60,000 Qantas or Amplify Points with $3000 Spend/90 Days St George Signature Credit Card First Annual Fee Waived Apply in Branch

680

Just confirmed this promotion is still valid as long as you open a new account at St George in a branch. I did this at Chatswood branch. They applied the code EB in the system. I received the card in a few days and activated it. I called up the customer service hotline and confirmed that the first year's annual fee is being waived and the 60,000 QFF promotion for $3000 spend in 90 days is valid. The manager at Chatswood branch said this promotion is valid for all applications at the branches. I would suggest that you confirm at a branch and post your experience here.

still waiting for my bonus points from the previous St.George deal

    • Me too!

    • +2

      St George is a joke

    • Same. Spoke to phone support and they said bonus points can take 8-12 weeks after minimum spend is reached.

  • Thanks for sharing. Good to see points still about after the interchange fee changes

  • +12

Just 'buyer beware' - These guys are pretty hopeless to deal with. YMMV

They sent my card to a non-existing branch (it was under construction) - when I told them there is no branch there (when I went to collect), they had to block that card and their system didn't allow them to send a new one until I went to a branch with 100 points of ID. They were then unable to confirm if annual fee was applicable until after the card was activated. Activated the replacement card, called up the contact centre and was told no annual fee in first year. A week later $279 annual fee is charged. Back on the phone to have it reversed.

Couldn't find info on their website about setting up Direct Debit. Went into a Sydney branch, spoke to some lady who kept changing her accent throughout the conversation (not sure if it was to mock me as I have a european accent myself). Filled out a direct debit form, she said she'd fax it to the processing team. Two weeks later I called to check if it's been set up. Was told they don't know until statement comes out. Called again after statement released, was told they never received the form. Was emailed another form that I had to fax to them (no email option offered). I've now received second statement with no mention of Direct Debit. Not sure if I should give up on it. Called to find out why I still haven't received the Qantas Lounge passes. Was told to google "enrol st george altitude priority pass" and enter my details - as if I couldn't have been enrolled on sign up.

Calling number on the back of the card was greeted with automated message "this number is no longer in use, you are being transferred".
Tried using "contact us" option in the iPhone app - did not work at all, it dials some number followed by commas and numbers (presumably menu selection options) but results in not going through to anywhere and just hanging up on you.

Still haven't received the bonus points, despite spending $3k in the first month.

Even though I just wrote a full page rant, I feel like I left out some more dramas I've had with this credit card. The most incompetent organisation I've ever dealt with and totally not worth the bonus points I may eventually receive. Just my experience, yours might be better or worse. Every time I called them I was transferred 2-3 times after lengthy wait times in each queue. On one call I was transferred back to the original team after speaking with 3 different consultants. You just get a runaround by demotivated employees dealing with outdated IT systems.

        I lol'ed

        • +5

I didn't when I rocked up to the address and saw a fenced off concrete block filled with construction workers. That branch opened about 8 weeks later…

      • Darn…..this reply is longer than my English essay!!

      • thanks for the warning, I'm glad I closed my accounts with them years ago.

Agreed. Their help desk is in the Philippines and I almost pulled out all my hair when trying to obtain my card. They kept telling me that I needed to supply stuff that I had already supplied, they just couldn't understand. They kept repeating the same thing to me over and over. Then they told me I had to pick my card up from a branch, it couldn't get sent to my house. Once I got the card, PayPass wasn't working, so I called them and they told me they would send a new card to my house, which they did. WTF?! As soon as I get my bonus points I'm cancelling this card and putting an end to my short but frustrating relationship with St. George.

Exact same thing happened to me twice! Then without sending anything the card got sent anyway

I work in the Hub of all their call centres In Manila. I think I slept with your Call Analyst

      • They have a local helpdesk too just as useless and just as many redundant questions. So in this case I put it down to their govce rather than an offshore problem.

I've had more stupid issues than I care to type about so i kept my warning pretty simple:)…. and yea no points yet

        • +5

You reminded me of redundant questions. On one of the calls I was asked "How many cheque or transaction accounts do you have with us?" My answer was "Zero". Next security question was…"Do you have any regular transfers into your accounts?" My visibly annoyed answer "If I don't have any accounts, how can I have transfers into them?"
When people act like robots and follow scripts to the letter, there is no hope for humanity!

        • @oleglap: yep total robots, so frustrating!

          @PleasureMe:

As above ive been working in Manila for 1.5 years. The common saying around here is assume you are dealng with a 7 year old and you will be ok. Thats the mentality level of 99% of the people. Those Phillipinos reading this are the other 1%

  • Thanks op
Did you have to apply for both credit and freedom accounts at the branch or did you have an existing freedom account

    • I just opened up a freedom account at the same time at the branch. It took me around 15 mins. They didn't need any address proof, just need my driver's license and the ID check was done online.

Cant seem to find the minimum wage requirement for the card. Can you let us know? When, applying, did the ask you a bank statement where your wages go to?

    • +1

      It's $75k p/a for this card.

They will ask for your last 2 payslips - no bank statement needed (may differ case to case though)

      • They asked me to email to them the pay slips from recent 2 months and the approval was made the following day.

      • Has anyone been approved successfully with sub 75k? I want to apply anyway but don't want a credit check (good standing) if they're going to deny me anyway.

      • Didn't work in my case. I met the 75K/pa condition but was offered plat card which comes with 40K bonus points. I applied online after opening the savings account. Will call them up for the fee waiver if it's not auto applied - that's gonna be an interesting call!

  • +1

Beware of the promise to waive the fee. I applied for previous deal however didn't activate the card because no one was able to confidently confirm that the fee would be waived. That stated 'you need to pay the fee, then of our team will review your case and could refund the fee'.

    • +1

I'm on the lookout again for that yearly change of fee-free/waived Frequent Flyer CC card (currently on ANZ). This one doesn't sound like it's worth the effort then, including the other comments about branch and stuff.

Hoping for a CBA/NAB/HSBC one then. (think I'm within that 12 months window still for Westpac)

    • I called the customer service centre and they confirmed immediately that the fee is waived for the first year.

  • How would this compare to the AMEX deal (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/316865) where it is 75000 Virgin Velocity points.

    • +3

      Different
But a good wallet would have 1 good mc/visa and 1 good amex
The st George amplify and amex Explorer is a tough combo to beat

      • While I agree you on the Amex Explorer (in my opinion has the best Amex earn rate outside of Restaurants and Supermarkets)
The StGeorge Visa only earns 0.75 frequent flyer points/$ and has a pretty bad gift card redemption rate (22,800pts=$100 woolies gift card)
Plenty of better Visa/MasterCard cards out there for your non Amex spend depending on if you are after cashback or frequent flier point.

        • I deal with cash rate of the points not giftcard value
Also there's a 10% bday bonus so the effective earn rate is 0.825 points per dollar
How many mc/visa cards offer that spend rate uncapped?

        • +1

@tuvz: Fair enough, I guess it depends on which airline points you prefer, what you value your points at (I use about 1c/pt) and how much you spend per month.

Of the top of my head not accounting for any bonus offers or other perks:

1 Qantas pt/$ uncapped: G&CMutual, BankAustralia, HSBC World (Criteria apply for HSBC world)
          1 Qantas pt/$ 10k cap: Qantas Premier
1 Virgin pt/$ 8k cap: Virgin Money High Flier
1 Qantas pt/$ 7.5k cap: ANZ FrequentFlyer Black
0.87 Virgin pt/$ $69k/yr cap (excluding transfer promos that exclude cap): Coles Rewards Mastercard
0.8 Etihad pt/$ uncapped: Coles Rewards Mastercard
And then there is plenty more that have a cap of $5k/mth or less

You are right if you are after uncapped, there is not too many option.

Any mention of cooldown period before being eligible for the bonus?

Last St George deal was early October last year so those who applied at that time (like me!) may not be eligible.

    • +1

Existing St.George customers who currently hold an Amplify Platinum or Amplify Signature card, or who have held one in the last 12 months, are not eligible for this offer

But some of us already have this deal :)

word of warning they expect alot of proof of income, be ready for this

    • Just like any other card they ask for payslips

      • yep but they were particularly strict with requirements for centrelink "income" , don't get back to you, and departments don't talk to each other. Just letting people know they didn't present themselves as well organised and if it wasn't for a contact i got through complaining, i would have never successfully got the card. PM me for the email address if you need to get directly to someone who can help.

  • Like your username OP. ;)

    • Yes, love the heart.

  • Does this apply for Bank of Melbourne branches, or is it strictly St George branches only? BOM seem to have an equivalent Amplify card as well.

  • Do you have to apply at a branch? Can you not apply online? The promotion seems to be listed online?

    • how to waive the first year annual fee if applied online ?

      • Ah I see, I missed that part, thanks.

    • No, you can't apply online as this is strictly an offer from the branch. They need to manually enter the promo code on their system.

  • Would ANZ Reward better option if I don't fly Qantas?
Note: I'm still serving 12 months waiting period for ANZ FF Black

    • +1

      It depends
      ANZ Black:
      75k pts = 37500 Velocity or 25k Cathay AsiaMiles/Singapore KrisFlier
Unlimited access to Veloce airport lounges (these are very scarce so you are unlikely to use this benefit)
      Earn rate: 2pts/$ up to $5000 (then 1pt/$) = 1 Velocity point or 0.66 AsiaMiles/KrisFlier

      StGeorge Signature Amplify
      60k pts = 30k Velocity / Singapore KrisFlier / Malaysia
2 priority pass airport lounges (located in most major airports)
      Earn rate: 1.5pts uncapped = 0.75pts/$ Velocity / Singapore KrisFlier / Malaysia
+10% bonus points on your birthday

So depends on which airline you want to credit your points to and how much you spend per month.
If you just want gift cards then ANZ has the better redemption rate but the Coles Reward MasterCard has an even better one.

      • Thanks heaps for detailed breakdown.
Yes I notice coles reward mastercard redemption rate is close to 1% (ie. Spend $10k to get $100)

        • No worries, I feel someone should benefit from all the research I did :)
Coles Rewards also doesn't have any international transaction fees so great for purchasing goods from overseas or travelling.
Every 2-3 months they have a promotion with bonus points usually around 20k ($100) which covers the first year annual fee.

    Hi Guys,

my wife and i are going to apply at our local branch, i will let you know how we go..

    • How did it go?

  • +4

Avoid this bank like the plague is all I can recommend.

  • You just have to go to a branch and ask to open a new credit card and ask them to apply the code EB in the application ?

Do you need to bring anything ? 2 payslips + driver licence is enough ?

    • Yes, that's what I have done 2 weeks ago at the Chatswood branch. The promo code seemed to be EB. They have the identity check thing on their system and they will photocopy your driver's license. I emailed my payslips to them the following day and the credit card was approved in 2 days. Activated online and set up the PIN code. All good and just need to spend the $3000 to get the points!

      • What's the min income?

  • Just got the same deal at Chatswood.

    • is there any particular staff need to mention his or her name ?

      • My application was done with Arthur.

  • I've had a pleasant experience with them so far. Internet login is a slight pain compared to ING, at least the phone app now has fingerprint login.

The 1% purchase rate is they only reason I've kept the card, with the monies just sitting in the offset right now.

  • So you go to a Bank of Melbourne branch?
Whats the catch with opening a new account?
    Fees?
    Min monthly deposit?
    What account do you open?

  • Rang up Haymarket Branch and was told yes they do honour this.

Turned up to the branch to be told that this promotion has already expired. When I told her that I rang earlier, she then conferred with her colleagues who all agreed.

Might have to make a trip up to Chatswood.

    • Suggest that you could call up Arthur at the Chatswood branch to confirm first.

  • Opened freedom account for $50 deal together with this credit card last week. Banker confirmed waiving the annual fee for the first year.
Thought to post the same once I confirmed but still waiting for card delivery.

  • sorry random question, what's the background on having a username called cardiology haha ?

    • Just love the heart!

  • I just opened a freedom account few day ago. But I don't have payslip, I have Westpac statement, that should be ok?

  • Has anyone tried to apply with bank of Melbourne due to being ineligible for St George because of having one or closed one in the last 12 Months?
I asked the guy at the BOM and he called the credit card department who said it is ok, and you are eligible because you haven't been with BOM, but not sure if that is true.

    • My partner tried today in branch. Was told that it was manager discretion and the manager would do it if she opened a transaction account as well, so she signed up. No official documentation to confirm etc though.

      • I guess one can always go back to the same person and ask them. I also signed up for both transaction and signature card.

  • How long does it take to receive the Qantas lounge passes? I have requested online like 6 weeks ago. :(

  • Called Bank of Melbourne Ivanhoe and they said promotion is for existing customers only. Went into the Northland branch and was told yes the promotion is on only to find out 10 minutes later they had no idea what I was talking about.

    • That is correct, it is for existing customers. You could become an existing customer instantly, open a complete freedom transaction account. Deposit $2,000 to become eligible for $50 cashback and not incur $5 monthly fee. Then apply for the card. It took five minutes to open a new account and become an existing customer :)

  • +3

I applied by 'phone on Thursday. The rep I spoke to was quite switched on and knew all about the "EB" promo. The application process was painless (being an existing customer might have helped), and I was conditionally approved by the end of the call. I responded to the automatically generated e-mail with my two most recent payslips, and received a message yesterday confirming my approval and informing me that my card will be ready to collect from my nominated branch within the next five business days.

So to all those who were thinking of going into a branch, but were put off by some of the experiences mentioned, just give them a call instead. The annual fee is still waived. :)

    • Don't count any chickens yet. Trust me :)

    • Which state are you in? Just wanting to know if the same applies specifically to BoM accounts.

      • Which state are you in?

        ACT.

        • +1

          That's not a state

      • +1

My amplify signature card from BOM has already had $2,500 spent on it. What do you want to know? Like I have said a few posts up that BOM is very easy process.

        • I hope your 90 days aren't up as you need to spend $3000.

        • Just wanted to confirm the EB code was the same to apply. If so, I might go about opening an everyday account, and then going for the card. Though this will be my fourth credit card in the past month, so could be pushing it, LOL.

        • @gimme:
I only received my card on Monday, so will with in the 90 days.

  • So has anyone actually got their points from the previous deal?

    • I just received mine.

  • How strict are St George Bank on the 12 month previous card holder rule when it comes to giving the bonus points?

  • Is this deal still active?
Looking to apply mid-August if it still is.
Can anyone comment on whether they received their points yet after the spend?
Can we close the everyday account once the $50 cashback is received? If so, is this easy to do over the phone or must it be done in Branch?

    Thanks.

    • +1

      Is this deal still active?

Yes. I was told over the 'phone that it runs until 20/9/17, which is the same date as the offer on their website (but don't apply online, of course).

      • You're a champion…I've taken out three credit cards in the past month, so it's nice to know I can wait a while to apply for the this deal. :D

  • Applied in branch and got it fee-free, however just got my letter of offer in the mail and it shows the annual fee will be charged.

    Lets see how this goes..

    • One advantage of phone applications is that the convos are usually recorded, and you can ask for a reference number.

      • Yea but I did it in branch :( so no recorded conversation!

        • +1

You'll be fine. Just tell them you were offered the EB promotion if they don't waive it. If they were to refuse, you'd only need to drop the word 'ombudsman' to persuade them.

    • What did you offer letter actually say?
I applied in branch last week and got my offer letter today too.

      Annual fee $279
"Initial annual fee - debited 12 months from the date of the statement following the date we debit your first cash advance or credit purchase transaction to the account"

So the way it is worded, it sounds to me like they only apply that annual fee after the first 12 months.
I am wondering whether anyone else's offer letter is worded differently.

  • Just applied over phone, the everyday banking promo still alive and well. Approved, just need to verify income. Yippee.
