  • Some deals have shown the previous 6th gen for approximately $310. Some have suggested to go for the newer gen for extra $100.

The title said $351.20, do I miss something?

    • You are effectively getting the newer 7th gen for $58.80 less than it normally sells for.

N.Korea will be sending over a bunch of nuc's shortly if you can wait a few days

  • I doubt you'd notice any difference in the real world between Intel Core generations, unless you have a specific need like onboard HEVC, etc.

But in this case this NUC has HDMI 2. Which is huge.

        And USB type c

      • Hence 'specific need'.

But yeah, HDMI2, USB-C, CEC, etc are good if you have a use for them.

New features in the 7th gen i3 NUC, compared to 6th gen i3 NUC:

    • 10-bit HEVC and VP9 HW decoding
    • Basic HDMI-CEC functionality
    • USB Type-C port (without thunderbolt 3 support - though I doubt most people need thunderbolt 3)

There is also the HDMI 2 support. However, the 6th gen (Skylake) i3 can support 4K@60Hz via the mini DisplayPort and there are mini DisplayPort to HDMI cables supporting 4K@60Hz. That cable costs ~$40 if you purchased one from Amazon - if you really want 4K@60Hz for the 6th gen NUC, mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable is the cheapest option (if your monitor supports is - honestly all 4K monitors should have DisplayPort input).

However, there is currently a driver issue with 7th gen NUCs at the resolution of 4K@60Hz. Intel is looking into it. Also, bear in mind that there is no mini display port on these NUCs now so you do need to use USB-C if you want to connect to your monitor via DisplayPort. The 6th gen NUC has/had the BIOS issue (make sure you upgrade to the latest BIOS asap, in case you received one that belongs to the old batch) - and if you want proper m.2 support. Both gens have issues basically.

The 7th gen NUC is generally a better buy if 4K and/or media consumption is important. That's why it is still $50 above the previous gen. However, the main reason for not much discount (or very limited amount) is that most of those retailers participating in the so called 20% off event have raised prices on most items. I am finding that for most of the popular items, we are only getting 5% real discount (once you factored in the price increase).

  • Does it have internal sata ports? Could I turn it into a NAS?

    • One SATA port only (and one m.2 port).

  • I'm assuming the hdd and ram needs to be added on top?
    What about OS - Windows?

    • You need RAM, SSD (m.2 or SATA3), and OS: Windows 10 or linux. No Windows 8/7 support for Kaby Lake or Ryzen CPUs.

    • Yes, you need all the above, plus keyboard and mouse.
