Any chance you can get a deal on the Xiaomi Fan next please TA?

It's my one piece of xiaomi that I'm missing.

So people are aware, the xiaomi app needs to be set to China for these to work (unless you fanghack them)

I originally had the app on China when I got the vacuum, then changed to Singapore when I got the yeelights so they would work with Google home.

Now I've got the xiaomi app on China with the vacuum and cam, and the yeelight app on Singapore so the automation works.

    • +1

the xiaomi app needs to be set to China for these to work

Any suggestion for a camera like this that just works out-of-the-box? (ie where you don't have to mess around with location/languages?)

      • +2

To clarify, these will work out of the box fine. And if it's only item you have in the xiaomi app, or don't want Google home to work with yeelights you'll also be OK.

    • damnit

so if i fanghack these, the rest of my xiaomi stuff is stuck on china server like my mihomekit and lights.

thank god for samsungs personal folder allowing me to install 2 copies of each app

    • +1

      These are great little cameras.

the xiaomi app needs to be set to China

Yes, and the app needs permission to just about everything on your phone in order to work.

Perhaps they are cheap to allow the Chinese government to spy on their citizens. They must be confused about all the cockatoos they keep seeing on mine.

      • You can go in and not allow most of the permissions in the android app settings and it causes no issues.

The latest MiHome app update (30 Sep 2017) now crashes the app when I try to open it. I'm still on iOS10 and the MiHome app update was for iOS11 so now updating to iOS11 to see if it resolves it.

    • +5

nope updating it to ios11 won't fix it.

just got told this morning by a friend that there's a workaround to this. I've tried it and app is now back working, so its a verified workaround:

      1. Go to settings and change your phone language to something different to your current one (most likely English Aus). I tried to change it to English (New Zealand) but the app still failed to open so I had to change it to Spanish.
      2. open the Mi Home App, which should then open up fine.
      3. Go back to settings and change the language back to English (or whatever language you usually have)
    • +8

changed language to spanish and it launches. changed back to english AU and I get the crash again :( racist bastards

Edit: Ok got it to work after heaps of stuffing around.

      1. Change language to spanish / french or something random
      2. Launch app
      3. Change home screen in app from My Devices to News
      4. Change language back to 'straya
      5. app should launch now…
      • I can't get the app to work either after changing language back to English. Works in Spanish though…

        • Same here.

        • @automated: see my edit above

        • @gigs:

How do I do step 3?

edit: changed to French instead of Spanish and I could understand more of the app, seems to be working now!

        • +3

@automated: MiHome app has 4 main options across the bottom of the screen. "My Devices", Mi Home Store, News, Profile. When in another language where the app is working, change it to one of the other options such as news. Go back to iOS settings and change back to English. The app should now work for you.. It did for me anyway after the extra steps.

        • +1

          @gigs:

This worked. Thanks so much gigs!

        • +1

          @gigs:
Hmm I tried after your edit, it opens fine in Spanish, and I select the news tab, however as soon as I change back to any English the app crashes when opening. Noticed its called MiHome DB in spanish and only MiHome in english.

        • @vrap:

I had the same problem as you. Didn’t work when I changed to Spanish but worked when I switched to French and then back. Perhaps give that a try?

        • @vrap: Same thing happened to me. I selected all the other tabs other than "my devices" and it still crashed.

        • @Poombear: Worked for me - thanks.

        • @Poombear:
          ça a marché

        • @gigs: i did this but the apps still fail to open when I swithed back to english :(

        • @mjjeje: It didn't work for me for spanish but french seemed to do the trick using @gigs workaround. voulez-vous coucher avec moi ce soir

        • @wmatch: oh french worked. This is so so weird ….

      • came here to post about the app not working, thanks for the fix, seems to be working for me now :)

      • Not sure why this camera is so popular when its difficult to setup. I had bought it few months ago in another ozbargain deal, but could never got it working. Thanks for above tips, will give this a try.

        • Thanks for the suggestions. It worked after setting the server to China.

    • I tried so many method (I even download the oldest apk, but doesn't work…)

The funny thing that helped me is set location as China. Lol (even you are in Australia)

That works for all my device, even my yeelights.

After fanghack, first thing is uninstall that shitty app.

    • new app update today (4/10/17) fixes the crashing.

Australian plug? If not, are people using a converter or a different power supply?

    • grab a Mi Powerboard

      • Anything smaller?

        • +1

anyway, it is charging via USB cable, any of your mobile phone chargers will do the work.

      • But they aren't rated for Australian use :p

        • :) im sure you can spend more and find something with the C-Tick… what can go wrong, your house burns down.. thats what insurance is for! ;-)

just use a AUS certified USB adapter fi you are concerned and you will be fine..

        • Yup… and app is not completely in English.

    • +1

lol was thinking wth is all this commotion about the plug coz mine only came with the camera + usb cable…
Went to check the box just now and found a usb plug adapter thing hidden at the back >///<

    • Just use a USB plug off an old phone or similar. You dont need the one in the box really.

  • Nabbed one. Thanks :D

  • +1

    thanks TA, just ordered one.

      • +2

I certainly will, I am writing a script to update tracking here with a frequency of 600 times per minute :)

  • Please send the AU power socket.

Can these be plugged into a PC for webcamming?

    • +1

      No.

      • Thanks. Bummer. Would be good if they could.

        • +1

Might be a hack of some sort, but in the FAQ it says no.

    • Not sure about this one in particular but there are third parties apps/drivers that can capture a remote stream and use it for webcam use. Have a look at http://www.ipcamdriver.com/ and also another method at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RKA4UYMVW10

  • how are people setting these up in places with no power point - are people just using power banks ?

    • Or solar, but this is meant to be used indoors

    • +1

the previous owner of my place had the foresight to install a bunch of noncompliant power sockets outside + $4 extension cable from bunnings and cable management/conduits

      • "previous owner" for liability purposes? :p

        • lol no really

he also did a bunch of other non compliant stuff cause he was a builder. cant decide whether to be happy or annoyed. not worth spending the money to redo since it all functions. but annoys me that it wasnt done properly

        • @furythree:
Yeah I've got a dodgy one too. Bathroom must not have had a exhaust fan. So they put one in but ran the power for it down the outside of the wall, inside a conduit and terminated it in another switch box that sticks out from the wall.. There is another light switch right next to it, where the power was run inside the wall cavity. When I bought the house, first thing I did was rip it off the wall, ran it inside the cavity and hooked it up to a double gang switch. Much neater!

I've got no idea what they were thinking.

  • ordered my first camaera.

  • +1

These are great but pia to setup, do people sit next to their router to have it connected? It seems that after scanning the barcode it doesn't like to link up with camera + internet

    • +3

This was my issue with any server except China. Changed and it works fine. Always failed at 89% otherwise.

      • I have mine changed to China (I think lol) I'll reset it again and see how that goes, cheers

      • +2

        89%? That's a very… specific.

      • where do you change the server to China?

    • +1

I didnt have an issues from another room. IIRC SSID with a space in it will cause issues.

Edit, and yeah you have to select mainland china. On my phone that was written in chinese but it should be the top of the list.

  • +3

I'm still waiting for the one I ordered back in August..
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/321925

Do these really take this long to arrive, or should I maybe start to be getting concerned?

    • +4

Same here, bought this one, coz I forgot I bought one already in Aug….

    • AUGUST?… alright i'll forget this deal/gearbest

    • +1

good luck waiting, it's time to lodge the dispute through PayPal

    • I ordered mine on 07/09 and got them in a week….random? I'm in syd

    • i've received all of mine within reasonable time (funnily enough the newer exxier one with the express shipping has taken longer as i haven't received that yet…)

  • +2

Judging from the comments seems like I need a boot in the ass to continue coding on this project more often than currently.

    • Nop, I already forget how did I hack it first time. Means it is too easy and simple that I didn't even remember.

    • Not a boot, only always interested. You should do it cos you enjoy it, no other reason.

      • Oh I do enjoy it, definitely, just a cause for abit of attention when so many people aren't happy with their current interface setup :)

    • yeah still waiting lol

how are you going to advertise it when its finally ready?

      • For the beta, by replying to the near 50 private messages I have, heh. It's only been 2 weeks since I started! Proper protocol encryption/hardening gets pretty complicated.

        • Hey, what project are you working on?

        • any progress?

i love fanghacks but the crappy interface, lack of features like manual IR on/off, dual cloud + RTSP capability suck

  • +3

Fanghack is the way to go baby! Fk all the cloud thing

    • +6

      yes!

The main website for fanghacks is: https://github.com/samtap/fang-hacks

Doesn't really give very good instructions so follow this guide for the step by step:
      http://bobbyromeo.com/technology/xiaomi-smart-1080p-wifi-ip-…
(you don't need to sideload the Mi Home, install it direct from Play but set your country as China)

      • My cam that arrived last week wouldn't work with fanghack out of the box, had to go to an older firmware revision.
Edit: actually, thinking about it i did a firmware update when i got the cam before i tried fang hack. Maybe people shouldnt do that latest update.

        • Yep. Hack only works with firmware up to 3.0.3.56
If you upgrade the firmware you will need to downgrade it for the hack to work.

        • its just what came with cheapo product. need tweaking and fiddling. then it is golden !!!

      • I tried loading the fanghack…I get the double "bing" noise when it loads up but I can never navigate to the Opera address..is there a trick to it?

        • See my comment above, check your firmware version.

        • @Duff5000: Yep I am on that firmware.

      • is there a need to use the older mihome app? its causing me not to be able to use the cloud functions

you cant use the mihome app when in fanghack mode anyway unless RTSP is off

  • -2

Can this camera send still images thru email?
Or we could only access monitoring/alert thru xiaomi cloud?

never mind. not interested to wait till Easter 2018 to receive

  • +1

Give up in these cameras, I know it's cheap, I know sometimes it works, but finally it always crashes or something goes wrong. Not to mention the fake 1080p quality, for a toy that's fine, but if you really wanna Sth that works all the time, suggest you buy a decent cam.

    • +2

suggest you buy a decent cam

Suggestion for a good value unit?

  • What are people using this for?
