didn't know you could overclock sewing machines?

    • +1

You can't because it says overlock

    • +1

      Overlockers came way before overclocking

      • lol need new glasses :)

hey, overlocking could be the next big e-peen thing in PC :)

        • Nope that's monitors with high ppi

    • Will be interesting to see a sewing machine being overclocked and speed boost :)

      • and liquid cooled, decked out with LED stripes :)

I read it as "The brothers of Sewing Machines and Overclocking".
I thought Dam!, thats a niche community! I thought my membership on overclocking websites was a small community.

But yes, this has been happening for many years, i was an admin on OCAU long ago and ever since ive read "overlocking" as "overclocking", my brain cannot see the C under any circumstance.

All these new machines have locked multis, easier to increase the speed of the Front Side Bobbin.

  • Any recommendations for a good brother sEwing machine?? Please I have no idea but need to gift some one.

Sewers say to take the person themselves to choose. Otherwise you'll probably get something they don't use, but can't get rid of either for fear of offending you.

Short of that, there are machines that mostly just sew, others focus on embroidery, and ones mainly for quilting. Obviously there's some crossover. e.g. A quilting machine can still do plain sewing. So if you don't want to ask or take them with you to choose it - then pick the group they're most likely to use it for, and just buy the most expensive one.

Btw… If they don't have an overlocker there's no other choice - THAT is what I would buy. It sews the strong, multi-threaded seams on the left & right sides of the inside of a shirt for example.

only one brother overlocker in spotlight

didn't even know what an overlocker was…

They're all VERY similar. Most overlockers nowdays are rebadged Janome or "Juki" machines too. Which means the feet are interchangeable. (There are optional feet that can sew a string of beads while overlocking, gather elastic while sewing it to the garment, etc. - But they may never get involved enough to use them.) I don't know if this one is the same as Janome. If the person ever wants to go that far (get extra feet), just a brother/janome retailer - they'll know. They will probably have their 'own brand' feet anyway.

More expensive overlockers may have a few extra features like a "cover stitch", where they can sew two parallel straight lines around the outer side of a T-shirt collar, while it overlocks the inner side of the collar to the inside of the main body of the shirt.

Another brand (Babylock) can thread the cotton for you, using a pump that blows air to suck the threads through into place ready to sew. But there's not a lot of other differences.

The main function is that strong inside seam seen in most clothing - and it's why I say buy the overlocker if they don't have one. Most of those other features on more expensive overlockers can be done with a sewing machine after overlocking anyway.

e.g. Most people wouldn't even be aware what a cover stitch is, let alone how to do it, or do it so it's neat. And if they do want it, they can just overlock the inside, then turn the shirt right-way out, and buy a twin-needle for a normal sewing machine. (Do it in two steps instead of one.)

How can you state "that last" if you have had it for a year…

      • I had a singer and it had a fault after 1 month. the guy at spotlight does regular sewing classes and he told me he always uses brother because nothing ever goes wrong with them. They use the brother machines in their classes

        • My sister bought one and the motor stopped after a month, she's had the replacement 2 or 3 years now though so I'll take your word for it.

I have an ELNA EL2000 bought last sale.. how does the $269 ($134.5 after discount) Brother machines compare?

  • I did not know what an overlocker does… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YzJ0FhiJ56c

  • Any suggestion for small hand held sewing machine ?

    • Needle & thread? ;-)

Seriously, for quick repairs, I just carry one of those kits you can get in hotels. I did have a hand held sewing machine, and it was pretty useless. They're not expensive, so if you want to give it a go it's not going to hurt too much if you also find it's easier to go manual. Spotlight only seem to have the one (https://www.spotlightstores.com/sewing-fabrics/haberdashery/…) it appears.

      • For mum actually - she's getting old and not that good with needles. Will give that a try. ta

        • If her dexterity and possibly eyesight is starting to be an issue, a hand held machine may not be so flash, but not a huge investment I guess. If she wants to sew, then a machine that has an auto threader and foot pedal may be better.

F**k Spotlight and their inability to sell discounted sewing machines.

I purchased a sewing machine online almost a month ago when it was part of a catalogue sale. A day later I get an email saying my order has been cancelled, giving no reason (proof). I contact customer support via email and phone over the next week and get the run around; apparently the "online department" have no direct phone or email for the public. 2 weeks later they send this and are now ignoring me…

    Thank you for your email.

Please note that We do state in our terms and conditions on the website for online orders: https://www.spotlightstores.com/terms-and-conditions

"3.) Disclaimer: Spotlight makes no warranty or guarantee regarding: the products displayed on the website being available at any time."

The trouble is the sewing machine that was available online the day I bought it has been available to buy online every day since the sale ended for full price.

    • +1

It's pretty dodgy. I tried to buy a discounted sewing machine in store as it was sold out online. The staff told me they ran out of the model that was being discounted. I came back the day after the sale ended and guess which model was back on shelf?

      • -1

It could have just been that there was a delivery the next day; I'm not saying that's what happened but I guess it seems a bit more plausible than the staff intentionally hiding the sewing machines? I don't know? Would Spotlight really bother to hide sewing machines that they're selling at a discounted rate? From the complaints that Missus J has about Spotlight staff, I'd be inclined to think that they probably couldn't care less?

        • +1

Maybe. I asked the staff when the machine will be back in stock and they said possibly a week. I came back the last day of the sale and they were still out. Then the day after that the machines were back, at full price. I can believe they sold out, but maybe they didn't want to put the restocked machines back on the floor until after the sale ended, or were under instructions not to. Either way, the timing was suspect.

    • Yep I had a terrible experience with this too….

bought and then 2 weeks later (including 4-5 follow ups) they finally cancel.

then 4-5 more followups to get a refund on the shipping cost…

  • So which one y'all buying?
