxwell: 2017 model @ $1899 - That only has 128GB storage. I would rather get the slightly slower but more storage 2016 model

        • @KitchenSink:

          Thanks that's helpful!

        • @KitchenSink:

Looking at RRP the non touch 2017 256gb is cheaper than the touch 2016 though by $200

        • @Gbickle:
huh? Are you sure you're looking at the prices correctly?
The non touch 2017 model RRP is $2199 - [email protected] 256GB, 8GB RAM, 2 thunderbolt ports
The cheaper version of it is $1899 with same specs but only 128GB storage. <— only this model is cheaper, but you lose half the storage and ports compared to below

The model here that OP posted is a 2016 model touch bar which is going for $1919.20 - [email protected], 256GB, 8GB RAM, 4 thunderbolt ports (but 2 on the right side have reduced PCIe bandwidth apparently) + novelty touch bar

I know the differences between architectures and clock speeds, but I think the 2016 model is the better buy for what you get

        • @KitchenSink:

Im purely comparing RRP $2199 vs $2399 …

        • @Gbickle: oh, fair enough

        • @KitchenSink: I was really undecided as I wanted to get 16gb of RAM. however, custom order macs will never go on sale, unless refurbished.

still undecided this 2016 model with touchbar vs 2017 base model without. (i know sale is over, but if it perchance comes back on sale)..

  • Any chance for 15 inch pro?

    • The price sky-rockets for the 15" model, but I'd rather a larger screen as well.

  • Argh, my heart loves the idea of this laptop. But my head can't justify buying a Mac with a dual core processor and 8GB of RAM :/

    • +2

I'm not being biased but the main reason why I love macs so much are because they last so damn long. My 2012 retina MBP is still running so well and I don't think you'd find that longevity in any PC. Just my opinion.

      • As a user of a PC/laptop (Windows). Purchased about 2-3 years ago. I know what you mean, I want to bin it already. Considering a mac as my next purchase. Just not right now.

      • likewise.

I still have my 2010 macbook pro and it's still going strong as my second laptop. well worth the money.

        • The macbook and macbook pro 13 from 2010 till about 2013/2014 represented great value for money (if you didn't run into the dreaded GPU failure issue) whether new or if you picked them up second hand down the track.

In particular most of that line up you could upgrade the memory yourself and you could get double Apple's official limit on some of those machines (16G compared to 8G). Of course it also helped if you could upgrade the hard disk to a SSD…

The current lineup with no user replaceable memory and sometimes no way to upgrade the storage either.. is a lot less appealing than the previous 2-3 generations.

I'm seriously having to weigh up the benefits of improved CPU and so on for modern models compared to buying a 2012+ retina display machine and just replacing the battery.. you should be able to pickup one of those and a new battery for under $1K now.

      • I'm not being biased but the main reason why I love macs so much are because they last so damn long

I second that, my early 2011 Mac is also going great guns. All I did last year was that I replaced the standard hard drive with SSD - best decision ever.

      • I've been waiting to upgrade my 2008 MB and eventually snapped one from the recent Myer deal MBP 13 (2017-base model) for $1529. Currently using it to run Traktor and NI S4 and works brilliantly, only negative was that I had to purchase a female usb to type-c adapter which costs >$4 on eBay. Also do some video editing and transferring files was an annoyance, so I bought a Sandisk 128gb Ultra Dual Drive which is used to move files.

Overall, runs pretty smooth and a great addition to a PC-user, a great portable machine for light-med use. Here's to another 8+ years.

        • i regret not getting the 2017 nTB mbp when it was that cheap.
i was too focused on getting a 16gb upgrade custom order … ram is super important to me..

          how storage does space fair?

  • As always it depends on what you buy and what you use it for.

  • I bought my 13-inch MacBook Pro, with i5 CPU, 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD in 2013. Fast forward more than 3 years later, this 13-inch MacBook Pro of similar price range still only comes with 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD. Disappointing :(

  • My early 2011 Macbook Pro is still going strong after I upgraded the HDD to an SSD. But my need for new shiny things is kicking in…

  • Anyone who bought previously, can you confirm if you do a click and collect, you can collect in a day or two from the store. What about the invoice, is it for the full amount ?

  • "This listing was ended by the seller because the item is no longer available."

    I believe they're sold out.

  • Missed it! Sigh

    • Hopefully it will be back tomorrow morning :)

      • Fingers crossed! Have seen anything yet!

  • Anyone know if there is anything else out there similar to this deal, with similar specs?

Don't mind if the touchbar is there or not; my fingers are probably too fat to use it…
