Sounds good. Is the card genuinely suitable for gaming though?

    • +4

Uh, is a 1050Ti good in a laptop..? Yes. People in the millions are still on chips like the 840/850/860M (Hell, just sold a laptop with an 860M in it for $1000)

Unless you want to enter the 2500~ region where a decent laptop with a 1070/1080 in it, this is a really good deal — I would just hope theres a spare bay for a data drive aswell as the 256GB SSD.

      • Thanks! It was a genuine question I don’t know much about gaming or graphics cards.

      • I've got the i7 version and it came with a 256GB SSD + 1TB HDD, so this should have a spare bay

      • $1000!!!??? damn, I sold mine with an 870M a week ago for $700 and even that struggled to sell.. good job!

  • +1

Would love to know how people have been going with this performance wise! I'm so close to dropping some cash!!

    • -8

You can make that back mining bit coins with this

      • You'd get like $2 a day and the laptop would hardly be usable while you're mining..

        • +3

          💰 back in 4 years

        • +1

@Gimli: Heh. Mining difficulty is always increasing. Probably $1 a day next month. Who knows what bitcoin is going to be doing. This past week it dropped $1k but it has almost recovered again. It would be a very bad idea to buy a laptop thinking you'll mine your money back.

  • Has this got red WASD keys or not? The ones in the shops have red WASD keys, which I don't like, but the photos on Ebay look like it's normal WASD keys (i.e. not red).

    • +1

I ordered mine from the dell website and it came with WASD keys with a red outline (so they keys themselves are not solid red). The keys on the keyboard are black, with the character in red. The keys that are different have a red line border for WASD characters.

  • Coming from Dell overseas factory in Malaysia… GST/Duty ???

    • +3

All Dell machines are built in Malaysia. There is no additional duty/tax as you are buying from an Australian business, just like how you don't pay duty when you buy a car or an expensive TV from a reputable business.

      • +1

        Thanks for confirming no GST/Duty.
It was a question rarher than a comment.

All good. Just answering it and providing another example to help clarify. No offence intended =)

  • Is this much worse than an i7-7700?

    • 7700hq or 7700? 7700hq not that much. if 7700 yeah much less performance but not really noticeable day to day use unless you are rendering or streaming but then again the 7700 is a desktop cpu so can't really compare

    • +2

The i7 7700 (desktop processor) is a quad core with hyper threading; 4 cores with 8 threads. The i5 7300HQ (laptop processor) is also a quad core but lacks the hyperthreading and has slightly slower clock speeds with a smidgen less cache.

For CPU workloads that don't scale as well with additional threads (e.g. day-to-day web browsing, office/basic productivity, most but not all games) the difference would perhaps be low to moderate depending on the specific task. Perhaps the difference would be ~30% if measured in a benchmark. The task would probably not feel too "sluggish" if you were to do a side by side comparison. For heavier workloads with better thread scaling (e.g. video encoding/rendering) the difference would be much more substantial and be easily noticed. I estimate it would be effectively something like ~80% faster at re-encoding a video, for example.

A fairer and more apt comparison would be to the i5 7600, 7500, or 7400 (desktop processors): quad cores with no hyperthreading much like the 7300HQ. Against these, performance would still somewhat favor the desktop processors in less threaded workloads due to the higher clock speeds of the desktop parts, but there would be no further gain in regard to heavily threaded workloads. The 7300HQ has a base clock of 2.5GHz and a boost clock of 3.5GHz. For reference, the 7500 has a base clock of 3.4GHz and a boost clock of 3.8GHz. The 7600 has slightly higher clocks than that and the 7400's clocks are slightly lower than either of the those.

So in terms of cores/threads it's like this:
      i7 7700 (desktop model) ~> i7 7700HQ (laptop model)
      i5 7400/7500/7600 (desktop models) ~> i5 7300HQ (laptop model)

Except the desktop models run somewhat faster than their laptop equivalents.

      • It looks like you worked all that out by imagining how fast things are which isn't a great way of doing these things.

        • For the same architecture (both Kaby Lake), it absolutely is when you look at spec sheets (mostly for cores/threads and clock speed) and rough benchmark data. Performance comes almost exclusively from clock speed, IPC, and cores/threads. For different architecture, sure, theory-centric comparisons can be less accurate.

        • @MHLoppy:

off topic. I note ozB does not feature many desktops. I believe they are cheaper and 'better' than laptops. what would be a good value for money desktop? Lenovo? I don't know how to compare the different specs between desk and laptops.
did not know where else to post it.

        • @Peccadilloes:

          get something like this
          Dell Desktop

        • @designate:

I was only after a small desktop for home use. wondered if there was something better value than lenovo:-

          http://www3.lenovo.com/au/en/deals/current-offers/deals-of-t…

        • @Peccadilloes:

          Similar setup

          http://www.dell.com/au/p/inspiron-3268-desktop/pd?oc=z211233…

I think it depends on your requirements

        • @Peccadilloes:

Prebuilt desktops are not something I keep up with too much, so I don't have much in the way of recommendations. You could try posting on the OzBargain forums or maybe another Australian forum that deals with PCs / PC hardware (e.g. whirlpool, OCAU)?

  • Is this machine capable of running GTA 5 with everything in max? haha

  • has anyone bought off the ebay store before? Does the item arrive earlier than the expected delivery estimation?

    • I biught mine off ebay on the weekedn and it was being processed within a few days.. took about a week to ship out and now is on transit i expect it this week. Apparently from what ive heard the main delay was getting the ips stock in and they started processing once they had that in… it should be quicker now. I used the 5%ebay discount and got them to do a custom listing for me with the 1year accident cover $69 normally and i onky ended up paying $2 for it

      • Thanks for the info :)

  • Specs actually say IPS

    DISPLAY
    15.6-inch FHD (1920 x 1080) IPS Anti-Glare LED-Backlit Display

  • Can I also claim TRS if I purchase from ebay?

    • You likely can since its dell australia but how do you plan to bring it back if its over to $900 limit on the way back?

Careful you could get fined if you dont declare it if you bring it back into the country if you claimed TRS.

      • Is there any way that would ever happen ever?? I've been through some customs checkpoints in my time and they really don't seem to be demanding to know if the laptops people are filing through the xray machine were bought and had TRS claims made on them prior to having left the country.

I'd bet the fine the chances are roughly 0.01%.

        • If anyone want to take their chances. Sure feel free. Not only do they have to pay back the tax. They also cop a fine.

Again. There is only one responsible person if they decide to do this and they got caught. Thats them and them alone.

        • @xoom:

Yeah, but… Well the $900 thing was news to me. So the deal is you can get a TRS refund on an item and take it back into the country again on your return, so long as it cost $900 or less and anything above that must not (in theory) ever be coming back in?

        • @crankycarrot: yes. If the item costs less than $900 you can bring it back without being made to pay the tax back.

For example bought bose qc35. Its less than $900. I simply brought it back on my return to australia.

      • I'm not coming back to the country ;)

        • Then claim away.

  • I get an error when using the C5OZ code. 'This code can't be applied to your order.'

  • With the new eBay 10% off deal it brings it down $1146.74

    Codeword PLENTY

I bought it during the eofys sales. Very happy with the performance and the screen.

Confirmed through various tests it's an IPS screen albeit not the highest quality IPS.

I'm crying now that it's so much cheaper lol

    • Bought this yesterday with the old code, got it refunded and purchased using the new code :)

How do you do the IPS screen test?

      • +1

Programs like hwinfo64 can tell you most things about your computer, including the screen make and model.

Both red and black out of stock now

  • +1

I ordered this deal a couple of weeks ago and it arrived yesterday. It came with an IPS screen and also seems Dell gave me a free upgrade to an I7 CPU, 16GB memory, and 128GB SSD with 1TB hard drive. Wonder if anyone else received the same surprise? Anyway, thank you OZBARGAIN!

    • Wow, may be they ran out of stock?

  • Well, I can confirm that Dell did not make a mistake, as I was sent an email invoice labeling the $300+ in upgrades. I agree that they probably ran out of the I5's and decided it wasn't worth it refunding my money. So nice of them. Other than the weight, this is a great laptop, so far. :-)

    • So how much do you have to pay Dell for this upgrade ?

      • He payed nothing extra, he just got an invoice confirming it was intentional not accidental.

        • Any chance to get the Order details or Invoice #

  • Did anyone else got an i7 Model with 16GB RAM and i7 CPU.
