  • I guess, also this - Peak Usage - Weekdays 4pm-8pm AEST , 35c kWh

    • That's for smart meters

      • Ahh.
It's all too confusing for me.

        • It looks promising so far, their tariff 33 is a little high but the 25% fixes that. I have emailed to confirm if my current feed-in will stay the same.

  • -1

Daily supply charge from their Home Saver Plus plan is actually 105.43c ex GST. (that's what 25% discount applicable to)
and there is a missing solar metering service charge in their price fact sheet too.

    • Solar Meter Charge
      cents per day 6.43 ,7.073

      • +1

        thank you ;) myth solved.

    • That statement is incorrect. The discount is ONLY on your usage. The discount excludes supply charges. Hence it is not a full 25% discount on your total bill. The actual discount in totality if you were to calculate it will depend on your average consumption plus your essentially "fixed" supply charges. Confusing i know.

  • Whats the catch? At 25% off these guys are roughly 10-15% more then anyone else in QLD last I checked…

    • Especially when you can get 14% off origin total bill including connection costs.

      • how??

    • Whats the catch? At 25% off these guys are roughly 10-15% more then anyone else in QLD last I checked…

So why did you upvote it? Downvoting is what you should do.

      • Ah, I think you're misreading their comment. Seems to me they're saying it's 10-15% more discount than anyone else is offering?

    • The discounts vary so much due to how Electricity Retailers mark up the tariff rate.
EG to offer the larger discount first Alinta will increase the price so it can offer a bigger discount

The catch is easier to understand if I use an example.

      Retailer 1 offers Tariff 11@ 25.00c x 400kWh = $100.00
      Retailer 2 offers Tariff 11@ 22.05c x 400kwh = $88.23 (cheaper tariff)

In both cases you use the same 400kwh of electricity however after discounts

      Retailer 1 offers 25% = $75 bill amount
      Retailer 2 offers 15% = $75 bill amount

So although Retailer 1 offered a bigger discount this still resulted in the same $75 bill due to the higher Tariff Rates.

      • I have no idea what you are talking about.

Alinta has the rates as everyone else. They are literally 25% off.

  • Been with Dodo for quite a while and have found them to be the cheapest of the bunch but now with Dodo just increasing their prices it looks like Alinta is cheaper, more so for the Daily Supply Charge.

  • I negotiated back and forth 2 times each between Origin and Click getting higher and higher discounts. They were both eager to do it!

    • What was the highest discount you got from Origin? What state are you in? Do you have solar?
When I have negotiated with Origin in the past I usually say my friend got x% discount, can I have the same discount?

      • I did the same with Origin recently. I'm in Qld and have the 44c FiT + 6c from Origin. My mate got 16% off total bill, but they wouldn't match it as it's only offered by their "secret" team aka retention team. I have 16% off usage which is fairly standard these days. Will look at Alinta, but 25% off is just marketing, need to break down costs based on a few years usage.

      • 21% off usage i.e 0.184c. Daily rate not reduced IIRC.
I'm in Brisbane. No solar. Low use household.
Click was just cheaper over 12 months for me as they also had $100 rebate.
Origin then offered to discount my gas but I'd already finalised the change

Old Solar Feed in Tariff is only 44c, so no go for me (on 50c now), I would loose $400 per year compared with Origin with 16% off usage.
Edit: Feed in is not clear from their price sheet, could be 55c for old connections, which would be better than Origin. Click Energy Shine Extra would still be better than Alinta.

    • My read of the fact sheet is that you will get a retailer FIT of 11c on top of the 44c government FIT.

      • That is absolutely correct. The government foots the 44c. Retailer "voluntarily" pays 11c. Resulting in a total feed in rate of 55c.
To fund the 11c feed-in the Retailer effectively ups their other tariffs and supply charges on your plan to fund.
Hence why in Alinta's case the "supply charge" changes from 99c to 105.43c if you have solar connected. In theory a connection is a connection whether you have solar or not. Go figure…..

  • Click has 22%discount off usage and daily charge, how does it compare?

    • +1

Not all supplier charges are the same, best to check individual rates, Click's T11 price is a lot higher then the others.

      • +3

Clicks per unit rate and daily supply charge is a lot higher

  • So looks like dodo is still cheaper?

    • Looking at DODO's plans and they seem more expensive with the rates. exc GST.2625KWh 1.1610 Daily rate. Need to check to be sure but that seems to be more than AGL even with teh discounts they both offer 12% for AGL and 15% for DODO

  • With Alinta's offering, I'll get a slightly cheaper bill each quarter ($5-$10 saving) if air con is used in that period, otherwise powerdirect still gives me cheaper base rate even without any discount. hmm … not sure if this worth the switching?

    • Trying the powerdirect website. Have found their rates which are same as AGL's usage supply but what are their discounts?

      • I believe they give 12+2% discount for 24 month contract. I'm not in contract and receiving 63.52c exc GST supply charge on separate energy plan.

  • Simply energy with 18% usage discount is also a good deal as their electricity rates are cheap as well

    • I was about to go with Simply Energy but I heard on the grapevine that they haven't risen their rates along with everyone else and supposed to be doing that at end of this month.

Also the 18% is only available to RACQ memebers otherwise it is 15% which is still pretty good anyway

    • +1

but they have a shocking supply charge for controlled load meter!!

      • +1

Simply T33 Supply Charge $90 per quarter , everybody else $3

  • +1

Well dodgy Atlinta - if you have a problem with them good luck - and you will sooner or later over billing. Every trick in the book.

    • +1

      Agree.

Also seems the energy ombudsman takes the side of the retailer and is more like an industry representation group than a customer advocate. They just copied and pasted erroneous replies from Alinta, completely ignoring my thorough documentation of their advertisments clearly stating XYZ.

I could have destroyed them in a courtroom but couldn't be bothered.

  • Plenty of complaints online and their offer is not as good as it seems. They're not the cheapest and as usual comparisions are not straightforward.

Chinese owned company so profits go overseas as usual.

I'd avoid them. Plenty more feedback on Whirlpool.

    • Plenty more feedback on Whirlpool.

      One post and 5 replies..lol

    • What on earth are you talking about?

They charge the same as AGL which is the official energex rate. Then you have the big discount on top.

No other provider provides 10% off + better rates then AGL in QLD without some crazy contract.

So Alinta is 10-15% cheaper then its competitors.

      • I have 14% off origin total bill without any crazy contract.

        • +1

You don't appear to be located in QLD?

If you are, please link to the QLD fact sheet that offers 14% off electricity and equal or better rates to AGL and no contract.

        • I am in Brisbane.

To get good rates you need to ask for them. AGL was cheaper due to my low usage as they have lower connection fees so I called origin and asked them to beat it.

        • @dibbz:

Well calling and convincing them to get 14% off is not really that great when Alinta has 25% off.

I know its total bill but thats what, 14% of $90? $13?

11% (the difference) of a $500 usage bill is $55

        • My quarterly bill March-May was $185.

My original offer was 21% off usage but as I have low usage / solar 1% off total bill was better for me.

Every case is different. This offer isn't good for every case.

        • +1

My quarterly bill March-May was $185.

Must gave a crap load of panels…

      • All Retailers charge a margin on the "official" energex rates. Some are just less transparent than others.

  • +1

I've crunched the numbers based on the discounted charges proposed by Alinta, compared to AGL where i already receive a 12% discount. The $455 bill from AGL would come down to $424 with Alinta. so a further saving of ~7%.

you need to do your own numbers to work out if you will be better off.

    • I'm curious, where did the extra cost of 6% come from?

      • The Pre Discount Peak cost for AGL is $0.2461 and $0.2600 with Alinta. T33 is $0.1996 with AGL and $0.2200 with Alinta. Daily supply is $0.9851 with AGL and $0.9900 with Alinta.

  • This offer, for me, does not add up to savings compared with Origins standing offers (no contract)
https://www.energymadeeasy.gov.au/offer-search shows all and includes any discounts it says.

    origin ORI376544SR
    alinta ALI391437SR

entering our usage from the last bill, Alinta is around $30 more for a year so wheres the savings/deal? What am I looking at wrong.
I can see other companies are a whole lot cheaper with their discounts.

    • You must be doing something wrong, assuming you are on their 10% plan, Altina's rates are similar, they're lower on the daily supply charge, using my last quarter comparison, I would save $120, just waiting on confirmation from Altina that my Solar feed-in will stay @.50¢.

      • i just typed in my usage from the last bill into the gov site and it gives you a list. looked at my plan (which is the base origin) and this alinta one . left column is normal price, right column is with all discounts included.

I dont have solar or anything weird.

i think, maybe, the gov site doesnt work the discount out correctly.

        • We need an excel sheet…Lyl please.

        • @nocure:
          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/322277
this one doesnt have them all but I changed the Origin one to Standing (the 10% discount is removed thats all, base prices are the same.
works out alinta is about $80 cheaper per quarter (last quarter was, amazingly, a low use one for us 1006/449kWh)

        • @PVA:
          Nice,job done, thanks Adam

    • +1

the search site does not include discount, you need to calculate the discount yourself~

      • It gives both normal and discounted prices I found.

  • I have no solar.
    We use a shit tonne of electricity - 11/33 = 2100/750kwh
(no idea why as we are 2 adults 3 kids under 5 and barely use heating or cooling)

Alinta works out cheaper using the spreadsheet made by Adam
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/322277

    I'm changing from Click

    • That is a lot. We're a family of 6 and even over Summer when using the air-con we used 2031/417.

Based on that usage and with Dodo's price increase it's time for us to move on and it looks like Alinta is significantly cheaper than the rest by a good margin.

  • Made the switch to Alinta this morning after phoning Dodo and they said the best they could do was $100 off my next bill which was basically nothing as I'll almost save that much in my first quarter with Alinta.

  • Who still give usage discount? Origin says no, stuck with 114, thinking of alinta cos only 99 per day

  • Here is the comparison of AGL , origin and alinta
    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1eiPKbpXJQP8y-7JodD0Q…

can anyone help me to fill in other company with max discount?
    :D

  • I heard this deal on the radio and started researching
I have a spreadsheet that compares my use with current provider and plan and then whatever I want to compare with.
Currently with Click on 15% discount.
Alinta don't discount the daily supply like Click (total bill). Don't know what they do with the feed in.
Alinta's rates are much lower that Click's new rates.
Alinta points to different plans in different places on their site. Daily supply rate varies from 99c to $2.75.This is the only concern I have, am waiting on clarity before switching. Was told $1.08 would apply.
If I get the plan I identified as "Domestic Single Rate with Controlled Load 2 and Solar Gen - Effective 14th August 2017" my current bill would be $161 cheaper than Click.
    https://customer.alintaenergy.com.au/sign-up/sign-up-step-2?…

    • $1.08 include GST seems valid~

    • Confirmed that the $1.08 rate applies. I have signed up.
Interesting that ALinta's rates before discount would still come out $9 cheaper than the current bill with Click.

  • get it in writing is correct

  • Hi All,

I put together a quick calc for my own purposes.
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/u819u8ntv3x7w0b/Alinta%20Compariso…

This may save you some time if you are with Origin and have T11, T33 (controlled load 2) and Solar.
I save about $20 with the Alinta offer.

A calc with your own usage, current tariff rates and discounts is the only way to work out if the Alinta offer is any good.

It is impossible to just compare Rates or Discounts in isolation as the Electricity Retailer's tweak the mix of these variables making it very hard for consumers to compare apples with apples.

I take no responsibility for any errors in the calcs. This is something i whipped together on the train after i saw the Alinta announcement in the paper.

As i understand Alinta (China) are in bed with the QLD Government for essentially cost price wholesale energy
For QLDers initially this is a good deal as there is no wholesale margin passed on to us.
However ultimately QLDers lose as the profits that would have gone to QLD Government now go to China. Go figure

  • I'm in Queensland and Origin Energy is my supplier for electricity. I was getting 16% pay on time discount for usage only, but plan expired end of August and they said they would not renew for 16% this year. I applied to go to Alinta for the 25% usage discount. Today I received a phone call from origin as part of the transfer of my account to Alinta and they offered me a 21% discount for all usage and charges .
