I ended up getting a Yamaha YHT-294 for $440 (from JB Hifi)
I haven't heard the Z5500's so I can't compare, but the Yamaha system is decent. The receiver seems like a really decent piece of kit. The satellites are too small and lack mid-range frequencies but for $440 for a receiver, 4 speakers and an active sub what can you expect?
Price alone should be the reason why anyone gets it.

I reckon your barttery in the m950 is defective. I use my m950 for over a week without recharging. Try replacing the battery with something decent like an eneloop or GP.

I have since bought the X-540 speakers and they are much better. No humming, back speakers sound great, speakers overall are better and the subwoofer too is better. On par with the X-230 except in 5.1 which is a good thing. Matrix mode works really well to emulate 5.1 from 2 channel sources and actually positions sound infront/behind (tested on Xbox 360) as well as voice focused on center speaker/no voice on back speakers (tested with music). Great that you can turn it on/off as well unlike the Z506's 3D mode (same as matrix) which cannot be turned off. Scored them for $79 at Dick Smith (clearance stock).

It makes me feel much better having spent 270 on the z5500(fluidtek bundle then sold the keyboard) rather than the z506.
But that humming sound, you sure it wasn't a defective model?
I thought it was good at the time because they had recently came out and the only reviews for them were made by logitech…
Having another user reviewing items really helps the community.
The humming sound might very well have been a defect, I'm not sure. But the back speakers were terrible and the subwoofer relatively weak compared to the X-230/X-540's subwoofer. So even if they were defective I wouldn't have returned them for a replacement. Was happy to get my money back. Overall though, the speakers are a step down. As mentioned, anything too high pitch will echo/ring and give off a really cheap/hollow sound.
Yeah, there aren't that many reviews for the Z506. Some reviews gave the false impression that the speakers would be better since they have a tweeter on each speaker. This is not the case though.. One review says they're good for the price but how they can't recommend them over the X-540. If anyone wants to get the Z506, they'd be better off getting the X540 or even the X530. Though the X530 doesn't have a matrix mode button so I don't know how it'd work (if it can) when emulating 5.1 from a 2 channel source. With the X540 you just plug in the 'front speakers' 3.5mm jack, say into your laptop's headphone jack. Sound will come out of the front 2 speakers only, but pressing the matrix mode will emulate 5.1 out of all speakers. Seeing as the X530 doesn't have a matrix mode button, I don't see how you can do this. I think you can do it over RCA using this adapter since you can plug in all 3 cables, which you'd need to do without a matrix mode

Yeah I wouldn't have expect loud bass from Z506's 25W sub(especially compared to Z5500's 188W). I guess the Z series aren't always better than the X then. :P
IMO, you need to submit a review of how terrible the Z506 speakers are. Let the world know so they won't make the same mistake. Hell, I almost bought them myself. Can't believe they cost more than the X530/540 as well.
But i just went into JB hifi and i didnt see any probs with it. I loved the sound.

rack > The front/center speakers are by no means bad and neither is the subwoofer. They pack a punch, just not as much as the X-230/X-540. Seeing as I had the X-230's, I didn't want to 'upgrade' to a 5.1 setup that had worse speakers/sub. Would never have satisfied me. I don't know how they set the speakers up at JB Hi-Fi but if you heard the back speakers clearly by themselves, then you'd know what I'm talking about. They play ambient and quiet sounds fine. It's just when you get high pitch sounds that they sound bad. Also, you may not notice these difference if you haven't owned and got used to the X series speakers/sub. So to you they may be fine.
Maybe not all Z506's are like this? Either way, the sound and bass is definitely better on the X540 overall. So considering that the Z506 is more expensive you'd be better off getting the X540 if you can. I think the Z506 is replacing the X540 at most stores now so the X540 is a little harder to find. They're $99 at Dick Smith (I got em for $79 though) but they're sold out/no longer available at most stores.
Oh and another thing to note with the Z506. If you want to connect them to a 5.1 sound card using all 3 3.5mm jacks, you can't turn off the 3D sound (matrix) mode. From other reviews I've read, this means that even with a 5.1 channel source, it'll still be emulated 5.1 (not true 5.1). Can't confirm this but with the X540, you have control over it since you can turn off the matrix mode if you're using a 5.1 channel source so that you get true 5.1

Local officeworks declined Z-2300 price match by the manager citing warranty differences: he claimed Fluidtek was "Back to Base" warranty instead of "Manufacturer" warranty, and as such the products were not 'identical'.
thats a load of whateva , its all manufacturer warranty but you must return to base as Logitech doesn't take the item of you . he is just making an excuse . if i was you , i would make a formal complain to Logitech Australia regarding this as he is making false statements on a logitech products , not acceptable

Hi Lancel_Bracken, if you have time go back to the same officeworks. Ask them for the number they called and whom they spoke to. Because no matter how much i searched i couldn’t find their number. Take them to department of fair trading for doing false advertising of beating prices by 10%. And lying.

Well i am heading to dicksmith to pickup the x-530 only becuase it has a remote to operate with and wall mounts whereas the z506 doesnt have these. Would love to go for z5500 but to be honest i don't need these. i think i am going to be really happy with the x-530. Dicksmith promised to beat the price by 10%. woot woot

The X-530 doesn't have a remote. The X-540 does. The Z506 is crap though. X-530 would be better and if you can get it for like $40 then you can't complain.

Talking about price matching or beating i don't think any stores would. These prices can only be given by fluitek bacause they are authorised resellers and logitech doesn't have many. They don't have a phone number either. I've searched everywhere but no number.
Guess i'll just have to drive down there and get it.

I seriously don't understand! It's like $300RRP in the states. Considering the almost-parity exchange rates, it should be sold around that price. Some places there even have it listed for $250. Assume shipping is $100 (way overestimated), then that still makes it $400 at full RRP. What gives?

nah mate thats a good point, and 5% for say the x530 speakers is something liek $2.25 or something, so its not a big deal, its more so that fluidtek was a lot futher for me and i had to finish my uni assignment which i still havent done, but i didnt want to make the trek there, to miss out. considering i dont know how long the stock was going to last and i didnt know how to check it myself either, other then maybe BC updating us on OZBARGAINs,
also i have a coles 5% staff discount whcih OW actaully let you use ontop of pricematching.

i ended up buying 2 X of the X530 since at 45 bucks make good presents and i wanted to at least get something, but yeah was somewhat disapointed, still love Fluidtek but that why i try get price match from OW as its less petrol when i fail, and i didnt actually go to OW i just call them.

well the ow i called didnt try to lie about, the warrentee thingo, but thats because other people from here prolly already bugged them about fluidtek, or that guys there actaully shop at fluidtek themselves..lol
