I got this email from Qatar Airways. From what I understood to be eligible for 500000 extra qmiles one needs to fly on the launching flight to every new routes from 3 Aug 2017 to 31 March 2018. There are already 3 new launches scheduled for August, 08/08, 21/08, 28/08 to Sohar, Prague, Kiev.

Not easy I think but might help some. One-way flight is allowed so one can possibly fly to/from Prague/Kiev on the same trip.

These routes involve transiting through Doha … I'd be cautious about that, given the trade dispute and airspace bans that's currently apply to Qatar airways.

    • They are friendly with Iran and Turkey so don't seem to be having too many problems with the airspace ban.

      See here: https://www.flightradar24.com/data/aircraft/operator-qtr/

      • Who knows how the situation will play out in the next few months… hence the caution.

I think CBR-(SYD)-DOH is due to launch in Feb 2018, so add that to the list.

Just to be clear you need to be on the first flight to each of these launch sites?

  • wrong calculation

  • Example routes/price to qualify?

It says "first flight" but goes to March so…?

  • Is there a table of what you can book with those miles? The redeem website seems useless: https://www.qatarairways.com/en/Privilege-Club/redeem-qmiles…

    • 200k points to anywhere in the world in Business class
300k points to anywhere in the world in First class.

So a fancy return trip to wherever Qatar or their partners fly

      • Or almost 3 triples for a couple ( 2 people) to paris return from sydney (510 000) (economy )

        • Hmmm, do points expire?
If so, a couple could go twice return in Premium Economy for the same 510k

(Just assuming you will earn a base 10k from the initial flights)

        • @BluBoy: wait no im an idiot i think those Qpoints for flights are one way…

          so 85,000 +85,000 back for 2 people is 340,000 points :/

As to points expiring I'm not sure if they do.

        • @TerryJustTerry:

          Yea, I see it now.
So really, 3 return flights for one person, or 1 return flight for a family of three in economy class.

You can usually pickup return to Europe for $1k (in low season).
So this gives a value of $3k, but with the flexibility that you MAY be able to get a ticket during peak

        • @BluBoy: yeah when i realized it was only 1.5 trips for a couple it kind of kills the deal imo, for me at least.

  • So they are launching three new routes in August (Prague, Kiev and Sohar).
But if they launch any other new routes before March 2018 (likely) does this mean we'd also have to do those?

These three flights MIGHT be manageable, but if they add 20 new routes over Christmas…

It's a nice idea, but I wouldn't be surprised - and would expect for most Australians based - that you would spend more for the flights than the benefit of the rewards points.

Then you also have to add that you have to be completely flexible, and take time off for all these.

So a fun idea maybe, but as a bargain it's not.

From the opening post it says that the first flight you need to fly on is today to or from Sohar. Given that would rule almost everyone out, even in addition to the above, a negative since if you miss that flight, all the other flights are wasted as you don't even get that reward.

    • Seconded. And whatever perceived benefits that we might be able to use out of 500K points would have been far surpassed by the min. 4+flights that we would have to take, either ex-Oz or incl. positioning flights. No deal

    • 03/08 flight to Sohar was a mistake. The launch is 08/08 so achievable if one has time and money for travel. To me it almost sounds like a free carriage but unfortunately I don't have time. Nobody knows but I don't imagine Qatar is going to launch 10+ destinations by the end of March 2018. Probably 3 or 4 round that can be accommodated in 4 trips? Then you'll get almost reimbursed by points.

Q miles are sold for $US50 each block of 1000 points on their website but the market price is probably much lower. Even at a third that price 500k points are worth over $8k.

  • Just was reading the other day about Qatar airways loyalty program and no any positive reviews. Apparently is it very difficult to impossible to redeem Qatar points.
